The Best PC Games of 2026 So Far

As of 4 October 2026, the strongest shortlist spans co-op puzzles, farming, strategy, sword combat and horror RPGs. It is a taste-led selection, not a definitive ranking: PC Gamer’s review scores reflect one publication’s judgments, while SteamDB tracks Steam user reviews. Those signals are useful in different ways—and neither establishes that every recommended title is available to play today.

How to read this shortlist

PC Gamer’s recommendations page was last updated on 15 September 2026. Its listed scores are individual PC Gamer review scores, not an aggregated critic rating. SteamDB’s 2026 ranking is a separate, changing measure of user reviews for games released on Steam in 2026; it does not represent every PC storefront or a poll of all PC players. The SteamDB snapshot checked on 4 October named Fields of Mistria, PRAGMATA and Resident Evil Requiem among its high-rated entries, but the available figures do not establish their percentages or review counts here.

PC Gamer’s reviewed recommendations

These are the clearest review-led picks on PC Gamer’s current recommendation page. Scores and review descriptions below are attributed to PC Gamer, whose page can change after this article’s 4 October 2026 cutoff.

Game PC Gamer score Best fit
Big Walk 90/100 Co-op puzzle adventure fans looking for a gentle, playful experience.
Star Wars Zero Company 90/100 Players drawn to strategy and the Star Wars setting.
Fields of Mistria 89/100 Farm-sim players who care about character writing as much as the routine.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 84/100 Players interested in an unusual sequel now available on PC, as PC Gamer describes it.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword 83/100 Action fans who want deliberate, weighty swordfighting.
The Blood of Dawnwalker 83/100 Horror-RPG players willing to trade a lighter mood for darker ideas.

For puzzles and company: Big Walk

PC Gamer gives Big Walk 90/100 and describes it as “A joyous jaunt through a gentle world full of thoughtfully-designed puzzles.” It is the clearest choice here for players who want a co-op puzzle adventure rather than combat or a long solo campaign.

For strategy in the Star Wars universe: Star Wars Zero Company

PC Gamer also scores Star Wars Zero Company 90/100, calling it “A new all-timer Star Wars game and a stunning debut for Bit Reactor.” That makes it the strategy-oriented pick in this group. The score is PC Gamer’s review, not evidence of a broader critic consensus.

For a character-led farm sim: Fields of Mistria

At 89/100, Fields of Mistria is PC Gamer’s farm-sim recommendation. Its review calls it “A fresh face for farm sims that brings the magic back with the best-written cast I’ve seen from the genre.” SteamDB also listed it among the high-rated entries in its 2026 Steam-release ranking snapshot checked on 4 October; that is a separate player-review signal, and the snapshot figures available here do not provide a percentage or review count.

For an unconventional PC sequel: Metal Gear Solid 4

PC Gamer scores Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 84/100 and describes it as “A singular sequel that must be seen to be believed, and now it’s right at home on PC.” Choose it for its singular sequel experience, rather than expecting the same kind of approachable genre hook as a farm sim or puzzle adventure.

For physical sword combat: Onimusha: Way of the Sword

PC Gamer’s 83/100 review praises “A sublime mix of classic Capcom action and weighty physical swordfighting” while noting that “The only enemy it can’t overcome is its own pacing.” That caveat matters if a slow or uneven rhythm tends to frustrate you.

For a darker RPG: The Blood of Dawnwalker

PC Gamer gives The Blood of Dawnwalker 83/100, describing it as “a resolutely miserable horror RPG with some great ideas of its own, though it doesn’t always have the courage to follow them through.” It suits a player seeking a grim tone and original ideas more than one looking for consistently successful follow-through.

SteamDB’s player-review signal

If user sentiment matters more to you than a publication’s review, consult SteamDB’s live 2026 gameratings page. The 4 October snapshot included Fields of Mistria, PRAGMATA and Resident Evil Requiem among its high-rated entries. Because the available snapshot does not establish each title’s percentage or number of reviews, it would be misleading to assign them figures or order them against PC Gamer’s scores. SteamDB’s ranking also covers 2026 Steam releases only; it is not a complete list of PC games across stores.

Check release status before choosing

A calendar entry is not proof a game has launched. PC Gamer’s 2026 release calendar and October calendar are forward-looking and can mix released games, planned dates and announcements. September coverage also named The Blood of Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall, Control Resonant and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, but the calendar references alone do not establish each title’s PC availability by 4 October.

PC Gamer’s recommendation page has a further reason to rely on individual entries rather than its year-summary claims: it lists several 2026 reviews at 90/100, then later says there are no 2026 games in its 90-and-up club. The individual scores above are attributed to their listed reviews; that internal inconsistency makes the page unsuitable as a definitive year-wide ranking.

Pick by the experience you want

  • Choose Big Walk for a gentle co-op puzzle adventure.
  • Choose Fields of Mistria for farm-sim routines and a cast PC Gamer particularly praises.
  • Choose Star Wars Zero Company for the strategy pick in PC Gamer’s reviewed recommendations.
  • Choose Onimusha: Way of the Sword for weighty sword combat, accepting PC Gamer’s pacing criticism.
  • Choose The Blood of Dawnwalker for a bleak horror RPG, not a consistently triumphant tone.
  • Use SteamDB to check current Steam-user sentiment, and confirm a title’s live PC-store availability before treating it as playable now.
