There is no single best camera for travel: the right choice depends on what you want to photograph, how much gear you will carry and what you can spend. A fixed-lens compact keeps a kit simple and unobtrusive; a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses gives you more framing options, but its body is only part of the size and weight you will pack. For “What’s the best camera for travel?” start with your trip and subjects, then compare complete camera kits—not just camera bodies.
How to choose a travel camera
A camera that stays in your bag will not improve your holiday photos. Balance image quality against convenience, and assess the lens or lenses you would actually bring. A compact camera may be easier to carry every day; a mirrorless kit may be more adaptable for landscapes, portraits and distant subjects, but can add bulk, cost and decisions about which lens to pack.

- Size and weight: Judge the full kit, including lenses, rather than the body alone.
- Lens range: A fixed lens simplifies the choice but limits your focal-length options. Interchangeable lenses let you change framing, at the cost of carrying and managing more gear.
- Image quality and low light: Sensor size is one factor, not a complete ranking. DPReview notes that Four Thirds and APS-C systems can use lighter, more compact lenses than full-frame counterparts, while full frame offers the potential for better image quality. Your lens, shooting conditions and tolerance for carrying weight matter too.
- Autofocus and stabilization: Consider how reliably the camera can focus on the subjects you expect to photograph and whether stabilization will help with handheld shots or video.
- Battery life, durability and weather sealing: These matter more on long days outdoors or trips where you cannot easily protect or recharge your equipment.
- Video and connectivity: If you plan to vlog or share photos while travelling, look at how easily the camera frames video and connects to your other devices.
- Controls and price: A camera you can operate comfortably is more useful than one whose features you rarely use. Check current price and local availability; both can vary by region and date.
Choose by the kind of trip and photographs you make
For a camera you will carry everywhere
Look at compact fixed-lens models if you want a smaller, simpler setup for street scenes, city walks or everyday holiday photos. The trade-off is that you cannot swap lenses to widen your options. DPReview recommends the Ricoh GR IV as a pocketable choice and the Fujifilm X100VI as a classic fixed-lens option. Digital Camera World named the X100VI its overall travel-camera choice, citing its 40MP images and 6.2K video, while noting that its fixed lens can limit some users. Those are the publishers’ recommendations, not a universal fit.

For varied subjects and more framing options
A mirrorless camera is worth considering if your itinerary mixes landscapes, architecture, portraits and other subjects that benefit from different fields of view. Compare the body with the lens you would realistically take. DPReview recommends the Fujifilm X-T50 with a 16–50mm lens as a travel kit, the Sony a6700 for compact all-round capability, and the Sony a7CR for portable full-frame use. Its full-frame choice still needs to be weighed against lens size and the total kit you will carry.

For distant wildlife or landscapes
Reach matters when you cannot move closer to a subject. A zoom can frame distant details without changing your position; check its range alongside the camera’s size and weight. DPReview recommends the Sony RX10 V for long reach, while National Geographic names the OM-1 Mark II for wildlife photography. These recommendations serve different approaches: consider whether you want a long-zoom camera or a system whose lenses can be changed.
For vlogging and travel video
Prioritize a setup that is comfortable to hold and quick to frame, alongside the video features you need. DPReview recommends the DJI Osmo Pocket for travel video, while National Geographic names the Canon PowerShot V1 for vlogging. Digital Camera World highlights the X100VI’s 6.2K video, but its fixed lens remains a constraint if you need different framing options.

For rough outdoor conditions
When a trip involves exposed trails or changeable weather, give durability, weather sealing and weight more importance than a headline resolution figure. Check the specific camera and lens combination: a body’s sealing does not by itself establish how well the whole kit is protected.

Make the final choice with your actual kit in mind
- List your main subjects. Decide whether you mostly want everyday scenes, portraits, landscapes, distant wildlife or video.
- Choose the simplest setup that covers them. A fixed-lens compact reduces kit and setup; a mirrorless body makes more sense if you will use the lens flexibility.
- Check the complete carry. Include the camera, the lens or lenses you expect to bring, and any extra bulk the setup requires. Do not assume a small body guarantees a light kit.
- Match features to conditions. Prioritize reach for faraway subjects, easy framing and comfortable handling for vlogging, or weather sealing and manageable weight for outdoor trips.
- Compare current local options. Prices and availability change, and a recommendation from a U.S.-availability-based guide may not reflect your market.
National Geographic also reports a named testing process for its own 2026 compact-camera guide; that figure should not be applied to the other publishers’ recommendations. None of the guide selections above represents hands-on testing conducted for this article.
