The best open-source Android launcher alternatives for minimal, gesture-based, and power-user setups

Short answer: choose OLauncher for the strictest text-and-search minimalism, KISS Launcher when you want minimalism plus extensive gestures and power-user tools, and Lawnchair for a familiar Android grid with widgets, folders, icon packs, gestures, and Material You. Kvaesitso is a strong F-Droid search-first option, while Pie Launcher and µLauncher are aimed at people who want gesture interaction itself to define the home screen.

All six approaches solve the same problem differently: reducing the time and visual noise between unlocking your phone and reaching an app, contact, shortcut, or search result. The right choice depends less on a popularity ranking than on whether you prefer a grid, a text list, a vertical search drawer, or a gesture wheel.

Quick recommendations

  • Strict minimalism: OLauncher removes most home-screen decoration and relies on text search. It supports swipe-left, swipe-right, and double-tap gestures, but the cited comparison lists no widgets, folders, tags, or icon packs.
  • Minimalism with power-user controls: KISS Launcher adds app, contact, and call-history search, configurable swipes, long press and double tap, tags, widgets, work profiles, pinned shortcuts, and icon packs.
  • Conventional Android power-user setup: Lawnchair keeps the familiar grid model while adding broad search, folders, widgets, icon packs, Material You, and several customizable gestures.
  • F-Droid-first, search-focused use: Kvaesitso combines open-source distribution through F-Droid with a search/vertical-drawer approach, widgets, Material You, and comparison-table coverage for landscape, foldables, and tablets.
  • Gesture experimentation: Pie Launcher uses a selection wheel rather than a conventional grid, and µLauncher is categorized as gesture- and search-based.
  • Search-heavy feature set: TinyBit Launcher searches apps, contacts, the web, maps, the Play Store, and YouTube, while also offering history, gestures, tags, widgets, and icon packs.
  • Text-button simplicity: YAM Launcher uses a simple text-button home screen with app search, optional contact search, left/right gestures, Material You, work-profile support, and pinned shortcuts.

Start with the interaction model

A launcher changes the surface you use every time you unlock Android. Before comparing licenses or cosmetic options, decide how you want to locate things.

Grid launchers

A grid places icons, folders, widgets, and empty space on a conventional home screen. It is the easiest transition for someone accustomed to the stock Android launcher. Lawnchair is the broadest match in this group: its cited feature set includes folders, widgets, icon packs, Material You, and customizable double-tap, swipe-up, swipe-down, home-button, and back-button gestures.

Search-first launchers

Search-first launchers replace most icon browsing with typing or selecting from a list. OLauncher is the most stripped-down example in the comparison. KISS keeps the same fast search principle but extends it to contacts and call history and adds tags, shortcuts, work profiles, and widgets. Kvaesitso uses a search/vertical-drawer model, while TinyBit adds web, maps, Play Store, and YouTube searches to its app and contact search.

Gesture-driven launchers

Gesture-first designs make swipes, taps, or a radial selector the main navigation mechanism. OLauncher and KISS provide direct gesture controls without abandoning search. Pie Launcher is more distinctive: its selection wheel is the central interaction, so it is worth trying only if a radial menu feels more natural than a list or grid. µLauncher is also listed as a gesture/search launcher, although the opened comparison does not enumerate its full feature set.

Text-button layouts

YAM Launcher sits between a text list and a traditional home screen. Its cited design uses text buttons, with optional contact search, left/right gestures, Material You, work-profile support, and pinned shortcuts. It omits the visual customization expected from a grid launcher.

Feature comparison

Launcher Best fit Interaction model Notable cited capabilities Main trade-off
OLauncher Strict minimalism Search/text App search; swipe left/right; double tap; app renaming No widgets, folders, tags, or icon packs in the cited matrix
KISS Launcher Minimal plus power-user control Search plus gestures App, contact, and call-history search; search history; configurable gestures; tags; widgets; work profile; pinned shortcuts; icon packs Less visually conventional than a grid launcher
Lawnchair Power users wanting stock-like Android Grid plus search Search across apps and shortcuts, web suggestions, people, files, Android settings, and calculator; gesture customization; folders; widgets; icon packs; Material You More complex than text-only launchers
Kvaesitso Search-first F-Droid users Search/vertical drawer Open source; F-Droid availability; widgets; Material You; comparison-table coverage for landscape, foldables, and tablets Confirm current device and version compatibility
Pie Launcher Gesture experimentation Selection wheel MIT license; app search; wheel-based selection; pinned shortcuts; work profile Unusual interaction model and limited conventional launcher features
µLauncher Gesture and search users Gestures and search Listed as a gesture/search launcher and available from F-Droid The opened comparison does not fully enumerate its features
TinyBit Launcher Search-heavy power users Search plus gestures App, contact, web, maps, Play Store, and YouTube search; history; many gestures; tags; widgets; icon packs More feature-heavy than a strict minimalist setup
YAM Launcher Simple text-button layout Search plus home-screen text buttons MIT license; app and optional contact search; left/right gestures; Material You; work profile; pinned shortcuts No widgets, folders, tags, or icon packs in the cited matrix

OLauncher: the cleanest text-based setup

OLauncher is the clearest choice when the goal is to remove visual clutter rather than redesign it. The launcher is listed as GPL-3.0 and centers the experience on app search. Swipe-left, swipe-right, and double-tap gestures provide quick actions without requiring a row of permanent icons.

This simplicity is deliberate. The cited comparison lists no widgets, folders, tags, or icon packs. If your home screen normally contains a calendar, weather panel, several folders, and themed icons, OLauncher will feel restrictive. If you want the phone to show little more than text and respond quickly to a search or gesture, those omissions are the point.

KISS Launcher: search-first control without giving up flexibility

KISS Launcher is the strongest compromise between a minimal interface and a power-user toolkit. It is GPL-3.0 and searches apps, contacts, and call history. Search history helps you repeat common actions, while tags let you create your own classification instead of relying only on folders.

Its cited gesture set is substantially richer than OLauncher’s: configurable swipes, long press, and double tap can be assigned to actions. KISS also supports widgets, work profiles, pinned shortcuts, and icon packs. That combination lets you begin with a text-based screen and add only the controls you actually use.

The trade-off is familiarity. KISS is less visually conventional than a grid launcher, so people who navigate by icon position may need an adjustment period. It is better suited to users who remember names, tags, or gestures than to users who depend on fixed visual locations.

Lawnchair: a stock-like open-source power-user home screen

Lawnchair is the broadest option for readers who want open-source software without abandoning the standard Android home-screen metaphor. Its cited matrix lists Apache License 2.0 and a search system that can cover apps and shortcuts, web suggestions, people, files, Android settings, and calculator functions.

Customization is equally conventional: folders, widgets, icon packs, and Material You are supported. You can also customize double-tap, swipe-up, swipe-down, home-button, and back-button gestures. This makes Lawnchair a practical choice when you want a familiar grid but still expect automation-like shortcuts and deep navigation controls.

That breadth is its main compromise. A grid with widgets, folders, icon packs, and multiple gesture assignments has more settings to understand than a text-only launcher. Choose it when flexibility matters more than eliminating every visual element.

Kvaesitso: a search-focused F-Droid option

Kvaesitso is listed by F-Droid as a free and open-source launcher. The comparison table also marks it as open source, F-Droid available, widget-supporting, and Material You capable, with fields covering landscape, foldable, and tablet use.

Its search/vertical-drawer model makes it a natural candidate for people who want search-first navigation but still need widgets or adaptive layouts. Because device and build behavior can change, verify the current F-Droid package and test the functions you need on your phone, especially if you use a foldable, tablet, or landscape-oriented setup.

Pie Launcher and µLauncher: when gestures are the feature

Pie Launcher

Pie Launcher uses a gesture-driven selection wheel rather than a conventional icon grid. The comparison lists an MIT license, app search, pinned shortcuts, and work-profile support. The wheel can be efficient once learned, but it is a different spatial model from both Android’s default grid and a text list.

Choose Pie when experimenting with navigation is itself the objective. It is less suitable if you need a familiar folder-and-widget desktop or want every launcher feature to behave like stock Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

µLauncher

µLauncher is categorized as a gesture- and search-based launcher and is available from F-Droid. The opened comparison does not enumerate its complete feature list, so treat it as a candidate to install and evaluate rather than assuming that it includes a particular widget, shortcut, or customization feature.

TinyBit Launcher and YAM Launcher: two lighter alternatives

TinyBit Launcher

TinyBit is aimed at users who want one search surface for many kinds of destinations. In addition to apps and contacts, its cited capabilities include web, maps, Play Store, and YouTube search. It also provides search history, many gestures, tags, widgets, and icon packs.

That breadth makes TinyBit more capable than a strict minimalist launcher. It is a better fit when reducing app switching matters more than reducing the number of available features.

YAM Launcher

YAM uses a simple text-button layout and is listed with an MIT license. It supports app search and optional contact search, left/right gestures, Material You, work profiles, and pinned shortcuts. The cited matrix lists no widgets, folders, tags, or icon packs, so it stays closer to a deliberately simple text interface than to a customizable grid.

How to install and switch safely

F-Droid’s launcher directory includes many open-source projects, including Victoria Launcher, Fokus Launcher, OLauncher, Kvaesitso, and other minimal, search, and gesture launchers. The directory changes over time, so check the current package, version, and device requirements before installing.

  1. Install the launcher from its current F-Droid package or the project’s documented distribution channel.
  2. Open it once and grant only the permissions it actually requests. Contact, call-history, work-profile, or search integrations may require additional access; review each prompt rather than accepting everything automatically.
  3. Set it as the default home app through Android’s Settings app. The exact label varies by Android version, but it is normally under Apps, Default apps, and Home app.
  4. Keep your previous launcher installed until you have confirmed that app search, gestures, widgets, work-profile access, and any shortcuts you depend on work correctly.
  5. If navigation becomes confusing, return to the same Home app setting and select the previous launcher. This gives you a recovery path while you tune the new layout.

What to verify before committing

The comparison records project-level fields such as update frequency, supported Android version, privacy, QuickSwitch, and foldable/tablet support. Some of those fields are marked unknown or untested. They are useful screening criteria, not guarantees for a particular phone.

  • Android version: confirm that the current build supports your device’s Android release.
  • Distribution: check whether the package is currently available through F-Droid and whether the repository build is maintained.
  • Gestures: test every gesture you plan to use, including conflicts with system navigation, edge swipes, the home button, or the back button.
  • Widgets and shortcuts: add the specific widgets and pinned shortcuts you need; a launcher may support widgets generally but behave differently with individual providers.
  • Work profile: if you use a managed profile, verify that both personal and work apps appear and that profile shortcuts launch correctly.
  • Large screens: test portrait and landscape on tablets or foldables rather than relying only on the comparison-table field.
  • Updates: review the project’s repository or F-Droid listing periodically. Open-source status and maintenance can change.

A practical decision framework

Pick OLauncher if visual restraint is non-negotiable

Use OLauncher when you want text search, a few gestures, and no temptation to spend time arranging a desktop. Its lack of widgets and icon packs is a feature for a distraction-resistant setup.

Pick KISS if you want the smallest interface that still scales

KISS is the better choice when your setup must grow to include tags, widgets, work apps, pinned shortcuts, or richer gesture mappings without returning to a crowded grid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Lawnchair if muscle memory matters

Lawnchair preserves the grid, folder, and widget conventions many Android users already know. It is the safest fit when open-source software is important but a stock-like home screen is still the priority.

Pick Kvaesitso if F-Droid and search are central

Kvaesitso suits users who prefer F-Droid distribution and a vertical, search-led interface while retaining widgets and Material You. Verify the current build on your hardware first.

Pick Pie or µLauncher if you want to rethink navigation

Pie is the most distinctive option because the selection wheel is its defining control. µLauncher belongs in the same experimental category, but its complete feature coverage should be checked in the current release.

Pick TinyBit or YAM for narrower preferences

TinyBit is for broad, multi-destination search with substantial customization. YAM is for a simpler text-button screen with a smaller set of controls.

Common pitfalls

Assuming “open source” means identical privacy behavior

Source availability does not tell you which Android permissions a particular build requests or how optional integrations behave. Inspect the current package and permissions on your device, especially for contacts, call history, web suggestions, or work profiles.

Choosing by feature count alone

A launcher with widgets, icon packs, tags, and many gesture assignments can take longer to configure and may undermine a minimal goal. Start with the interaction model, then add only capabilities that solve a real problem.

Ignoring system navigation conflicts

Edge swipes, back gestures, home-button actions, and launcher-defined swipes can overlap. Test the combinations you use most before removing your previous launcher or rebuilding your home screen.

Trusting an old compatibility label

F-Droid listings and comparison fields describe a point in time. Recheck the current build, Android version support, and large-screen behavior before treating a launcher as a permanent choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

There is no single best open-source Android launcher for every setup. OLauncher is the strict-minimal text/search choice; KISS is the most capable search-first option; Lawnchair is the strongest stock-like grid; Kvaesitso is a compelling F-Droid search alternative; and Pie Launcher or µLauncher make sense when gesture navigation itself is the reason to switch. TinyBit and YAM fill narrower needs for broad search and text-button simplicity, respectively.
