Here are 10 options with features documented in the available sources—not a ranking based on comparative testing. No independent study in those sources establishes which blocker is most effective.
How to choose a phone app blocker
Choose for the kind of friction you need, not for a promise that an app will make you more productive. A stricter block can make distractions harder to reach, but can also make legitimate access harder. Before installing anything, check the current app listing and privacy details in your region: availability, plan limits, permissions, and whether a strict session can be ended may change.

- Decide what to block. You may need limits for selected apps, website blocking, or a temporary lock on most of the phone.
- Match the control to your routine. Daily limits suit usage caps; recurring schedules suit work or sleep hours; pause prompts suit people who want a moment to reconsider rather than a hard block.
- Check what remains accessible. Look for an allowlist or an emergency route if you rely on essential apps or calls.
- Consider your devices. If you switch between phone and computer, verify that the specific product and plan cover each device. A company may offer separate products with different controls.
- Review permissions and privacy. Some Android blockers request Accessibility or Device Administrator access. Understand why the app requests each permission and what its privacy disclosure says before granting it.
Try the built-in phone controls first
Android: Digital Wellbeing
Google’s Digital Wellbeing guidance describes app timers and Focus mode. Google also documents setting an app limit to zero and adding an app-limits PIN. These controls can be enough if you want limits on your Android phone without installing a separate blocker; exact menus may vary by device and Android version.
iPhone: Screen Time
Apple’s Screen Time controls include app limits and Downtime, as described in this Associated Press overview. A limit is a useful baseline, but the AP notes that limits may be easy to bypass. A third-party app should not be assumed to override Apple’s platform controls.

Built-in controls: Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is a shortlist, not a tested ranking
App-store ratings, vendor descriptions, and individual anecdotes do not establish comparative effectiveness. The available sources do not provide an independent study directly comparing these named tools, so there is no evidence-based basis here to call one the most effective or the strictest. Treat feature lists as descriptions of what a product says it offers, not proof that it will reduce your screen time.

These details can change, and a product’s availability on one platform does not establish that every feature works identically across its versions.
