Star Wars: Republic Commando is the best fit if you want ground combat as a non-Force soldier, while Star Wars: Squadrons is the clearest choice for first-person starfighter piloting. Both games center on roles that do not require controlling a Jedi or swinging a lightsaber. Star Wars Battlefront II works only if you can avoid optional hero characters, and Star Wars: The Old Republic is a conditional role-playing option because Jedi and Sith are built into its available classes.

What “without Jedi or lightsaber combat” can mean

There are two different standards behind this request. A strict standard excludes games in which Jedi, Sith, lightsabers or Force-user characters are available at all. A role-focused standard accepts a game when its main campaign or primary activity is built around another role, even if an optional mode lets you select an iconic Force user.

Under the strict standard, Republic Commando and Squadrons are the strongest recommendations in this group. Under the role-focused standard, Battlefront II becomes viable because you can play as a regular trooper, operate vehicles and fly starfighters without choosing a hero. The Old Republic remains borderline: you can select a bounty hunter or another non-Jedi role, but Jedi and Sith are central choices rather than incidental cameos.

This distinction matters because “no lightsabers” does not always mean “no Jedi anywhere in the game.” Check the type of exposure you are avoiding before buying. A game may keep lightsabers out of its main missions while still featuring Force users in a separate mode, story branch or character roster.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Primary role Jedi or lightsaber exposure Solo and multiplayer scope Best fit
Star Wars: Republic Commando Clone Trooper squad leader Centers on a non-Jedi commando role; no Jedi-focused premise is established for the recommendation Squad-based ground shooter; the supplied descriptions emphasize campaign-style operations rather than a broad multiplayer feature set Players who want tactical infantry combat and squad commands
Star Wars: Squadrons First-person starfighter pilot Its central activity is flying ships rather than using a lightsaber Single-player story, 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles Players who want cockpit combat and space dogfights
Star Wars Battlefront II Trooper, vehicle crew, starfighter pilot or hero Optional hero and iconic-character play means it is not strictly lightsaber-free Special-forces campaign plus large multiplayer battles Players who want variety and can deliberately avoid hero modes
Star Wars: The Old Republic Class-based role-playing character Jedi and Sith are available alongside bounty hunters and other roles Role-playing structure; the supplied material does not establish a specific mode breakdown Players willing to avoid Force-user classes while accepting their presence in the setting

1. Star Wars: Republic Commando — best strict match for ground combat

Your role

Republic Commando puts you in the role of an elite Clone Trooper operating behind enemy lines during the Clone Wars. The important difference from a Jedi-centered game is the source of your effectiveness: you are a trained commando working with a squad, not a Force user whose abilities define the encounter.

GamesRadar’s description emphasizes the behind-enemy-lines commando premise, while TechRadar highlights squad commands and squadmate artificial intelligence. Together, those descriptions point to a combat fantasy built around positioning, team coordination and military tools rather than lightsaber duels.

Why it fits a no-lightsaber request

  • The player identity is a Clone Trooper commando rather than a Jedi or Sith.
  • Squad commands are part of the appeal, so your decisions concern your team’s actions instead of Force powers.
  • The game’s defining viewpoint is ground-level infantry combat during the Clone Wars.

This makes Republic Commando the safest recommendation when “without Jedi” means you do not want to control a Force user. It also avoids the ambiguity found in games that advertise a trooper option but place heroes at the center of the overall experience.

What the squad focus changes

A squad shooter asks you to think beyond your own weapon. You are responsible for directing teammates and reading how squadmate AI responds to your commands. That gives the game a different rhythm from a character-action title: success depends on using the team as a coordinated unit, not on mastering a lightsaber combo or special ability tree.

For readers who prefer a military science-fiction tone, this is the most direct way to get Star Wars atmosphere without making Jedi mythology the gameplay engine. The setting still belongs to the Clone Wars, so the wider era can include Force users in the fiction, but the recommended player role remains the commando.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Republic Commando if you want a focused, ground-based shooter.
  • Choose it if issuing squad commands sounds more appealing than managing a starfighter cockpit.
  • Choose it if you want the clearest separation from playable Jedi and lightsaber systems.

Important limits

The detailed gameplay characterization above comes from current editorial descriptions rather than a retrieved, functioning official support page. The official support destination reviewed for the game redirected to a generic help page, so platform, edition and current storefront availability should be checked for your region before purchase. Do not assume that a particular physical release, digital edition or console version is still stocked everywhere.

2. Star Wars: Squadrons — best for starfighter pilots

The core fantasy

Squadrons is the cleanest recommendation if your ideal Star Wars game is about flying an X-wing-style or TIE-style starfighter rather than fighting on foot. The official description centers on starship combat, with 5v5 dogfights, fleet battles, customizable starfighters and a single-player story. The full game can also be played in virtual reality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the player spends the main activity in a cockpit, the game does not ask you to wield a lightsaber. Its tension comes from piloting, target selection, ship configuration and team tactics in space. That makes it a strict match for readers who want Star Wars action without a Jedi control scheme.

Modes and what they are for

Mode or feature What it offers Choose it when
Single-player story A self-contained campaign-style experience built around starfighter action You want to play alone and avoid relying on a competitive population
5v5 dogfights Team-based starfighter battles with a clearly defined opposing side You want compact matches and direct ship-to-ship engagements
Fleet battles Larger objective-driven starfighter engagements You prefer a broader battle flow over a simple elimination match
Virtual reality support The full game can be played in VR You already own compatible VR hardware and want a cockpit perspective
Customizable starfighters Ship configuration choices that let you tailor your craft You enjoy adjusting a loadout or role before a match

Controls: controller, mouse and keyboard, or HOTAS

TechRadar describes support for an optional HOTAS setup in addition to standard controller and mouse-and-keyboard controls. A flight stick can make the cockpit experience more appealing to enthusiasts, but it is not a requirement. Buy or use a HOTAS only if you specifically want dedicated throttle-and-stick control; the game is designed to be approachable with ordinary inputs as well.

Before buying accessories, decide whether you are seeking immersion or basic functionality. A standard controller lets you start immediately. Mouse and keyboard may suit players who already use that layout for PC games. HOTAS is an enthusiast upgrade, not a prerequisite for accessing the story, dogfights or fleet battles.

Why Squadrons is a strict match

  • The player’s primary identity is a starfighter pilot.
  • The advertised activities are ship combat modes, not lightsaber encounters.
  • Its single-player story gives you a solo option without requiring a Jedi class.
  • Its multiplayer formats are organized around starfighters and teams.

Who should choose it

Pick Squadrons if you want the strongest contrast with Jedi games: you are seated in a starfighter, reading the battlefield through instruments and managing the demands of a dogfight. It is also the best option here if multiplayer variety matters, because the official feature set explicitly includes both 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles.

Availability caveat

Storefront inventory, supported platforms, editions and physical-versus-digital options can vary by country and date. Verify the exact version offered to you. The feature descriptions establish the game’s modes and controls, but they do not establish a universal price or a permanently available retail package.

3. Star Wars Battlefront II — broad battles with optional hero exposure

Why it is tempting

Battlefront II covers more types of Star Wars action than either Republic Commando or Squadrons. Its official descriptions include a special-forces campaign, regular troopers, vehicles, starfighters and iconic characters. That breadth makes it attractive if you want to switch between infantry, vehicles and space combat instead of committing to one role.

It is not, however, a strict recommendation for someone who wants Jedi and lightsabers absent from the entire game. The roster and modes explicitly include iconic characters, so Force-user combat can appear when you choose a hero or enter content built around those characters.

How to use it as a non-Jedi game

  1. Select the campaign or multiplayer activities that place you in the role of a regular trooper, vehicle operator or starfighter pilot.
  2. Do not select hero-character slots when a mode offers them.
  3. Check the mode description before starting, because the presence of iconic characters is part of the game’s broader design.
  4. If seeing or fighting lightsaber characters at all would spoil the experience, choose Republic Commando or Squadrons instead.

What you gain

  • A wider battlefield fantasy than a dedicated commando shooter.
  • Access to ground troops, vehicles and starfighters within one game.
  • A special-forces campaign for solo play.
  • Large multiplayer battles for players who want scale and variety.

What you give up

You give up certainty. Even if you personally remain a trooper, the overall game still includes hero characters. That means Battlefront II meets a role-focused definition of “without Jedi,” not a literal definition that excludes all Jedi-related content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this option only when your boundary is “I do not want to control a Jedi or use a lightsaber.” If your boundary is “I do not want Jedi or lightsabers to appear,” this is the wrong recommendation.

4. Star Wars: The Old Republic — a conditional role-playing choice

Non-Jedi classes exist

Lucasfilm’s games catalog describes The Old Republic as allowing players to choose among Jedi, Sith, bounty hunters and other roles. That gives you a path to a non-Force-user character, especially if the appeal is inhabiting a profession rather than reenacting a Jedi fantasy.

Why it is not a strict recommendation

Jedi and Sith are not optional background details in this game’s premise; they are central available roles. Even when you choose a bounty hunter or another class, the setting and character choices remain built around a galaxy where Force users are a major part of the available experience.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For that reason, place The Old Republic below the other three choices if avoiding Jedi content is your main requirement. It is suitable only when you are comfortable selecting a non-Jedi class while accepting that Jedi and Sith remain part of the game’s world and roster.

Who should consider it

  • Choose it if role-playing depth matters more than a completely Force-free setting.
  • Choose a bounty hunter or another non-Jedi class if you do not want to control a Jedi.
  • Skip it if the presence of Jedi or Sith in the game is itself unacceptable.

Choose by the experience you actually want

You want the clearest no-Jedi answer

Start with Republic Commando. Its commando identity and squad-command structure keep the focus on Clone Trooper ground operations. Squadrons is the other strong answer if you would rather fly than fight on foot.

You want solo play

Republic Commando is the natural ground-combat choice. Squadrons has a specifically described single-player story, making it the best solo option if starfighters are your priority. Battlefront II also includes a special-forces campaign, but its wider game still contains optional hero content.

You want competitive multiplayer

Squadrons offers clearly defined 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles. Battlefront II offers larger battles with multiple unit types, but you must avoid hero selections to keep your own play centered on non-Jedi roles.

You want vehicles and variety

Battlefront II is the broadest choice because its descriptions include troopers, vehicles and starfighters. Treat that breadth as a trade-off: the same roster that provides variety also includes iconic characters and therefore prevents a strict lightsaber-free label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want a role-playing character rather than a shooter pilot

The Old Republic is the relevant option, provided you accept its mixed setting. Select a bounty hunter or another non-Jedi role, and understand that Jedi and Sith remain central alternatives rather than content the game removes.

A practical buying and setup checklist

Confirm your tolerance for Jedi content

  1. Write down whether you mean “I will not control a Jedi” or “I do not want Jedi or lightsabers present at all.”
  2. For the strict interpretation, shortlist Republic Commando and Squadrons.
  3. For the role-focused interpretation, add Battlefront II and possibly The Old Republic.

Match the control style

  • For squad commands and infantry combat, use Republic Commando.
  • For cockpit flying, begin Squadrons with a standard controller or mouse and keyboard.
  • Add a HOTAS only if you want a dedicated flight setup; it is optional.
  • For mixed infantry, vehicle and starfighter play, use Battlefront II.
  • For class selection and role-playing, use The Old Republic.

Check the exact edition and region

Retail availability and formats change. Confirm the platform, edition, language options and whether you are buying a physical or digital product in your country. A listing’s current availability does not establish that the same package exists on every platform or in every region.

Set expectations before multiplayer

Squadrons’ 5v5 and fleet-battle formats are explicitly team-based. Battlefront II’s broader battles can include several unit categories and optional heroes. If you want every match to preserve a non-Jedi identity, review the selected mode and character slots before launching rather than assuming the whole game follows the same rule.

Common mistakes when searching for a lightsaber-free Star Wars game

Equating a trooper option with a trooper-only game

Battlefront II demonstrates why this is risky. A game can let you play a trooper while still making heroes available elsewhere. Ask whether the game centers on the role or merely includes it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring optional content

Optional does not mean absent. If your requirement is absolute, avoid any title whose official description includes iconic Force-user characters, even if you can decline to select them.

Assuming a flight stick is mandatory

Squadrons supports HOTAS, but TechRadar also describes standard controller and mouse-and-keyboard play. Treat the flight stick as an immersion choice, not a system requirement.

Assuming every listing is interchangeable

Platform, edition and regional inventory can differ. Verify the specific product you are considering instead of relying on a generic game title.

Bottom-line decision

Choose Republic Commando for the most direct non-Jedi ground-shooter experience. Choose Squadrons for a starfighter-focused game with a single-player story, 5v5 dogfights, fleet battles and optional VR or HOTAS support. Choose Battlefront II only when optional hero play is acceptable and you want the widest mix of troopers, vehicles and starfighters. Choose The Old Republic only if you are comfortable selecting a non-Jedi class in a role-playing game where Jedi and Sith remain central alternatives.
