Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a home printer that handles both photographs and documents, the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 is the most balanced choice in the current guide set. Choose a refillable tank model when you print often, a dedicated A3+/A2 printer when large or fine-art work matters, and a basic cartridge all-in-one only when your photo volume is low. The right decision starts with print size, media, ink economics, and whether you need scanning—not with a headline claim that one printer is best for everyone.
Start with the print size you actually need
Print size determines the printer class, footprint, media cost, and usually the purchase price. A4 or US Letter output covers most family photographs, school projects, greeting cards, and home documents. If you regularly make portfolio sheets, larger wall prints, or professional proofs, look at A3+ or A2 machines instead. Those printers are physically larger and generally cost more to buy and operate.

| Typical need | Useful maximum size | Printer type to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshots, albums, cards, and documents | A4/Letter, including 4 × 6-inch prints | Photo-capable all-in-one or compact photo printer |
| Larger home displays and portfolio pages | A3+ | Refillable-tank A3+ model or dedicated photo printer |
| Fine-art prints and professional presentation | A3+, A2, or larger, depending on the model | Pigment-ink large-format printer |
A larger maximum size does not automatically mean better small prints. It means you are paying for a different paper path, chassis, and ink system. If almost all your work is 4 × 6 inches or Letter, an A2 printer can waste space and money.
Our current picks by reader need
| Reader need | Model | Why it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos plus everyday documents | Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 | Six-ink refillable tank all-in-one with scanning, document functions, and borderless photo printing up to 8.5 × 11 inches | Higher initial investment than a basic cartridge printer; local bottle prices and your print volume determine the payback |
| Photo-focused A4 tank printer | Canon PIXMA G620 (G650 in the UK; G660 in Australia) | Six dye inks in refillable bottles; current buying-guide coverage identifies photo output as its strength | Less versatile for office work and slower for documents |
| Larger home photographs | Epson EcoTank ET-8550 or ET-18100 | Refillable tanks with A3+ capability; the ET-8550 also handles documents | Larger footprint and higher entry cost; verify paper handling for the exact regional model |
| A3+ glossy and luster work | Canon PIXMA PRO-200S | Eight dye inks and a dedicated photo workflow | Cartridge running costs, no scanner, and less convenience than an all-in-one |
| Fine-art and larger pigment-ink prints | Epson SureColor SC-P700 or SC-P900 | Ten pigment inks aimed at large-format photo and fine-art output | Higher supply costs and slower high-quality output; compare the total cost with your expected use |
| Occasional snapshots on a budget | HP Envy Pro 6420 | Budget all-in-one with glossy photo output and document features | Cartridge expense plus the capacity and speed limitations reported in the current guide; check the local variant |
Best balanced home choice: Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500
The ET-8500 is the sensible default when one machine must print photographs, scan, copy, and handle normal documents. Its six-ink tank design avoids the frequent cartridge purchases associated with high-volume photo work. The product specification supports borderless output up to 8.5 × 11 inches, and Digital Camera World’s September 22, 2026 guide lists a 4 × 6-inch borderless color photo time of 25 seconds. That timing is a model-specific guide specification, not a universal promise: settings, paper, and workflow affect real results.

Choose it when you want strong A4/Letter photographs, need an all-in-one, and print enough to benefit from refillable ink. If you print only a handful of photos each year, the larger upfront cost may not be justified.
Best A4 photo specialist with bottles: Canon PIXMA G620 family
The G620 uses six dye inks and refillable bottles, making it attractive for photographers who care more about A4 photo output than office versatility. The same platform is sold as the G650 in the UK and G660 in Australia, so confirm the regional name before ordering supplies or downloading drivers. Its photo strength comes with a practical compromise: it is not the obvious choice for a busy document workload, and document jobs can be slower.
Best for larger home prints: Epson EcoTank ET-8550 or ET-18100
These models move beyond A4 into A3+ output while retaining refillable tanks. The ET-8550 also includes document functions, which makes it the more flexible option when photographs and paperwork share the same desk. The ET-18100 is more photo-oriented. Both need more physical room than an A4 machine, and regional versions can differ in paper handling, so check the exact specification for your country.
Best dedicated A3+ dye printer: Canon PIXMA PRO-200S
The PRO-200S is aimed at photographers who already have a scanner or multifunction device and want a printer built around A3+ photographs. Its eight dye inks suit glossy and luster media particularly well. Because it uses cartridges and has no scanner, it makes most sense as a second, photo-focused machine rather than a general home printer.
Best pigment system for fine art: Epson SureColor SC-P700 and SC-P900
The SC-P700 and SC-P900 use ten pigment inks and target large-format photographs and fine-art media. Pigment systems are the logical direction when print permanence, matte papers, and gallery-style presentation matter more than quick family snapshots. They are slower at the highest quality settings and can cost more to keep supplied. Evaluate the paper and ink budget alongside the printer price.

Budget pick for casual use: HP Envy Pro 6420
The Envy Pro 6420 is a conventional all-in-one for buyers whose photo volume is low and who also need basic scanning and document printing. It can produce glossy photographs, but cartridge costs, capacity, and speed are the limiting factors identified by the current guide. Model variants differ by region, so verify the exact product number and consumables locally.
Cartridge or tank: which is better for photographers?
Neither ink system is universally superior. Cartridge printers can be rational for occasional users because the initial printer purchase is often lower and you may not need to store bottles. Their disadvantage appears when you print frequently: replacement cartridges become a recurring cost, and a small cartridge may run out during a long photo session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Refillable tanks usually cost more at the start but reduce the cost of ink for sustained output. They are most compelling for people who print albums, proofs, school projects, or several large photographs each month. Tanks also require careful filling and correct storage. A printer that sits unused for very long periods can still need maintenance, so low-volume buyers should compare the complete ownership cost rather than assuming bottles are automatically cheaper.
Use this break-even checklist
- Estimate how many 4 × 6-inch, A4/Letter, and A3+ photographs you will make in a typical month.
- Include documents, test sheets, cleaning cycles, and failed prints in the estimate; photos are not the only ink consumers.
- Compare the printer purchase price plus a realistic year of manufacturer ink, not just the advertised printer price.
- Check the local price and availability of the exact regional bottle or cartridge SKU.
- If your output is very occasional, price a professional photo-printing service before buying a printer.
Six colours or ten: what does the number really tell you?
Ink count is a clue about the intended workflow, not a complete quality guarantee. Epson’s photography guide describes six-colour systems as suitable for most enthusiasts and ten-colour systems as aimed at professionals who need the widest possible gamut. That is manufacturer guidance rather than an independent comparative test.
Six-ink photo printers add light shades or additional colour channels to make gradients and skin tones smoother than a basic four-colour office printer. Ten-ink pigment machines extend the range of colours and are commonly paired with fine-art workflows. However, printer driver settings, paper, profiles, viewing light, and the image itself can matter as much as the raw number of inks.

Choose six inks when
- Your main output is A4/Letter or moderate A3+ photography.
- You want vivid glossy prints and reasonable document capability.
- You value a smaller, simpler system and lower operating complexity.
Choose ten inks when
- You make large prints for exhibition, portfolios, or fine-art sale.
- You use a broad range of matte, cotton, or other specialist media.
- You are prepared for higher supply costs, larger hardware, and slower best-quality modes.
Dye versus pigment ink
Dye inks dissolve into the coating of compatible photo paper and are widely used for vivid glossy photographs. They can produce strong colour and smooth gradients on the finishes most people use for albums and snapshots. The Canon PIXMA G620 family and PRO-200S are examples of photo-focused dye systems in this guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePigment inks place colour particles on or near the paper surface and are common in large-format and fine-art printers. They are a better match for photographers who prefer matte or art papers and need a professional presentation workflow. The Epson SureColor SC-P700 and SC-P900 represent that category here.
Do not select ink technology in isolation. Confirm that the printer supports the paper finish, size, and thickness you intend to use. A technically advanced pigment printer can be a poor fit if your routine is inexpensive glossy 4 × 6-inch prints.
Paper finish changes the result
Glossy paper usually gives photographs the strongest apparent colour and contrast. It is a natural choice for colourful travel scenes, family snapshots, and images intended for an album. Fingerprints and reflections are its practical drawbacks.
Matte paper suppresses reflections and is often preferred for fine-art presentation, portraits displayed under varied lighting, and images where texture matters. The surface absorbs or scatters ink differently, so a glossy profile cannot simply be reused for matte media.

Luster or semi-gloss paper sits between the two. It can reduce reflections while retaining much of glossy paper’s colour impact, making it useful for portfolios and framed photographs. Always check the printer’s supported sizes and media path before buying specialty stock, especially for A3+ models.
Colour management: the step that separates good prints from accurate prints
Colour management is a system involving the printer’s inks, paper coating, driver, and editing software. Epson’s guide recommends ICC profiles tailored to the paper; those profiles translate the colours in your image into the printer’s actual output. A profile made for one brand or finish should not be assumed to work for another.
- Choose the exact paper finish and weight you will use.
- Install the manufacturer or paper-maker ICC profile for that printer-paper combination when one is available.
- Set the same media type in the printer driver that you selected in your editing software.
- Decide which application manages colour; do not let both the application and driver apply separate corrections.
- Make a small proof before committing to a large or expensive sheet.
- View the proof under consistent, neutral lighting and adjust the image only after checking the profile and media setting.
Accurate profiles cannot rescue the wrong paper setting or an empty, blocked, or mismatched ink tank. Keep the printer, ink, paper, and software as one workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose in five practical steps
- Set the maximum print size. Decide whether A4/Letter is enough, whether you need A3+, or whether your work requires an A2-class large-format machine.
- Separate photo volume from document volume. A high photo volume favours a tank; a low volume may favour a cartridge all-in-one or an external print service.
- Pick the finish before the model. Glossy, luster, and matte media place different demands on ink and paper handling.
- Decide whether you need an all-in-one. The ET-8500 and ET-8550 combine printing with scanning and documents; the PRO-200S is a dedicated printer.
- Price the whole workflow. Add ink, paper, maintenance, storage space, and any profile or proofing needs to the purchase price.
Connectivity and convenience features worth checking
For a mixed household, a scanner and document path can be more valuable than a small difference in maximum colour gamut. Confirm the functions you actually need: scanning, copying, borderless printing at your preferred size, wireless or wired network support, and the ability to feed the paper type you use.
Dedicated photo printers often omit scanning because the intended owner already has another device. That is not a defect if your workflow is camera-to-printer, but it is an avoidable inconvenience if you regularly digitize prints or copy documents.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying an A3+ printer for an A4 workload
A3+ capacity is useful only if you will use it. Measure the available desk or stand, allow room for paper loading, and compare the larger machine’s total ink and paper cost with an A4 tank printer.
Choosing the cheapest printer and ignoring ink
A low purchase price can conceal expensive cartridges. Use your estimated annual print volume and local consumable prices to compare ownership cost.
Assuming more inks guarantee perfect colour
Ten inks cannot compensate for unsuitable paper, incorrect profiles, or poor settings. Test the actual media you plan to display.
Using office paper for photographs
Plain office paper is designed for text and absorbs photo ink differently. Use compatible photo media for photographs and select the matching driver setting.
Ordering the wrong regional model or refill
Model names and consumables can vary by country. The Canon G620 is sold as G650 in the UK and G660 in Australia; verify the regional SKU before ordering ink, paper guides, or drivers.
Leaving a photo printer idle for long periods without planning
Inkjet systems may need maintenance after extended inactivity. If you print only a few photographs a year, an external photo-printing service can be more economical and simpler.
A simple decision map
- Mostly 4 × 6-inch and Letter photos, plus documents: start with the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500.
- Mostly A4 photographs and minimal paperwork: consider the Canon PIXMA G620 family.
- Regular A3+ photographs but still need documents: consider the Epson EcoTank ET-8550.
- A3+ photographs with an existing scanner: consider the Canon PIXMA PRO-200S.
- Fine-art or large pigment prints: consider the Epson SureColor SC-P700 or SC-P900.
- Occasional snapshots and the lowest initial spend: consider the HP Envy Pro 6420, after checking cartridge costs.
- Very infrequent printing: compare a print service with owning any inkjet printer.
What to verify before you buy
- The maximum borderless size, not just the maximum paper size.
- Whether the local version supports your preferred paper thickness and rear or front feed.
- The exact ink type, colour count, and regional consumable numbers.
- Current manufacturer ink availability in your country.
- Whether scanning, copying, duplex documents, or network printing are required.
- How much desk space remains when trays are open and paper is loaded.
- Whether the printer’s colour-management workflow supports ICC profiles for your chosen paper.
Bottom line
The best photo printer depends on the job. The Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 is the strongest all-round recommendation for a home user who wants high-quality photographs and documents from one machine. Refillable A3+ models make sense for larger home output, the Canon PIXMA PRO-200S suits dedicated glossy and luster printing, and the Epson SureColor SC-P700 or SC-P900 are better aligned with fine-art and pigment workflows. Choose the printer only after fixing your size, volume, finish, and total-cost requirements.
