The best Lord of the Rings games to play after War in the North (2026 guide)

For another combat-focused Tolkien game, start with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and then play Middle-earth: Shadow of War. They replace the action and progression of War in the North, but not its three-hero online fellowship. If cooperative play is the feature you most want, the War in the North — Legacy Edition is the closest match because it is the same adventure in a current Switch release. If you mainly want Middle-earth atmosphere and are happy to leave battles behind, choose Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game.

There is no defensible universal ranking here: the official pages establish features and platforms, not comparable review scores. The right choice depends on whether you value combat, co-op, role-playing progression, Tolkien setting, or a peaceful pace.

Quick answer: which game should you play?

Game Best for What it keeps from War in the North What changes Platform information established by the official source
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor followed by Shadow of War Solo action, enemy encounters and character progression in Tolkien’s world Third-person combat, an adventure built around fighting, and progression through abilities A single-hero structure and the Nemesis System replace the fellowship format; the reviewed Shadow of War page does not describe online co-op The official Shadow of War page links PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Windows 10
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition The closest mechanical match, including cooperative play Three switchable heroes, online co-op for up to three friends, skills, abilities and gear It is a re-release or revisit of the same game, not a new sequel Nintendo UK’s listing identifies downloadable Nintendo Switch software and records an 18 August 2026 release
Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game Hobbit life, setting and atmosphere without combat pressure The Tolkien setting and a sense of inhabiting Middle-earth It is a peaceful life sim centered on home, food and community rather than battles Wētā Workshop records a 29 July 2025 launch on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

Use War in the North as your baseline

The reason these recommendations divide so sharply is that War in the North combines several features that few Tolkien games combine at once: party-based action, character switching, online cooperation and conventional skills-and-gear progression.

Nintendo UK’s current listing for the War in the North — Legacy Edition describes three playable heroes—Eradan, Andriel and Farin—with hot-swapping between them. It also advertises online co-op for up to three friends and customization through skills, abilities and gear. That listing is for downloadable Switch software in the UK, and gives 18 August 2026 as the release date.

#1 Best Overall
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - PlayStation 2
  • Traverse the haunted Paths of the Dead, defending Minas Tirith from thousands of Sauron's minions as one of 8 characters
  • Play as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, and Frodo with exclusive voice-over provided by the films' actors
  • Twelve interactive levels players will challenge you to swing from ropes, fire catapults, kick boulders, as you face Sauron's hordes
  • Fight vicious foes including Shelob, the Witch King, the Dark Lord Sauron, and many more
  • Team up with a companion in all-new co-op Multiplayer mode-fight side-by-side to defeat Sauron and ensure the destruction of The One Ring

Those details create five useful comparison questions:

  • Do you need several heroes in one party, or is a single protagonist acceptable?
  • Must the game support online co-op, or is solo play enough?
  • Is fighting the main activity, or would you prefer exploration and domestic tasks?
  • Do you want a conventional ability-and-equipment build, or a different progression system?
  • Which platform and regional storefront can you actually use?

The recommendations below answer those questions separately instead of pretending that every game is competing on one score.

Best action alternative: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War

The two Middle-earth action games are the most natural next step when the part you miss is fighting through Tolkien’s setting. The official Shadow of War site presents the game as the sequel to Shadow of Mordor, so a new player should begin with Shadow of Mordor and continue to Shadow of War rather than starting with the sequel.

Rank #2
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria™ (PlayStation 5)
  • Feel the Fellowship: Experience the Fellowship of the Dwarves like never before, with the rich lore of the iconic fantasy world from J.R.R. Tolkien interwoven into the very fabric of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.
  • Survive the Dark: To survive the treacherous Mines of Moria players must conserve resources, hunt and gather for food and manage their sleep, temperature and noise levels. Utilize dynamic light systems for safety and to blaze a path further into the darkness. Battle unspeakable evils and survive hordes of monstrous Orcs in visceral combat, while uncovering the secret of the Shadow that looms within the mountain.
  • Base Building: Find solace from the darkness. Reveal and clear new locations to create architecture on a grand scale. Get creative and construct bases from scratch or build upon the existing environment. Beware the evils which seek to destroy Dwarven progress.
  • Rebuild and Reshape Moria: Restore the long-lost ancient kingdom of Khazad-dûm to its former glory, recovering Dwarven landmarks as the story progresses. Resurrect old mines and refire their forges to yield their untouched resources.
  • Explore: Delve into the depths of the Mines of Moria. Procedurally generated environments are abundant with resources and fraught with mystery and danger, providing a unique experience each and every time.

Why this pair fits an action-focused player

The official description emphasizes a combat-led campaign, individualized enemy and follower stories through the Nemesis System, taking and turning fortresses, and conflict with Sauron and the Ringwraiths. That gives you a strong replacement for the moment-to-moment fighting and long-term character development that made War in the North appealing.

The Nemesis System is the pair’s defining difference. Instead of repeatedly meeting interchangeable enemies, the game builds recurring rival and follower stories around named opponents. Fortress conquest then turns those relationships into a larger strategic objective. This is a different kind of progression from selecting among Eradan, Andriel and Farin, but it still gives a combat player reasons to keep developing a campaign.

What you give up compared with War in the North

  • No stated fellowship co-op: the official Shadow of War page reviewed for this guide highlights its single-hero war story, fortresses and Nemesis System; it does not describe the three-character online co-op advertised for War in the North.
  • A different party structure: you follow one central hero rather than hot-swapping among three members of a party.
  • A different story scale: fortress campaigns and the war against Sauron replace the North’s smaller fellowship perspective.

Choose this pair when combat and enemy encounters matter more than playing with friends. Do not buy it expecting a drop-in multiplayer replacement.

Rank #3
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - PlayStation 4
  • Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
  • Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
  • Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings.

Play order

  1. Play Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor first so you encounter the predecessor’s setting, systems and story before its sequel expands them.
  2. Continue to Middle-earth: Shadow of War for the larger fortress-conquest focus and further Nemesis System development.
  3. Check your regional store before purchase. The official Shadow of War page links PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Windows 10; that information does not by itself confirm current new-copy stock, backward compatibility or availability on every newer console.

Closest mechanical match: War in the North — Legacy Edition

If what you want is specifically a three-person fellowship, the most accurate answer is not another game: it is the current War in the North — Legacy Edition. Nintendo UK’s listing describes the same structure that defines the original experience—three switchable heroes, online co-op for up to three friends, and progression through skills, abilities and gear.

Why it is useful after the original

Someone who missed the game can use the Legacy Edition as an accessible way to play that format. Someone who already played it can treat the edition as a revisit rather than a sequel or spiritual successor. It preserves the exact combination that the other recommendations split apart: party roles, character switching and cooperative action.

Edition and region limits

The available official listing is a Nintendo UK page for downloadable Nintendo Switch software. It records an 18 August 2026 release date and names Aspyr as publisher. That evidence does not establish a physical cartridge, stock in another country, a current price or availability on PlayStation, Xbox or PC. Open the storefront for your own country and verify the edition before paying.

Rank #4
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)
  • Enter the pastoral world of Middle Earth where strangeness and magic abound, and danger lurks in every twilight shadow
  • As Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, you'll be encouraged to balance and utilize each character's unique moves, skills, and weaponry in order to complete your quest
  • Use strategy and magic to fight your way past Orcs and monsters as you make your way to the Cracks Of Doom
  • Fully interactive 3D environments that will immerse you in the magic of the Silmarillion as you journey to fight the ultimate battle against evil!

The word “Legacy” should therefore be read as an edition label, not as evidence of new campaign content. If your priority is a genuinely different adventure, choose the Shadow pair; if your priority is reproducing the original multiplayer structure, this is the relevant option.

Best peaceful change of pace: Tales of the Shire

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game is for a reader who wants to remain in Tolkien’s universe while abandoning combat as the central activity. Wētā Workshop describes a Hobbit life in Bywater built around decorating a home, gardening, fishing, foraging, cooking and helping neighbors. Progress is intended to happen at the player’s own pace.

What the game is—and is not

This is a life sim, not a fighting-game substitute. Its appeal is the chance to make a place in Middle-earth and participate in everyday Hobbit routines. If your favorite War in the North moments are battles, loot and coordinated abilities, the change will be substantial. If you want the setting, food, landscape and social texture without another war campaign, the difference is the point.

Best Value
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)

Richard Taylor, Co-founder, Co-CEO and Chief Creative Officer at Wētā Workshop, described the project this way: “This is a beautiful way that players who are looking for a quieter, more peaceful time can discover this in a less explored corner of this universe.”

Release date and platforms

Wētā Workshop’s current page records a 29 July 2025 launch on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. An earlier Take-Two announcement dated 23 September 2024 gave 25 March 2025 as the planned launch date and included Netflix Games in its announced platform slate. The later developer page is the appropriate source for the final date and the four platforms listed above; the earlier plan should not be treated as confirmation of a Netflix Games launch.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose it if atmosphere, Hobbit domestic life and an unhurried routine are more important than combat.
  • Choose something else if you need online co-op, a party of selectable heroes or a battle-centered campaign.
  • Consider it a tonal alternative, not a direct successor to War in the North.

Decision guide by the feature you want to keep

Your priority Recommendation Reason Main compromise
Fight enemies in a Tolkien setting Shadow of Mordor, then Shadow of War Both are action-led; the sequel centers on Nemesis stories and fortress conquest Solo-hero structure and no co-op described on the reviewed official page
Play with friends online War in the North — Legacy Edition The Nintendo UK listing explicitly advertises online co-op for up to three friends It revisits the same game and the cited listing is UK Switch download software
Switch among several characters War in the North — Legacy Edition Eradan, Andriel and Farin can be hot-swapped according to the listing No new campaign is established by the edition information
Build a character through abilities and equipment War in the North — Legacy Edition for the closest match; Shadow of War for a different progression loop The Legacy listing names skills, abilities and gear; Shadow of War offers Nemesis-driven enemy and fortress progression The systems are not equivalent, so choose based on whether party play or solo action comes first
Spend time in Middle-earth without battles Tales of the Shire Bywater life revolves around home decoration, gardening, fishing, foraging, cooking and neighbors It is a clear genre and tone change
Play on a current-generation console Tales of the Shire on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, subject to your regional store Wētā Workshop lists those platforms for its 29 July 2025 launch The cited Shadow of War platform links are for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Windows 10, while the Legacy listing is Switch-specific

Are any of these a direct co-op replacement?

No. Among the reviewed official descriptions, only the War in the North — Legacy Edition listing explicitly combines a three-hero party with online co-op for up to three friends. The Shadow games provide the closest combat substitute, but their official description focuses on one hero, enemy and follower stories, fortresses and the war against Sauron. Tales of the Shire changes the activity entirely to peaceful Hobbit life.

That distinction matters when buying for a group. A game can share the license, setting and third-person action without supporting the same number of players or the same party roles. Confirm the multiplayer feature in your own storefront and edition before assuming that a particular release supports a friend.

Platform and purchase checks before you buy

Platform information is unusually easy to misread because the three recommendations come from different kinds of pages and different release dates.

  1. Identify your hardware first. The official information reviewed here links Shadow of War to PS4, Xbox One, PC and Windows 10; lists Tales of the Shire on PC via Steam, Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; and identifies the Legacy Edition as Nintendo Switch download software in the UK.
  2. Check the country storefront. The Legacy Edition evidence is specifically a Nintendo UK listing. Do not infer that its stock, price or release status is identical elsewhere.
  3. Confirm the edition. “Legacy Edition” is the named Switch product in the listing; the available information does not establish a physical cartridge or additional campaign.
  4. Separate announced plans from final releases. The 23 September 2024 announcement for Tales of the Shire gave a planned 25 March 2025 date and mentioned Netflix Games. The developer’s current page records the eventual 29 July 2025 launch and the four platforms listed above.
  5. Verify multiplayer wording. Only the Legacy listing in this comparison explicitly states online co-op for up to three friends. Do not infer co-op from a game’s action genre or shared Tolkien setting.

How to choose in under a minute

  1. Answer “Do I need to play online with friends?” If yes, begin with the War in the North — Legacy Edition listing and check your regional Switch store.
  2. If no, answer “Do I want battles?” If yes, play Shadow of Mordor before Shadow of War.
  3. If no, choose Tales of the Shire for Bywater’s home, garden, fishing, foraging, cooking and neighbor-focused routine.
  4. If you are undecided between action and setting, decide which activity you would still enjoy after the novelty of the license fades. The Shadow pair is built around combat systems; Tales of the Shire is built around a peaceful life sim; the Legacy Edition is built around the original party-and-co-op format.

Bottom line

For the best new combat experience after War in the North, play Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and then Middle-earth: Shadow of War. For the closest match to its cooperative fellowship, choose the War in the North — Legacy Edition and verify the UK Switch listing’s relevance to your region. For Tolkien atmosphere without another battle campaign, choose Tales of the Shire. Those are different answers to different versions of “best,” and the official information does not support a single score-based winner.
