The Best Second-Screen Setups for Watching Esports

For most esports viewers, the best setup keeps the match on one fast, front-and-center primary monitor and puts Discord, live chat, maps, guides, statistics or stream controls on a secondary display. Your main screen should receive the performance budget: MSI’s 2026 esports guidance points to a 24- or 27-inch FHD or QHD monitor running at 240Hz or higher. The second monitor can prioritize readable text, useful inputs and flexible positioning instead of matching that refresh rate.

What the second screen should do

A second display is a utility panel, not a second competitive game view. MSI describes using it for Discord, team communication, game guides, maps and live chat, while LG recommends keeping gameplay on the main screen and using the other display for chat, stats or content. This division keeps the match unobstructed while making information available at a glance.

  • Competitive play: Keep the game, replay or tournament stream on the primary monitor.
  • Communication: Place Discord, team voice controls and text chat on the second screen.
  • Information: Use maps, build guides, player statistics, brackets or a browser there.
  • Streaming: Put stream controls, alerts, moderation tools and a production preview on the utility display.

Choose the right monitor roles

Primary esports monitor

For the display carrying fast game motion, MSI lists 24 or 27 inches, FHD or QHD resolution and 240Hz or higher as current esports targets. Pick the resolution and size that let you see the whole image comfortably; do not sacrifice the primary screen’s response and refresh performance just to make both monitors identical.

Secondary utility monitor

A secondary display does not need 240Hz when it mainly shows text, dashboards or controls. Give priority to sharp, comfortable text, straightforward HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C connectivity, and a stand or mount that supports the position you actually need. A 24-inch 1080p IPS monitor with a VESA mount or pivot stand is a practical starting point for chat and browser work.

Use Recommended emphasis Refresh-rate priority
Match or game 24–27 inches, FHD or QHD, strong motion clarity 240Hz or higher, according to MSI’s 2026 guidance
Discord, chat and guides Readable 1080p text, IPS viewing angles, adjustable stand Lower than the primary is acceptable
Wide dashboard or video Landscape width and convenient window placement Choose for smooth browsing or previewing rather than competition

Pick a layout based on how you glance

Side-by-side: the easiest all-purpose arrangement

Place the primary monitor directly in front of you and the utility screen beside it. This is simplest to configure and works best when you look at both displays frequently. Keep the secondary close enough that checking chat does not require turning your shoulders.

Portrait side monitor: best for text-heavy chat

Rotate a 24-inch 1080p IPS display vertically when the main job is Twitch-style chat, Discord history or a long list of messages. MSI’s streaming guidance says portrait orientation reduces scrolling and shows more conversation at once. Use landscape instead for a wide statistics dashboard, video, a production preview or any application that needs horizontal space.

Stacked monitors: save desk width

Stacking one display above the other preserves a narrow desk. Keep the primary straight ahead and reserve the upper monitor for occasional glances; looking upward repeatedly can increase neck movement. A stacked layout is less suitable when you must read chat continuously during a match.

Dual-monitor arm: reclaim depth and add adjustment

A dual-monitor arm can free the desk space taken by two stands and makes side, portrait and stacked positions easier to fine-tune. It is particularly useful on shallow desks or when the secondary must rotate. Verify that the arm’s weight range and VESA pattern match both monitors before buying it.

Set viewing height and distance

Ergonomics matter during long tournaments and streaming sessions. HP recommends placing the top edge at or just below eye level and viewing from about 1.5 times the monitor’s diagonal. The American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine’s 2022 esports position statement places the monitor center 5–6 inches below the straight-ahead vision line and 20–28 inches away. Cleveland Clinic advises the 20-20-20 pattern: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

These recommendations describe adjustment ranges rather than a single compulsory measurement. Start by centering the primary screen, then set height so you are not tilting your head up or down. Align the secondary to minimize repeated neck rotation; an upper display should be for brief checks, not constant reading.

Configure two monitors in Windows

  1. Check outputs first. Confirm that the computer or graphics card has the HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C outputs required by both displays. Check whether an adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
  2. Connect the second monitor and turn it on.
  3. Open Settings > System > Display. If Windows does not show the display, select Detect.
  4. Use the numbered monitor diagrams and drag them into the same left-right or stacked order as the physical screens. This makes the pointer move naturally between them.
  5. Under the multiple-display option, select Extend so the game and utility windows can remain independent. Windows also offers Duplicate, PC screen only and Second screen only when those modes are useful.
  6. Select each display separately to set its orientation. Choose Portrait for a vertical chat monitor and Landscape for a wide dashboard or video.
  7. Open the advanced display controls and confirm the primary monitor is using its intended refresh rate. Recheck this after changing cables, adapters or graphics settings.

Match the setup to your desk and game

Situation Best starting layout Reason
Frequent Discord and chat checks Primary plus portrait side monitor More message history with less scrolling
Wide stats, video or production preview Primary plus landscape side monitor Horizontal applications use the available width
Narrow desk Stacked displays or a dual-monitor arm Reduces desk width or stand depth
Both screens viewed constantly Side-by-side, aligned at similar height Less vertical and neck movement than a stacked setup
Occasional reference checks Primary centered, secondary off to the side or above Keeps the competitive view dominant

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Buying a 240Hz second monitor unnecessarily: Spend that performance budget on the primary unless the secondary also carries fast gameplay.
  • Putting the primary off-center: Reposition the layout so the main screen is directly ahead; the utility display should support it, not dictate your posture.
  • Using portrait mode for a wide application: Switch the secondary back to landscape for video, broad dashboards or production previews.
  • Windows displays in the wrong order: In Display settings, drag the numbered screens to match their physical positions.
  • The second monitor is missing: Use Detect, then check the cable, input selection, adapter capability and graphics-card output.
  • Refresh rate falls after connecting both screens: Reopen each display’s advanced settings and select the intended rate for the primary; confirm that the cable and output support it.
  • Neck or eye strain: Lower or raise the screen within the cited eye-level ranges, maintain the recommended viewing distance and follow the 20-20-20 breaks.

Bottom line for an esports viewing setup

Buy and position the system around one high-refresh primary monitor, then choose the second display for the information you actually need. Portrait is the strongest choice for text-heavy chat; landscape is better for wide dashboards and video. Side-by-side suits frequent glances, while stacking or an arm helps when desk space is limited. Windows’ Extend mode, correct physical ordering and a deliberate refresh-rate check complete the setup.
