Use Tasks for Markdown checkbox items, add Tasks Kanban when those same tasks need a visual board, choose native Bases for property-based views, and use Dataview for query-driven tables, lists, and task reports. QuickAdd handles fast capture and chained actions, while Templater generates dynamic notes with calculations or code. These tools complement one another, but installing overlapping plugins before choosing a data model creates unnecessary maintenance.
The practical decision is simple: does a board card represent an existing checkbox, a whole note, or a separate line stored only on the board? The answer determines which plugin will remain reliable as your vault grows.

Choose by data model before choosing a plugin
Obsidian can hold tasks, notes, and metadata in the same vault, but each plugin expects that information in a different shape. A task dashboard built from checkbox lines behaves differently from a project database built from properties. Automation tools add another layer: they create or transform content rather than query it.
| Option | Data model | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bases | File properties | Native, property-based views | Less oriented to advanced scripted query workflows |
| Dataview | Frontmatter and inline fields | Custom tables, lists, and task queries | Requires consistent metadata; JavaScript modes need care |
| Tasks | Markdown checkbox lines | Due dates, recurrence, filtering, and vault-wide task queries | Tasks must use its supported Markdown format |
| Tasks Kanban | Existing Tasks items | Visual status board over current task lines | Requires Tasks and changes source-task status when cards move |
| QuickAdd | Capture choices and macros | Fast entry, note creation, and chained actions | Workflows require configuration; its CLI is desktop-only |
| Templater | Templates plus code | Dynamic generation and computation | Arbitrary code and system commands require trusted sources |
If your notes already contain ordinary Markdown checkboxes, Tasks is the least disruptive foundation. If your projects are described with fields such as status, owner, or review date, Bases or Dataview is a better starting point. QuickAdd and Templater do not replace either model; they make entering and generating that data faster.

Tasks: the best starting point for vault-wide checklists
Tasks is a community plugin for finding and managing checkbox tasks across notes. It is designed for people who want one view of work scattered through daily notes, project pages, meeting notes, or reference files without relocating those tasks into a separate database.
What Tasks does
- Searches task lines throughout the vault.
- Filters by properties such as due dates, recurrence, completion state, and done dates.
- Supports recurring tasks and due-date workflows documented by its maintainers.
- Writes a status change back to the original Markdown file when you toggle a task.
That last behavior is important. A result is not a detached copy: completing an item in a Tasks view updates the checkbox in its source note. This keeps the daily note, project page, and dashboard synchronized.
When Tasks is the right choice
Choose Tasks when the underlying record should remain a Markdown checkbox. It is the direct answer to questions such as “What is due today across my vault?” or “Which recurring tasks are incomplete?” It is less suitable when each card is a whole note or when your information exists only as frontmatter fields without task lines.

Initial setup
- In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins → Browse.
- Find Tasks, install it, and enable it.
- Review the plugin’s global filter setting. Set one early if you want every query to share a consistent scope.
- Check the status-toggle command and assign a hotkey only after confirming that the command matches your preferred workflow.
- Create a small test query and toggle one item. Verify that the source note changes before building a large dashboard.
Keep task syntax consistent. A mixture of unsupported checkbox formats, manually typed dates, and inconsistent status markers will produce incomplete results even when the query itself is correct.
Tasks Kanban: a board over the tasks you already have
Tasks Kanban adds columns, lanes, sorting, filtering, saved boards, custom columns, and drag-and-drop to the Tasks model. It does not create an isolated duplicate of each card. The cards represent real Tasks items wherever those checkboxes already live.
How write-back works
Moving a card changes the task status in its source note. This is useful when a board is only a different view of existing work: a task moved from “Next” to “Doing” remains the same checkbox in the project or daily note. It also means a drag operation is an edit to your vault, not merely a visual rearrangement.

Requirements and compatibility
Tasks Kanban requires the Tasks plugin. Install and enable both plugins before creating a board. The Obsidian Community directory snapshot accessed October 13, 2026 lists Tasks Kanban version 0.11.0, compatible with Obsidian 1.12.7 or newer, on desktop and mobile. Compatibility and update information can change after that snapshot.
Use it when a task board is genuinely needed
- Use it for status columns over existing checkbox tasks.
- Use grouping lanes when work needs to be separated by project, person, or another supported grouping.
- Use filtering and sorting to create focused views without changing the underlying notes.
If each card should represent a complete note, or if the board itself should own every card as a standalone line, use a note-based Kanban approach instead. Tasks Kanban is specifically strongest when the source of truth is already a Tasks checkbox.
Bases: try Obsidian’s native property views first
Bases is a core Obsidian plugin for custom views that edit, sort, and filter files using properties. Core plugins are included in Obsidian and officially supported by the Obsidian team, although some are disabled until you turn them on in settings.
Why Bases is a sensible first dashboard
Bases avoids adding a community dependency for straightforward property organization. If your notes already have fields such as status, priority, project, or next_review, a Bases view can present and edit those properties without requiring a query language.
Where Bases stops being the best fit
Bases is less oriented toward advanced scripted queries. If you need complex expressions, several output formats, or a dashboard assembled from task lines and inline fields, Dataview offers more control. Start with Bases when native editing and simple filtering matter more than code-driven flexibility.
Dataview: query-driven dashboards for structured metadata
Dataview treats your vault as a queryable database. It reads YAML frontmatter and inline fields, then renders tables, lists, and task results. It supports a pipeline-style query language, inline expressions, DataviewJS, and inline JavaScript.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
What Dataview can display
- Project tables with fields such as status, owner, deadline, or priority.
- Lists of notes matching a folder, tag, or metadata condition.
- Task results assembled from notes across the vault.
- Inline calculations and custom views for readers comfortable with its query syntax.
The cost of that flexibility is metadata discipline. A dashboard cannot infer a reliable status if one note uses status: active, another uses state: doing, and a third has no field at all. Define a small field vocabulary first, then apply it consistently to new notes and important existing notes.
Dataview version and maintenance context
The directory snapshot accessed October 13, 2026 lists Dataview version 0.5.68 with desktop and mobile support. The listing also indicates that its last update was two years before that snapshot. That maintenance recency does not automatically make it unusable, but it is a reason to test compatibility with your current Obsidian release and to avoid assuming that every newer feature is supported.
Safe use of JavaScript modes
Ordinary Dataview queries are more constrained than JavaScript query modes. DataviewJS can operate with plugin-level access and may rewrite or create files, delete files, or make network requests. Use scripts you wrote yourself or code from a source you trust and understand. Test destructive operations on a copy of a vault before connecting them to a dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

QuickAdd is built for reducing the friction between an idea and the note where it belongs. Its choices can create notes from templates, append captured text to an existing note, or run macros that combine commands, scripts, and other choices.
Useful QuickAdd workflows
- Append a timestamped thought to a daily note.
- Create a project note from a template and place it in the correct folder.
- Run several actions in sequence, such as creating a note, inserting a value, and opening the result.
- Trigger a workflow from an Obsidian command, hotkey, or URI link.
QuickAdd works on desktop and mobile. Its CLI is desktop-only, so do not design a mobile-dependent workflow around command-line triggers.
Version and compatibility snapshot
The Obsidian Community directory snapshot accessed October 13, 2026 lists QuickAdd version 2.32.1 and compatibility with Obsidian 1.13.0 or newer. Compatibility can change as Obsidian and the plugin evolve.

Build a first capture choice
- Install and enable QuickAdd from Settings → Community plugins → Browse.
- Create a capture choice that targets your daily note and inserts a timestamped entry.
- Run it manually and confirm the destination file and insertion location.
- Assign a hotkey only after the manual test writes exactly where expected.
- Add macros or URI triggers after the single capture step is dependable.
Start with one predictable write operation. A large macro is harder to diagnose when a path, template, or command is wrong.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTemplater: dynamic note generation with code
Templater inserts variables and function results into notes and can execute JavaScript or system commands. It is the better choice when a static template is not enough—for example, when a note needs conditional sections, computed values, or content generated from context at creation time.
Templater’s strengths
- Generates notes with dynamic values rather than fixed placeholders.
- Supports conditional and computed content.
- Can run JavaScript for advanced generation.
- Can invoke system commands where the environment and permissions allow it.
The directory snapshot accessed October 13, 2026 lists Templater version 2.26.0, compatible with Obsidian 1.13.0 or newer, on desktop and mobile.
Security boundary
Templater’s power is also its principal risk. Run only JavaScript and system commands that you understand and trust. A template copied from an unknown source can perform actions beyond inserting text. Keep code small, inspect it before enabling it, and test in a non-critical vault when possible.
Three practical plugin combinations
1. Markdown task system
Use Tasks as the foundation and Tasks Kanban as an optional visual layer. Keep the checkbox in the note that gives it context, then use Tasks queries for dates and recurrence. Add a Kanban board only for workflows where moving between statuses is useful. This combination avoids duplicate task records because both views operate on the same source lines.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Property-based project dashboard
Start with Bases if you want a built-in view that edits, sorts, and filters file properties. Move to Dataview when you need custom tables, lists, expressions, or mixed task results. Whichever route you choose, establish field names and allowed values before creating many notes.
Best Value
3. Capture-to-dashboard workflow
Use QuickAdd to capture an idea, meeting action, or timestamped entry into the right note. Use Templater when the destination note needs computed or conditional content. Use Tasks or Dataview afterward to report on what was captured. Capture tools create reliable inputs; dashboard tools present them.
Installation and rollout checklist
- Decide whether your source of truth is checkbox lines, file properties, or generated notes.
- Install only the plugin that directly matches that model.
- Test one record from creation through display and, where applicable, write-back.
- Document folder names, field names, status values, and date conventions.
- Add hotkeys, macros, boards, or scripts only after the basic path works.
- Review mobile and desktop differences before depending on a workflow away from your main computer.
- Back up your vault before enabling code that can rewrite or delete files.
Troubleshooting common failures
A task is missing from a Tasks view
Check that it is written as a supported Markdown checkbox and that the query’s filters do not exclude its file, tag, status, or date. Compare it with a task that does appear. Inconsistent syntax is usually more likely than a dashboard rendering problem.
A Kanban move changed the wrong thing
Remember that the card is linked to a source task. Open the original note and inspect the status line after moving the card. If you wanted independent cards rather than source-task updates, Tasks Kanban is the wrong data model for that board.
A Dataview table is empty
Inspect the frontmatter or inline fields in one note and compare field names and value types across several notes. A query can be syntactically valid while returning nothing because the metadata is inconsistent or absent.
A QuickAdd capture lands in the wrong file
Run the choice manually, verify the target path and insertion marker, and postpone the hotkey or URI trigger until the destination is correct. Check mobile behavior separately if the workflow will be used on both platforms.
A template or script behaves dangerously
Disable the template or query, review every command and file operation, and remove code you cannot explain. Treat DataviewJS and Templater scripts as executable software, not harmless formatting snippets.
How to choose without over-installing
Install Tasks when your work is already expressed as checkboxes. Add Tasks Kanban only when a visual status board improves that same workflow. Choose Bases for a native property view, or Dataview when query flexibility justifies maintaining metadata and code. Choose QuickAdd for capture and repeatable action chains; choose Templater for dynamic generation that needs computation or scripting.
This progression keeps each plugin responsible for one job: storage model, view, capture, or generation. It also makes failures easier to diagnose because you know whether the problem is a task format, a property, a query, or an automation step.
