There is no universal best preset for a new Star Wars game. The right setup depends on whether you need larger text, lower camera motion, simpler controls, a tougher challenge, or a steadier frame rate. Start with readability and comfort, verify your controls, choose a difficulty you can enjoy, and only then tune graphics for your specific platform and display.
Menus and available options differ between games, editions, and platforms. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Outlaws provide useful examples, but their settings should not be treated as a template for every future Star Wars release.

What to change before you start playing
Pause as soon as the game offers its first settings opportunity. A short setup pass prevents the most common early frustrations: unreadable subtitles, a camera that causes discomfort, controls that fight your muscle memory, or a difficulty level that makes the opening hours needlessly stressful.
- Make text and captions readable. Turn dialogue subtitles on if you want them, then check subtitle scale, closed captions, sound-effect captions, and HUD size.
- Confirm the input layout. Review the default controller or keyboard mapping, stick sensitivity, axis inversion, and hold-versus-toggle actions.
- Choose an initial challenge. Select the level that makes exploration and combat enjoyable, and look for assists for navigation, minigames, or combat.
- Reduce motion that bothers you. Check camera shake, ambient sway, motion blur, field of view, and any stabilizing screen aid.
- Set audio output and mix. Verify the selected device and balance dialogue, effects, and music.
- Tune graphics last. Compare performance and quality modes on your own hardware and display after the basics feel right.
Change one or two related settings at a time, test them in ordinary movement and combat, and keep the option that feels better rather than the one that sounds most impressive.

Make subtitles, captions, and interface text usable
Subtitles and closed captions
Dialogue subtitles are the first setting to check if you play with low volume, share a room, or want to follow every line in a noisy environment. If a game separates dialogue subtitles from closed captions, decide whether you also want non-dialogue information such as footsteps, alarms, and environmental sounds displayed.
Jedi: Survivor documents subtitle and caption controls, while the official beginner guide for Outlaws describes larger subtitles and text-to-speech among its accessibility choices. Those examples show why you should inspect the accessibility menu rather than assume the main display menu contains every text option.
Text size and HUD scale
Increase subtitle or HUD size until you can read it from your normal seating distance without leaning toward the screen. Do not choose a number simply because it is the largest or the default recommendation; comfortable readability depends on screen size, viewing distance, resolution, and eyesight. If an oversized HUD obscures exploration or combat, look for separate controls for subtitle scale and HUD scale instead of compromising both.

- Move closer temporarily to determine whether the problem is size or display calibration.
- Check brightness and contrast on the game and display before enlarging every element.
- Enable high-contrast or color-profile options if the game provides them.
- Use text-to-speech where available, especially for menus or long tutorials.
Set controls and sensitivity before learning bad habits
Start from the default, then remap deliberately
Play a minute of movement, camera control, attack, dodge, jump, and interaction with the default layout. Identify actions that you repeatedly miss or that require an uncomfortable grip. Remap only those first, then retest. Extensive remapping is documented in Jedi: Survivor; its PS5 listing also identifies basic remapping and stick-sensitivity options for that edition.

Stick sensitivity and axis inversion
Raise sensitivity if turning feels sluggish, or lower it if small thumb movements send the camera past your target. Make small changes and test both ordinary traversal and a short fight; a setting that feels quick in a menu can be difficult when aiming or parrying. Axis inversion is personal preference. Change one axis at a time so you know which adjustment helped.
Hold versus toggle actions
Look for separate hold and toggle choices for aiming, sprinting, crouching, or accessibility actions. A toggle can reduce hand fatigue, while a hold can prevent an action from remaining active accidentally. There is no universally correct choice; use the one that lets you release your grip and still respond reliably.
Keyboard, mouse, and controller choices
On PC, use the input method that gives you consistent camera and combat control. EA specifically recommends a controller for Jedi: Survivor on PC, but that is advice for that game and platform, not a requirement for all Star Wars games or all players. Keyboard-and-mouse players should not feel compelled to buy new hardware if their current setup is comfortable.

EA states that Jedi: Survivor difficulty can be changed outside combat without changing rewards. Pause after a difficult section, make the change when the game allows it, and avoid waiting until frustration has already spoiled the session.
What the documented Outlaws choices mean
The official Outlaws tips describe Story, Regular, and Hard choices that affect player health and enemy difficulty. The same guidance identifies options for lockpicking, slicing, and piloting challenges. If a minigame is the barrier rather than the adventure itself, adjust that assist instead of lowering every combat encounter.
Separate challenge from convenience
- Use combat difficulty to control enemy pressure and survivability.
- Use minigame assists when a particular interaction is inaccessible or simply not enjoyable.
- Use navigation or exploration aids when you want fewer pauses to read the map or search for a route.
- Revisit choices after the tutorial, because the opening may not represent the game’s full demands.
Reduce motion and improve visual comfort
Camera shake, sway, and motion blur
Camera shake and ambient camera sway can make impacts feel stronger but can also cause discomfort. Turn them down or off if the view feels unstable. Motion blur can smooth fast movement for some players and make the image feel smeared for others. Test it while sprinting, rotating the camera, and entering combat rather than judging it from a static screenshot.
Field of view
A wider field of view shows more at the edges of the screen, which can help some players track nearby threats. A narrower view can make distant objects appear larger and may feel less distorted. Adjust in small increments and test both exploration and close combat. The correct value depends on your display and viewing distance, not on a single universal number.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Stabilizing aids, color, and contrast
Jedi: Survivor lists a stabilizing UI dot, color profiles, and other visual options alongside camera controls. A fixed point can help some players when the camera moves; others may find it distracting. High-contrast and color adjustments are useful when enemies, interactable objects, or interface elements blend into the environment. Treat every option as a tool to try, not a mandatory preset.
A simple comfort test
- Stand still and rotate the camera slowly.
- Sprint through an open area.
- Perform a fight with frequent dodges or parries.
- Keep the setting that leaves you comfortable after several minutes, not merely the one that looks best in a menu preview.
Balance image quality and performance on your hardware
Performance mode versus quality mode
If the game offers a performance mode, compare it with the visual-quality option on the device and display you actually use. The documented Jedi: Survivor performance mode limits resolution to 1080p to increase frame rate. That is a game-specific tradeoff; it does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate recommendation for other Star Wars titles.
Which graphics controls matter first
Check the options the game exposes, such as view distance, effects quality, resolution, and ray tracing. EA’s PC first-boot information for Jedi: Survivor lists ray tracing separately, while its accessibility material documents performance mode and graphics controls. Higher quality can improve detail and lighting, while a performance-focused choice can make camera movement and combat feel more responsive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use your display as the deciding factor
- On a high-refresh display, test whether the performance option makes motion noticeably easier to follow.
- On a large 4K screen viewed from close range, check whether reduced resolution is distracting.
- On a television where you sit farther away, the resolution reduction may be less obvious than the change in smoothness.
- Do not assume a console option exists on PC, or that a PC setting appears on every console edition.
An up-to-date game may be required for all documented accessibility options in Jedi: Survivor. Install available updates before concluding that a setting is missing.

Set the audio mix for dialogue and your output device
Verify where sound is going
Open the audio menu and confirm the selected output device before changing individual sliders. A game can be sending sound to a monitor, headset, television, or another device you are not wearing. Jedi: Survivor documents audio-output selection alongside its mix controls.
Balance dialogue, effects, and music
Use the dialogue slider to keep conversations clear without making combat effects painfully loud. Lower music if it masks speech, or lower effects if explosions and lightsaber clashes overwhelm quieter lines. Change one slider, replay a conversation or combat encounter, and then make the next adjustment.
Dynamic range and mono options
Where available, dynamic-range choices can make quiet dialogue easier to hear without forcing loud effects to the same level. Mono output can help when stereo separation makes important sounds difficult to locate or when you use a single speaker. These controls depend on the game and platform, so check the audio menu rather than assuming they exist.

How to tune settings after the opening hour
- Play through the first movement tutorial. Check whether camera speed, inversion, and sprint behavior feel natural.
- Complete one representative fight. If you cannot track attacks, adjust sensitivity, field of view, motion effects, or difficulty one at a time.
- Read a normal story conversation. Confirm subtitle size, caption detail, dialogue volume, and text contrast.
- Try a traversal or minigame. Decide whether an assist is needed for lockpicking, slicing, piloting, or another interaction.
- Compare graphics modes in the same area. Look at movement, distant detail, lighting, and input response on your own screen.
- Save your final choices. If the game offers profiles or per-user settings, preserve the setup so another player does not overwrite it.
Revisit settings whenever you change displays, move from speakers to headphones, install a major update, or begin playing on a different platform. A setting that worked on a monitor may not be comfortable on a television across the room.
Troubleshoot common problems without resetting everything
“I cannot read subtitles or menus.”
- Increase subtitle scale and HUD scale separately if both controls exist.
- Enable closed captions or text-to-speech when you need additional context.
- Check brightness, contrast, and color-profile choices.
- Confirm the game is updated if an accessibility option documented for your version is absent.
“The camera makes me uncomfortable.”
- Turn down camera shake and ambient sway.
- Test motion blur off, then try a modest field-of-view change.
- Use a stabilizing screen aid if the game provides one.
- Take a break rather than forcing yourself through discomfort; settings are meant to support continued play.
“Combat feels too hard or too easy.”
- Change difficulty outside combat when the game permits it.
- Use a targeted combat or minigame assist instead of altering unrelated systems.
- Check sensitivity and button mapping before blaming difficulty; missed inputs can feel like an enemy-strength problem.
“The game looks sharp but feels uneven.”
- Compare the performance and quality modes in the same location.
- On Jedi: Survivor, remember that the documented performance mode trades resolution for increased frame rate and limits resolution to 1080p.
- Check whether ray tracing or another expensive graphics control is enabled on PC.
- Use the mode that feels best on your display rather than assuming the higher-quality label is better.
“Dialogue is hard to hear.”
- Confirm the correct output device.
- Raise dialogue or lower effects and music separately.
- Try a dynamic-range or mono option if your edition provides one.
- Pair the audio change with subtitles so you are not relying on a single channel of information.
What not to assume about a new Star Wars game
A familiar franchise name does not guarantee familiar menus. One title may offer extensive remapping while another provides only basic controls. A console edition may expose different graphics or accessibility choices from the PC version. Defaults, resolution targets, frame-rate behavior, and available assists are not established across the entire series.
Use the settings menu as an inventory: identify what your game actually offers, decide which player problem each option solves, and avoid changing settings that are not causing trouble. Official guidance for Jedi: Survivor and Outlaws supports inspecting options before play, but it does not establish a universal preset for every Star Wars release.
