There is no single best open-source screenshot app for every developer. Choose ShareX on Windows when you want capture, recording, OCR, automation and upload workflows in one program. Choose Flameshot for cross-platform capture with fast in-place markup and a command-line interface. Choose ksnip when you want a cross-platform screenshot and annotation tool and are willing to add its separate OCR plugin. Linux users should decide between X11 and Wayland before installing: both Flameshot and ksnip document Wayland limitations.
Quick recommendations by platform and workflow

ShareX: the broadest Windows developer workflow
ShareX describes itself as a free, open-source Windows screenshot tool that combines screen capture, screen recording, file sharing and productivity features. It is the strongest starting point when your work moves from taking a picture to processing and delivering it.
Capture modes
- Full-screen, region, active-window and monitor capture.
- Scrolling capture for long documents or pages.
- Screen recording in the same application.
Editing, redaction and OCR
Its listed editing tools include arrows, step markers, blur, pixelation, highlighting, cropping and redaction-oriented controls. Text recognition (OCR) is also listed, which is useful when a screenshot is a source for bug reports, test data or documentation rather than merely an image.

Automation and sharing
ShareX lists custom uploaders, workflow automation, and actions that run after capture or after upload. That lets a developer define a repeatable path—for example, capture, annotate, recognize text and then send the result to a chosen destination—without treating each screenshot as a separate manual task.
Upload support is a capability, not a recommendation to upload sensitive material. Review the destination, retention and access settings before sending source code, customer information or credentials. ShareX’s homepage displays “More than 33 million downloads worldwide,” but gives no reporting year or methodology, so that figure is not a comparable adoption statistic.
Flameshot: direct annotation with scripting across platforms
Flameshot is a free, open-source, cross-platform screenshot tool focused on selecting an area and editing it immediately. Its built-in editor includes arrows, highlights, blur or pixelation, text, freehand drawing, shapes, counters and solid-color boxes.
Why developers choose it
- Markup happens in the capture flow, which suits issue reports and code-review comments.
- The command-line interface supports scripting and key bindings, so it can be connected to developer shortcuts or scripts.
- The project documents Imgur upload among its overview features when an online destination is appropriate.
Flameshot’s main code is GPLv3. Its download page lists Windows, macOS and Linux builds. On Linux, many packages are maintained by distributions; the project-maintained AUR package is an exception. Package versions and integration can therefore vary by distribution.

Wayland status
The official overview calls GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support experimental. If your desktop runs Wayland, check the current release notes and test your compositor rather than assuming the X11 behavior will carry over. On X11, the project presents a more conventional capture workflow; on Wayland, compositor permissions and portal behavior can affect global capture actions.

ksnip: cross-platform capture and annotation with optional OCR
ksnip calls itself a cross-platform screenshot and annotation tool. Its repository lists Linux packages in RPM, DEB, APT, Snap, Flatpak and AppImage forms, a zipped Windows executable and a macOS application distributed in a DMG.
Annotation workflow
ksnip centers on taking a screenshot and marking it up. That makes it a good fit when you need a focused image editor rather than ShareX’s larger capture-and-upload automation surface.
OCR is a plugin, not a built-in assumption
OCR is available through a separate plugin that uses Tesseract. Plan for that additional installation and configuration; installing ksnip alone does not provide the same OCR path that ShareX lists directly.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWayland limitations to verify
The project’s known-issues documentation lists several Wayland constraints: global hotkeys may be unavailable where compositor support is missing, and it records GNOME Wayland screenshot and clipboard limitations, KDE Plasma screenshot issues and HiDPI positioning problems. These are environment- and version-sensitive. Record your desktop environment, compositor session and ksnip version when diagnosing a failure, then check the current issue list.
ksnip identifies its license as GPL-3.0. Its README also asks developers and testers across Linux, Windows and macOS to help, so do not infer uniform maturity across all platform combinations.

How to choose: a developer decision framework
1. Start with operating system and session
- Windows: Start with ShareX if you need recording, OCR, upload destinations or multi-step automation. Consider Flameshot or ksnip for a smaller capture-and-annotation workflow.
- macOS: Flameshot and ksnip publish builds. ShareX is not presented by its official site as a macOS application.
- Linux X11: All three candidates can be considered according to workflow, with package availability depending on distribution.
- Linux Wayland: Compare your GNOME or Plasma session against the documented limitations before standardizing on hotkeys, clipboard behavior or HiDPI positioning.
2. Match the capture job
| Need | Most direct fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Scrolling or multi-monitor capture on Windows | ShareX | Its listed capture modes include scrolling, monitor and active-window capture. |
| Draw, blur or pixelate while selecting an area | Flameshot | Those editing controls are built into its capture editor. |
| Cross-platform annotation with optional OCR | ksnip | It supports the workflow across platforms; OCR is supplied by its separate Tesseract plugin. |
| Screen recording integrated with screenshots | ShareX | Recording is part of its stated feature set. |
| Scripted capture or key bindings | Flameshot | Its command-line interface supports scripting and key bindings. |
3. Decide whether the image should leave your machine
Local saving is the safer default for credentials, private source code and customer data. ShareX lists custom uploaders and Flameshot lists Imgur upload, while ksnip’s documented focus is capture and annotation. Treat every upload destination as a separate security decision.
Redaction and annotation practices that prevent leaks
- Capture only the needed region. Region or active-window capture reduces accidental exposure.
- Redact before uploading. Use blur, pixelation or solid-color boxes for tokens, email addresses and customer identifiers. Do not rely on cropping alone if the original file remains accessible.
- Inspect the final image at 100 percent. Small text can remain readable after scaling, and a missed browser tab or notification can disclose context.
- Keep a local copy when the screenshot is evidence. Upload links and retention policies can change; preserve the original according to your team’s policy.
Linux troubleshooting: X11, Wayland and packaging
Global hotkey does nothing
On Wayland, compositor support may prevent an application from registering global hotkeys. Try the desktop’s screenshot portal or an explicitly configured shortcut, and verify whether your session is GNOME Wayland, Plasma Wayland or X11.
Screenshot or clipboard is empty
ksnip documents GNOME Wayland screenshot and clipboard limitations, while Flameshot labels GNOME and Plasma Wayland support experimental. Test a current package, reproduce with a small region and check the project’s current issue tracker before changing desktop settings.
Annotation is offset on a HiDPI display
ksnip lists HiDPI positioning problems under Wayland. Confirm display scaling, compositor session and application version, then try the distribution package or another session to isolate whether the offset is environment-specific.
Package behavior differs from documentation
Linux distributions maintain most Flameshot packages, so release timing and build options can differ. Compare the package version with the project’s current release information and report the distribution, package source and session when asking for help.

When an open-source desktop app is not the right tool
These applications are designed for an interactive desktop. If your pipeline needs repeatable website captures in CI, scheduled jobs, an API response or an AI agent, a browserless screenshot service can remove the need to maintain a graphical session. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request, removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the API with an access key; the target URL below can be replaced with your own.

ScreenshotNeo reports X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Features include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, device presets, PDF controls, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, caching with a chosen TTL and a usage API.
Every plan includes every feature: Free provides 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Are these applications truly open source?
The project materials identify Flameshot as GPLv3 and ksnip as GPL-3.0; ShareX describes itself as free and open source. Check each repository or release package for the license text that applies to the version you install.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these tools in a commercial development team?
The cited project materials describe open-source licensing, but your organization should review the exact license and any third-party components in the version it deploys.
Should I upload screenshots containing source code?
Only after checking the destination, retention and access controls. Local saving avoids sending the image to a third party.
The Bottom Line
Pick by workflow: ShareX for Windows feature breadth, Flameshot for cross-platform annotation and scripting, and ksnip for cross-platform annotation with plugin-based OCR. On Linux, your Wayland compositor and session behavior are as important as the app’s feature list.
