There is no single “best” EQ for every listener or recording. For both headphones, start with Sony Sound Connect’s Custom EQ, make small changes while listening to familiar tracks at a moderate volume, and save a preset only after it works across several recordings. The WH-CH520 benefits from broad, gentle adjustments because its app presents five bands; the WH-CH530’s 10-band EQ allows narrower cuts. In both cases, reduce excessive bass or upper-mid energy before adding large treble or bass boosts.

Quick answer: where to start

Open the Sony companion app (now branded Sony Sound Connect in current documentation; older references may call it Headphones Connect), select your headset, and choose Sound or Equalizer. Select Custom rather than a genre preset. Leave the middle controls near 0 dB at first, then adjust one or two controls at a time.

  • WH-CH520: If kick drums, bass guitar or room rumble sound thick, make a small cut with the lowest bass control. If voices and guitars sound shouty, nasal or too forward, make a small cut in the upper-mid control. Keep the highest control flat initially; add only a slight treble lift if recordings remain dull.
  • WH-CH530: Start from a flat or neutral profile and use the 10 bands for small, targeted cuts. Map the same ideas—less excessive bass and less aggressive upper mids—to the closest individual bands instead of applying a large change across adjacent sliders.
  • Podcasts and speech: Use a modest bass reduction to remove rumble. Keep the speech-presence area close to flat, cutting the upper mids slightly only when consonants sound sharp. Avoid large treble boosts, which can make hiss and sibilance worse.

These are starting points, not Sony-certified curves. Your ear shape, pad seal, listening level, source and preferred target can all change the result.

How to change EQ in Sony Sound Connect

1. Install, connect and update

  1. Install Sony Sound Connect from your device’s official app store and turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Power on the WH-CH520 or WH-CH530, then pair it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings if it is not already paired.
  3. Open Sound Connect and select the connected headset. If the app cannot find it, keep the headset awake, bring it close to the phone, and remove an old duplicate pairing before trying again.
  4. Check for headset and app updates. Sony’s WH-CH520 help guide and the WH-CH530/WH-CH535 guide both advise current software for full functions. Firmware menus and wording can move after an update, so use the current labels shown in your installation.

2. Open the equalizer

In the headset page, open Sound, then Equalizer (the exact path can vary by app version). Choose Custom. On the WH-CH520, the practical interface is a five-band graphic equalizer; on the WH-CH530, What Hi-Fi reports a 10-band equalizer. You may also see a separate CLEAR BASS control on the CH520.

3. Make a controlled change

  1. Play a familiar track containing vocals, bass and cymbals, or use a podcast with naturally recorded speech.
  2. Set a moderate, comfortable volume. Louder playback can make bass and treble seem more impressive and can hide problems.
  3. Move one slider a small amount. Listen for 20–30 seconds, then return it to 0 dB to confirm that the change—not a different section of the track—is responsible.
  4. Change a second slider only after you understand the first. Large simultaneous boosts make it difficult to identify what helped.
  5. Compare the adjusted sound with the original at the same volume. If the EQ makes the headset louder, lower its level before judging tonal balance.

4. Save only a repeatable result

Use the app’s save or preset option and give the profile a descriptive name such as “Balanced,” “Speech” or “Low-volume.” Test it on several familiar recordings before relying on it. A curve that fixes one poorly mastered track can make other material less natural.

What the controls are correcting

Equalizer bands are not quality controls; they change the relative level of frequency ranges. A cut is usually safer than a large boost because boosts reduce headroom and can increase distortion or harshness.

Region What you may hear Useful first move
Lowest bass Rumble, kick impact and bass-guitar weight Cut slightly when the sound is boomy or masks speech; do not remove it if you simply prefer a powerful low end.
Low mids Warmth, thickness and the body of male voices Use a small cut when music sounds congested. Too much reduction makes voices thin.
Upper mids Vocal intelligibility, guitars, snare attack and presence Cut slightly when vocals or guitars shout, sound nasal or become fatiguing.
Treble Cymbal definition, “s” sounds and perceived detail Keep near flat first. Add only a small lift for dull recordings; cut when hiss or sibilance is prominent.

These descriptions are intentionally broad because the two models expose different numbers of controls. Use the nearest available band rather than assuming that a slider marked with a particular frequency will behave identically on every phone or app release.

WH-CH520: a balanced starting profile

The CH520’s five-band layout encourages broad, gentle moves. SoundGuys’ 2026 laboratory table found the measured response above its preference curve at several bass and presence points: 50 Hz (+7.2 dB), 63 Hz (+7.8 dB), 80 Hz (+7.7 dB), 2.5 kHz (+8.9 dB), 3.15 kHz (+13.0 dB) and 4 kHz (+10.1 dB). Those figures support trying modest cuts in the lowest bass and upper-mid areas, but they are not a universal correction. Measurement rigs, ear shape, fit, seal and target curves differ.

Balanced music

  • Choose Custom and leave the center bands close to 0 dB.
  • Reduce the lowest bass control slightly if kick drums or bass lines dominate other instruments.
  • Reduce the upper-mid control slightly if vocals, guitars or snare hits sound shouty or nasal.
  • Keep the highest control flat for the first listening pass. Add a small lift only when multiple well-recorded tracks sound consistently dull.

Do not automatically cut every frequency named in the SoundGuys table. The table describes one measured unit against one preference curve, not a prescription for your ears. If your CH520 already sounds balanced, leave the EQ flat.

Vocal, podcast and video speech

  • Make a small bass cut to reduce traffic, air-conditioner and handling rumble.
  • Keep the vocal-presence region near flat. If speech becomes sharp, make a small upper-mid cut rather than a broad treble reduction.
  • Avoid a large treble boost. It can emphasize microphone hiss, “s” sounds and compressed streaming artifacts.

Bass-impact preference

If you want more impact and the headset is not already boomy, use a small low-bass boost or the CH520’s CLEAR BASS control. Raise one control at a time and stop when bass begins to mask vocals. A broad boost across several low bands is more likely to sound muddy and to consume headroom than a restrained change to the lowest control.

WH-CH530: using the 10-band equalizer

The CH530 gives you more frequency resolution than the CH520. That does not mean every slider should move. A 10-band interface can tempt you to create a jagged curve that only works on one song.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

Neutral starting point

  1. Select a flat or neutral preset, then switch to the custom view.
  2. Listen for the specific problem: excessive low end, a shouty presence region, or dull treble.
  3. Cut the closest single band by a small amount. If the problem spans two neighboring bands, divide a modest correction between them instead of applying a large identical cut to both.
  4. Leave unrelated bands at 0 dB and check the result on several recordings.

Adapting the CH520 approach

For a CH520-style balance, target the CH530 bands nearest the low-bass area when the sound is boomy, then target the bands around the vocal and guitar presence region when those elements are aggressive. The exact slider labels and center frequencies can differ with app versions, so follow the values displayed in your installation rather than copying a screenshot from an older release.

Find Your Equalizer

Sony’s Sound Connect documentation for the CH530 describes a Find Your Equalizer personalization feature where available. Treat its result as a starting profile: listen to it against a flat preset, keep changes that improve several familiar tracks, and remove changes that solve only one recording. Availability can depend on the headset, phone, region and software version.

EQ profiles by listening goal

Goal WH-CH520 approach WH-CH530 approach Check for
Balanced music Small low-bass cut if boomy; small upper-mid cut if shouty; treble near flat. Use the nearest low-bass and upper-mid bands for smaller, narrower cuts. Vocals should remain natural while bass stays distinct from the kick.
Vocal clarity Reduce rumble with a modest bass cut; keep presence close to flat. Use a restrained low-bass reduction and avoid boosting every presence band. Speech should be intelligible without sounding nasal or piercing.
Podcasts and calls Small bass cut; upper mids only slightly reduced if consonants hurt. Use one or two narrow cuts for boom or sharpness. Listen for hiss, “s” fatigue and voices becoming thin.
More bass impact Try a small low-bass or CLEAR BASS boost, stopping before masking begins. Boost one low band modestly rather than duplicating a large boost across several bands. Check that vocals and kick definition remain clear.

DSEE, connection options and other Sound Connect controls

EQ is only one part of the app. Sony’s WH-CH520 help guide lists Equalizer/CLEAR BASS, customized EQ, DSEE, multipoint management, Bluetooth codec display and 360 Reality Audio configuration. The WH-CH530/WH-CH535 guide lists customized EQ, DSEE, maximum-volume control, Bluetooth connection-priority settings, Auto Switch and software updates.

DSEE

DSEE is optional processing configured in Sound Connect. Sony states that it operates when the headset is connected over Bluetooth. It is not an EQ preset and does not guarantee an audible improvement. Compare DSEE on and off with the streaming services and files you actually use, at the same volume. Keep it off if you prefer the unprocessed result or need to conserve battery; keep it on if it consistently improves your sources without adding artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multipoint, codec and connection priority

The CH520 app can manage multipoint and show the active Bluetooth codec. The CH530 guide adds connection-priority settings and Auto Switch. These options affect how the headset connects and which device supplies audio; they do not replace tonal EQ. If an EQ seems to disappear after changing devices, confirm that the headset is still connected through Sound Connect and that the desired custom profile remains selected.

Maximum-volume control

The cited CH530/CH535 guide includes a maximum-volume control, while the comparison material does not list that control for the CH520. Use it as a listening-safety limit, not as a way to make a quiet recording sound balanced. Excessive volume can change your tonal judgment and risks hearing damage.

360 Reality Audio

The CH520 guide includes 360 Reality Audio configuration. Spatial processing can alter perceived balance and vocal placement, so evaluate a normal stereo EQ with the same spatial mode you intend to use. Do not judge an EQ with one mode enabled and then assume it will sound identical when that mode is disabled.

WH-CH520 versus WH-CH530: which is easier to tune?

Comparison point WH-CH520 WH-CH530
Equalizer granularity Five-band interface reported by What Hi-Fi; broad, gentle adjustments are most practical. 10-band interface reported by What Hi-Fi; supports narrower cuts when used conservatively.
Best first strategy Lower excessive bass or upper mids by a small amount; keep other bands near flat. Start flat and adjust the closest single band to the audible problem.
Safety control listed in cited guide Maximum-volume control not listed in the cited comparison. Maximum-volume control listed in the WH-CH530/WH-CH535 guide.
Other app functions cited Equalizer/CLEAR BASS, DSEE, multipoint, codec display and 360 Reality Audio. Customized EQ, DSEE, maximum-volume control, connection-priority settings, Auto Switch and updates.
Who benefits most Listeners who want a quick broad balance and do not need surgical corrections. Listeners who want to target a narrow resonance or personalize several regions carefully.

Neither model is automatically “better” because it has more sliders. More bands provide control, but they also make over-adjustment easier. Choose the model and profile that match your listening goal, not the number of controls alone.

Why an EQ recipe may not sound right

Fit and seal change bass

On-ear positioning, hair, glasses and pad wear can change the seal and therefore low-frequency output. Re-seat the headphones before making a large bass correction. If the sound changes dramatically each time you move the earcups, solve the fit issue first.

Volume changes the judgment

A louder setting often seems to have more bass and detail. Match volume when comparing flat and custom profiles. If you boost several bands, reduce the overall level before deciding that the new curve is better.

The source may be the problem

Streaming normalization, a phone-wide equalizer, game audio settings and a recording’s own mastering can stack with Sound Connect. Disable other tone controls while building a profile, then re-enable them one at a time if you need them for a particular app.

Bluetooth or app state is stale

  1. Pause playback and confirm the correct CH520 or CH530 is selected in Sound Connect.
  2. Close and reopen the app, then verify that the custom profile is still active.
  3. Disconnect the headset from other devices if multipoint or Auto Switch keeps moving the audio path.
  4. Check app and headset software updates, then repeat the comparison.
  5. If the problem persists, forget the Bluetooth pairing, restart the phone and headset, and pair again.

DSEE or spatial processing masks the change

Compare DSEE and 360 Reality Audio consistently. Processing can make a small EQ difference difficult to hear or can alter the apparent brightness and bass. Decide on the processing mode first, then tune the custom profile for that mode.

A repeatable method for creating your own preset

  1. Define one goal: balanced music, stronger bass, clearer speech or less fatigue.
  2. Choose reference material: use at least three familiar tracks and one naturally recorded voice segment.
  3. Start flat: reset the custom EQ and set a moderate volume.
  4. Identify the excess: note whether the problem is rumble, thickness, shoutiness, hiss or dullness.
  5. Cut before boosting: make the smallest change that addresses the problem.
  6. Change one or two controls: wait, then return to the original setting to verify the difference.
  7. Check across sources: test music, speech and a recording with busy instrumentation.
  8. Name and save: store a profile only when it works beyond the track that motivated it.
  9. Revisit after a break: fatigue and loudness adaptation can make an initially exciting curve seem less natural later.

This process is more reliable than copying a fixed “best” number because it accounts for unit variation, fit, hearing, source quality and personal preference.

What the published evidence does—and does not—show

SoundGuys’ 2026 measurements justify testing modest bass and upper-mid reductions on the WH-CH520, but they do not establish a universal correction. RTINGS (2024) describes the WH-CH520 as supporting graphic EQ and virtual-surround features through Sony’s companion app. Sony publishes the available app functions, yet does not publish one universally optimal EQ curve for either headset. No authoritative Sony statistic or named-person quotation establishes a single best preset.

That distinction matters: a measured response is evidence for where to experiment, not proof that every listener should apply the same values. App screens, labels and available features can also change with updates, so follow the controls shown for your connected model rather than relying on an unchanged screenshot.

Frequently asked questions

Does the WH-CH520 have a better EQ than the WH-CH530?

No. The CH520’s five bands are simpler for broad changes; the CH530’s 10 bands offer finer control. The better interface is the one that matches how precisely you need to tune.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a large treble boost to improve clarity?

Usually not. Start by reducing excessive bass or upper-mid energy. Large treble boosts can expose hiss and sibilance, especially on speech and compressed streams.

Is DSEE always worth enabling?

No. It is optional Bluetooth processing. Compare it on and off with your normal sources and retain the setting that sounds better to you without introducing artifacts.

Why did my EQ change after switching phones?

Confirm that the headset is connected through Sound Connect, that the custom profile is selected, and that multipoint or Auto Switch has not moved playback to another device. App and firmware updates can also change labels or behavior.

Can I copy a WH-CH520 five-band preset to the WH-CH530?

Only as a concept. Map the broad bass and upper-mid intentions to the nearest CH530 bands, then use smaller changes. The two interfaces do not expose identical controls, so a literal slider-for-slider copy is not valid.
