For most Windows users leaving Firefox, Mullvad Browser is the strongest privacy-first choice, Brave is the easiest switch when Chrome-compatible sites and extensions matter, Vivaldi is best for tab-heavy workflows and customization, and LibreWolf suits users who want a more hardened Firefox-derived browser.
None of these browsers makes you anonymous. They reduce tracking through different combinations of anti-fingerprinting, tracker blocking, cookie controls and browser-engine choices. The right pick depends on whether privacy, compatibility, persistent logins, streaming, or productivity is your first priority.

Quick comparison
| Browser | Best fit | Privacy approach | Engine and extension ecosystem | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mullvad Browser | Maximum privacy and anti-fingerprinting with minimal setup | Tor Browser-derived fingerprinting defenses, telemetry removed, private browsing by default, built-in uBlock Origin | Firefox-based; compatible with Firefox extensions | Cookies, cache and history are cleared between sessions, so sites do not keep you signed in |
| Brave | A mainstream browser with broad site compatibility | Blocks third-party ads, cross-site trackers, third-party cookies, fingerprinting attempts, cookie-consent banners and bounce tracking; upgrades connections to HTTPS | Chromium-based; compatible with the Chromium extension ecosystem | Its privacy model and services differ from Firefox, and a private window does not make you anonymous |
| Vivaldi | Power users who need tab management and customization | Built-in ad and tracker blocking, encrypted sync and numerous privacy controls | Chromium-based; supports Chromium extensions | The large feature set creates a more complex interface, and privacy claims are primarily vendor statements |
| LibreWolf | Firefox users who want stricter defaults and a hardened Gecko browser | Telemetry-disabled defaults and additional privacy hardening | Firefox-derived; compatible with Firefox extensions | Windows update and DRM details may require more manual attention; current Windows information should be checked against LibreWolf’s official project channels |
There are no dependable, apples-to-apples figures here for speed, memory use, market share or blocking percentage. Feature behavior and privacy design are more useful decision criteria than an unsupported benchmark.

It reduces common forms of tracking
Browsers can limit third-party cookies, advertising scripts, known trackers, fingerprinting techniques and insecure connections. They can also isolate or delete local data such as cookies, cache and history. Those controls make routine web tracking harder, but they do not erase every identifying signal.

It does not make you anonymous
Privacy Guides distinguishes privacy from anonymity: Tor Browser is the option intended for anonymous browsing, while ordinary browsers remain traceable in some manner. A site can still associate activity with an account you sign into, information you submit, your IP address, or a distinctive device configuration.
A VPN is a separate layer
Mullvad Browser does not route traffic through Tor and does not include a built-in VPN. You can use it with a separately configured VPN, without one, or with another network setup. A VPN can hide your home IP address from websites and your destination traffic from the local network, but it does not by itself prevent browser fingerprinting or make an account-based session anonymous.
Customization can work against anti-fingerprinting
Anti-fingerprinting systems work by making many users look alike. Adding unusual fonts, extensions, window dimensions or browser modifications can make your configuration more distinctive. This is especially important in Mullvad Browser, whose protections work best when you leave its defaults largely intact.
Mullvad Browser: the strongest privacy-first default
Why it is the leading choice for privacy
Mullvad Browser uses the same fingerprinting-protection approach as Tor Browser while connecting directly to the internet or through a separately configured VPN rather than the Tor network. Mullvad says it removed telemetry from the browser. Privacy Guides recommends it for readers who want strong privacy protections and anti-fingerprinting out of the box.
The browser includes uBlock Origin and starts in private-browsing mode. Cookies, cache and history are cleared when the session ends. That combination limits the amount of persistent local data available to websites and advertising systems.
The convenience cost
Automatic clearing is excellent for a shared computer, sensitive research or sessions that should leave little local residue. It is inconvenient when you expect a site to remember you. Webmail, forums, shopping carts and subscription services may require a fresh sign-in after each session. If persistent logins are essential, Brave, Vivaldi or a carefully configured Firefox-derived browser may fit better.
How to keep its fingerprint protection effective
- Keep the standard window size and other defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Install only extensions you genuinely need; every additional modification can alter the browser’s observable configuration.
- Avoid treating cosmetic customization as harmless when anti-fingerprinting is your top goal.
- Use a separately configured VPN when you also want to separate websites from your normal IP address.
Who should choose it
Choose Mullvad Browser if your priority order is strong privacy first, minimal telemetry second and convenience third. It is particularly suitable for people who do not need to remain signed in everywhere and who are willing to preserve a relatively standard browser configuration.

Brave: the practical Chromium-compatible switch
Why compatibility is its advantage
Brave is built on Chromium. That generally gives it better compatibility with websites designed around Chrome APIs and with Chromium extensions than Firefox-derived alternatives. Privacy Guides recommends Brave when Chromium compatibility is a requirement.

Its built-in protections block third-party advertising and tracking technologies, third-party cookies, many fingerprinting attempts, cookie-consent banners and bounce tracking. Brave also documents automatic upgrades to HTTPS when a secure version of a connection is available.
What changes when you leave Firefox
A Chromium engine can solve compatibility problems that appear with Firefox-specific rendering or extension support, but it also means moving to a different browser platform and service model. Check each extension’s permissions and publisher before reinstalling it; an extension that existed in Firefox may have a different Chromium version or may not be available at all.
Private windows are not anonymity tools
Brave’s private windows limit local history and other session data, but they do not hide your IP address or prevent a site from recognizing an account you use. Treat private windows as a local-data feature, not as a replacement for Tor or a VPN.

Brave is the balanced recommendation for someone who wants strong built-in blocking without giving up the compatibility expected from a Chromium browser. It is also the least disruptive choice when work or school sites require Chrome-oriented behavior.
Vivaldi: the customization and tab-management specialist
What sets it apart
Vivaldi is available for Windows and documents an unusually broad productivity feature set: two-level tab stacks, tab tiling, custom tab placement, macros, built-in ad blocking, tracker protection, encrypted sync and compatibility with Chromium extensions.
Those features address a different problem from Mullvad Browser’s anti-fingerprinting focus. If your day involves dozens of research tabs, side-by-side web apps or repeatable browser actions, Vivaldi can reduce the need for separate utilities and windows.
The privacy qualification
Vivaldi describes itself as prioritizing user privacy over its own profits, and it provides controls for blocking ads and trackers. That is a vendor position rather than an independent blocking-rate measurement. The browser’s many controls also make it easier to create a configuration that differs from the majority of users, so privacy-focused users should change settings deliberately rather than treating every option as an automatic improvement.

Who should choose it
Choose Vivaldi when tab organization, tiling and interface control are more important than having the most uniform anti-fingerprinting profile. It is a strong fit for researchers, developers and anyone who wants a highly configurable Chromium workspace.
LibreWolf: a hardened Firefox-derived option
What it changes
LibreWolf is a Firefox-derived browser with stricter privacy defaults, including disabled telemetry according to the available Windows comparison. It retains the Firefox extension ecosystem and Gecko rendering, so the move is smaller for someone already comfortable with Firefox settings and add-ons.

Windows maintenance and DRM
The Windows comparison available for LibreWolf is unofficial. It indicates that DRM may be optional and that updates can require more manual control than a mainstream browser. Verify the current release process, supported Windows versions and update instructions through LibreWolf’s official project channels before relying on it for a critical workstation.
If a streaming service refuses to play protected video, check whether the required DRM component is disabled. Enabling it may improve compatibility but reduces the strictness of your chosen configuration. If the service is essential and you do not want to change the privacy profile, keep a second browser for that task.
Who should choose it
LibreWolf suits Firefox users who understand browser settings and prefer a hardened Gecko environment over a Chromium migration. It is less suitable when you need completely automatic maintenance or guaranteed streaming compatibility without troubleshooting.
How the four choices differ on the issues that matter
Anti-fingerprinting
Mullvad Browser has the clearest anti-fingerprinting emphasis because it adopts Tor Browser’s approach and aims to make users’ configurations look alike. LibreWolf applies additional Firefox hardening, but its available Windows information does not establish that it offers the same fingerprinting model. Brave and Vivaldi provide privacy controls and blocking, yet their primary documented advantages are compatibility and customization rather than a Tor-style uniform fingerprint.
Cookies, history and staying signed in
Mullvad Browser clears cookies, cache and history between sessions by default. That is a deliberate privacy feature, not a defect. Brave and Vivaldi are better choices when you need normal persistent logins. LibreWolf’s exact Windows persistence behavior depends on its current configuration, so review the browser’s own settings after installation.
Extensions
Brave and Vivaldi use the Chromium extension ecosystem. Mullvad Browser and LibreWolf use the Firefox ecosystem. Extension availability, permissions and behavior can differ between stores and browser engines; reinstall only the extensions you need and audit their access to page content, browsing history and downloads.

The available LibreWolf comparison specifically warns that DRM may need to be enabled. No equivalent DRM result is established here for the other three browsers. If protected media is a daily requirement, test your services before removing Firefox and keep a fallback browser during the transition.
Updates and maintenance
LibreWolf may demand more manual update attention on Windows. Mullvad Browser’s privacy defaults are easiest to preserve when left alone. Brave and Vivaldi are mainstream Chromium browsers with broad site compatibility, but you still need to install updates and review extension changes. Do not choose a browser solely because it has more settings; choose the maintenance burden you will actually keep up with.

Choose by your Windows use case
You want the most private default
Start with Mullvad Browser. Keep its defaults, limit extensions and accept that sessions will not retain cookies, cache or history after closing.
You need Chrome-oriented work sites or extensions
Choose Brave first. Its Chromium foundation gives you the broadest compatibility among the four options discussed here without giving up built-in tracker and ad blocking.
You manage large numbers of tabs
Choose Vivaldi if tab stacks, tiling, custom placement and macros will save you time every day. Its productivity controls are the reason to pick it, not a claim that it is universally more private than every alternative.
You want to stay close to Firefox
Try LibreWolf if you are comfortable checking updates and resolving occasional compatibility issues. It preserves the Firefox extension and Gecko experience while applying stricter defaults.
You need both privacy and maximum site compatibility
Use a two-browser arrangement rather than weakening your primary browser for one difficult site. Mullvad Browser can handle privacy-sensitive sessions, while Brave can handle Chromium-dependent work. Keep accounts and extensions separated so that the privacy-focused profile does not accumulate unnecessary identifiers.
Migration checklist for Windows
1. Inventory what Firefox currently does
- List the sites where you must stay signed in.
- Record the extensions you use and the permissions each one requires.
- Export or otherwise securely preserve bookmarks and passwords using Firefox’s built-in tools and your password manager.
- Note any site that depends on DRM, a corporate certificate, a legacy extension or a particular rendering engine.
2. Install the candidate beside Firefox
Download the Windows installer from the candidate browser’s official project page and install it without deleting Firefox. Keeping the old browser available gives you a recovery path if a work site, password import or media service fails.
3. Import selectively
Use the new browser’s import function for bookmarks, saved passwords and browsing data. Import only what you need. A clean profile makes it easier to see which extension or login creates a compatibility or privacy problem.
4. Reinstall extensions one at a time
Install the minimum set from the browser’s official extension store. After each installation, test your important sites and inspect the extension’s permissions. Do not assume that a similarly named extension is the same project across Firefox and Chromium stores.
Best Value
5. Set the Windows default browser
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Find the browser you selected and assign it to the web-link and file types you use, such as HTTP, HTTPS and HTML.
- Open links from email, documents and collaboration tools to confirm that Windows uses the intended browser.
6. Test before removing Firefox
- Sign in to your essential services.
- Play a protected video if streaming matters to you.
- Open work portals, banking sites and document editors.
- Check downloads, password filling, printing and any hardware-backed login you use.
7. Decide on a maintenance routine
Enable or accept automatic updates where the browser provides them, and check LibreWolf’s current Windows instructions manually if you choose it. Review extension updates and permissions periodically. A privacy setting that is never maintained will not protect you reliably.
Troubleshooting common problems
A site says the browser is unsupported
First test the site in Brave, whose Chromium engine is the closest match to Chrome-oriented requirements. If you prefer Mullvad Browser or LibreWolf for privacy, use the compatible browser only for that service and avoid carrying unnecessary extensions or accounts between profiles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou are repeatedly logged out
In Mullvad Browser, this is expected because cookies and related session data are cleared when the browser closes. Decide whether the privacy benefit is worth the inconvenience. If persistent sessions are required, move that activity to Brave or Vivaldi, or use a separate profile with a carefully chosen retention policy.
Streaming video does not play
Check whether the service requires DRM. LibreWolf’s available Windows comparison notes that DRM may need to be enabled. If enabling it conflicts with your privacy goals, use another browser for protected media instead of changing the profile you use for sensitive browsing.
A browser feels complicated
Vivaldi exposes more tab and interface controls than the other options, which can increase the learning curve. Start with the defaults and enable one productivity feature at a time. For a simpler setup, Brave is usually the more straightforward Chromium choice.
You are unsure whether a VPN is necessary
A VPN is useful when you want websites to see a VPN address instead of your home address or when you want to reduce exposure on an untrusted network. It is not required for Mullvad Browser, does not provide Tor anonymity and does not replace anti-fingerprinting or careful account use.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line
Pick Mullvad Browser for the strongest privacy and anti-fingerprinting defaults, Brave for the best balance of privacy and Chromium compatibility, Vivaldi for advanced tabs and customization, and LibreWolf for a hardened Firefox-style experience when you can accept more manual maintenance. Whichever you choose, keep expectations precise: a privacy browser limits tracking; it does not make an identified account or an ordinary internet connection anonymous.
