Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the closest match if what you love is tactical freedom: large mission spaces, adaptable equipment and the ability to improvise when a plan goes wrong. If you prefer disguises and elaborate setups, choose Hitman: World of Assassination. For disciplined covert-operations missions, Splinter Cell is the better fit; Dishonored 2 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are stronger choices for powers, augmentations and multiple solutions.

This guide matches each recommendation to the part of Metal Gear Solid you value most, including open-ended infiltration, social stealth, reconnaissance, story, setting and tolerance for being detected. No single game reproduces every Metal Gear trait, so the right follow-up depends on which element you want to preserve.

What games are like Metal Gear Solid?

Metal Gear Solid combines several kinds of stealth that are often separated in other series. You may hide physically, distract guards with equipment, scout a location, exploit enemy routines, improvise after an alarm, and use the environment to create a new route. Its tone also matters: espionage plotting, military technology and memorable set pieces sit alongside deliberate infiltration.

The recommendations below are therefore organized by the experience they reproduce best rather than by a single quality ranking. The key differences are:

  • Detection: some games make a mistake recoverable, while others expect a clean, carefully controlled operation.
  • Context: military espionage, historical action, science fiction and supernatural worlds produce very different stealth problems.

1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain — the closest mechanical match

If you want the nearest continuation of Metal Gear Solid’s play philosophy, start here. The Phantom Pain gives you open mission spaces and a flexible set of tools, so infiltration is not a puzzle with one intended answer. You can observe a location, choose an entry route, adapt your equipment and change plans when guards react differently than expected.

Why it feels familiar

The important similarity is not simply that both games feature stealth. It is the relationship between information and action. Scouting reveals the situation, but the game does not require you to follow a fixed sequence. You can turn a quiet approach into a different operation when a patrol moves, an objective changes or an alarm makes the original route unsafe.

That adaptability makes it the strongest answer to “What should I play after Metal Gear Solid V?” if you are looking for the same tactical freedom rather than a different setting. The game supports improvisational infiltration instead of treating detection as an automatic restart of your plan.

Who should choose it

  • Players who enjoy open mission spaces more than tightly scripted corridors.
  • Players who want equipment choice to change how an operation unfolds.
  • Players who regard a failed stealth plan as an invitation to improvise rather than a reason to reload immediately.

The trade-off

The very freedom that makes The Phantom Pain a close match can make it feel less tightly authored than a classic, directed espionage mission. If your favorite Metal Gear moments are controlled operations with carefully paced reveals, Splinter Cell or the Snake Eater remake may suit you better.

2. Hitman: World of Assassination — the best social-stealth alternative

Choose Hitman: World of Assassination when the part of Metal Gear Solid you want to expand is planning. Its missions are built around observation, disguise and replay. Instead of merely avoiding guards, you learn how a location functions, identify opportunities and decide how to reach a target while appearing to belong there.

Why it feels different from conventional stealth

Physical concealment remains useful, but social stealth is the defining idea. A disguise can change which areas you may enter and how people react to you. The challenge is not only “Can I remain unseen?” but also “Can I behave plausibly in this role long enough to reach the objective?” That creates a different kind of tension from hiding behind cover or moving through darkness.

Why replayability matters

A first run teaches you the structure of a location. Later runs let you test another disguise, route or setup. The same mission can therefore function as a planning exercise, an observation problem and an improvisation challenge. This is the strongest choice for readers who enjoy returning to a level to refine a plan rather than simply completing it once.

Choose Hitman if you want

  • Disguises and social access instead of purely physical concealment.
  • Replayable missions where knowledge improves future attempts.
  • Planning that rewards patience and attention to routines.

It is less focused on military fieldcraft than Metal Gear Solid, so choose another recommendation if camouflage, reconnaissance and equipment-based infiltration are your priorities.

  • GAME:TRUST INSTINCT BATTLE: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, short circuit battle, stalking, interviewing, climbing, hunting and injury treatment
  • SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators

3. Splinter Cell — the focused espionage substitute

Splinter Cell is the clearest choice for readers who want disciplined covert operations. Its appeal lies in controlled movement, careful concealment and missions that present stealth as a professional procedure rather than a broad playground.

How its stealth differs

Where The Phantom Pain encourages you to use a wide toolset in open spaces, Splinter Cell emphasizes the fundamentals of staying unseen and managing exposure. You plan your movement through a directed mission, pay attention to the environment and treat an alarm as a serious complication. The resulting rhythm is deliberate: gather information, cross the danger area, neutralize or bypass the obstacle, then continue.

Best fit for Metal Gear fans

Pick Splinter Cell if you value the covert-operations identity of Metal Gear Solid more than its broader systems. It is particularly suitable for players who prefer a mission to establish a clear route and tone, with less emphasis on turning every encounter into an improvised sandbox.

The trade-off

You give up some of The Phantom Pain’s open-ended freedom. Splinter Cell is the better recommendation for focus and discipline, not for the largest menu of possible solutions.

4. Dishonored 2 — experimentation through powers and vertical routes

Dishonored 2 is a strong alternative when you enjoy stealth as a set of interacting systems. It replaces Metal Gear’s military realism with supernatural powers, unusual traversal and environments that can be approached from multiple heights and directions.

What makes it distinctive

Verticality changes how you read a level. Instead of treating a guard post as a wall to pass through, you can look above, below and around it. Powers expand that spatial vocabulary, while the environment supplies additional ways to manipulate a situation. The result is stealth that rewards curiosity: you test what a power, route or environmental interaction can accomplish and build a plan around the result.

Who will enjoy the swap

  • Players who want more than gadgets and conventional weapons.
  • Players who enjoy finding routes that the level does not announce directly.
  • Players who are comfortable with a supernatural setting replacing military espionage.

Dishonored 2 is not a substitute for Metal Gear’s story or tone. It is a substitute for the feeling of having a toolbox, a complex space and permission to solve a problem creatively.

5. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided — stealth with augmentations and dialogue

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided suits players who want stealth to interact with conversation, exploration and character abilities. Its augmentations change what your character can do, while dialogue and multiple solutions let you address objectives without relying on a single route.

  • ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
  • GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
  • SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators

Why it belongs on this list

The series treats infiltration as one part of a broader role-playing problem. You may hide and bypass threats, but you can also investigate, talk to people, use technology and select abilities that support your preferred approach. That makes the game a good bridge between a stealth action title and a systems-driven role-playing game.

What to expect

Compared with The Phantom Pain, the freedom is less about a huge military sandbox and more about how your build, information and choices interact with a layered objective. Compared with Hitman, the emphasis is less on disguising yourself inside a social machine and more on combining stealth with dialogue and augmentation-driven options.

Choose it when

  • You want stealth to coexist with dialogue and investigation.
  • You like abilities that alter the routes available to you.
  • You prefer science-fiction world-building to military realism.

6. Sniper Elite 5 — reconnaissance, suppressed shooting and tactical objectives

Sniper Elite 5 is the recommendation for readers whose favorite Metal Gear moments involve scouting, patience and carefully chosen shots. Its stealth identity centers on reconnaissance, positioning and suppressed shooting rather than disguise or supernatural movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tactical loop

You first understand the space: where targets are, how routes connect and which position gives you the information or angle you need. You then decide when to engage and how to remain difficult to locate. This makes preparation a core part of the action rather than a brief pause before combat.

How it compares with Metal Gear Solid

Sniper Elite 5 shares the satisfaction of turning information into a controlled operation, but its emphasis is narrower. It is a better fit for tactical objectives and ranged stealth than for elaborate social infiltration, close-quarters gadget play or the broad improvisational toolbox of The Phantom Pain.

7. Ghost of Tsushima — stealth inside a large historical action world

Ghost of Tsushima offers stealth as one component of a large historical action game. It is suitable if you want to move through a broad world, approach missions from different directions and alternate between infiltration and direct combat.

Why it may appeal to Metal Gear fans

The connection is structural rather than literal. You can survey an area, select an approach and use stealth to reduce danger before the situation becomes a fight. The setting changes the fantasy from modern espionage to historical action, but the underlying appeal of choosing how to enter and when to strike remains.

Know the compromise

Ghost of Tsushima does not aim to reproduce Metal Gear’s military technology, espionage plotting or equipment-driven sandbox. Choose it for the combination of stealth and a large historical action world, not as a direct mechanical replacement.

8. Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater — the current official Metal Gear option

If you want Metal Gear’s own story and survival-stealth structure rather than a substitute, Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is the obvious starting point. Konami describes it as “a remake of the 2004 game METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER.” Its stated release date is 28 August 2025, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Steam.

Why choose the remake

This is the recommendation for readers who want the series’ terminology, characters and survival-oriented stealth framework. It is a directed campaign rather than The Phantom Pain’s open mission sandbox, so its appeal comes from following a defined story and mastering a more focused structure.

How it fits after other entries

After The Phantom Pain, the remake offers a return to the series’ earlier style rather than a larger sequel-style playground. After another stealth game, it provides the most direct route back to Metal Gear’s own combination of survival, fieldcraft and espionage storytelling.

Which stealth game should you pick?

Use the following decision guide to match the recommendation to the feature you miss most.

If you want tactical freedom

Choose Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Its open mission spaces and adaptable tools most closely reproduce the feeling of making a plan, watching it change and improvising your way to the objective.

If you want disguises and replayable planning

Choose Hitman: World of Assassination. Its social-stealth systems make identity, access and observation central to the operation.

If you want strict covert operations

Choose Splinter Cell. It trades broad sandbox freedom for a focused espionage mission structure and disciplined concealment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want powers and vertical exploration

Choose Dishonored 2. Its supernatural abilities and layered spaces reward experimentation rather than military realism.

If you want role-playing choices with stealth

Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Augmentations, dialogue and multiple solutions make infiltration part of a wider decision system.

If you want reconnaissance and shooting

Choose Sniper Elite 5. It emphasizes observation, positioning, suppressed fire and tactical objectives.

If you want an open historical action setting

Choose Ghost of Tsushima. It blends infiltration with a large historical world and direct combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want Metal Gear’s own survival-stealth story

Choose Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. It is the current official remake and the only recommendation here that returns you directly to Metal Gear’s established world.

How forgiving should detection be?

Your tolerance for mistakes is another useful separator. The Phantom Pain is built to let you adapt when circumstances change. Hitman lets knowledge from an imperfect first attempt improve a later run. Splinter Cell is the more disciplined option when you want detection to carry greater operational weight. Dishonored 2 and Deus Ex let abilities and alternate routes help you recover, while Sniper Elite 5 rewards preventing exposure through reconnaissance and positioning.

These are different kinds of forgiveness, not a universal difficulty ranking. A game can be generous because it offers more ways to recover, or demanding because it expects you to understand the situation before acting.

What no alternative reproduces

Metal Gear Solid’s identity comes from the combination of systems, tone and series storytelling. Hitman matches planning but not military fieldcraft. Splinter Cell matches covert professionalism but is more directed. Dishonored 2 matches systemic creativity but changes realism for supernatural powers. Deus Ex matches layered solutions but adds role-playing and dialogue. Sniper Elite 5 matches reconnaissance and controlled shooting, while Ghost of Tsushima changes both period and combat language. The Snake Eater remake preserves the series itself but does not offer The Phantom Pain’s open mission structure.

That is why a preference-based choice works better than a claim that one game is universally “the next Metal Gear.” Start with the feature you want to retain, then accept the setting or structure that comes with it.
