For a compact, conventional e-reader, start with current 6-inch options: the Amazon Kindle, BOOX Poke5 or Go 6 (Gen II), and Kobo Clara BW. The BOOX Poke5 is the clearest documented choice if you need full device dimensions and Android reading apps; Kindle may be simplest if you already use its store. A phone-shaped reader such as BOOX Palma 2 may be worth considering for pocket carry, but current specifications are not established here. No screen size or marketing label can guarantee a fit in your pocket or a comfortable one-handed grip.
What makes an e-reader small enough for one hand and a pocket?
A 6-inch screen measurement is its diagonal, not the device’s full height or width. Those exterior dimensions—and any case—determine whether a reader fits a particular pocket. Grip comfort also depends on hand size, device shape, and how you hold it, so “one-handed” is a personal fit rather than a verified feature.

The listed weights are not results from a common independent test: BOOX gives approximate figures for the Poke5 and Go 6 (Gen II), while TechRadar lists the Clara BW’s weight. Amazon’s announcement does not provide a weight for its 2026 6-inch Kindle.

Choose by the reading services and controls you use
A compact device is only useful if it works with the books and services you rely on. BOOX documents Android app support for both the Poke5 and Go 6 (Gen II), which can matter if you want to use reading apps beyond a single manufacturer’s bookstore. The practical choice is to check compatibility with your preferred store, library service, or file workflow before comparing minor differences in weight.

Before buying, check the real carrying size
- Set the pocket requirement. Decide whether the reader needs to fit a trouser pocket, jacket pocket, or small bag.
- Compare exterior measurements. Use height, width, and thickness—not screen diagonal alone. The Poke5’s listed dimensions are 148 × 108 × 6.8 mm; the reviewed Amazon announcement does not state full dimensions for its 2026 Kindle.
- Include the case. Compare the case’s outside dimensions, since a cover can protect the reader but make it less pocket-friendly.
- Check your reading setup. Confirm access to your bookstore, library service, files, and apps, and check the controls and features you actually need.
- Test the fit if possible. Try the device in the intended pocket and hold it one-handed before purchase; people’s pockets and grip preferences vary.
