Cyberpunk 2077 is the closest modern-city substitute for GTA 6, while Red Dead Redemption 2 offers the deepest slow-burn immersion. Choose Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic swordplay, Horizon Forbidden West for spectacular science-fiction wilderness, or Forza Horizon 6 if driving and rendering technology matter more than crime-story role-playing.
Xbox currently lists GTA VI as “Available November 19, 2026.” That date and the platform listing can change, so check the current Xbox page before publication or purchase. Rockstar’s official description places the game in Leonida, including Vice City; the five games below cover the strongest visual and open-world alternatives while you wait.

How to choose while waiting for GTA 6
There is no single “GTA-like” substitute here because GTA VI’s appeal combines a contemporary city, vehicles, crime-adjacent storytelling, character drama and a major studio’s environmental detail. The shortlist separates those ingredients instead of pretending that every game offers the same loop.
Choose the closest setting
Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if your mental picture is a living modern metropolis full of traffic, vertical streets, neon, vehicles and optional stories. Night City is futuristic rather than coastal Florida, but it is the only option in this group built around a dense contemporary-feeling city.

Choose the strongest world simulation
Pick Red Dead Redemption 2 when small environmental details matter more than matching GTA’s era. Wildlife, weather, travel and the pace of moving through the frontier create a world that rewards observation. Its deliberate tempo is a feature, not a flaw, if you want a long cinematic experience.
Choose a different kind of visual spectacle
Ghost of Tsushima provides film-like composition and readable sword fighting in a historical setting. Horizon Forbidden West shifts the focus to colorful science-fiction vistas, machines and traversal. Both meet the high-end graphics brief without imitating urban crime games.
Choose driving above everything else
Forza Horizon 6 is the specialist answer for players who primarily want beautiful roads, varied scenery and the technical spectacle of modern rendering. It is not a character-led crime narrative, so buy or install it for driving rather than expecting a replacement for GTA’s story structure.
Cyberpunk 2077: the closest modern-city alternative
Why it fits the GTA waiting list
Cyberpunk 2077 puts you in Night City, a dense urban environment with a contemporary visual language, vehicles, crime-adjacent missions and a large supply of side content. Its structure is an action RPG: your build, equipment and chosen abilities shape how encounters unfold. That makes it a better match for readers who want to roam a city and discover optional stories than for readers seeking a linear action game.
The resemblance stops at the city-and-vehicle level. Night City is a science-fiction megacity rather than Leonida, and the role-playing systems ask you to manage a character build instead of simply improving a fixed protagonist. Expect dialogue choices, skill planning and combat approaches that can change from one playthrough to another.
Visual character and pace
Its visual identity comes from dense signage, colored lighting, layered streets and dramatic contrasts between corporate districts and poorer neighborhoods. The city can feel busy even when you are not following a main mission because side activities and encounters are distributed through the urban space. The result is a strong fit for “open-world games with amazing graphics” when the reader imagines a modern city rather than a natural landscape.
The pace is flexible. Main missions can deliver cinematic set pieces, while side content lets you slow down and explore. Players who dislike inventory screens, skill trees or build decisions should know that this is a role-playing game first; the city is the setting for those systems, not a substitute for them.

Edition and platform check
PlayStation’s official open-world guide lists Cyberpunk 2077 for PS5. For a physical-product search, the relevant name is Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (PS5). Edition contents, stock and regional listings change, so confirm the current store page, included expansions and your console’s compatibility before buying. The same check applies to digital storefronts: the edition name alone does not establish current price or availability.
- Best match: modern streets, vehicles, optional stories and urban atmosphere.
- Trade-off: futuristic role-playing systems and a darker tone instead of a contemporary coastal setting.
- Buy it when: you want the nearest city-based substitute and enjoy experimenting with builds.
Red Dead Redemption 2: the slow-burn immersion choice
Why Rockstar’s western matters here
Red Dead Redemption 2 is useful as a comparison point for Rockstar’s approach to world-building, even though its western setting and slower rhythm differ sharply from GTA VI. The frontier is not designed as a fast urban sandbox. Its strength is the accumulation of small details: wildlife behavior, changing scenery, travel routines and spaces that feel inhabited when you stop moving.
That deliberate pace asks for patience. Journeys can take time, missions often build toward cinematic payoffs and the world invites you to observe rather than rush from icon to icon. If your priority is a world that feels coherent outside the main plot, this is the most convincing choice in the group.
Visual detail and exploration
The visual appeal comes from natural variation rather than neon density. Forests, plains, settlements and weather create different moods as you travel. Wildlife and environmental detail make exploration meaningful even when no mission marker is nearby. The game’s western atmosphere is a direct contrast to the contemporary city you may be waiting for, but that contrast is why it works as a companion rather than a clone.

Do not choose it solely because it comes from the same studio as GTA. Players who want constant traffic, rapid vehicle changes or a compact urban map may find the travel time and measured storytelling too slow. It is the right recommendation when immersion, character-led drama and environmental observation rank above modern vehicles and urban density.
- Best match: wildlife, travel, environmental storytelling and a cinematic western.
- Trade-off: slower movement and a historical setting with no modern-city loop.
- Buy it when: you want a patient, detail-heavy world and can give its story room to build.
Ghost of Tsushima: cinematic swordplay in a readable open world
What makes it visually distinctive
PlayStation includes Ghost of Tsushima among its open-world recommendations. Its landscapes are composed for clarity: strong color fields, visible paths and film-like framing make it easy to understand where you are going while preserving a dramatic sense of place. The historical setting gives you a visual change of pace from both Night City and the western frontier.
Combat and story focus
The core activity is a focused samurai story built around sword combat. Fights emphasize readable timing and positioning rather than a character-build system or vehicle handling. That focus makes the game approachable if you want cinematic action without managing a large inventory or a wide range of firearms.

- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
Exploration supports the story rather than trying to simulate a modern city. You move through natural and rural environments, discover locations and follow a clear character arc. The world is open, but its purpose is to frame a disciplined melee adventure, not to reproduce GTA’s free-form urban mischief.
Best reason to pick it
Choose Ghost of Tsushima when “high-end graphics” means strong art direction and cinematic readability as much as technical density. It is especially suitable for players who want a complete historical adventure before returning to a modern sandbox.
- Best match: samurai drama, sword combat and film-like landscapes.
- Trade-off: no contemporary city, driving system or crime-story structure.
- Buy it when: you prefer a focused melee loop and a clearly directed protagonist.
Horizon Forbidden West: science-fiction vistas and machine encounters
World and premise
PlayStation describes Aloy’s journey into the Forbidden West as an exploration of a far-future Earth threatened by machines and other dangers. The setting delivers a broad visual range: colorful landscapes, remnants of an earlier civilization and machine habitats that make traversal feel like part of the adventure rather than a commute between missions.
Why it satisfies the graphics brief
Horizon Forbidden West is the strongest choice here for readers who want spectacle in natural spaces. Its appeal is not urban realism; it is the contrast between vast scenery and highly designed mechanical creatures. The world gives you reasons to climb, cross difficult terrain and look for routes through places that would be ordinary wilderness in another game.
Combat and exploration loop
Combat centers on ranged attacks and encounters with machines and other dangers. Planning your approach, identifying threats and using the environment are more important than driving. Traversal and discovery share equal billing with story missions, so the game suits players who want a large science-fiction wilderness rather than a compact city.
Because the setting is so different from GTA VI’s Leonida, use Horizon as a graphics-and-exploration recommendation, not as a direct genre substitute. It answers the question “what should I play for beautiful open-world scenery?” better than “what feels like living in Vice City?”
- Best match: colorful vistas, climbing and ranged combat against machines.
- Trade-off: science-fiction wilderness instead of traffic, nightlife and urban crime.
- Buy it when: traversal and visual variety matter more than driving or role-playing in a city.
Forza Horizon 6: the driving-first showcase
When driving is the real priority
Forza Horizon 6 belongs on this list for a specific reason: it is the specialist choice for beautiful driving through a large, varied landscape. If your favorite GTA moments involve finding a car, learning roads and crossing the map at speed, this is the most direct way to make driving the center of the experience.

Its structure is fundamentally different from a character-led crime story. Vehicle choice, handling and the pleasure of covering distance provide the motivation. You should not expect the same mission drama, dialogue density or pedestrian-world interaction as an urban action RPG.
High-end PC rendering
NVIDIA reports that GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPUs can pair 4K max settings and ray tracing with DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation in Forza Horizon 6. Treat that as a conditional hardware-and-settings example, not a universal performance promise. Your results depend on the exact GPU, processor, display, resolution, frame-generation setting, driver and in-game options.

To evaluate the claim on your own PC, first confirm that you have a compatible GeForce RTX 50-series desktop card. Then check that the game exposes the required ray-tracing, DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation options. Select 4K and maximum quality only after confirming temperatures, frame pacing and image quality; a lower preset with stable performance can be preferable to a nominally higher setting that stutters.
Who should choose it
Pick Forza Horizon 6 when the words “high-end graphics” primarily mean detailed cars, long sightlines, lighting effects and a satisfying driving model. Choose one of the other four games if you need a protagonist, branching missions or a city that remains interesting on foot.
- Best match: driving, road discovery and a graphics-focused showcase.
- Trade-off: little overlap with crime storytelling, character drama or melee and ranged combat.
- Buy it when: cars and rendering technology are more important than narrative simulation.
Comparison by the five decisions that matter
Setting and atmosphere
Cyberpunk 2077 is the only dense modern city. Red Dead Redemption 2 uses a western frontier, Ghost of Tsushima a historical Japanese landscape and Horizon Forbidden West a far-future Earth. Forza Horizon 6 prioritizes varied roads and scenery over a character-centered world. Decide whether you want urban similarity or a deliberate change of setting before comparing graphics.
Visual presentation and technical features
All five pursue visual spectacle differently. Cyberpunk emphasizes illuminated architecture and urban density; Red Dead Redemption 2 emphasizes natural detail and environmental life; Ghost of Tsushima emphasizes composition and color; Horizon emphasizes machines against expansive scenery; Forza emphasizes vehicles, roads and rendering options. The NVIDIA feature combination is specifically conditional on compatible PC hardware and settings, while platform-specific visual modes should be checked in the current store listing.
Pace and story density
Cyberpunk balances main missions with abundant side content and build decisions. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the slowest and most deliberate. Ghost of Tsushima offers a focused cinematic story. Horizon mixes a broad adventure with exploration and machine encounters. Forza is the least story-driven and the most activity-focused.

Combat or driving focus
Cyberpunk uses action-RPG combat and vehicles; Red Dead Redemption 2 combines travel, gunplay and environmental interaction; Ghost of Tsushima centers on swords; Horizon centers on ranged combat and machines; Forza centers on driving. This distinction is more useful than a generic “open world” label because it predicts what you will do minute to minute.
Platform and edition availability
Availability changes by country, console generation, storefront and edition. PlayStation’s official guide lists Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5, Ghost of Tsushima among its open-world recommendations and Horizon Forbidden West as Aloy’s adventure. For every title, verify the current listing for your hardware and region. For Cyberpunk, confirm whether the listing is the standard release or Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (PS5); for Forza on PC, verify the hardware and feature requirements before relying on a performance claim.
Recommendations by player type
If you want a city that feels alive
Start with Cyberpunk 2077. Its urban density, vehicles and optional stories address the largest overlap with what readers usually mean by “games like GTA 6.” Accept that the setting is futuristic and that role-playing systems shape progression.

- Identify your primary activity. Write down whether you want city exploration, slow environmental immersion, sword combat, machine hunting or driving. Use that answer to select the game before looking at graphics modes.
- Confirm the platform. Open the current store listing for your country and check the exact console or PC version. Do not assume that an edition listed for one generation includes another.
- Check the edition name. For Cyberpunk on PS5, distinguish the standard release from Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition (PS5). Read the included-content line rather than relying on a product image.
- Check hardware for PC features. For the Forza Horizon 6 configuration described by NVIDIA, verify a compatible GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPU and the availability of ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation in your settings menu.
- Choose the right visual target. Use 4K and maximum settings only when your system maintains stable frame pacing. A consistent lower setting is preferable to unstable performance, especially in driving games where camera movement is constant.
- Recheck volatile information. GTA VI’s Xbox date is currently November 19, 2026, but dates, platform listings, stock and editions can change. Revisit the official listing immediately before publication or purchase.
Bottom line
For the closest overall substitute, play Cyberpunk 2077. For the richest slow-burn world, choose Red Dead Redemption 2. Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West are better when you want cinematic historical action or science-fiction exploration, and Forza Horizon 6 wins when driving and high-end rendering are the entire point. None reproduces every part of GTA VI, but each covers a different reason players are waiting for Leonida and Vice City.
