If you want a PS5 game that approximates Guns of Eschaton before it arrives, start with Remnant II for deliberate, gun-focused Soulslike combat and co-op, or Hunt: Showdown 1896 for first-person gunfights in a hostile, supernatural frontier. Neither is a complete substitute: Remnant uses a third-person camera, while Hunt is an extraction shooter rather than a Soulslike.
Guns of Eschaton is scheduled for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 8, 2026. It is announced as a first-person Soulslike shooter set in an occult, apocalyptic version of the American West, so the best alternative depends on which part of that formula matters most to you.

What makes Guns of Eschaton unusual
The announced game combines several features that are normally found in separate genres. The publisher describes it as “an original Soulslike FPS set in an apocalyptic Western,” while the PlayStation Store calls it “a first-person soulslike shooter set in an apocalyptic Western.” The store also says that “Every gun has its own character.”
That combination matters when choosing something to play now. A conventional Western action game may reproduce the setting but not the careful gunplay. A conventional first-person shooter may provide the camera and weapons but not the deliberate pace, limited resources and enemy study associated with a Soulslike. A traditional Soulslike may reproduce the punishment and build planning but have no firearms at all.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
The announced feature set
- First-person perspective: the action is viewed through the character’s eyes rather than from behind them.
- Soulslike combat: fights are expected to reward timing, positioning, learning enemy behavior and accepting the consequences of mistakes.
- Gunplay with scarcity: the announcement emphasizes deliberate gunfights and scarce ammunition rather than unlimited run-and-gun shooting.
- Enemy analysis: players are expected to study weaknesses and adapt their weapons or abilities.
- Defensive timing: parries or dashes are listed among the combat tools.
- Builds and occult abilities: character customization and supernatural powers are part of the stated identity.
- Choice-driven structure: Steam lists bullet time, choices and multiple endings.
- Solo and cooperative play: Gematsu reports solo or cooperative play, although the final scope of co-op should be confirmed in the launch build.
The game remains unreleased at the time of writing. Its announced date is December 8, 2026, and advertised features can change before launch. The alternatives below are therefore comparisons with the public description, not claims about how the finished game will feel in practice.
How to choose a substitute
Use five questions rather than looking for a single “similar” label.
- Do you need first-person shooting? Hunt is the closest choice among the main comparisons. Remnant delivers gun-based combat but uses a third-person camera.
- Do you want Soulslike pressure? Remnant is the stronger fit because combat, progression and boss encounters are built around repeated learning and recovery. Hunt creates tension through its competitive extraction structure instead of Soulslike progression.
- Is the occult Western atmosphere essential? Hunt has the strongest frontier and supernatural overlap. Evil West is a more direct Western mood match, but its action design is less Soulslike.
- Will you play alone or with friends? Remnant is the safer co-op recommendation. Hunt is designed around team-based sessions as well as solo play, but its competitive format changes the experience completely.
- Do you need something playable now? The alternatives listed here are available on PS5 now, while Guns of Eschaton is scheduled for a later release.
Quick comparison of the best PS5 alternatives
| Game | Camera | Closest match | Setting fit | Solo/co-op structure | Playable on PS5 now? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remnant II | Third person | Gun-based Soulslike combat, builds and boss learning | Dark science-fantasy rather than Western | Solo and cooperative play | Yes |
| Remnant: From the Ashes | Third person | Earlier version of the same gun-focused Soulslike idea | Post-apocalyptic fantasy and science fiction | Solo and cooperative play | Yes |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | First person | Methodical firearms, frontier atmosphere and supernatural threats | Strongest Western and occult overlap | Solo or team-based competitive extraction | Yes |
| Evil West | Third person | Stylized supernatural Western action | Strong Western fit | Primarily a campaign action experience | Yes |
| Elden Ring | Third person | Build experimentation, enemy study and demanding Soulslike progression | Dark fantasy, not a Western | Solo with optional multiplayer systems | Yes |
| Lies of P | Third person | Precision, parries and structured Soulslike encounters | Occult industrial fantasy, not a Western | Primarily solo | Yes |
No game in this list reproduces all five target characteristics at once. Remnant is the closest mechanical substitute, Hunt is the closest first-person frontier substitute, and Evil West is the closest straightforward Western-action substitute.

Remnant II: the best overall mechanical alternative
Choose Remnant II if your priority is the idea of a shooter governed by Soulslike rules. Its third-person camera is the major difference, but it preserves the parts most likely to matter to players who are waiting for Guns of Eschaton: careful encounters, firearms that require deliberate use, build choices and cooperative play.
Why it matches
- Ranged combat is central: you fight primarily with guns instead of treating firearms as a minor accessory to melee.
- Encounters reward learning: enemies and bosses demand observation, positioning and repeated attempts rather than simple trigger-holding.
- Build decisions matter: equipment and abilities let you shape how your character handles damage, range and utility.
- Co-op is meaningful: it supports playing with friends while retaining a campaign-style progression loop.
Where it differs
The camera changes the feel of every fight. Third-person visibility makes it easier to read your character’s position and surrounding threats, whereas Guns of Eschaton’s announced first-person presentation should make sightlines, weapon handling and close-range reactions feel more immediate. Remnant’s worlds are dark science-fantasy environments, not an apocalyptic American West, so it cannot reproduce the target’s setting or Old West archetypes.

Who should pick it
Remnant II is the right purchase if your priority order is Soulslike pressure, gun-based combat, build experimentation and co-op. It is less suitable if the first-person viewpoint or Western atmosphere is non-negotiable.
Remnant: From the Ashes: a lower-cost route into the formula
Remnant: From the Ashes is the earlier game in the same broad gun-focused Soulslike family. It is useful for players who want to understand the mechanical appeal before deciding whether a newer alternative is worth their time.

The game centers firearms, evasive movement, dangerous encounters and repeated learning in a third-person format. Its cooperative structure makes it a practical choice for a small group that wants a demanding shooter rather than a purely competitive match.
What to expect compared with the target
As with Remnant II, the camera and setting are the main mismatches. It is not a Western, and its supernatural world follows a different visual and narrative vocabulary. It also should not be treated as evidence of how Guns of Eschaton will perform or how its announced parry, dash, bullet-time and choice systems will work; those are features advertised for the upcoming game, not a promise that the two games share implementation details.
Best use case
Choose the original Remnant when you want a proven foundation for co-op gunplay and Soulslike-style learning, and you are comfortable with an older presentation and a non-Western setting.

Hunt: Showdown 1896: the closest first-person frontier mood
Choose Hunt: Showdown 1896 if the camera, weapon tension and supernatural frontier atmosphere matter more than a conventional Soulslike progression system.
Why it feels relevant
- First-person firearms: it puts weapon handling, sightlines and sound awareness at the center of play.
- Deliberate pacing: careless movement and loud engagements can create serious danger, encouraging patience and information gathering.
- Western-era atmosphere: its frontier setting is much closer to the announced American-West inspiration than Remnant’s worlds.
- Supernatural threats: occult danger is part of the premise, giving it thematic overlap with Guns of Eschaton.
The decisive difference
Hunt is an extraction shooter with a competitive structure, not a single-player Soulslike campaign. You enter a map, gather information, confront threats and other players, and try to leave with your objective. Failure has a different meaning from losing a Soulslike fight: the pressure comes from a session-based risk loop and human opponents rather than a boss whose patterns you learn over repeated attempts.
Solo and team considerations
Hunt can be approached alone or with a team, but team play changes communication, sound management and engagement decisions. If you are specifically waiting for the reported solo-or-cooperative campaign structure of Guns of Eschaton, treat Hunt as a mood and perspective substitute, not a structural one. Its final comparison with the upcoming game will remain uncertain until the latter’s co-op details are confirmed.
Evil West: the strongest Western setting match
Evil West is the clearest choice when “occult Western” matters more than Soulslike systems. It uses a third-person camera and presents a more direct action-adventure experience, so it does not replicate Guns of Eschaton’s first-person shooting identity.
What it gets right
- A stylized frontier setting with supernatural conflict.
- A focused campaign structure rather than an extraction loop.
- Fast, cinematic combat built around weapons and special abilities.
What it does not replicate
Do not choose it expecting scarce-ammunition gunfights, Soulslike punishment or the target’s announced combination of parries, dashes, enemy-weakness study and multiple endings. It is best viewed as a setting-first alternative for players who want a supernatural Western immediately.

Elden Ring: the best non-shooter Soulslike alternative
Elden Ring is appropriate when the most important part of Guns of Eschaton is the Soulslike side: dangerous exploration, flexible builds, enemy pattern recognition and the satisfaction of overcoming difficult encounters.
Why it belongs on the list
Its third-person fantasy setting has no direct Western or firearm match, but it demonstrates the broader design principles that the upcoming game is borrowing: commitment-heavy attacks, careful resource use, experimentation with equipment and a world that rewards learning rather than rushing.
Why it may disappoint a shooter fan
Guns of Eschaton is being marketed around first-person gunplay and individually characterized weapons. Elden Ring cannot provide that handling model. Select it only if you are willing to trade firearms and frontier atmosphere for a deeper traditional Soulslike framework.

Lies of P is a strong choice for players who care most about timing, parries and deliberate one-on-one encounters. It is a solo, third-person action RPG with an entirely different setting and no gun-focused combat loop.

Its value as an alternative is concentrated in combat discipline. Attacks, defenses and enemy patterns reward practice, which can appeal to the same player who is interested in Guns of Eschaton’s stated emphasis on study and precision.

You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
Where the comparison ends
It does not offer first-person shooting, Western imagery, co-op or the target’s announced bullet-time and gun-specific identity. Consider it a training-ground substitute for Soulslike timing, not a thematic replacement.
Match the game to your priority
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gun-based Soulslike combat | Remnant II | Closest overall mechanical relationship | Third-person camera and non-Western setting |
| First-person supernatural frontier tension | Hunt: Showdown 1896 | Closest perspective and atmosphere | Competitive extraction structure instead of a Soulslike campaign |
| Supernatural Western action | Evil West | Strongest setting and tone overlap | Third-person, more conventional action design |
| Traditional Soulslike challenge | Elden Ring | Broadest build and exploration substitute | No guns and no Western setting |
| Parry-focused precision | Lies of P | Concentrated timing and enemy-reading challenge | Solo, third-person and non-shooter |
| Co-op gunplay | Remnant II | Campaign-style cooperative play with ranged combat | Not first person |
A practical “wait or play now” plan
If you want one game today
Pick Remnant II. It covers the largest number of announced mechanical ideas without pretending to reproduce the setting or camera. This is the most balanced recommendation for a PS5 owner who wants a gun-centered challenge and the option to play cooperatively.
If you are waiting specifically for first person
Pick Hunt: Showdown 1896, but approach it as a competitive frontier game. Its first-person view and supernatural Western mood are the useful overlaps; its extraction rules and player-versus-player pressure are not a preview of Guns of Eschaton’s reported campaign structure.
If the Western setting comes first
Pick Evil West. It gives you the fastest route to a supernatural Western without requiring you to wait for the December 8, 2026 launch. Accept that its combat design is not the announced first-person Soulslike formula.
If you want to practice Soulslike fundamentals
Pick Elden Ring for broad build and exploration practice, or Lies of P for a more concentrated timing and parry challenge. Neither should be purchased for guns or a Western atmosphere.
What to verify before buying Guns of Eschaton
The current public information establishes a PS5 release target and a high-level feature set, but several practical details are not yet settled in the available descriptions.
- Final co-op scope: confirm whether cooperative play covers the full campaign, selected missions or another structure.
- Performance modes: check the final PS5 presentation, resolution and frame-rate options when the launch build is documented.
- Edition and save details: verify which PS5 edition is sold and whether progression or saves behave differently between solo and co-op.
- Feature completion: bullet time, choices, multiple endings, parries, dashes and occult abilities are advertised features, but their exact implementation may change before release.
- Weapon variety: the PlayStation Store’s statement that every gun has its own character suggests meaningful weapon identity, but the final arsenal and upgrade rules have not been specified.
Until those details are confirmed, treat the alternatives as ways to sample individual ingredients: Remnant for gun-based Soulslike structure, Hunt for first-person occult frontier tension, and Evil West for the Western setting.
