The Best Laptops You Can Buy for Less Than $700 in 2026

The best laptop under $700 depends first on your operating system and workload, not on a model name. For most buyers, the 2026 Apple MacBook Neo is the strongest all-around choice if macOS and its 8GB non-upgradeable memory fit your needs. Choose the 16GB HP OmniBook 3 14 for conventional Windows software, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 for a ChromeOS convertible, or the HP Victus 15 only when affordable 1080p gaming matters more than portability and battery life.

Prices and stock move quickly, and each family below has multiple processors, memory sizes, screens and storage options. The $700 limit applies to the exact configuration you purchase, not simply to a model name. Check the live seller listing, seller, condition, return policy and specifications before paying.

HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025), 16GB version General Windows work Prefer the Ryzen 5 230 configuration when available; 16GB memory recommendation Snapdragon versions can have Windows-on-ARM app-compatibility limits; configurations vary Live price not stated; confirm the 16GB SKU
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) ChromeOS convertible and school work Core Ultra 5 115U; 8GB memory; 256GB storage; FHD+ display; 1440p webcam; about 10 hours of battery life Stronger configurations may be difficult to find; ChromeOS cannot run every desktop application Under-$700 configuration cited; verify stock and exact specification
HP Victus 15 (2022), RTX 3050 version Entry-level 1080p gaming Core i5-12500H; RTX 3050; 8GB memory; 512GB storage; 60Hz FHD screen Bulky; roughly one hour while gaming; 8GB can restrict performance, although upgradeable Sale/configuration dependent; not a standing current bargain
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) Portable ChromeOS media tablet Detachable design; keyboard cover included Keyboard suits short emails rather than sustained typing; weak speakers; no 3.5mm headphone jack; ChromeOS app limits Verify current availability and configuration
Dell XPS 13 (2026), 16GB version if affordable Premium, light Windows portability 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600 touchscreen; Core 5 320; 2.2 pounds; 14:29 tested battery result Sub-$700 versions commonly have only 8GB; webcam image quality was weak in Tom’s Guide testing Only some configurations can fall below $700; confirm memory and price
Acer Aspire Go 16 AI (sale example) Large-screen value when a deal is live Intel Core 7; 16GB memory; 512GB SSD Evidence is a time-limited deal, not a regular price or long-term recommendation TechRadar listed $699.99 during its October 2026 sale coverage

RTINGS says its 2026 guide draws on testing of more than 175 laptops, along with price, availability and visitor feedback. That does not mean every one of those machines was tested specifically for this list, so use the recommendations as a starting point and verify the configuration you can actually buy.

Choose the operating system before the model

Windows: the broadest desktop-software choice

Windows is the safest default if you need traditional desktop programs, specialist utilities, peripherals or games. It also gives you the widest range of hardware at this price. The 16GB HP OmniBook 3 14 is the Windows pick here because that memory level leaves more room for browser tabs, documents and video calls than an 8GB configuration.

#1 Best Overall
HP OmniBook 3 17.3 inch Laptop PC, FHD Display, AMD Ryzen 3 30, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, AMD Radeon 610M Graphics, Windows 11 Home, Mica Silver, 17-dp0199nr
  • FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
  • AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
  • ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
  • AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

Processor branding is not enough to identify the right OmniBook 3 14. RTINGS specifically points to a Ryzen 5 230 version when available because it avoids the compatibility considerations that can accompany Snapdragon-based Windows-on-ARM models. A Snapdragon configuration may be perfectly suitable if your required applications have native or proven compatible versions; check each essential program before buying.

macOS: excellent integration, a different application ecosystem

The MacBook Neo is the premium-feeling all-rounder in this price category, but it is not simply a faster Windows laptop. macOS uses a different software ecosystem, file-management conventions and accessory support. Confirm that your work, school services and games are available for macOS before choosing it.

Its 8GB memory is soldered and cannot be expanded, so the low entry price comes with a fixed multitasking ceiling. Touch ID and larger storage cost extra, and the keyboard is not backlit. Those details matter more than a small processor difference if you work in dim rooms, keep large projects locally or expect to keep the laptop for many years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ChromeOS: simple and secure when your work fits the browser

Chromebooks work well for web applications, Google Workspace, streaming, school portals and Android apps that run on ChromeOS. They are a poor fit for software that requires a full Windows or macOS desktop installation. Before buying, list every required application and confirm that it works in a browser or has a compatible Android version; do not assume a familiar service’s web presence includes all of its desktop features.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 offers the most capable Chromebook form factor in this group. The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 is lighter and more tablet-like, but its keyboard and speakers make it a specialist media device rather than a primary work computer.

Detailed picks and their trade-offs

Apple MacBook Neo: best overall under $700 when the base SKU qualifies

RTINGS names the MacBook Neo its better overall laptop in the under-$700 comparison, describing a more premium and compact experience than its Windows alternative. Tom’s Guide lists a 13-inch 2408 × 1506 Liquid Retina display, an A18 Pro six-core CPU, 8GB memory, storage options up to 512GB and a 2.7-pound weight. In Tom’s Guide testing, its battery result was 13 hours 28 minutes; that is an outlet-specific test result, not a promise of everyday runtime.

This is the sensible pick for someone who values a compact chassis, strong battery behavior and macOS integration for browsing, writing, schoolwork, office applications and supported creative tools. The high-resolution display is also a better fit for text and photo work than a basic 1080p panel.

  • Check before purchase: the exact memory and storage SKU, whether Touch ID is included, and whether the current listing remains under $700.
  • Main compromise: 8GB cannot be upgraded. Large creative projects, virtual machines and heavy multitasking can expose that limit sooner than ordinary school or office work.
  • Who should skip it: anyone dependent on Windows-only software, upgradeable memory or a backlit keyboard.

HP OmniBook 3 14: the Windows recommendation

RTINGS identifies the HP OmniBook 3 14 as its best Windows laptop under $700, with a 16GB configuration as the one to seek. The guide calls the Ryzen 5 230 version a good choice when available because it avoids the Windows-on-ARM compatibility questions associated with some Snapdragon versions. Do not treat the product family as one fixed specification: processor, memory and other components change by SKU.

Sixteen gigabytes gives a Windows system useful headroom for dozens of browser tabs, office applications, messaging, spreadsheets and video meetings. It is a more durable choice than an otherwise similar 8GB model if the price difference is modest. If you find only a Snapdragon model, verify native support or reliable emulation for every work application, printer utility and security tool you need.

Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714: the convertible Chromebook

The Chromebook Plus Spin 714 combines a 360-degree hinge with a well-built, portable chassis, an FHD+ display, a comfortable keyboard and a 1440p webcam. The cited under-$700 configuration uses a Core Ultra 5 115U, 8GB memory and 256GB storage. RTINGS reports about 10 hours of battery life for that configuration.

It suits students, travelers and office users whose work is browser-based and who want tablet or tent modes for reading and presentations. The 256GB local storage is adequate for ChromeOS files and offline media but leaves less room than a 512GB Windows laptop for a large local library. RTINGS also notes that stronger configurations may be difficult to find, so do not pay more simply because a listing carries the same model name.

HP Victus 15 with RTX 3050: gaming on a strict budget

The HP Victus 15 example is an older 2022 configuration, not a universal 2026 recommendation. It pairs an Intel Core i5-12500H with an RTX 3050, 8GB memory, 512GB storage and a 60Hz full-HD display. RTINGS says this combination can reach a relatively solid 60 frames per second at 1080p when graphics settings are adjusted.

  • 14-Inch HD Micro-Edge Display:Enjoy clear visuals on the 14-inch HD (1366 x 768) anti-glare screen with 250-nit brightness and 62.5% sRGB coverage. The micro-edge bezel delivers a 79% screen-to-body ratio in a compact design. An HP True Vision 720p HD camera with noise reduction and dual-array microphones supports clear video calls, remote work, and online learning.
  • Modern Connectivity and Wireless Technology: Stay connected with Wi-Fi 6 (2x2) for faster wireless speeds and Bluetooth 5.4 for seamless pairing with accessories. Versatile port selection includes 1 USB Type-C 10Gbps with DisplayPort 1.2 for external displays, 2 USB Type-A 5Gbps ports for peripherals, 1 HDMI 1.4b port, 1 headphone/microphone combo jack, and 1 multi-format SD media card reader. Connect monitors, transfer files quickly, and expand your workspace with ease.
  • All-Day Battery Life and Portable Design: Enjoy up to 11 hours of video playback, 7.5 hours of mixed usage, or 7.5 hours of wireless streaming on a single charge, perfect for students and professionals on the go. Weighing just 3.24 lb and measuring 12.76" x 8.86" x 0.71", this lightweight laptop fits easily in backpacks and bags. The stylish willow green top cover with matte finish and natural silver keyboard deck with vertical brushing pattern offer a modern, professional look.
  • AI-Enhanced Productivity: Access Microsoft Copilot instantly with the dedicated Copilot key for faster assistance. AI Noise Reduction filters background sounds and improves voice clarity during calls. Dual speakers provide clear audio, while the full-size natural silver keyboard and HP Imagepad support comfortable typing and navigation.

The 60Hz panel means you are not buying a modern high-refresh gaming experience, even if a game renders above 60 frames per second. Eight gigabytes can significantly limit performance and multitasking, although the memory is upgradeable. The chassis is bulky, and RTINGS reports about one hour of battery life while gaming; plan to play near an outlet. A discounted listing can make sense for a buyer who values the discrete GPU over portability, but compare the exact age, warranty and upgrade cost before committing.

Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5: a detachable for light tasks

The Chromebook Duet 5 is best understood as a ChromeOS media tablet with an included keyboard cover. It can handle browsing, streaming, reading and simple documents while taking little space in a bag. The keyboard is comfortable enough for short emails but not sustained writing, and the speakers are weak. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Its ChromeOS app limitations are more consequential than its tablet convenience. Choose it only when your work is light and browser-based, and budget for Bluetooth or USB-C audio if wired headphones matter. It is not a substitute for the Spin 714 or a Windows laptop for long typing sessions, coding environments that need desktop tools or demanding multitasking.

Dell XPS 13: premium Windows portability if 16GB fits

The 2026 XPS 13 offers a 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600 touchscreen, a Core 5 320 processor and a 2.2-pound weight. Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours 29 minutes in its battery test. That figure applies to the tested unit and method, not every XPS 13 configuration. The review also found weak webcam image quality, a relevant drawback for frequent meetings.

RTINGS says configurations comfortably below $700 generally have only 8GB memory and recommends moving to 16GB if the budget allows. Treat this as a premium portability option, not an automatic bargain: a 16GB model may exceed the ceiling, while an 8GB model may undermine the reason to choose it over a less expensive Windows laptop.

Acer Aspire Go 16 AI: a deal to check, not a permanent pick

TechRadar listed an Acer Aspire Go 16 AI at $699.99 in its October 2026 sale coverage, with an Intel Core 7, 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD. That exact listing demonstrates how a large-screen, 16GB Windows laptop can briefly meet the ceiling. It does not establish a current price, normal street value or future availability. If you see the deal, confirm the seller, return terms, operating-system edition and exact processor before treating it as an alternative to the OmniBook 3 14.

Compare the specifications that actually change the decision

Buying axis What to inspect on the listing Why it matters
Operating system Windows, macOS or ChromeOS; compatibility with required applications ChromeOS is limited to compatible browser and Android workflows, while Windows-on-ARM models can require application checks.
Processor Exact model and platform, not just Core, Ryzen, Snapdragon or A-series branding Different CPUs within one family can have different performance and software compatibility.
Memory 8GB or 16GB; whether it is soldered or replaceable Sixteen gigabytes provides more multitasking headroom. The MacBook Neo’s 8GB is not upgradeable; the cited Victus memory is upgradeable.
Storage 256GB, 512GB or another capacity; expansion options Local photos, games and creative files consume space quickly. The Spin 714 has 256GB, while the cited Victus and Aspire Go configurations have 512GB.
Display Resolution, size, refresh rate, touch support and hinge type A 60Hz gaming screen, a high-resolution touchscreen and a convertible panel serve different priorities.
Battery and weight Independent test result, chassis weight and your expected workload Tom’s Guide measured 13:28 for the MacBook Neo and 14:29 for the XPS 13; RTINGS estimates about 10 hours for the Spin 714 and about one hour while gaming on the Victus.
Upgradeability Memory and storage access, available slots and warranty implications An inexpensive 8GB laptop is less attractive if the memory cannot be expanded.
Seller and condition New, refurbished or open-box status; seller identity; return and warranty terms A sale price can hide a different condition, shorter warranty or nonstandard configuration.

How to buy an under-$700 laptop without a specification mistake

  1. Write down your non-negotiable applications. Include office suites, school portals, creative software, games, printer utilities, VPN clients and any company security tools.
  2. Eliminate incompatible operating systems. Confirm macOS support before choosing the MacBook Neo, and confirm browser or Android support before choosing either Chromebook.
  3. Set a memory floor. Prefer 16GB for Windows if your budget permits. Accept 8GB only when the workload is light and the memory can be upgraded or the platform’s limits are understood.
  4. Choose the form factor. A conventional clamshell is usually the most efficient use of money; a convertible adds touch and tablet modes; a detachable prioritizes portability; a gaming laptop adds GPU performance but weight and plugged-in use.
  5. Check the exact SKU. Match processor, RAM, storage, display and operating system against the listing, not against a review of a different configuration.
  6. Verify the live total. Confirm the current price, taxes or shipping where applicable, seller, condition, return window and warranty. A laptop at $699.99 in a dated sale article may no longer qualify.
  7. Plan accessories and upgrades. A gaming laptop may need a memory upgrade; a Chromebook Duet 5 may need wireless audio; a non-backlit keyboard may require a different work environment.
  8. Test immediately after delivery. Check display defects, keyboard, ports, webcam, wireless connections, charging, storage capacity and the advertised processor before the return period expires.

Which laptop fits common workloads?

Web, documents, streaming and schoolwork

Choose the MacBook Neo if macOS supports your school services and you value battery life and a compact premium design. Choose the 16GB OmniBook 3 14 for Windows applications. Choose the Spin 714 when your work is browser-first and a touchscreen convertible is useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large numbers of browser tabs and office multitasking

Make 16GB your target. The OmniBook 3 14 is the straightforward Windows choice, while the cited Aspire Go 16 AI sale configuration shows the value of waiting for a deal with 16GB and a 512GB SSD. Avoid assuming that an 8GB model will behave the same way simply because its processor has a similar name.

Gaming

The RTX 3050 Victus 15 is the gaming-specific option in this group. Expect 1080p gaming around 60 frames per second only with settings adjusted, a 60Hz screen, upgradeable-but-limited 8GB memory and roughly one hour of battery life during gaming. If you need quiet travel, long unplugged sessions or a high-refresh display, this category is the wrong compromise at this budget.

Travel and media consumption

The MacBook Neo and XPS 13 prioritize low weight and tested battery results. The Duet 5 is the easiest to use as a tablet, but its keyboard, speakers and application limits make it a secondary device for many people. The Spin 714 is the middle ground when you need a real keyboard and tablet modes.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Buying by family name: Two laptops with the same name can have different processors, memory, storage and screens. Use the SKU and listing specification.
  • Assuming every Chromebook replaces a Windows laptop: Test your required applications in a browser or Android version first.
  • Ignoring ARM compatibility: Check software support for Snapdragon Windows models before purchase.
  • Treating 8GB as universal: It may be adequate for light work but can constrain multitasking and gaming. Look for upgradeability or choose 16GB.
  • Confusing battery tests with guarantees: The 13:28, 14:29, 10-hour and one-hour figures come from particular units, outlets and workloads.
  • Calling a sale a permanent value: The $699.99 Aspire Go 16 AI figure was tied to TechRadar’s October 2026 sale coverage. Recheck it at checkout.
  • Expecting gaming performance on battery: The Victus example is designed around plugged-in play; its reported gaming endurance is about one hour.
  • Forgetting ergonomics: A detachable keyboard can be fine for short messages but tiring for long reports. A 60Hz display may be acceptable for casual gaming but not for competitive play.

Bottom-line recommendations

Buy the MacBook Neo when you want the most polished compact experience and your applications work on macOS, while accepting fixed 8GB memory and a non-backlit keyboard. Buy the 16GB HP OmniBook 3 14 for the safest general Windows recommendation, preferably with the Ryzen 5 230 configuration. Choose the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 for a capable ChromeOS convertible, and the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 only as a light tablet-first device. Select the HP Victus 15 only for a discounted, upgradeable entry-level gaming machine and realistic expectations about its 60Hz screen, bulk and battery. Treat the Dell XPS 13 and Acer Aspire Go 16 AI as configuration- and price-dependent alternatives, not guaranteed under-$700 choices.
