Quick answer: which project should you choose?
| Project | Best fit | Typical deployment | Standout capability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open WebUI | A flexible interface for local models and compatible providers | Self-hosted web application | Extensible model, tool and collaboration interface |
| Jan | Someone who wants a private, local desktop app | Desktop application, with a local API server | Simple local experience and OpenAI-compatible API at localhost:1337 |
| LibreChat | Households, developers and teams using several model providers | Self-hosted web application | Provider aggregation, administration, agents and integrations |
| AnythingLLM | Private document workspaces and local agents | Desktop, self-hosted server or multi-user deployment | Document chat, knowledge bases and agent workflows |
| Khoj | A persistent personal research and knowledge system | Self-hosted or local, with several client options | Semantic search, custom agents and scheduled automations |
None has been established as universally “smartest.” The projects do not publish a common benchmark for answer quality, speed or total cost. Your results will depend on the model you connect, the computer or server running it, the quality of your documents and the configuration of retrieval and hosting.

A hosted assistant normally keeps the conversation, uploaded files and model requests inside a provider’s service. An open-source alternative lets you run some or all of that stack yourself. The interface may run on your laptop, a home server or a rented server; the language model may run locally or be reached through an external provider.

“Open-source” therefore does not automatically mean that every request is local or that no data leaves your network. A self-hosted interface can still send prompts to a hosted model if you configure one. Conversely, a local desktop application can keep chats and documents on-device while using a model downloaded to that computer. Check the selected model endpoint, search connector and telemetry settings rather than relying on the label alone.
The main decisions
- Where data lives: local-only, your own server, or a mixture of local and hosted services.
- Which models are available: one local runtime, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or many commercial providers in one interface.
- How personal knowledge works: simple file uploads, a managed document workspace, or a searchable long-term knowledge base.
- Whether you need automation: tools, MCP connections, agents, scheduled jobs and notifications add power but also add setup and security work.
- Who uses it: a single person has different requirements from a household or an organization needing accounts, isolation and moderation.
Open WebUI: the adaptable self-hosted front end
Open WebUI is a self-hosted web interface that can connect local models and external providers. It is aimed at individuals and teams that want one place to use different model back ends instead of opening a separate application for each one.
Why it stands out
Its central advantage is flexibility. You can put an Ollama-based local model, another OpenAI-compatible endpoint and other connected services behind one browser interface. That makes it useful when you want to change models without changing the way you chat, organize conversations or expose access to other users.
Product updates listed for October 2026 include real-time voice calls, animated avatars, multi-factor sign-in, model controls, groups, shared chats and version history. This project changes quickly, so treat those capabilities as version-dependent and confirm that the feature is present in the release you install.
Who should use it
- People comfortable running a web service and configuring model endpoints.
- Users who want a single interface over Ollama and other compatible back ends.
- Small teams that may later need shared conversations, groups or stronger sign-in controls.
Trade-offs
Open WebUI gives you room to grow, but that room comes with administration. You must maintain the application, protect its login, update connected components and understand which requests go to local versus external providers. It is less immediately appliance-like than a desktop installer.

Jan: the easiest local-first desktop option
Jan describes itself as a personal intelligence application built around local data ownership, with no API bills for local use and a web-search capability. Its documentation says the project is working toward an open-source alternative to ChatGPT and Claude that anyone can own and run.
What makes Jan different
Jan starts with the desktop rather than a server dashboard. That makes it a natural first choice for a non-developer who wants to download an application, select a local model and begin chatting without assembling a separate web stack.
Jan also exposes an OpenAI-compatible API at localhost:1337. Other programs can call that local endpoint, allowing the desktop app to serve as a model provider for compatible tools and scripts while the model remains on your computer.
Best use cases
- Private everyday chat on one computer.
- People who want to avoid recurring hosted-model API charges when local models are sufficient.
- Developers who need a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint for experiments or integrations.
Limitations to understand
A desktop-first workflow is not the same as a multi-user server. If several people need separate accounts, centralized administration or shared workspaces, a web platform such as LibreChat or Open WebUI is a better starting point. Local performance also depends heavily on your computer and the model you choose; no single speed or quality figure applies to every setup.
LibreChat: the broadest multi-provider and team platform
LibreChat is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted web application that brings multiple model providers into one interface. Its documentation covers Docker, npm, Helm, remote hosting, custom endpoints, MCP, agents, code interpreter and artifacts. The project also lists SSO, SAML, LDAP, two-factor authentication, rate limiting and moderation controls.

Why choose LibreChat
If you use several providers, LibreChat can keep them behind one account and one conversation interface. Custom endpoints make it possible to add compatible services, including models running on infrastructure you control. MCP, agents, code execution and artifacts extend the product beyond ordinary chat, although each extra capability needs careful permissions and maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
The project page reported 45.7k GitHub stars, 9.4k forks and 419 contributors when accessed in 2026. Those figures indicate project activity, not a guarantee of reliability, response quality or support for a particular deployment.
Who benefits most
- Households that want one web application for several providers.
- Developers who need custom endpoints, APIs or tool integrations.
- Teams that require identity integration, rate limiting or moderation rather than a single-user desktop chat.
What setup involves
LibreChat is more of a service to operate than an app to install once. Choose a deployment method supported by its documentation, configure provider credentials or local endpoints, create user access controls and secure the server before exposing it beyond your private network. Docker is a practical route for many self-hosters; npm and Helm are available when they fit your environment better.
AnythingLLM: the document and agent workspace
AnythingLLM is an open-source, MIT-licensed application focused on chatting with documents and using agents locally or offline. Its official product material describes support for PDFs, Word documents, CSV files and codebases, along with custom local models and enterprise providers.
Its strongest feature is a private knowledge workspace
Instead of treating every conversation as a blank page, AnythingLLM organizes information around documents and workspaces. You can bring in a collection of files, ask questions about that material and use retrieval to ground responses in the supplied content. This is useful for project documentation, internal procedures, research notes and code repositories.

The product also describes on-device document knowledge, web search, background jobs, custom agent skills and a local meeting assistant. Those features make it more than a file-upload chat window, but they also mean you should review what an agent is allowed to access before enabling it.
Deployment choices
AnythingLLM offers desktop, self-hosted, multi-user, API and customization options. A desktop installation is suitable for one person who wants local operation. A server deployment is more appropriate when several people need access or when documents should remain on a central machine. The choice of model provider still determines whether prompts and retrieved text leave that machine.
The product site reported more than 67k GitHub stars, more than 200 contributors and more than 5 million Docker pulls when accessed in 2026. These are project-adoption figures, not a comparative test of retrieval accuracy.
Choose it when
- Your main question is “Can this assistant answer from my files?”
- You want local or offline operation with the option of connecting other providers.
- You need agents and background work in addition to conversational answers.
Khoj: a persistent personal second brain
Khoj presents itself as “Your AI second brain.” Its repository describes an open-source, self-hostable assistant that chats with local or online models, answers from personal documents and the web, creates custom agents, schedules newsletters and notifications, and provides semantic search.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where Khoj goes beyond ordinary chat
Khoj is designed for information that accumulates over time. You can search a personal document collection semantically rather than relying only on exact keywords, then ask questions that combine your stored material with web research. Custom agents let you define recurring roles, while scheduled newsletters and notifications turn the assistant into an automated information service.
Best Value
Access is available through a browser, Obsidian, Emacs, desktop, phone or WhatsApp. That breadth matters if your notes already live in a particular tool or if you want the same knowledge system away from your main computer.
Best fit and cautions
Choose Khoj when persistent personal knowledge, research and recurring automation matter more than a minimal chat interface. Because it can reach documents, the web and scheduled jobs, treat account security, connector permissions and notification destinations as first-class configuration decisions. The project does not publish a common benchmark that would let you predict answer quality independently of your model and corpus.

How to choose without guessing
Choose by privacy boundary
If “nothing leaves this computer” is the requirement, start with Jan or a local deployment of AnythingLLM, then use only a local model and disable external search and provider connectors. If you can operate your own server but want browser access from several devices, Open WebUI, LibreChat or Khoj are more suitable. If you are comfortable with a mixed setup, any of the five can combine local and hosted services where supported.

- General chat over one or more models: Open WebUI.
- Simple local desktop chat: Jan.
- Several providers, accounts and administration: LibreChat.
- Private files, workspaces and local agents: AnythingLLM.
- Long-lived notes, semantic search and recurring research: Khoj.
Choose by technical comfort
A desktop installer generally has fewer moving parts than a server. Jan is the clearest low-administration starting point. AnythingLLM also offers a desktop path while retaining server options. Open WebUI, LibreChat and Khoj reward users who are willing to manage a service, storage, updates, authentication and backups.
A practical setup plan for any self-hosted assistant
- Define the privacy boundary. Write down whether chats, uploaded files, web searches and model requests must remain local. Treat each connector separately.
- Pick the deployment shape. Use a desktop application for one primary user; use a self-hosted web service for multiple devices or users.
- Select the model endpoint. Confirm whether it is local, OpenAI-compatible or a hosted provider. Record which data the endpoint receives.
- Start with a small test corpus. Add a few representative documents rather than importing everything. Check whether answers cite or accurately reflect the source material.
- Set authentication before remote access. Use strong credentials and, where available, two-factor or multi-factor sign-in. Do not expose an unprotected service directly to the internet.
- Limit tools and agents. Enable only the connectors, code execution, web search and scheduled jobs you actually need. Give agents the least access that permits the task.
- Back up application data and documents. A self-hosted assistant is your responsibility; an update, disk failure or configuration mistake should not erase your knowledge base.
- Test failure modes. Disconnect the model endpoint, submit an unsupported file, revoke a connector and verify that the system fails safely instead of silently sending data elsewhere.
What these projects cannot promise
Self-hosting does not guarantee correct answers. A local model can hallucinate, misunderstand a document or return an incomplete result just as a hosted model can. Retrieval quality depends on file parsing, chunking, indexing and the questions you ask. Web search adds freshness but also adds another data and trust boundary.
There is also no universal cost comparison. Software may be free to use, while the hardware, electricity, storage, server hosting, model API requests and maintenance are not. A small local model on existing hardware may be inexpensive but less capable; a larger hosted model may be stronger while sending prompts outside your environment. Decide which trade-off is acceptable for each workload.
Bottom line
For the broadest self-hosted interface, start with Open WebUI. For the least complicated local desktop experience, start with Jan. Choose LibreChat when provider choice and administration matter, AnythingLLM when documents and agents are the center of the job, and Khoj when you want an enduring personal knowledge system with semantic search and scheduled research. Whichever you choose, verify the actual model endpoint and data path: that is what determines whether the assistant is genuinely private.
