There is no evidence-backed nine-product shortlist here: current cited coverage supports four headphone and earbud models, plus an airplane audio adapter. Rather than pad the list, this guide compares those options and explains what to check before you fly.
What matters most on a flight
ANC helps with engine rumble, not every cabin sound
Active noise cancellation is most useful against the low, steady rumble of aircraft engines. It reduces noise; it does not make a cabin silent. RTINGS explains the travel use case in its travel headphone guide. Fit and passive isolation also affect what you hear.

Comfort and portability are personal trade-offs
Over-ear headphones take up more room in a bag, while earbuds are easier to pack. Some people prefer the feel of over-ear headphones; others favor earbuds’ portability. Neither style is universally more comfortable, especially over several hours, so consider whether you already know a design that fits you well. Bose’s air-travel guidance also discusses the over-ear and in-ear choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck battery claims in context
Battery figures are not automatically comparable: a manufacturer rating, a reviewer’s test, and a figure measured with ANC on can describe different conditions. Look for the usage condition, and leave a margin for delays or layovers. For a wired backup, check whether the headphones accept a cable and whether the aircraft has a compatible audio jack.

Four supported headphone and earbud picks
| Model | Best fit for | What the cited coverage says |
|---|---|---|
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Travelers who want over-ear headphones and wired listening options | SoundGuys recommends this model for flying and discusses fit, isolation, its travel case, battery, and USB-C digital and 3.5 mm analog wired inputs. Tom’s Guide lists a rated 30 hours, or 24 hours with Immersive Audio; that is the publication’s listed specification, not an independently verified current manufacturer figure. |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Travelers prioritizing a travel-focused over-ear pick and long battery performance | RTINGS names it its best travel headphone. SoundGuys describes its fit and ANC favorably and reports 37 hours and 14 minutes in its own battery test; the excerpt does not state the exact test date. TechRadar says it changed its over-ear travel pick from Bose to Sony after direct comparison testing in June 2025. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Travelers who prefer compact earbuds and want an app available on Android and iOS | RTINGS compares them with AirPods Pro 3 and notes Bose app support on both Android and iOS. In that comparison, AirPods Pro 3 have somewhat better ANC and longer continuous battery. |
| Apple AirPods Pro 3 | Apple-device users who prefer compact earbuds | RTINGS reports somewhat better ANC and longer continuous battery than the Bose earbuds in its comparison. TechRadar describes them as a particularly strong option for Apple users. Check current compatibility and feature requirements for your own devices. |
The full comparison articles are RTINGS’ travel headphone guide, SoundGuys’ airplane headphone picks, TechRadar’s travel headphone guide, and Tom’s Guide’s noise-cancelling roundup. Earbud comparisons appear in RTINGS’ Bose-versus-AirPods comparison; TechRadar’s earbud overview is here.
How to choose between them
Choose over-ear headphones for a familiar, enveloping fit
If you already find over-ear headphones comfortable and have room in your carry-on, compare the Bose and Sony models. Reviewers do not agree on a single winner: SoundGuys recommends Bose for flying, while RTINGS selects Sony for travel; TechRadar records switching its travel pick to Sony after direct comparison testing in June 2025. These are editorial judgments using different methods and priorities, not a universal ranking.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Choose earbuds for smaller packing space
If compactness matters more than an over-ear fit, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) and AirPods Pro 3 are the substantiated options here. The RTINGS comparison favors AirPods Pro 3 somewhat for ANC and continuous battery, while Bose offers app support across Android and iOS. Check that each product’s current features suit your phone and that the earbuds fit securely before relying on them for a long trip.

Using headphones with seatback entertainment
Some aircraft seatback systems offer a wired audio jack. Bose names the Twelve South AirFly Pro as an option for sending that audio wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones. It is an accessory suggestion from the manufacturer, not an independently tested recommendation. Before departure, confirm that the aircraft’s jack and the adapter are compatible; alternatively, use a wired connection if your headphones support one.
