The Best S3 Clients for Windows and Mac: A Defensible 2026 Shortlist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence-backed list of ten current S3 clients that all support both Windows and Mac. A smaller shortlist is more useful: Cyberduck is the strongest general-purpose browser, Mountain Duck is the best fit for a mounted drive, CloudMounter is another cross-platform drive option, and Brows3 is a focused S3 desktop client. CS Browser is a Windows-only choice. Your best pick depends on whether you need object transfers, Finder/File Explorer integration, AWS authentication, or a particular S3-compatible provider.

What are the best S3 clients for Windows and Mac?

The four cross-platform candidates below document support for Windows and macOS. They are not interchangeable: a graphical browser is safer for deliberate object operations, while a mounted-drive client makes a bucket look like another disk. “S3-compatible” also does not mean identical behavior, so confirm endpoint, authentication and operation support with your provider.

Client Windows and macOS Primary workflow S3 coverage Best for
Cyberduck Yes Graphical browser and transfers AWS plus third-party providers Most users who want a capable desktop browser
Mountain Duck Yes Mounted disk in Finder or File Explorer Amazon S3 and other remote storage Working with objects from normal file-manager applications
CloudMounter Yes Mounted local drive Amazon S3 and cloud services A second cross-platform drive-mount option
Brows3 Yes, plus Linux Focused S3 object browser AWS, MinIO, R2, Wasabi, Spaces, B2 and custom endpoints Hands-on object management across S3-compatible services

These sources do not provide controlled performance tests, security audits or independent price comparisons. Choose by documented workflow and authentication support rather than an unverified speed ranking.

1. Cyberduck: best general-purpose S3 browser

Cyberduck is the strongest all-round choice in this shortlist. Its Windows and macOS applications handle Amazon S3 as well as FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, OpenStack Swift, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure and OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox. That breadth matters if one desktop tool must cover more than object storage.

Its S3 documentation describes AWS and third-party provider connections, large-file uploads, credentials from AWS CLI configuration, IAM Identity Center, STS/assume-role and MFA workflows. You can inspect bucket versioning and choose server-side encryption options where the provider and your permissions expose them.

When Cyberduck is the right fit

  • You want an explicit browser for uploading, downloading, copying, moving or deleting objects.
  • You use more than one storage protocol.
  • Your organization relies on AWS profiles, IAM Identity Center, role assumption or MFA.
  • You need to inspect versions or select server-side encryption during transfers.

Limits to check

Cyberduck cannot grant permissions that your IAM policy does not grant. A third-party endpoint may require a custom connection profile, a particular region or a provider-specific signing behavior. Test a non-production bucket before moving a large workload.

2. Mountain Duck: best for a bucket mounted in Finder or File Explorer

Mountain Duck mounts remote or cloud storage as a disk. On macOS it appears in Finder; on Windows it appears in File Explorer. That makes it suitable when existing applications need a path rather than a browser window.

Mounting modes

  • Online: accesses remote data as needed.
  • Smart Synchronization: keeps selected data synchronized locally.
  • Integrated: integrates the mounted storage with native operating-system APIs.

Documentation also describes Cryptomator-interoperable client-side encryption, file locking, and previewing or reverting previous versions in Amazon S3 buckets. The developer announced Mountain Duck 5 on August 19, 2025, with Integrated Connect Mode, storage-independent versioning and SMB support. IAM Identity Center support is described for Cyberduck 9.5 and Mountain Duck 5.3. Those version-specific details can change, so verify the current release notes before deployment.

Use it when a drive letter or Finder location is essential

Choose Mountain Duck for workflows such as opening a remote document from an application, dragging files between a local folder and a bucket, or exposing shared storage to users who should not learn an S3 browser. Treat network latency, offline behavior and concurrent edits as design constraints; object storage is not automatically equivalent to a local filesystem.

3. CloudMounter: another cross-platform mounted-drive option

CloudMounter says Amazon S3 buckets can be mounted as local drives on Mac or Windows, with access from Finder and Explorer. It is a practical alternative when the mounted-drive model is more important than a specialized object browser.

Its current product page lists macOS version 4.18, released June 18, 2026, and Windows version 3.8, released September 16, 2026. The same page describes offline work as supported on macOS and “Coming soon” on Windows; do not assume offline capability is cross-platform.

Questions to answer before choosing it

  • Will your Windows users need offline access?
  • Does your provider require a custom S3 endpoint or unusual authentication?
  • Do applications write temporary files or rename objects in ways the mounted layer handles differently?

Validate those behaviors with a test bucket and the exact operating-system versions your team uses.

4. Brows3: focused browser for S3-compatible storage

Brows3 lists macOS builds for Intel and Apple Silicon, Windows x64 and Linux. It names Amazon S3, MinIO, Garage, Cloudflare R2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2, STACKIT Object Storage and custom S3-compatible endpoints.

The client supports AWS profiles and direct s3:// paths for some restricted-account workflows. Its vendor positions it for hands-on object management, while scheduled backups and repeatable bulk jobs belong in automation tools. The application is free, but provider requests and data transfers can still create storage charges.

When Brows3 is preferable

Use it when you regularly switch among compatible services or need a focused object-management interface without a mounted filesystem. Confirm each provider’s endpoint, region and supported API operations; compatibility labels do not guarantee identical semantics.

Windows-only option: CS Browser (formerly S3 Browser)

CS Browser is explicitly a Windows client, not a Mac recommendation. The product page says S3 Browser was renamed CS Browser and supports Amazon S3, Glacier and S3-compatible services. Listed capabilities include upload and download, copy, move, rename, delete, permissions, multiple accounts, bucket operations and CloudFront tools.

The page lists Windows 7 SP1, 8.1, 10 and 11, plus Windows Server editions through 2025. Because those requirements are version-sensitive, check the current installer documentation before deploying on a supported or extended-lifecycle operating system.

Why CloudBerry Explorer is not in the current ranking

An older CloudBerry Explorer brochure describes S3 and Glacier transfers, cross-account operations, IAM and bucket-policy management, CloudFront tools, versioning, lifecycle rules, encryption, multipart upload and synchronization. It does not establish current availability, modern Windows or macOS compatibility, or current pricing. Treat it as a historical lead, not a verified recommendation.

How to choose an S3 client for your workflow

Start with the interface you actually need

  • Browser and transfer tool: Cyberduck or Brows3.
  • Finder/File Explorer location: Mountain Duck or CloudMounter.
  • Windows-only administration: CS Browser, if its current requirements fit.

Then verify provider and endpoint support

Record the provider, endpoint hostname, region, required operations and whether path-style or virtual-hosted addressing is required. AWS, MinIO, R2, Wasabi and other services can expose different feature sets even when they implement S3 APIs.

Match authentication to policy

For AWS, determine whether the client can use your AWS CLI configuration, IAM Identity Center, STS role assumption and MFA flow. The credentials may authenticate successfully while still lacking permission to list buckets, read objects, write objects, inspect versions or change encryption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate object storage from a normal filesystem

Object keys resemble paths but do not provide every filesystem guarantee. Test rename, overwrite, locking, partial uploads, concurrent edits, large files and recovery from an interrupted transfer. A mounted drive improves convenience; it does not remove network latency or provider API limits.

Setup checklist for Windows and Mac

  1. Create a least-privilege IAM user, role or federated identity for the required bucket and operations.
  2. Confirm the provider’s endpoint, region, TLS requirements and any custom S3 compatibility settings.
  3. Install the client from its official site and verify the current OS requirements.
  4. Connect to a disposable test bucket before opening production data.
  5. Test list, upload, download, copy, rename, delete and version-recovery operations that your workflow needs.
  6. Review logs and provider billing after a representative transfer; requests and data transfer can cost money even when the desktop application is free.

Troubleshooting common failures

“Access denied” after a successful login

Authentication proves who you are, not what you may do. Check bucket policy, IAM policy, object ownership, KMS permissions and whether the role session is the one you expected. Try listing the specific bucket rather than all buckets if account-level listing is denied.

The endpoint works in one client but not another

Compare region, endpoint hostname, addressing style, signature version, TLS certificate and required path prefix. Use the provider’s connection instructions and a minimal test object. “S3-compatible” services can differ in unsupported operations.

A mounted drive is slow or an application fails to save

Large directory listings, metadata calls and many small objects amplify latency. Try the browser workflow for bulk object operations. Check whether the application requires atomic rename, byte-range writes, file locks or local temporary storage that the mounted mode does not emulate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uploads stop or appear incomplete

Check local disk space, proxy timeouts, network interruption, multipart-upload settings and the provider’s maximum object size. Retry with a small file, then inspect the destination object size and any incomplete multipart uploads according to the provider’s cleanup policy.

Offline files are unavailable

Offline support is product- and platform-specific. CloudMounter’s page lists it for macOS and marks Windows as “Coming soon”; Mountain Duck’s synchronization modes also require deliberate configuration. Do not disconnect a laptop assuming a mounted bucket is cached.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual goal is to obtain clean images or PDFs of web pages—not browse S3 objects—ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

It offers full-page and element capture, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

cURL

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options and authentication. A minimal request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Costs, maintenance and security

Client licensing is only one part of the total cost. S3 providers can charge for requests, storage, retrieval and data transfer. Brows3 explicitly warns that requests and transfers may incur provider charges. Mounted-drive convenience can also increase request volume through metadata operations.

Use least-privilege credentials, short-lived role sessions where possible, MFA for interactive access and encryption options appropriate to the data. Keep clients current, but verify release notes and OS support before broad upgrades—especially for Mountain Duck and CloudMounter version-specific behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one S3 client on both Windows and Mac?

Yes. Cyberduck, Mountain Duck, CloudMounter and Brows3 document Windows and macOS support; CS Browser is documented for Windows.

Is a mounted S3 drive the same as a local disk?

No. It provides a file-manager interface, but latency, object semantics, locking and provider request costs still apply.

Are S3-compatible providers interchangeable?

No. Endpoints, authentication, regions and supported operations can differ, so test the exact provider and client combination.

Do free S3 clients make storage free?

No. Provider requests, storage, retrieval and data-transfer charges can apply independently of the desktop app.
