Start with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 if you want polished, fast-moving action that works for almost any group. Choose Werewolves Within for the strongest critic reception and a horror-comedy change of pace, Pokémon Detective Pikachu for family-friendly live action, Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story for racing and an underdog story, or Mortal Kombat (2021) when fighting-game energy matters most. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the first Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are easy-access alternatives.
Quick picks after Street Fighter
The 1994 Street Fighter is a useful starting point because it combines recognizable game characters, exaggerated action and deliberate camp, but its reception leaves plenty of room for an upgrade. Rotten Tomatoes lists it at 20% from critics and 20% from audiences. Its consensus says that “mild entertainment through campy one-liners and the overacting of the late Raul Julia” cannot compensate for a predictable, uneven story.

How to choose your next movie
Use four questions rather than treating “video game movie” as a single genre.
#1 Best Overall
- Do you want a direct adaptation? Sonic, Pokémon, Mortal Kombat and Mario use established characters, settings or mythology. Gran Turismo turns a racing game into a fact-based sports drama, while Werewolves Within borrows a social-deduction premise for an original story.
- How close should the tone stay to Street Fighter? Mortal Kombat is the nearest tonal and mechanical match because combat is the main attraction. Sonic keeps the bright action but is aimed at a wider family audience. Werewolves Within keeps the comic exaggeration while moving into murder mystery and horror.
- Who is watching? Sonic, Pokémon Detective Pikachu and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are the safest group choices for viewers who do not know the games. Mortal Kombat is more dependent on familiarity with the source material and its violent style.
- What kind of momentum do you want? Pick Gran Turismo for qualifying laps and an underdog climb, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for a rapid superhero-style adventure, or Werewolves Within for suspicion, reveals and ensemble banter.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024): the best all-purpose follow-up
Why it leads the list
This is the safest recommendation when the group wants recognizable game imagery, substantial action and a film that does not require prior knowledge. The story expands the series with a quick pace and a double helping of Jim Carrey’s comic performance. The result is more confident than a simple effects showcase: it has enough character conflict for adults, enough visual motion for younger viewers and enough franchise detail for longtime Sonic players.
Rotten Tomatoes records an 86% Tomatometer and a 94% Popcornmeter. TheWrap’s cited snapshot is close at 85% from critics and 95% from audiences. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls it “the best entry in this amiable series yet,” praising the combination of Carrey’s antics and speed suited to Sonic’s character.
Game connection and accessibility
The film is a direct adaptation of the Sonic universe rather than a movie that merely borrows game mechanics. Its central appeal is the translation of a fast platforming hero into a live-action/CG adventure with human co-stars and large set pieces. You can watch it without playing the games, although familiarity makes the character introductions and references more rewarding.

Choose it when
- You need one movie that can satisfy children, casual viewers and game fans at the same time.
- You want action without the harsher violence associated with Mortal Kombat.
- You prefer a polished sequel rather than a first-film origin story.
Werewolves Within (2021): the critic-approved genre pivot
What makes it different
Werewolves Within keeps the social pressure of a multiplayer game—everybody has a role, somebody is lying and the group must identify a hidden threat—but turns that setup into a self-contained horror comedy. Snowbound isolation, escalating suspicion and deliberately awkward personalities create the tension. The jokes do not cancel the danger; they make each accusation more uncomfortable.
Its Rotten Tomatoes scores are 86% from critics and 60% from audiences. TheWrap’s snapshot reports 86% and 80%, respectively. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as “the rare horror comedy that offers equal helpings of either genre—and adds up to a whole lot of fun in the bargain.”
Rank #2
- The Heroes Return – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles team up once again to face their most powerful rival yet: Shadow the Hedgehog.
- Star-Studded Cast – Features performances by Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey, Krysten Ritter, and Keanu Reeves.
- High-Definition Format – Includes Blu-ray and a digital copy for the ultimate home viewing experience.
- Exclusive Bonus Content – Enjoy deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and a special feature with Dr. Robotnik.
- Perfect for Fans and Collectors – A must-have addition to any Sonic collection, packed with action, humor, and heart.
How it connects to games
This is a looser adaptation than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. The game connection is the hidden-role, social-deduction structure rather than a parade of familiar fighters. That makes it a strong choice if you like the feeling of a match—reading opponents, testing alliances and waiting for a reveal—but want an original cast and a smaller-scale story.
Choose it when
- You want the most sharply reviewed option in the group without watching another martial-arts spectacle.
- Your audience enjoys horror but prefers comic tension to sustained brutality.
- You are looking for a film that works even if nobody has played the game.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019): the family live-action choice
Why it works after Street Fighter
This film supplies the game-world recognition that made Street Fighter appealing, but replaces tournament combat with a detective mystery. Its central hook is a talking Pikachu who helps investigate a disappearance in a city where humans and Pokémon share the screen. The live-action setting gives the creatures physical presence while retaining the colorful variety that fans expect.

The critics consensus says the movie “may not take its wonderfully bizarre premise as far as it could,” but concludes that the offbeat adaptation should catch most, if not all, franchise fans.
Accessibility and limitations
You do not need a detailed Pokémon history to follow the mystery. Familiar players will recognize more creatures and references, while newcomers can treat the film as a buddy detective adventure. The trade-off is that the premise promises a stranger, more ambitious world than the story always explores. Choose it for warmth, creature design and a broad age range rather than for hard-edged action.
Choose it when
- Children and adults are watching together.
- You want live action with game characters but little interest in tournament violence.
- You prefer a mystery structure over a sequence of fights.
Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story (2023): racing with an underdog engine
The appeal
Gran Turismo treats a racing game as a training ground rather than a fantasy universe. The protagonist’s path from simulator competition toward real-world racing supplies a clear underdog arc, while the driving sequences provide the speed and visual payoff a player expects. It is the most grounded recommendation here: the drama comes from preparation, risk and proving that virtual skill can transfer to a physical track.
Rank #3
- action adventure, comedy, family, fantasy, science fiction
Rotten Tomatoes gives it 65% from critics and 91% from audiences. The critics consensus calls the action brisk and the underdog drama feel-good, while noting that the loose telling of the fact-based story weakens the result. That qualification matters: the movie is inspired by real events, but it should not be treated as a precise documentary account.

The connection to the game is direct in concept—the driving simulator is central to the character’s opportunity—but the film does not require you to know specific cars, tracks or game versions. Racing fans will have more technical detail to enjoy; everyone else can follow the straightforward competition narrative.
Choose it when
- You want adrenaline without fantasy creatures or supernatural combat.
- Your group likes sports movies built around training and an outsider’s rise.
- You are comfortable with a dramatized version of a true story.
Mortal Kombat (2021): the closest fighting-game match
What it preserves
If your reason for watching Street Fighter was the promise of fighters, rivalries and a game-like mythology, start here. The 2021 Mortal Kombat places violent confrontations, character abilities and tournament-style stakes at the center. It is the choice that most directly answers the question, “What is another fighting-game movie?”
Rotten Tomatoes records 55% from critics and 71% from audiences. Its consensus says the film is “largely for fans of the source material” and revives the franchise in appropriately violent fashion, while acknowledging that it is far from fatally flawed. The split between critic and audience figures reflects its priority: faithful combat energy over an elegant standalone screenplay.
Who should watch it
Knowledge of the game is helpful because the film introduces a roster, powers and mythology at a brisk pace. Newcomers can follow the basic conflict, but may not feel the same payoff from every character arrival. The violence is substantially harsher than the campy, broadly accessible action of Street Fighter, so check your group’s comfort level before choosing it.
Rank #4
- action adventure, comedy, family, fantasy, science fiction
Choose it when
- Fighting-game mechanics matter more than universal accessibility.
- You want supernatural abilities and hard-impact combat rather than racing or mystery.
- You are watching with people who already know the franchise or enjoy lore-heavy action.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022): the straightforward sequel choice
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an easy continuation if you want more of the first film’s family adventure. It broadens the cast and raises the scale while retaining the bright, comic tone. Rotten Tomatoes lists 69% from critics and 91% from audiences. Its consensus says that, although it is not as much fun as Sonic’s greatest games, it is a generally acceptable sequel for viewers who enjoyed the first film.
Because the movie builds on the 2020 entry, it is better watched after that film than as a completely isolated recommendation. It suits viewers who prefer continuity and familiar characters to a new genre experiment. Pick it for a second helping of accessible Sonic action; pick Sonic the Hedgehog 3 instead if you want the most highly rated and fastest-moving entry in this list.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020): the clean starting point
The first Sonic the Hedgehog is the most useful option when nobody has seen the series and you want to establish the character before moving to the sequels. It introduces the blue speedster through a road-adventure structure, pairing game-inspired spectacle with a human companion. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 64% from critics and 89% from audiences, with a consensus that calls it “a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy.”
Its appeal is simplicity: the premise, stakes and character relationships are explained from the beginning. Compared with Street Fighter, it is less interested in a large ensemble of combatants and more interested in making one mascot approachable. Watch it first if your group values an origin story; skip directly to the third film only if you do not mind entering an established series late.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023): colorful animation and game nostalgia
The Super Mario Bros. Movie translates platform-game imagery into a compact animated adventure. Its worlds, obstacles and character designs are immediately legible to players, while animation keeps the action bright and kinetic. Rotten Tomatoes lists 58% from critics and 93% from audiences. The critics consensus calls it a “colorful—albeit thinly plotted—animated adventure.”
Best Value

- Features 30+ iconic and humorous phrases and sounds from the movies
- Light-up eyes and quills by pressing Sonic’s chest
- Press Sonic’s hands and sneakers to activate phrases and sounds!
- Suggested for kids ages 3 years and up
That description captures the decision. The film is excellent for a quick, visually dense family watch and for viewers who enjoy recognizing game elements on screen. It is less suitable if you want the character development, mystery or underdog structure found in the other recommendations. As with Sonic, familiarity with the games is optional, but fans will notice more details.
Best viewing paths
For a mixed group
- Watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the broadest balance of action, humor and franchise spectacle.
- Follow with Pokémon Detective Pikachu if the group wants another live-action game world with a gentler tone.
- Use The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the shortest, most colorful animated option.
For fighting-game fans
- Choose Mortal Kombat (2021) for the closest match to combat-focused game adaptation.
- Return to Street Fighter afterward as a camp comparison: its one-liners and Raul Julia’s performance remain part of its appeal despite the weak overall reception.
- Switch to Werewolves Within if you want game-derived tension without another roster of martial artists.
For a two-film night with different genres
Pair Gran Turismo with Werewolves Within. The first supplies open-track momentum and an earnest rise; the second confines its characters to a suspicious, comic pressure cooker. Neither requires expertise with its source game, and the contrast prevents the evening from becoming two versions of the same action formula.
What the ratings can—and cannot—tell you
The Tomatometer is the percentage of counted critics who rated a film positively; the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. They describe reception, not a universal quality score. A high audience figure alongside a lower critic figure, as seen on several entries here, usually signals an accessible fan experience that professional reviews found thinner or less consistent. A high critic figure with a lower audience response, as on Werewolves Within, can indicate a more distinctive genre blend that does not appeal equally to everyone.

Final recommendation
For one answer, watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It offers the strongest combination of current critical and audience reception, recognizable game identity, rapid action and low entry requirements. If “after Street Fighter” specifically means “another fighting-game adaptation,” choose Mortal Kombat (2021) instead. For a better-reviewed film that deliberately changes the formula, choose Werewolves Within; for children or a family audience, choose Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
