The best psychological horror games to play if you’re interested in Silent Hill Townfall

If Silent Hill Townfall interests you because it makes you feel watched, uncertain and responsible for interpreting what you see, start with Silent Hill: The Short Message for the closest first-person and series connection. Choose Silent Hill 2 for the franchise’s psychological-horror identity and its unusual approach to endings. Choose Stories Untold or Observation when the appeal is Screen Burn Interactive’s history of using interfaces and narrative structure as part of the horror.

These are focused recommendations rather than claims that any one game duplicates Townfall. The useful question is which part of Konami’s new game you want more of: a first-person viewpoint, Silent Hill continuity, studio lineage, psychological atmosphere, or story-led puzzle design.

What makes Silent Hill Townfall a distinctive reference point?

Silent Hill Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological-horror game set on the remote Scottish island of St. Amelia in 1996. You play Simon Ordell. Konami released it on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store.

It is the Silent Hill series’ first full-length game presented entirely from a first-person perspective. That viewpoint changes how information arrives: you cannot rely on a conventional over-the-shoulder view to read a room, and sound becomes a major part of judging whether something is nearby. The developers describe a design built around tension and escalating uncertainty rather than relying primarily on jump scares and gore.

Townfall also mixes several kinds of play instead of committing to only one. Exploration, evasion, limited weapons and combat all appear, with the appropriate response depending on the encounter. Its most distinctive tool is the CRTV, a pocket television that tunes into unstable signals. You use it to scout for monsters, uncover clues and explore information that is otherwise hidden.

Puzzles are not intended to be a detached sequence of riddles. The developers say they were developed alongside the story, so solving them should reveal information about Simon’s situation and the island. On PlayStation 5, the game also uses 3D audio, DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and motion controls. A compatible controller is therefore an optional way to experience the design, not a required extra purchase.

Those details produce five useful recommendation axes:

  • Viewpoint: Do you specifically want first-person psychological horror?
  • Series connection: Do you want another Silent Hill story and its established symbolic identity?
  • Studio lineage: Are you interested in the team’s earlier experiments with interfaces and narrative form?
  • Psychological atmosphere: Is the pressure of uncertainty more important to you than combat or spectacle?
  • Integrated story and puzzles: Do you want puzzles to explain the protagonist and setting rather than pause the story?

Quick recommendations by the Townfall quality you want

Game Best reason to choose it What the official connection establishes What not to assume
Silent Hill: The Short Message First-person Silent Hill horror Konami producer Motoi Okamoto describes it as a smaller standalone first-person Silent Hill experience released in 2024. It is not a Townfall prequel, and the shared viewpoint was coincidental rather than the result of technical exchange.
Stories Untold Screen Burn’s earlier narrative and interface experiments Okamoto identifies it as an earlier Screen Burn title he had played. The available sources do not establish that its mechanics, structure or platform availability match Townfall.
Observation Another studio-history route into Screen Burn’s design interests Okamoto also identifies it as an earlier Screen Burn title he had played. Its inclusion here is about lineage and narrative experimentation, not proof that it plays like Townfall.
Silent Hill 2 Classic series psychology and a comparable ending structure Okamoto compares the way its main endings are reached with the original Silent Hill and Townfall. This is a narrow structural comparison; it does not establish the same viewpoint, combat or puzzle design.

1. Silent Hill: The Short Message — the clearest first-person connection

Why it belongs on this list

Silent Hill: The Short Message is the most direct recommendation for someone whose interest in Townfall starts with the camera. Konami’s producer describes it as a smaller, standalone first-person Silent Hill experience released in 2024. That makes it the one choice here with both a direct series connection and an explicitly documented first-person presentation.

It is useful as a way to test whether first-person framing is the feature that attracts you. In a first-person horror game, the visible field is limited to what the protagonist can face, so turning, listening and deciding when to move become part of reading the environment. That is especially relevant to Townfall, where audio cues and uncertainty are central to the intended tension.

How its relationship to Townfall should be described

Do not treat The Short Message as a prototype, prequel or technical companion to Townfall. In the PlayStation Blog interview, Okamoto says the two projects did not exchange technical know-how during development. He also says that the shared first-person perspective was coincidental. The safe conclusion is narrower: both games demonstrate that Silent Hill can support a first-person psychological-horror viewpoint, while their development histories remain separate.

Who should pick it first?

  • Pick it first if the phrase “first-person Silent Hill” is the main reason you clicked on this article.
  • Pick it before a studio-history title if you want to stay inside the Silent Hill series rather than follow the developers’ earlier work.
  • Do not choose it expecting the same length, island setting, CRTV tool or ending structure as Townfall; those details are established for Townfall, not as a shared feature set.

2. Stories Untold — follow Screen Burn’s narrative experiments

Why studio lineage matters

Stories Untold is a good choice when your interest is less “another Silent Hill” and more “what does this development team do with horror?” Okamoto names it as an earlier Screen Burn Interactive title he had played. That gives the recommendation a documented studio connection, but not a promise that the games use identical mechanics.

Screen Burn’s relevance to Townfall is its willingness to make the way information is delivered part of the experience. In Townfall, the CRTV is not merely a decorative prop: it tunes into unstable signals, helps locate threats and exposes clues. A reader drawn to that idea may be interested in seeing how the studio approached narrative delivery and retro interfaces before Townfall.

What to look for while playing

Approach Stories Untold as a study in presentation. Pay attention to when the interface gives you information, when it withholds it and how an apparently ordinary interaction changes your understanding of the situation. That is the useful comparison to carry into Townfall: not a claim that the controls or encounter design are the same, but an interest in horror that makes the act of interpreting a signal, screen or instruction part of the story.

Who should choose it?

Choose it if you are most excited by puzzles and narrative framing. It is also the sensible pick for readers who want to understand the creative lineage behind Townfall without assuming that a previous game must be a direct mechanical blueprint. Current platform and edition details are not established by the sources available for this comparison, so verify them separately before buying.

3. Observation — another Screen Burn route into interface-driven horror

Why it is a useful companion recommendation

Okamoto also identifies Observation as an earlier Screen Burn title. Its place in this list is therefore about studio history and experimentation with how a player receives narrative information. If the CRTV’s unstable signals are the feature of Townfall that you keep thinking about, a studio-history pick is more relevant than a generic list of horror games.

Observation should not be marketed as a substitute for Townfall. The official material used for this article does not establish that the two games share a viewpoint, combat model, puzzle rules or release platforms. What it does establish is that both belong to a line of Screen Burn projects that interested Konami’s Silent Hill producer enough to be named when discussing the team.

How to decide between Observation and Stories Untold

  • Choose Stories Untold if you want the strongest emphasis on narrative presentation and puzzle interpretation.
  • Choose Observation if you want a second example of Screen Burn’s earlier work and are curious about how the studio uses an interface to shape a player’s understanding.
  • Choose neither as a guaranteed mechanical match. Their value here is context for the team’s design interests, not a specification sheet for Townfall.

4. Silent Hill 2 — choose it for psychological identity and endings

Why it remains essential context

Silent Hill 2 is the series-history recommendation. If what attracts you to Townfall is Silent Hill’s reputation for psychological horror, personal symbolism and stories that make the protagonist’s inner state matter, this is the natural historical reference point.

The comparison supported by Konami’s interview is specific. Okamoto says the original Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 and Townfall all let players reach their three main endings during a first playthrough. In his words: “All three main endings can be reached right from your first playthrough, whereas the secret ending becomes accessible after clearing the game once.”

  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

What that ending structure means

The design encourages a first run to feel complete while leaving a reason to return. You do not have to clear the game once before seeing any primary conclusion in Townfall. After that first clear, the secret ending becomes available. The same broad first-playthrough accessibility is the narrow point of comparison with the original Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not expand that comparison into a claim that all three games have the same camera, weapons, enemy behavior or puzzle logic. The cited statement concerns how endings are reached. It does not establish mechanical identity.

Who should play it?

Play Silent Hill 2 if you want to place Townfall inside the franchise’s psychological-horror tradition. It is a better first choice than the Screen Burn titles when your priority is series history, and a better choice than The Short Message when the identity of Silent Hill matters more to you than first-person presentation.

Townfall features that should guide your choice

First-person perspective and sound

Townfall is entirely first person, not merely a game that switches into first person for selected scenes. That makes the viewpoint a fundamental part of exploration and threat detection. The developers emphasize that audio cues matter, and the PlayStation 5 version adds 3D audio support. If this is your priority, The Short Message is the only recommendation in this set with an explicitly documented first-person Silent Hill connection.

Evasion, limited weapons and combat

The game does not present combat as the only answer. Encounters can involve evasion, limited weapons or direct combat, so the player has to judge risk and resources. The sources do not establish equivalent combat or stealth systems for the comparison titles. Treat that absence as a reason to choose based on your preferred Townfall quality rather than as evidence that another game offers the same balance.

The CRTV as a horror tool

The CRTV combines several jobs: scouting for monsters, tuning into unstable signals, locating clues and exploring. That makes it both a practical tool and a narrative lens. The player is not simply told that the island is dangerous; the device changes what can be detected and interpreted. This is the strongest reason to consider the Screen Burn titles as lineage picks, while remembering that the official sources do not say their interfaces work identically.

Puzzles that explain the situation

Townfall’s puzzles were developed alongside its story. Their intended purpose is to disclose information about Simon and his circumstances, not to form an unrelated puzzle layer between horror scenes. If that relationship between solving and understanding is your priority, start with Stories Untold as the most directly relevant studio-history lead, then use Silent Hill 2 for the wider series context.

A practical decision guide

  1. Start with the camera. If you want first-person Silent Hill specifically, choose Silent Hill: The Short Message.
  2. Choose the series over the studio. If you want the established psychological-horror identity of Silent Hill, choose Silent Hill 2.
  3. Follow the developers. If the CRTV, retro presentation and story-delivery experiments are what interest you, choose Stories Untold or Observation.
  4. Prioritize endings. If you want to examine how a psychological-horror game can make several primary conclusions available on a first run while reserving one secret conclusion for a replay, compare Townfall with the original Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 using Okamoto’s specific statement.
  5. Check practical availability separately. The official material confirms Townfall on PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It does not verify the current platform, edition or store listing for every comparison title.

Playing Townfall on PS5 or PC

Konami’s confirmed launch platforms are PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game launched on September 24, 2026, so it should be treated as an available release rather than an upcoming title.

On PS5, DualSense features are relevant but optional. The developers describe haptics, adaptive triggers and motion controls, while 3D audio contributes to the sound-led tension. You can therefore choose a compatible DualSense wireless controller if you want those console features, but no source says an additional controller is required to play.

For PC, the confirmed storefront paths are Steam and the Epic Games Store. The available official material does not provide a complete PC specification list, graphics preset guide or edition comparison, so those details should be checked on the current store page before purchase.

What the sales figure does—and does not—tell you

Konami reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. It is a franchise-wide figure, not a Townfall sales number, and it should not be read as a count of paid copies sold alone. It does, however, explain why a new full-length entry has a substantial series history behind it.

How to avoid the wrong expectation

  • Do not call The Short Message a Townfall prequel. The documented connection is first-person Silent Hill representation, not shared story continuity.
  • Do not describe Stories Untold or Observation as mechanical copies of Townfall. Their recommendation rests on Screen Burn’s earlier work and its interest in narrative design and interfaces.
  • Do not use the ending comparison to claim that Silent Hill 2 and Townfall have identical gameplay. The supported comparison is the availability of three main endings on a first playthrough and a secret ending after clearing the game once.
  • Do not assume that a first-person viewpoint automatically means the same combat, puzzle or audio design. It is one axis of comparison, not a complete description.
  • Do not present DualSense features as a requirement. They are an optional PS5 enhancement.

Best starting order for different readers

If you have not played a Silent Hill game

Start with Silent Hill: The Short Message if you want a first-person introduction to the series, or Silent Hill 2 if you want the franchise’s psychological identity first. Then move to Townfall with a clear understanding that its Scottish setting, CRTV and first-person structure are its own design choices.

If you are already a Silent Hill fan

Play Townfall for its new viewpoint and its integration of evasion, limited weapons, combat and story-led puzzles. Use Silent Hill 2 as the structural comparison for endings, and The Short Message as the closest series example of first-person presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are interested in Screen Burn Interactive

Try Stories Untold and Observation as paired studio-history selections. Read them as evidence of earlier narrative and interface experiments, not as a promise that every mechanic carries forward into Townfall.

The short answer

There is no single game that is “the same as” Silent Hill Townfall. Silent Hill: The Short Message is the best match for its first-person Silent Hill angle. Silent Hill 2 is the best match for its psychological-horror lineage and the documented ending structure. Stories Untold and Observation are the best choices for understanding Screen Burn’s earlier interest in narrative form and retro interfaces. Choose among them according to the specific part of Townfall that made you curious, then verify current platform details for the comparison game you want to buy.
