Choose Ocarina Unlocked if you want Ocarina of Time to feel familiar while removing much of its fixed dungeon order. Choose Indigo itself if what you want is a much larger replacement adventure with new items, enemies, bosses, maps and story. Those are different goals, so there is no honest, source-supported ranking that declares one the universal “best” hack after Indigo.
This guide compares the two documented directions, explains Indigo’s current status and hardware requirements, and shows how to decide what to play next without confusing a ROM hack with a separate Ocarina of Time port.

Quick answer: which hack should you play after Indigo?
- Pick Ocarina Unlocked for the clearest change of pace. Its stated goal is to remove one-off item gates and let you complete dungeons outside their intended order while keeping the overworld, puzzles and player guidance as close as possible to the familiar game.
- Keep following Indigo if you are looking for a replacement game rather than a remix. Hylian Modding describes Indigo as an in-progress full-game replacement with new items, enemies, bosses, maps and story, set 27 years after the events of Majora’s Mask.
- Do not treat the two projects as equivalent releases. Ocarina Unlocked documents a progression redesign. Indigo documents a much broader conversion and is still described as in progress, so a playable chapter or demo should not be treated as proof that the entire project is complete.
The available project documentation supports these conditional recommendations, not a measured ranking of every Ocarina of Time hack. A good choice depends on whether you value a recognizable campaign with more freedom or a substantially new adventure.
Why “best” depends on the kind of change you want
“What is your favorite Ocarina of Time ROM hack?” is really several questions. Some players want the original game’s atmosphere, controls and puzzle language with fewer progression restrictions. Others want new areas and encounters, even if that means accepting an unfinished project, technical compromises or a different balance of exploration and combat.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Two useful axes make the decision clearer:
- Scale of change: Ocarina Unlocked presents itself as a comparatively minimal progression remix. Indigo’s stated aim is to replace the game with a new adventure.
- Release certainty: Indigo’s project description and release notes identify an in-progress project with chapter or demo releases. That is materially different from recommending a finished, self-contained campaign. The documentation available for Ocarina Unlocked establishes its design goal, but does not provide a basis for ranking its overall quality against other hacks.
There is no verified player poll or review dataset here that can settle which hack is objectively best. The most defensible recommendation is therefore preference-based: choose the project whose design promise matches the experience you want.
Indigo: the larger, in-progress replacement adventure
What Indigo is trying to be
Hylian Modding describes Indigo as an Ocarina of Time modification intended as a full game replacement. Its documented scope includes new items, enemies, bosses, maps and story content. The project page places the story 27 years after the events of Majora’s Mask, giving it a setting separate from a straightforward retelling of the original Ocarina of Time campaign.
That scope matters when deciding what to play next. Indigo is not simply a randomizer, a cosmetic overhaul or a small sequence break. Its stated design target is a new game built on Ocarina of Time’s technology and format. Expect the project’s identity to come from its original content rather than from preserving every familiar route.
Read “in progress” literally
The project is still described as in progress. Release notes include playable chapter or demo builds, but those releases do not establish that the full replacement is finished. Before downloading, check the current release page for the exact build, included chapter and installation instructions. A later build may change what is playable, how it is patched or which emulator settings are recommended.
This distinction prevents a common disappointment: starting a demo while expecting a complete, beginning-to-end campaign. Indigo can be the right choice for someone who enjoys seeing a large project develop, but a player seeking a finished story should verify the specific release rather than infer completion from screenshots or a chapter announcement.
Indigo’s documented ROM and emulator requirements
Indigo’s GitHub release notes specify a patch for a US 1.0 .z64 ROM. That is a precise base requirement, not a suggestion to try any Ocarina of Time dump. A different region, revision or file format may fail to patch or boot correctly.
The same notes list these suggested ways to run the patched result:

| Option | What the release notes document |
|---|---|
| Project64 | Version 3.0.1 is listed as a suggested emulator. |
| Dolphin | Listed as a suggested emulator. |
| Ares | Listed as a suggested emulator. |
| Nintendo 64 hardware | Play is possible with an N64 EverDrive-compatible flashcart, according to the release notes. |
Use the project’s current release instructions for the actual patching procedure. The documented information establishes the required ROM base and supported targets, but it does not establish that every emulator version, graphics plug-in or hardware configuration will behave identically.
Performance trade-offs on original N64 hardware
Indigo’s developers say performance was sacrificed for richer vistas and encounters on Wii Virtual Console and emulators. The release notes also say that N64 EverDrive play is possible while warning about lag and texture z-fighting. “Playable on N64” therefore does not mean “equivalent to emulator performance.”
On hardware, expect the possibility of slower scenes and visual conflicts where surfaces appear to flicker or overlap. If stable frame pacing and consistent rendering matter more to you than using an original console, an emulator listed by the project is the safer starting point. If authentic hardware is the priority, treat the EverDrive option as a compatibility path with known compromises, not as the reference experience.
Ocarina Unlocked: the familiar game with a freer route
What the hack changes
The Ocarina Unlocked repository describes a focused progression redesign. It removes one-off item-based gates and allows dungeons to be completed outside the intended order. Its stated goal is to make that freedom available with minimal changes to the overworld, dungeon puzzles and the direction given to the player.
That combination is why it is the strongest documented follow-up recommendation for someone coming from Indigo who wants less disruption. You retain the recognizable world and puzzle structure while gaining more choice about when to tackle major areas. The project is not presented as a new story, a replacement map set or a collection of new bosses; its defining feature is the way progression is opened up.
Who should choose it
- Choose Ocarina Unlocked if you know the original game well and want a different route through familiar content.
- Choose it if Indigo’s scale is intimidating. A progression remix is easier to understand than a full replacement whose content and completion status are still evolving.
- Choose it if you value continuity. The project explicitly aims to minimize changes to the overworld, puzzles and player direction.
- Do not choose it expecting a new campaign. The documented design goal is freer ordering, not a wholesale replacement of Ocarina of Time.
The repository’s description supports those expectations. It does not, by itself, prove a comparative quality score or establish that Ocarina Unlocked is the best hack for every player.
Indigo versus Ocarina Unlocked
| Project | Documented design goal | Main changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indigo | In-progress full-game replacement | New items, enemies, bosses, maps and story; story set 27 years after Majora’s Mask | Players seeking a substantially new adventure and willing to verify the current chapter or build |
| Ocarina Unlocked | Minimal-change progression remix | Removes one-off item gates and permits dungeons outside the intended order while aiming to preserve the familiar overworld, puzzles and guidance | Players who want the original structure to remain recognizable with more route freedom |
The table is a design comparison, not a quality ranking. Neither project’s cited documentation supplies a standardized completion score, review average or head-to-head benchmark.

How to decide what to play next
Step 1: Decide whether you want new content or new order
Ask which statement sounds more appealing:
- “I want new places, enemies, bosses and story.” That points toward Indigo.
- “I want to revisit the original game but choose a less rigid dungeon route.” That points toward Ocarina Unlocked.
This is the most important decision because the projects solve different problems. A progression remix cannot provide the volume of original content promised by a replacement project, while a replacement project cannot guarantee the same familiar path or finished scope as the original game.

For Indigo, open the current project release page and confirm whether the download is a chapter, demo or broader build. Read the release notes for changes to the patch base and emulator guidance. Do not assume that a video or an older guide describes the current release.
For Ocarina Unlocked, start with the repository’s own installation information and compatibility notes. The available description establishes its progression goal but does not provide a universal emulator or hardware matrix, so use the instructions attached to the build you download.
Step 3: Match the setup to your equipment
If you already use an emulator, Indigo’s notes identify Project64 3.0.1, Dolphin and Ares as suggested options. If you want original-console play, the notes say an N64 EverDrive can run Indigo but warn about lag and texture z-fighting. That warning should affect your choice before you spend time preparing a flashcart.
Step 4: Keep expectations separate from the original game
Indigo’s replacement scope means that familiar Ocarina of Time knowledge may not predict its item logic, encounter design or route. Ocarina Unlocked, by contrast, is specifically designed around recognizable content and a changed progression structure. Treat each as its own design experiment rather than judging one by how closely it reproduces the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIndigo setup checklist
The following checklist stays within the requirements identified by the project’s release notes and avoids assuming a particular patch utility:
- Confirm the base image. Use a US 1.0
.z64Ocarina of Time ROM that matches the release requirement. Keep your original, unmodified dump separate. - Read the current release notes. Verify which Indigo chapter or build you are installing and whether the notes add or change instructions.
- Apply the supplied patch exactly as documented. Use the patching method named by the project release. Do not substitute a different region, revision or file type because it happens to have the same filename.
- Launch on a documented target. Project64 3.0.1, Dolphin and Ares are named in the release notes. Start with the project’s recommended settings for the build you downloaded.
- Test before beginning a long session. Confirm that the title screen, opening area and save behavior work before investing in progress. If the build fails to boot, recheck the ROM revision and patch steps first.
- Use an EverDrive only with the stated caveat. Indigo’s notes say N64 play is possible, but lag and texture z-fighting may occur. Do not use emulator performance as a guarantee for original hardware.
These steps do not replace the project’s own release instructions. They identify the checks most likely to prevent a mismatched-ROM or wrong-build problem.

Do not confuse Ship of Harkinian with an Indigo launcher
Ship of Harkinian is a separate Ocarina of Time port, not an Indigo patch and not a required step for trying ROM hacks. Its official FAQ says that users must own a legal copy of the game and dump the ROM with other software. The FAQ lists NTSC and PAL versions from Nintendo 64 cartridges and GameCube discs as supported sources.
That information is relevant to legal and technical preparation, but it does not establish that Ship of Harkinian loads Indigo or other ROM hacks. Keep the projects conceptually separate:

- ROM-hack route: start with the base ROM and patch instructions specified by the hack, such as Indigo’s US 1.0
.z64requirement. - Port route: follow Ship of Harkinian’s own supported-version and legal-copy requirements.
Installing the port should not be presented as a general-purpose ROM-hack launcher, because the cited FAQ does not make that claim.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling Indigo complete because a demo is playable
A playable chapter demonstrates that a build can run; it does not demonstrate that the planned replacement adventure is finished. Check the release label and scope every time you download an update.
Using the wrong ROM revision
Indigo’s patch target is specifically a US 1.0 .z64 image. Region and revision differences can make a patch fail or produce an unusable result. Verify the base before troubleshooting the emulator.
Expecting original-N64 performance
The developers explicitly warn of lag and texture z-fighting on N64 EverDrive play. Hardware compatibility is therefore a qualified option, not proof of parity with emulation.
Assuming a familiar overworld means familiar progression
Ocarina Unlocked’s purpose is to remove one-off item gates and permit dungeons in a different order. The world may look recognizable while the route logic changes. Plan for more choice, not for the original sequence to remain mandatory.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Using a port as an unverified hack loader
Ship of Harkinian has its own supported ROM sources and legal-copy instructions. The available FAQ does not say that it supports Indigo, so do not select it on that assumption.
Recommendations by player type
For a first-time ROM-hack player
Ocarina Unlocked is the more conservative starting point of the two documented choices. Its stated goal explains the change in one sentence: fewer one-off gates and more freedom over dungeon order, with minimal disruption elsewhere. That makes it easier to predict what kind of experience you are installing.
For an experienced Ocarina of Time player
Choose Ocarina Unlocked if your enjoyment comes from planning routes through known spaces. Choose Indigo if your priority is discovery and you are comfortable with a project whose full scope remains in development.

Indigo is the documented match. Its project description explicitly promises new items, enemies, bosses, maps and story rather than only a changed order of existing dungeons. Verify the playable chapter and accept the possibility that the complete replacement is not yet available.
For an original-hardware enthusiast
Indigo’s release notes provide a documented EverDrive path, but the lag and texture z-fighting warning should be treated as part of the decision. If your priority is smooth, predictable rendering, begin with one of the listed emulator options instead.
What can responsibly be called “the best” here?
Based on the documented goals, Ocarina Unlocked is the best next choice for a player who wants familiar Ocarina of Time with a more open dungeon order. Indigo is the better fit for a player seeking a large replacement adventure and accepting an in-progress release.
That is a useful verdict, but it is not a claim that either project wins a universal popularity contest. The available primary documentation does not establish a reliable ranking across the wider Ocarina of Time hack catalog, nor does it provide comparative testing or a representative player consensus. Treat recommendations beyond these documented differences as personal preference, and verify current builds before installing.
