For the simplest browser-only option, start with the Internet Archive’s Internet Arcade. It runs a selection of emulated arcade games from the 1970s through the 1990s in a JavaScript-enabled browser, without a plug-in. The Archive’s MS-DOS Software Library offers a second route for some DOS titles, while Flashpoint is the better fit for preserved web games that depended on Flash or other obsolete technologies—but Flashpoint is installed software, not a website you use entirely in a tab.
Those options answer “can I play this online?” more readily than they answer “is every copy and use clearly authorized?” A game’s age, disappearance from stores, or description as “abandonware” is not a blanket license. For the strongest practical assurance, use an official or clearly licensed collection, a rights-holder release, or a current commercial re-release of the specific game.

What “legal” means for browser-based classic games
There are two separate questions:
- Technical access: Can your browser or installed preservation software run the game?
- Permission: Does the particular copy, distribution method, and way you are playing it have a clear rights basis?
A title appearing in an archive, being unavailable in shops, or being old enough to predate modern browsers does not by itself settle the second question. Collections may contain material preserved for historical or technical reasons, but a collection’s presence alone is not title-specific proof that every public use is authorized.
In the United States, 37 C.F.R. § 201.40(b)(19) contains narrow anti-circumvention exemptions for specified video-game situations. Among other conditions, one provision addresses lawfully acquired complete games whose servers no longer provide authentication, for personal local gameplay. Other provisions cover eligible libraries, archives, and museums under restricted purposes and access conditions. The regulation does not authorize every old game to be copied to a public website, and it does not turn “abandonware” into a legal category. It is also not a complete statement of copyright law outside the United States.

When a particular title matters, look for the publisher or rights holder’s own release, an explicit license, or a currently sold re-release. Treat general archive availability as a practical lead, not as a universal rights determination.

Choose among them by checking five things: whether the title is covered, whether you require a tab-only experience, how well the emulator runs it, whether saves work, and how clearly the copy’s rights are documented.
Internet Archive Internet Arcade: the easiest browser-first choice
The Internet Arcade is a collection of emulated arcade games from the 1970s–1990s that can be played in a browser. It uses JavaScript rather than a browser plug-in, so a current browser with JavaScript enabled is the normal starting requirement.
How to start a game
- Open the Internet Arcade collection in a current browser.
- Select a game from the collection’s listing.
- Wait for the in-page emulator to load, then follow the player’s on-screen instructions for inserting a virtual coin and starting a game.
- Use the emulator’s keyboard controls or its visible control panel. If there is no sound, check that the tab, browser, and operating-system audio are not muted.
Do not assume that every arcade machine will behave like original hardware. Emulation timing, input mapping, sound, and loading can differ by title and browser. A game that works in one browser may be unreliable in another, especially on a slower device or with aggressive privacy, script-blocking, or power-saving settings.
What the Arcade is—and is not
It is a convenient way to try titles that the collection has made playable through emulation. It is not a blanket declaration that every item is licensed for every user, country, or purpose. If you need a definitive rights answer for a particular game, identify the rights holder and look for an official release or explicit permission rather than relying only on the collection listing.
Internet Archive MS-DOS Software Library: useful, but less predictable
The Archive also offers an MS-DOS Software Library with an EM-DOSBOX browser player. It can run some classic DOS programs without requiring you to install DOS or a separate emulator.

Running a DOS title
- Open the MS-DOS Software Library in a JavaScript-enabled browser.
- Choose a listed program and launch its EM-DOSBOX player.
- Allow the player time to load the disk image and configure its emulated environment.
- Use the title’s keyboard controls. If a game expects a particular key layout, consult the title’s own instructions or documentation included in the item.
The Archive’s DOS help documentation describes possible speed, compatibility, and browser-performance problems. A fast modern computer does not guarantee correct timing: some older software depends on CPU behavior, sound hardware, or memory arrangements that emulation must approximate.
Saving is a major limitation
The documented help page states: “Currently, there is no way to save your game, although we are trying to work out if this is technologically possible.” That page dates from 2018, so check the live player before beginning a long session. If the current interface still lacks persistent saves, treat the collection as suitable for short sessions, demonstrations, and experimentation rather than a full replacement for an installed release.
Why a DOS game may be missing
The Archive says some games are not included because of file size, incompatibility, or continued commercial sale. Therefore, absence from the library does not mean a title was forgotten or is free to copy. It may instead indicate a technical constraint or an intentional decision to leave a commercially available product out.
Flashpoint: preserving old web games outside the browser tab
Many web games depended on Flash, Java applets, browser plug-ins, or a particular website structure. When those technologies disappeared, simply placing a game file on a modern page often stopped working. Flashpoint addresses that problem as an installed preservation package.
Why it uses a local proxy
Flashpoint’s FAQ explains that archived web games can depend on an original site location or on several assets loaded from different places. Its local proxy recreates those expected requests so the preserved game can function on your computer. That architecture is why Flashpoint is not just a URL that runs entirely in a browser.

- Download the Flashpoint package from its official project source and review the current system requirements.
- Install or extract it on a drive with enough space for the edition and the games you intend to use.
- Launch the Flashpoint application, search its catalog, and start a preserved work from the library interface.
- If a title fails, use the project’s current troubleshooting guidance; failures can come from missing assets, an incorrect launch configuration, or operating-system support rather than from the game itself.
The FAQ primarily supports Windows 8.1 and newer. macOS and Linux versions are available, but the project describes them as having fewer maintainers or features. Check the current FAQ before choosing an edition, especially if you need a non-Windows system.

How large is the preserved catalog?
Flashpoint’s FAQ reported 221,042 games and animations preserved on October 12, 2026. A project overview describes more than 200,000 preserved web experiences across over one hundred technologies. These figures describe the project’s catalog, not a guarantee that a specific game will launch on your operating system or that every item has the same rights status.
Buying an updated classic release
If the game you want is still commercially available in an updated form, purchasing that edition is often the clearest practical route. The Internet Archive’s DOS help page names GOG and Steam as examples of storefronts that sell updated vintage DOS programs. That reference does not confirm a particular title, edition, price, region, or current listing.
Check the exact product before paying
- Search for the precise game name, not merely a similarly titled sequel or compilation.
- Confirm the supported operating system and whether the release is a native port, a bundled emulator, or another compatibility layer.
- Check your country or store region; availability and licensing can differ.
- Read the product page for multiplayer, controller, display, and save support if those features matter to you.
- Keep your purchase receipt and account access. A commercial license normally covers the edition and uses described by its terms, not every version of the underlying game.
This route is not limited to DOS, but the evidence here specifically supports it as an option for updated vintage DOS software. Do not infer that every classic game is sold on either storefront.

How to choose the right route for a specific game
If you want to play immediately in a tab
Check the Internet Arcade first for arcade titles, then the MS-DOS Software Library for DOS software. Expect differences in controls, performance, and save behavior. A browser-only requirement rules out Flashpoint because Flashpoint is installed preservation software.
If the game was an old web or Flash title
Look for Flashpoint rather than a random “Flash games” mirror. Its local-proxy design exists precisely because these works may require their original URLs and several dependent assets. Confirm operating-system support before installing.
If you want the strongest purchase and support trail
Search for an official or current commercial re-release. Verify the specific listing and region instead of assuming that a storefront carries every title mentioned in a general guide.

If the game is absent everywhere
Do not fill the gap with an unverified ROM or download simply because the game is old. Search for a rights-holder statement, an authorized reissue, or a clearly licensed preservation project. If none exists, the legally safest answer may be that no clearly authorized browser route has been established.

The player does not load
- Confirm JavaScript is enabled for the collection.
- Temporarily test without an extension that blocks scripts, embedded content, or cross-site requests.
- Try a current mainstream browser and a fresh tab.
- Check whether the collection itself reports an outage or a title-specific incompatibility.
The game runs too fast, too slowly, or with broken sound
These symptoms are common emulation problems rather than proof that your computer is defective. Close other demanding tabs, disable aggressive battery-saving modes, and try another current browser. If only one title fails, treat it as a compatibility limitation and use an installed or commercial edition if one is available.
Controls do not respond
Click inside the emulator so it has keyboard focus, then check the title’s control instructions. Browser accessibility settings, operating-system shortcuts, and focus-stealing extensions can intercept keys. Avoid changing controls repeatedly until you know whether the player has a per-game configuration.
Your progress disappears
The documented DOS player has no save function, and browser sessions can also be lost when a tab is closed or reloaded. Use short sessions unless the current player explicitly provides a persistent save mechanism. For campaigns that require reliable saves, an installed or current commercial release is usually more suitable.
