Snapseed flattens the edit stack during export, so the exported copy is broadly compatible but no longer re-editable as a Snapseed project.
The short answer
After removing an object with Snapseed’s Healing tool, use this two-file workflow:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Save the image, or use Save a copy on iOS, to preserve an editable working version and its edit stack.
- Use Export to create the delivery copy. Export flattens the edit stack so other applications can display the visible result.
- In the export controls, select the highest available JPEG quality for photographs in which texture, hair, lettering, or fine edges matter.
- Choose the original dimensions, or the largest size available, rather than reducing the image unless you have a specific upload or sharing limit.
There is no single Google-mandated “best” quality percentage. The right choice depends on the destination, the amount of detail in the repaired area, and the controls exposed by your Snapseed version and device.
Why object removal makes export choices noticeable
The Healing tool replaces an unwanted area using surrounding image information. That repair can contain fine textures, repeated patterns, straight lines, or soft edges that reveal compression more readily than a flat, uncomplicated scene. Export settings do not change the Healing algorithm or create a special object-removal format; the edit follows Snapseed’s normal Save-versus-Export behavior.

A flattened JPEG can also make a repair look different when opened in another application. The visible pixels are still present, but the other app cannot access Snapseed’s individual Healing operation or adjust its edit stack. A working master is therefore valuable whenever you may need to refine the patch, undo it, or make a different crop later.
Save and Export are different jobs
| Action | What it creates | Editability | Compatibility | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save | Snapseed’s working image with the edit stack retained | Can be reopened and changed in Snapseed | Designed primarily as a Snapseed working file | Keep as the master while revisions are possible |
| Save a copy on iOS | A separate working copy with the stack preserved | Can be revised in Snapseed | Useful when you want to protect the original file | Maintain a second editable version on iPhone or iPad |
| Export | A duplicate with the edit stack flattened | Cannot be re-edited as the original Snapseed stack | Google says it can be read by other image-editing programs | Share, upload, print, or open in a third-party application |
Google Snapseed Help explicitly recommends Export when you need Snapseed edits to be viewable by all third-party applications. Its description of the resulting JPEG says the edit stack is flattened and cannot be re-edited, while the file can be read by other image-editing software.
A reliable workflow after removing an object
-
Open the source image and make the repair
Open the photo in Snapseed, choose Tools, select Healing, and paint over the unwanted object. Work through the whole object, including shadows or detached pieces that should also disappear. The goal at this stage is a convincing image, not a final file format.

Inspect the repaired area before committing to delivery
Check the result at a close view and at the normal viewing size. Look for repeated textures, broken edges, mismatched tones, or a line that no longer joins naturally. If the correction needs work, stay in the editable Snapseed version and revise the Healing edit before exporting.

Preserve the editable master
Tap Save. On iOS, Snapseed may present Save a copy; use it when you want a separate working file rather than changing the original. Google describes these workflows as non-destructive because the edit stack remains available for later changes.
-
Start the delivery copy with Export
Choose Export after the master is safe. This creates a new file and flattens the visible edits. Export is the appropriate branch when the recipient’s software does not have Snapseed or when you need predictable compatibility.
-
Set quality for the destination
Open the export settings exposed by your version of Snapseed. For a detail-sensitive final image, choose the highest JPEG quality available. Google’s current help does not prescribe a universal percentage, so do not treat a particular number as an official requirement.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Keep dimensions as large as practical
Choose the original size or the largest size offered when you need the most detail. If the destination imposes a maximum pixel dimension or file size, reduce the copy for that destination rather than replacing your full-size master.

Verify the exported file
Open the export in the application that will actually receive it. Confirm that the object is gone, the image orientation is correct, important details remain, and the file is stored where you expect. Keep the editable master even after the delivery file passes inspection.
Choosing the best quality setting
Use the highest available quality for detail-critical images
High JPEG quality generally preserves more detail and produces a larger file. That trade-off is most worthwhile when the removed object sat over grass, fabric, brick, foliage, text, hair, or a sharp architectural edge. A larger file also gives a print service or later editor more information to work with, although it cannot restore detail that was never captured or that the Healing tool had to reconstruct.
Do not confuse a percentage with a guarantee
Some Snapseed versions expose a numeric quality control, while the exact labels and available choices can vary by platform and app version. Google’s official help documents the export behavior but does not state one universal JPEG-quality percentage. If you choose a number such as 90 or 100, that is a practical preference for your use case, not a Google-prescribed threshold.

When a lower setting is reasonable
A smaller JPEG can be appropriate for a quick message, a service with a strict upload limit, or a copy intended only for a small on-screen preview. Make that reduced export from the preserved master. Do not repeatedly open and re-save the same JPEG at progressively lower settings; each JPEG re-encoding step can discard additional information.

Resolution: retain the original dimensions when possible
Google says Snapseed saves an image at the same resolution as the original, up to the maximum size the device can process. That qualification matters: “full resolution” means the largest size your particular phone or tablet and Snapseed build can handle, not an unlimited guarantee.
| Device situation documented by Google | What to expect | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Many Android devices | Snapseed can process up to 20 megapixels | Keep original dimensions if they are within the device’s limit |
| Some older Android devices | The maximum may be 8 megapixels | Do not promise that a larger source will export at its original pixel count |
| Several listed iPhone and iPad models | Google documents a 20-megapixel maximum for those supported models | Use the largest available size and check the resulting file |
| Any device or model not covered by those limits | The effective cap is device- and version-dependent | Inspect the size option and verify the exported dimensions |
If your original photo exceeds the device cap, Snapseed may reduce it during processing or export. That is a hardware and software limit, not a consequence of removing an object. Saving the original source outside Snapseed is therefore sensible when maximum archival resolution matters.
JPEG or PNG after object removal?
JPEG is the documented compatibility path
Snapseed’s export workflow is centered on a flattened JPEG. On iOS, Google states that the flattened version created by Export is JPEG. JPEG is generally the practical choice for a normal camera photograph because it is widely readable and offers a controllable quality-versus-file-size trade-off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PNG is not a guaranteed universal Snapseed workflow
Google’s current official help does not document a guaranteed PNG workflow for every Snapseed platform. The presence of format controls in an export screen can vary by app version and operating system, so do not assume that a PNG option will appear or behave identically on every device. If your destination specifically requires PNG, confirm that your version offers it and test the resulting file in the receiving application.

Transparency is a separate question
Removing an object from a photograph normally means filling the area with surrounding scene content, not making a transparent hole. Choosing PNG, if available, would not by itself turn the repaired region transparent. Decide first whether you need a normal photograph or an image with transparency; Snapseed’s Healing operation addresses the former.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recommended settings by destination
| Destination | Quality choice | Size choice | File workflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print or high-detail archive | Highest available JPEG quality | Original or largest available dimensions | Save the editable master, then Export a full-size delivery copy |
| Another photo editor | Highest available quality unless that editor specifies otherwise | Original dimensions where possible | Use Export so the visible Healing result is readable outside Snapseed |
| Social or web upload with no stated limit | High quality; avoid unnecessary reduction | Largest practical size, then let the service process it | Export a separate upload copy and retain the master |
| Messaging or quick preview | Moderate quality can be acceptable if file size is the priority | Reduce only if the service or recipient needs a smaller file | Never use the reduced copy as your only editable version |
| A service that specifies exact pixel dimensions or bytes | Choose the highest quality that stays within the limit | Match the service’s stated dimensions | Make a destination-specific export from the saved master |
Why an edit can look different in another app
- The edit stack was flattened. The receiving app sees rendered pixels, not the individual Healing operation.
- JPEG compression was applied. Lower quality can soften tiny textures or create blocky edges around a repair.
- The image was resized. A device cap or destination limit may reduce the pixel dimensions.
- The other app applies its own display processing. Fit-to-screen previews, color management, and automatic optimization can make a file appear different without changing the exported pixels.
- The wrong file was opened. A Save file, an earlier export, and a newly created Export copy may have similar names.
To isolate the cause, compare the pixel dimensions and file type first, then inspect the same area at 100% view in both applications. If the dimensions differ, resolve sizing before judging the Healing result. If the dimensions match, compare the JPEG quality and confirm that you opened the newest export.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The recipient cannot see the object removal | You shared a working file or an earlier unedited image | Open the latest Export copy and send that file |
| You cannot adjust the Healing edit later | You kept only the flattened export | Return to the saved Snapseed master; if it was deleted, the individual edit stack may not be recoverable |
| The export is smaller than the original | A device processing cap or a selected sizing limit reduced it | Choose the largest available size and check whether the source exceeds the device’s documented limit |
| The repaired texture looks soft | JPEG quality was reduced, or the image was resized | Re-export from the master at the highest available quality and original dimensions |
| A PNG option is missing | Your platform or Snapseed version does not expose a documented PNG workflow | Use the supported JPEG export, or verify the requirement in another application that explicitly supports PNG |
| The file is too large to upload | High quality and full dimensions create a larger JPEG | Keep the master, then create a separate reduced-size or lower-quality delivery copy within the service’s limit |
How to keep a clean master-and-delivery system
Use filenames or folders that make the two roles obvious. For example, keep the Snapseed working image in a “masters” location and place the flattened JPEG in a “deliveries” location. The exact naming convention is up to you; the important distinction is that the master remains available for revisions and the export is treated as disposable or destination-specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor multiple destinations, export separately rather than forcing one compromise file to serve every purpose. A print copy may need the largest dimensions and highest quality, while a messaging copy may need a smaller file. Both should originate from the same editable master so you do not stack compression or resize an already reduced export.
What “full resolution” can and cannot mean
Keeping the original dimensions preserves the source pixel count only within Snapseed’s device-dependent processing ceiling. It does not increase the camera’s detail, recover pixels lost in an earlier resize, or guarantee a particular print size. It also does not mean that every receiving service will keep those dimensions; websites and messaging apps may resize or recompress files after upload.
For that reason, judge Snapseed’s export separately from what happens afterward. First verify the file created by Snapseed. Then check the downloaded or received version if the destination performs its own optimization.
Quick Recap
A final decision checklist
- Did you remove the object with Tools > Healing and inspect the repaired area?
- Did you use Save, or Save a copy on iOS, before creating delivery files?
- Did you choose Export for a file that must work in another application?
- Did you select the highest available JPEG quality when detail matters?
- Did you keep the original dimensions or the largest available size?
- Did you account for Google’s device-dependent limits, including 20 megapixels on documented devices and as little as 8 megapixels on some older Android devices?
- Did you verify the exported file itself rather than assuming the last saved image is the delivery copy?
