There is no single best WH-1000XM5 setup. The right combination depends on how much outside sound you need, whether you prefer a neutral or shaped sound, and whether automatic speech detection helps or interrupts you. Start with noise control, then tune EQ, Speak-to-Chat, 360 Reality Audio and DSEE only when each solves a specific need.
Sony now calls its phone app Sony | Sound Connect. Older Sony pages and the headphones’ original documentation may still say Headphones Connect; they refer to the same companion-app family. Sony does not provide a PC version, although settings saved from your phone can remain active when the headphones are connected to a computer.

What are the best settings for Sony WH-1000XM5?
Use the following as a starting point rather than a universal preset. The most useful setting depends on the sound around you, the type of content you are hearing and whether you want the headphones to react automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Situation | Noise control | EQ approach | Speak-to-Chat | Other controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airplane, train or loud street | Noise canceling | Start flat; adjust only if familiar music sounds too thin or boomy | Usually off unless you regularly need short conversations | Quick Attention for announcements |
| Office, campus or walking near traffic | Ambient sound, at a level that lets you hear nearby activity | Personal preference | Optional | Keep transparency available for brief interactions |
| Focused listening at home | Noise canceling or your preferred ambient level | Try one change at a time and save a custom profile if offered | Off if music should never pause unexpectedly | Consider 360 Reality Audio only with a supported service |
| Frequent brief conversations | Your normal noise-control mode | Any preferred profile | On, if automatic detection is reliable for your voice | Quick Attention is a manual alternative |
| Quiet reading or podcasts | Choose the mode that leaves speech easiest to follow | Try a vocal emphasis only if voices need more presence | Optional; test for accidental triggers | Use Quick Attention when you need to hear one remark |
The app exposes noise canceling, ambient sound, equalizer, 360 Reality Audio and DSEE controls, but Sony warns that menus and functions can vary by model. The paths below are for the WH-1000XM5 and current Sound Connect terminology. If an item is missing, update the app and confirm that the headphones are connected.

Choose settings by the problem you are solving
If the problem is steady background noise, begin with noise canceling rather than changing several sound-quality controls. If the problem is that you cannot hear a colleague or an approaching vehicle, ambient sound is the relevant control. If music sounds too bright, dull, bass-heavy or thin, use the equalizer. If you want an occasional conversation without touching the phone, compare Speak-to-Chat with the manual Quick Attention gesture. If you mainly listen to compatible immersive releases, 360 Reality Audio is the setting that warrants profile setup.
This order matters because it keeps the cause and effect clear. Changing noise control, EQ and DSEE simultaneously makes it difficult to know which control helped. Make one change, replay familiar material, and keep the change only when it improves the situation you actually encounter.
How to find WH-1000XM5 settings in the app
- Install or update Sony | Sound Connect on your phone.
- Turn on the WH-1000XM5 and pair them with the phone through Bluetooth.
- Open the app and select the WH-1000XM5 from the device list.
- Open the device page or My Device. Sound, noise-control and personalization cards are located there; labels can change as Sony updates the app.
- Change one control, listen for a few minutes, and then decide whether to keep it. This makes it easier to identify which setting helped.
Sony’s app documentation describes the available personalization categories at Sony | Sound Connect support. Sony’s introductory WH-1000XM5 guidance is also useful when you are learning the sound-around-you controls: Get to know your new Headphones.
If you are searching for “Headphones Connect” in your phone’s app store or in an older help page, look for Sony | Sound Connect instead. Sony’s current documentation uses the newer name, while older WH-1000XM5 material can retain the former name. The naming change does not mean you need a different model of headphones.
Noise canceling or ambient sound: which should you use?
Noise canceling
Noise canceling is intended to reduce sounds around you. It is the better starting point when engine rumble, air-conditioning, crowds or other steady environmental noise is masking music or speech. The setting does not guarantee that every sound disappears, and the most effective level depends on the environment and how the headphones fit.
Use it when your priority is fewer environmental sounds, not because it is automatically the best sound-quality mode. A quiet room, a train carriage and a busy street present different conditions, so judge the result where you normally listen. If you still need to hear announcements or people, switch to ambient sound or use Quick Attention for the short interval.
Ambient sound
Ambient sound allows more of the surrounding environment through the headphone microphones. Use it when you need awareness of announcements, colleagues, cyclists, vehicles or someone approaching you. Increase it when you need more external sound and reduce it when the environment is distracting. There is no level that is safest or best for every location, so make the choice based on what you need to hear at that moment.

Ambient sound is therefore a situational choice rather than a permanent transparency recommendation. You might prefer more outside sound while walking, a lower level at a desk and noise canceling on a flight. Check the level again when the environment changes instead of assuming the last setting remains appropriate.

Quick switching without opening the app
For a short conversation or announcement, place your hand over the entire right touch sensor. This activates Quick Attention, which lets ambient sound through while the panel remains covered. Remove your hand and the shortcut ends. It is useful when you do not want to change the saved noise-control setting.
Keep the right panel fully covered; touching only part of it may not activate the feature. Sony documents the touch panel and Quick Attention behavior in its touch sensor control guide. Because Quick Attention is temporary, it is also a practical alternative for people who find automatic Speak-to-Chat interruptions distracting.
How to set the WH-1000XM5 equalizer
The equalizer changes the balance between low, mid and high frequencies. A bass-oriented choice can add weight to drums and electronic music; a vocal or treble emphasis can make voices and detail stand out. These are listening preferences, not objective quality improvements.
A reliable way to tune EQ
- Open the WH-1000XM5 device page in Sound Connect and select Equalizer.
- Listen to a familiar recording before changing anything.
- Try an available preset if its description matches what you want.
- If you use a custom EQ, move one control at a time and make small changes.
- Replay the same section at the same volume. If the result is worse on several recordings, undo that change.
- Save the custom setting when the app offers a save option, giving it a name that describes its use, such as “podcasts” or “travel.”
Do not judge an EQ profile from one badly mastered track. Compare several familiar recordings and spoken audio, because a setting that adds excitement to music can make speech boomy or tiring. A profile that suits electronic music is not necessarily the one you will want for a call or podcast.
The app’s EQ controls are described in Sony’s Sound Connect documentation; Sony does not identify one preset as universally best. If you cannot hear a useful difference, leave the EQ unchanged rather than forcing a custom curve. The goal is a balance you prefer, not a technically “correct” shape.
Should you turn on Speak-to-Chat?
Speak-to-Chat uses the headphones’ microphones to detect your voice. When it recognizes speech, playback is lowered or paused/muted so you can talk without removing the headphones. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support guidance says, “In the factory setting, Speak-to-Chat is disabled.”
Turn Speak-to-Chat on
- Open Sound Connect and choose My Device.
- Select Device settings.
- Open Sound.
- Select Speak-to-Chat and enable it.
Sony’s documented menu path is Sound Connect → My Device → Device settings → Sound → Speak-to-Chat. Once enabled, speak normally while wearing the headphones. The feature is designed for hands-free, brief interactions rather than a guaranteed voice-activity detector.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Short or quiet speech may not be detected.
- Background noise can make detection less reliable.
- The headphones close the Speak-to-Chat mode after 30 seconds without detected speech.
- Moving, humming or talking along with music can trigger it when you did not intend to start a conversation.
Enable it when you often need to answer someone quickly. Turn it off when accidental pauses are more annoying than removing one earcup or using Quick Attention. That is a practical choice, not a quality rating of the feature.

Remember that Speak-to-Chat and Quick Attention solve the same broad problem in different ways. Speak-to-Chat is automatic and depends on detecting your voice. Quick Attention is manual and lasts only while you cover the right panel. If detection misses quiet speech, or if music pauses whenever you sing along, the manual gesture gives you more predictable control.
Is 360 Reality Audio worth setting up?
360 Reality Audio setup can create a hearing profile based on the shape of your ears. The profile is saved to the headphones and linked with compatible streaming applications. The benefit therefore depends on both your profile and whether the service and content you use support 360 Reality Audio.
Set up a profile
- Open the 360 Reality Audio section in Sound Connect.
- Follow the ear-shape or ear-photo instructions shown by the app.
- Complete the profile and save it to the WH-1000XM5.
- Open a supported streaming app and follow its 360 Reality Audio linking instructions, if required.
Do not expect the profile to transform every song, podcast or video. For ordinary stereo content, the setting is not established as a universal improvement. It is most relevant if you already use a service that offers compatible 360 Reality Audio releases.
Recommended Free Tools
Before spending time on setup, check whether your streaming service actually offers compatible content. A saved hearing profile does not make an unsupported app or ordinary stereo track into 360 Reality Audio. This is an optional personalization step, not a requirement for using the WH-1000XM5.
What does DSEE do, and should it be on?
DSEE is one of Sound Connect’s personalization controls. Sony presents it as a sound-quality option, but the WH-1000XM5 material does not establish one setting that is best for every source, codec or listener. Treat it as an experiment rather than a required upgrade.
A practical DSEE check
- Play a familiar track with DSEE off.
- Enable DSEE in the app and replay the same passage at the same volume.
- Keep it enabled only if you prefer the result across more than one recording.
- Disable it when the change is hard to hear, makes the sound less natural or uses battery you would rather preserve.
Your phone’s source quality, streaming settings and the recording itself can matter more than any single personalization switch. Avoid judging DSEE from a claim that it guarantees an audible improvement; Sony’s published guidance does not make that promise.
Because DSEE is optional, it belongs after noise control and basic EQ in your setup process. First make sure the headphones are handling the environment and tonal balance the way you want. Then compare DSEE with identical source material and volume so a louder playback level does not make the change seem better.
Use Quick Attention as a manual speech shortcut
Quick Attention is separate from Speak-to-Chat. Cover the entire right touch panel with your hand to hear ambient sound immediately. It remains active only while the panel is covered, so you control exactly when outside audio is admitted.

When it is useful
- Hearing a train or airport announcement without opening the app.
- Answering a short question from a colleague.
- Checking your surroundings while keeping your current noise-control mode saved.
- Temporarily admitting outside sound when Speak-to-Chat is turned off.
If the shortcut does not respond, check that your hand covers the whole sensor rather than just the center, and make sure the touch panel is not obstructed by clothing or another object. The control-panel instructions are in Sony’s support article dated July 8, 2025: Using the Touch Sensor Control Panel of the Wireless Headphones.
Settings that carry over to a computer
Sony does not offer a WH-1000XM5 PC app. Configure the headphones from Sound Connect on your phone first, then connect them to the computer. Settings stored in the headphones can carry over, but computer-side Bluetooth software cannot expose every phone-app control.
For example, you may set noise control, EQ or Speak-to-Chat on the phone and then use the headphones with a laptop. If you need to change a setting that is not available on the computer, disconnect from the laptop, adjust it in Sound Connect, and reconnect. Function availability can vary by model and app version, so do not assume that every menu shown in a guide appears on every device.

The computer is supplying audio; Sound Connect is where Sony exposes the model-specific controls. Make the adjustment on the phone, verify that it is active, and then return to the computer.
Check firmware and app compatibility before troubleshooting
Keep Sound Connect current and look for a headphone update inside the app’s device settings. Sony search results list WH-1000XM5 firmware version 2.5.1 as released December 18, 2025, with Sound Connect 12.4.0 or later required; check Sony’s live support page and the app before treating that number as the latest available version.
- Open Sound Connect and select the WH-1000XM5.
- Open the device settings or system section.
- Choose the software or firmware update option when it appears.
- Keep the headphones powered on, close to the phone and sufficiently charged until the update finishes.
The firmware listing is at Sony’s WH-1000XM5 firmware support page. If an update is offered, follow the version and battery instructions displayed by Sony rather than relying on an old screenshot.
If a control or menu is missing
- Confirm that the WH-1000XM5, rather than another paired Sony device, is selected in Sound Connect.
- Update the phone app and check whether a headphone firmware update is offered.
- Reconnect the headphones to the phone before looking again in My Device or Device settings.
- Remember that Sony says available menus and functions vary by model, so a control described for another model may not appear on yours.
Do not infer that a missing menu means the headphones are defective. App versions, model differences and connection status can all affect what is shown.

- Looking for a PC companion app: Sony provides Sound Connect for phones, not a separate WH-1000XM5 PC app.
- Expecting noise canceling to remove every sound: it is intended to reduce environmental noise, not promise silence in every setting.
- Leaving ambient sound at one level everywhere: the useful level changes with traffic, conversations and announcements.
- Assuming EQ has one correct preset: Sony describes EQ as frequency-balance customization, so preference and content matter.
- Expecting every voice to trigger Speak-to-Chat: short or quiet speech may not be detected, and the mode closes after 30 seconds without detected speech.
- Covering only part of the touch panel: Quick Attention requires the entire right sensor to be covered and ends when you uncover it.
- Using 360 Reality Audio with unsupported content: profile personalization is linked to compatible streaming applications.
- Treating DSEE as mandatory: compare it with familiar material and keep it only if you prefer the result.
A decision checklist for your everyday profile
- Need quiet: choose noise canceling and begin with a neutral EQ.
- Need awareness: choose ambient sound and adjust its level to the environment.
- Need occasional conversation: use Quick Attention, or enable Speak-to-Chat if automatic detection is consistently convenient.
- Want a different tonal balance: change one EQ control at a time and save a custom profile if available.
- Use compatible immersive music: complete the 360 Reality Audio hearing profile and link the supported service.
- Curious about DSEE: compare it with the same track and volume, then keep only the setting you genuinely prefer.
- Use a computer: configure the headphones on your phone because Sony has no PC companion app.
These choices let you build a profile around your environment instead of chasing a single “best” switch. The controls are reversible, so change only the setting that addresses the problem you are hearing or the sound you need to notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change WH-1000XM5 settings in the app?
Install or update Sony | Sound Connect, connect the WH-1000XM5 by Bluetooth, select the headphones, and open the device page or My Device. Noise control, EQ and personalization controls appear there, although Sony says menus can vary by model and app version.
How do I turn off Speak-to-Chat on my Sony headphones?
In Sound Connect, open My Device → Device settings → Sound → Speak-to-Chat, then disable it. Sony says Speak-to-Chat is disabled in the factory setting.
Should I use noise canceling or ambient sound?
Use noise canceling when you want fewer surrounding sounds. Use ambient sound when you need to hear announcements, colleagues, vehicles or other nearby activity. Adjust the choice to the environment rather than treating one mode as universally best.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Speak-to-Chat fail to respond?
Sony notes that short or quiet speech may not be detected. Background noise can also interfere, and Speak-to-Chat closes after 30 seconds without detected speech.
How do I activate Quick Attention?
Cover the entire right touch sensor with your hand. Ambient sound is admitted only while the panel remains covered; uncovering it ends the shortcut.
Does the WH-1000XM5 have a PC app?
No. Sony provides Sound Connect for phones. Configure settings on your phone first; saved settings can carry over when the headphones connect to a computer.
Is 360 Reality Audio supported on every streaming service?
No. Sony links the hearing-profile setup with supported streaming applications, so the benefit depends on both compatible service and compatible content.
Is there one best EQ or DSEE setting?
No universal preset is established in Sony’s guidance. Adjust EQ for your preferred frequency balance and compare DSEE with familiar recordings at the same volume before deciding.
The Bottom Line
The best WH-1000XM5 setup is situational: noise canceling for fewer environmental sounds, ambient sound when you need awareness, EQ for your preferred tonal balance, Speak-to-Chat only when automatic pauses help, and Quick Attention for controlled one-off conversations. Set up 360 Reality Audio only for compatible services, test DSEE instead of assuming it is necessary, and use Sound Connect on your phone because Sony has no PC app. If a menu is missing, update the app and headphones, reconnect them, and remember that available functions vary by model.
