Short answer: For a kitchen infestation, use a purpose-built liquid-lure trap beside the activity and remove the moist organic material where flies are breeding. TERRO Fruit Fly Trap T2502B is the best-documented long-duration choice in the available product information, while Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap is the main alternative for shoppers who prefer an essential-oil, plant-based formulation. Neither product has been proven by an independent head-to-head study to catch more flies than the other.
Which store-bought fruit fly trap should you buy?
Your choice depends on the feature you value, not on a verified universal ranking. TERRO documents a food-based liquid lure, two traps per package and a longer stated service interval. Raid documents essential oils and plant-based ingredients, with a shorter replacement interval and explicit storage warnings. A commercial vinegar trap is another option if you specifically want a pesticide-free approach.

TERRO product page | The manufacturer’s information does not prove that it catches more flies than competing products. |
| Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap | Essential-oil, plant-based formulation | Essential oils and plant-based ingredients; intended for fruit flies; place near the source; replace after 21 days; label includes eye-injury and child/pet storage precautions. Raid product page | Its stated replacement interval is shorter. Raid says the trap is not tested on gnats or drain flies. |
| Commercial vinegar-style trap | Pesticide-free vinegar approach | Maine’s agriculture department identifies Bio-Logic Natural Catch Plus Fruit Fly Trap as a commercial, non-toxic, pesticide-free vinegar trap. Maine DACF guidance | The cited guidance gives no current retail price and no independent comparison with TERRO or Raid. Trade-name mention is not an endorsement. |
If you want the clearest documented fit for a trap that can remain in place longer, start with TERRO. Choose Raid when its ingredient approach and label information are more important to you. Choose the vinegar-style option when avoiding pesticide-based products is your priority and you can verify current availability.
What a fruit-fly trap can—and cannot—do
A trap is an adult-fly reduction tool. It attracts adult flies to a liquid lure and holds them in the device, but it does not remove the material where eggs or larvae may already be developing. University extension guidance describes homemade and commercial traps as effective for reducing adult numbers, while also advising that drains be cleaned and sterilized and that breeding material be removed. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction explains why flies can appear to “come back” after a trap catches several. If fermenting produce, damp garbage residue, a dirty sink overflow or another moist organic deposit remains, new adults can continue emerging. Use the trap and source removal as one response, not as competing solutions.
Fruit flies may arrive with produce. Cornell’s integrated pest-management guidance notes that they can enter on store-bought or homegrown fruits and vegetables. Cornell IPM A trap therefore helps with adults already flying in your kitchen, while inspecting incoming produce reduces the chance of introducing more.
TERRO Fruit Fly Trap T2502B: best documented long-duration option
TERRO’s T2502B uses a food-based liquid lure in an apple-shaped housing. The package includes two traps and a 1 fl oz bottle of lure, and TERRO states a service period of up to 45 days for each trap. The manufacturer lists fruit bowls, garbage areas, sinks, dishwashers, counters and stored produce as placement locations. See TERRO’s placement and product instructions
Why it fits a persistent kitchen problem
- The two-trap package lets you cover two activity points at once, such as a fruit bowl and a sink area.
- The liquid lure is food-based, matching the food-related environment in which kitchen fruit flies are usually noticed.
- The stated service period reduces how often you need to replace the device compared with products whose labels call for shorter intervals.
- The apple form factor is easy to identify as a trap rather than a food container, which helps prevent accidental handling of the lure.
What the documentation does not establish
TERRO’s product page describes the lure, package and placement, but it is not an independent catch-rate test. You should not read the longer service interval as proof that T2502B catches more flies than Raid or a vinegar trap. Placement and sanitation can affect the result as much as the product choice.

Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap: plant-based formulation alternative
Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap is described as using essential oils and plant-based ingredients. Its instructions direct you to place the trap near the source and replace it after 21 days. The label also carries eye-injury and child/pet storage precautions. Read the Raid product and label information
When Raid is the better fit
- You prefer a trap marketed around essential oils and plant-based ingredients.
- You are willing to follow a shorter replacement schedule and check the installation more frequently.
- You can place it close to the suspected source while keeping it away from children and pets as directed on the label.
Important identification limitation
Raid states that this trap is intended for fruit flies and has not been tested on gnats or drain flies. If the insects are not fruit flies, changing brands will not solve the identification problem. Confirm the pest before relying on a fruit-fly-specific lure.
Commercial vinegar-style traps
Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry identifies Bio-Logic Natural Catch Plus Fruit Fly Trap as a commercial, non-toxic, pesticide-free vinegar trap. The agency’s document is educational guidance; its trade-name reference is not an endorsement. Read the Maine DACF document

How to use a store-bought trap correctly
- Confirm the target insect. Fruit-fly traps are not interchangeable with traps for every small flying insect. Raid specifically says its product is not tested on gnats or drain flies. If you cannot identify the insect confidently, avoid assuming that a fruit-fly lure is appropriate.
- Find the activity before opening the trap. Watch where adults cluster or repeatedly land. Check fruit bowls, produce storage, garbage and recycling areas, counters, sinks, dishwashers and sink overflows. These are the locations TERRO identifies for placement, and Raid likewise directs placement near the source.
- Place the trap beside the activity. Set it on a stable surface close to the suspected breeding material, rather than across the room. Keep the housing upright and undisturbed so the lure remains where the product design expects it to be.
- Follow the package’s handling instructions. Keep the device in the position specified by its label. Do not transfer lure to an unmarked container, and do not improvise with placement that could expose children or pets.
- Remove the breeding material immediately. Discard overripe produce, empty wet garbage and recycling, and clean food residue from containers. Inspect damp organic deposits rather than relying on the trap to compensate for them.
- Clean and sterilize drains when they are implicated. Extension guidance specifically recommends cleaning and sterilizing drains as part of source control. A trap placed on the counter cannot clean a drain or remove buildup below the drain opening.
- Inspect new produce. Because fruit flies can arrive on store-bought or homegrown produce, check incoming fruits and vegetables and store them in a way that limits access when practical.
- Replace or dispose of the trap according to its label. The documented intervals differ by product, so use the interval for the exact model you purchased rather than applying one brand’s schedule to another.
Where to place traps in common kitchen layouts
Fruit bowl or produce counter
Place the trap beside—not inside—the fruit bowl or produce storage area. Remove visibly damaged or overripe items first. Keeping the lure next to the activity gives the trap a chance to intercept adults while you eliminate the food source.
Trash and recycling zone
Check the bottom and sides of bins for sticky residue, leaking bags and damp packaging. Empty the container, wash residue away and position the trap near the cleaned area. Do not let the trap become hidden behind a bin where you cannot monitor it.
Sink, dishwasher and overflow area
Look for organic film, standing moisture and food particles around the sink, overflow opening and dishwasher edges. Clean the area and follow the extension recommendation to clean and sterilize drains when they are part of the problem. Place the trap nearby on a dry, stable surface.

If adults are present in two separated areas, one trap may not be positioned close to both sources. The TERRO package’s two-trap configuration can cover two points simultaneously. With any product, prioritize proximity to observed activity over symmetry or decoration.
Why flies keep appearing after you set a trap
The breeding source is still present
This is the most important failure mode. Adult reduction does not remove eggs or larvae in produce, garbage residue, drains or other moist organic material. Recheck every source listed in the placement section and clean the area rather than moving the trap repeatedly.

The trap is too far from the activity
A trap in a bright, convenient location may be ineffective if the flies are concentrated by a sink, bin or produce container elsewhere. Move it beside the observed activity while keeping it upright and accessible for inspection.
The insect is not a fruit fly
Fruit-fly-specific lures are not a universal answer for gnats or drain flies. Raid’s label explicitly limits its testing to fruit flies, so a lack of results should prompt identification and source checking rather than automatic brand switching.

New flies are arriving with produce
Inspect fruits and vegetables as they enter the kitchen. Cornell notes that fruit flies can enter on both store-bought and homegrown produce, so an apparently clean counter does not rule out a continuing introduction.
The trap has reached its labeled replacement point
Use the replacement interval printed for your exact product. Do not extend use indefinitely because the housing still looks intact; the lure’s stated service period is part of the product specification.

Safety, storage and disposal
- Read the complete label before opening or placing the trap.
- Follow the Raid label’s eye-injury and child/pet storage precautions when using that product.
- Keep any lure and used trap out of reach of children and pets, and place it where it cannot be knocked over.
- Do not place a trap where it can contaminate food preparation surfaces or be mistaken for edible food.
- Dispose of the used device and remaining lure according to the package directions and local waste rules.
The exact safety language and disposal method can vary by product and region. The package supplied with your trap is the controlling instruction.
How the options compare for common buying decisions
| If your priority is… | Most suitable documented option | Why | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fewer scheduled replacements | TERRO T2502B | It has the longest stated service interval among the named products. | Confirm the T2502B model and package contents. |
| Essential-oil, plant-based ingredients | Raid Essentials | Raid identifies essential oils and plant-based ingredients. | Read the label’s storage warnings and replacement instruction. |
| Pesticide-free vinegar approach | Commercial vinegar-style trap | Maine DACF identifies a commercial, non-toxic, pesticide-free vinegar trap in this category. | Verify local availability and current package directions; the cited source does not state a current price. |

What “best” means in a real kitchen infestation
The best trap is the one you can place close to the activity, keep safely in position and use while removing the breeding material. A longer service interval can reduce replacement work; an ingredient preference can determine which product you are comfortable placing in the kitchen; and a vinegar formulation can matter if avoiding pesticides is your explicit goal. None of those features substitutes for sanitation.
For a documented starting point, use TERRO T2502B beside the strongest activity zone and address produce, waste, sinks, dishwashers and damp residue at the same time. Select Raid instead when its essential-oil, plant-based formulation better matches your preference, following its shorter replacement instruction and storage precautions. Consider a commercial vinegar trap when the pesticide-free formulation is the deciding requirement, while recognizing that the available guidance does not establish a comparative catch-rate winner.
