The most important Nintendo Switch 2 accessory is a microSD Express card: the console is designed exclusively for that format when you expand game storage. For protection, choose between a slim handheld case with a screen protector and a larger case that carries the dock and TV-play cables. Keep the included Switch 2 dock and AC adapter for television use; an original Switch dock is incompatible, and the original Switch adapter cannot power Switch 2 TV mode.
Our practical picks are the Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card from Samsung in 256GB, Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective for a separately purchased screen protector, Nintendo’s Carrying Case & Screen Protector for light travel, the All-In-One Carrying Case for a complete setup, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set or AC Adapter only when you need a second or replacement unit.

What comes with Switch 2, and what is genuinely optional?
A new Nintendo Switch 2 package already contains the hardware needed for handheld charging and TV play: a Switch 2 Dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. You do not need to buy another dock, charger or HDMI cable simply to use the console out of the box.
The accessories that address needs the standard package does not solve are expandable storage, screen and body protection, and convenient transport. A storage card is optional until the internal space becomes limiting, but the format decision is not optional: Nintendo says Switch 2 uses the microSD Express standard for expandable memory. Protection and cases are preference-driven, while an extra dock or adapter is useful only for a particular room, replacement situation or travel arrangement.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Accessory priorities by owner type
- Handheld-first owner: Add a microSD Express card when needed and a slim case or screen protector.
- Frequent traveler: Use the slim Nintendo bundle if you carry only the console, or a full-size case when the dock and cables come along.
- Multi-room household: Consider a second Dock Set so a television can stay wired without moving the original dock.
- Replacement buyer: Buy the Switch 2 AC Adapter for a lost or damaged adapter, or a Dock Set if the dock itself also needs replacing.
Storage: buy microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card
Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards for expandable game storage. Nintendo’s support guidance explains that the Express standard enables faster data transfer than a conventional microSD card. A regular Switch microSD card may fit the general shape of the slot, but it is not a valid recommendation for storing Switch 2 games.
The official 256GB option
Nintendo’s catalog lists the Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB as a Switch 2 accessory. Use the phrase “Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card” when checking a listing, because a listing that says only “microSD” does not establish the required Express standard. The catalog entry identifies 256GB capacity; prices and stock can change by region and date.
How much capacity should you choose?
Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, and Nintendo specifies microSD Express expansion of up to 2TB. The internal capacity is available before you buy a card, so an expansion card is a capacity decision rather than a launch requirement.
| Storage route | What the specification establishes | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Internal storage | 256GB built into the console | Start here if your installed library fits comfortably. |
| 256GB microSD Express | Official catalog capacity listed by Nintendo for the Samsung card | A straightforward expansion choice for a growing digital library. |
| Larger microSD Express card | Switch 2 supports expansion up to 2TB | Useful for a large digital collection; confirm the card is explicitly microSD Express. |
Installing and checking a card
- Turn the console off before opening the card slot, following Nintendo’s hardware instructions.
- Insert a microSD Express card in the orientation shown by the console.
- Start Switch 2 and allow the system to recognize or format the card if it requests setup.
- Confirm that the card appears as available storage before downloading a large game.
- Keep the card with the console when moving between docks or cases; the dock does not change the card’s compatibility.
Do not buy a conventional microSD card as a stopgap for Switch 2 game storage. If a product description does not clearly identify “microSD Express,” treat its compatibility as unconfirmed rather than relying on its capacity or brand name.
Screen protection: tempered glass or the official slim bundle
The screen is exposed whenever the console is used handheld, placed in a bag or inserted into a case. The two useful approaches are a separate tempered-glass protector or Nintendo’s Carrying Case & Screen Protector bundle.

Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective
TechRadar’s 2026 guide names Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective its best Switch 2 screen protector. Its relevant advantages are glare reduction, scratch resistance and an application process designed to help align the protector. It is the better fit when you already own a case or want a dedicated screen-protection upgrade without buying a Nintendo travel bundle.
Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector
Nintendo’s official bundle combines a slim carrying case with a screen protector. It is suited to console-only travel: the handheld can be protected without carrying the dock, power adapter, HDMI cable or controllers. The package does not include the console or controllers, so it is an accessory purchase rather than a complete system bundle.
Installation checklist for any protector
- Install in a clean, dust-free area before placing the console in a case.
- Clean the display with the supplied materials and check the surface under a bright light.
- Align the protector before its adhesive touches the screen; small alignment errors are harder to correct after contact.
- Press from the center outward as directed by the kit to reduce trapped bubbles.
- Check the edges and touch response before putting the console back into regular use.
An anti-reflective finish addresses reflections; it does not make the display immune to impact. A case and sensible packing still matter when the console travels with other equipment.
Cases: slim handheld travel versus full TV-setup transport
Choose the official slim case for light travel
The Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector is the compact choice when your trip involves the console and perhaps a few small essentials. Its value is low bulk: you are not paying for space intended for a dock, power brick and cables that will stay at home.
Choose the All-In-One Carrying Case for dock travel
The Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case is sized for the console, dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and up to six game cards. Select it when you need TV play at your destination and want one purpose-built container instead of packing the dock and cables loose in a general bag.

Consider Nacon Protection Case XL when you need a large third-party case
TechRadar describes the Nacon Protection Case XL as a large case with space for the handheld, dock, games and cables. It is another full-setup option, but availability varies by region. Check that the specific size and internal layout are intended for Switch 2 before ordering.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why the slim case is not a dock case
TechRadar’s review of the official slim case found it unsuitable for carrying full TV-mode gear. That is not a defect if you use the case for its intended handheld role; it is a mismatch if you expect one small case to hold the dock, adapter, HDMI cable and controllers.
| Travel need | Best-matched case | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Console in a backpack or between locations | Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Does not carry the complete TV setup. |
| Console plus dock, controllers and cables | Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case | Larger than a handheld-only case. |
| Large third-party compartment layout | Nacon Protection Case XL | Regional availability needs checking. |
Charging: use the included adapter, replace it only when necessary
The Switch 2 package includes an AC adapter and USB-C charging cable. The console’s estimated battery life is 2–6.5 hours, and Nintendo lists approximately three hours for charging under its stated conditions. Actual play time varies with the software and use pattern, so these figures are planning references rather than a guarantee for every game.
Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
The Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter is a replacement for the adapter supplied with the system. It can connect to the console or the dock, making it useful for a lost adapter, a damaged unit or a dedicated charging location. A second adapter is not required for normal ownership when the original is present and working.
Why the original Switch adapter is not a TV-mode solution
Nintendo Support states that the original Switch AC adapter cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode because its power output differs. Even if an old cable reaches the console, it should not be treated as the power source for a Switch 2 docked setup. Use the Switch 2 adapter included with the system or the official replacement.

TV play and docks: what works and what does not
The original Switch dock is incompatible
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Do not plan to reuse it as a second-room dock or as a travel dock. Switch 2 TV play requires the Switch 2 Dock and its appropriate power arrangement.
Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set
The Dock Set contains a Switch 2 Dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo describes an additional dock as a way to set up a second television in the house. It is also the sensible replacement purchase when a dock or its associated cables are missing, rather than assembling a mixed bundle from original-Switch parts.
Switch 2 supports up to 4K/60 output to a television under Nintendo’s stated specifications. The included Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable is part of the new-console package and is also included in the Dock Set, so a second-room installation can remain complete without relocating the first room’s cable set.

| If your priority is… | Buy or keep… | Do not assume… |
|---|---|---|
| More room for digital games | A clearly labeled microSD Express card, such as the catalog-listed 256GB Samsung card | That any conventional microSD card will work for Switch 2 game storage. |
| Less screen glare and scratch risk | Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective | That a case alone protects the exposed display. |
| Smallest travel load | Nintendo’s Carrying Case & Screen Protector | That the slim case carries a dock and complete TV kit. |
| TV play at a second location | Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set | That an original Switch dock and adapter can be substituted. |
| A replacement charger | Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter | That the original Switch adapter can power Switch 2 TV mode. |
| Travel with everything | All-In-One Carrying Case or Nacon Protection Case XL | That a large case is as portable as a handheld-only case. |
Setup checklist before your first trip
- Confirm storage format: If adding capacity, verify the words “microSD Express” on the packaging and listing.
- Protect the screen: Install the chosen protector before the first trip, using a clean surface and the supplied alignment materials.
- Choose the case by equipment: Count the console only, or the console plus dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, power and HDMI cables.
- Pack the correct power gear: Use the Switch 2 AC adapter; leave the original Switch adapter out of a TV-mode kit.
- Test the docked arrangement: Connect the Switch 2 Dock, adapter and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable at home before traveling.
- Separate loose items: Place game cards and cables in the case’s dedicated compartments rather than against the display.
- Check regional stock: Confirm availability and the exact model for third-party options such as the Nacon case before committing to a trip.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a high-capacity card that is not Express
Capacity alone does not establish compatibility. The card must be microSD Express; a conventional Switch microSD card is not a valid Switch 2 game-storage recommendation.

Using the old adapter for TV mode
The original Switch adapter’s different power output prevents it from serving as the Switch 2 TV-mode power source. Use the supplied Switch 2 adapter or the official replacement.
Choosing a case without counting the dock
A slim handheld case and a full TV-travel case solve different problems. If the dock, controllers and cables must travel, select the All-In-One case or a large alternative such as the Nacon Protection Case XL.
Assuming every region stocks every third-party accessory
TechRadar’s Nacon recommendation is subject to regional availability. Check the retailer and region before treating it as an available option.
Switch 2 accessory specifications at a glance
| Console or accessory detail | Stated value or scope |
|---|---|
| Built-in storage | 256GB |
| Expandable storage format | microSD Express only for expandable game storage |
| Maximum stated expansion | Up to 2TB |
| TV output | Up to 4K/60 |
| Estimated battery life | 2–6.5 hours |

| Included TV hardware | Switch 2 Dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable |
| All-In-One case capacity | Console, dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and up to six game cards |
For most owners, the sensible order is storage when needed, screen protection if the console travels, and a case sized to the equipment you actually carry. Add a Dock Set only for a second television or replacement, and add an AC Adapter only when the supplied one is unavailable or you want a separate charging station.
