For the KEF XIO, start with Movie for films and cinematic television, Music for most songs, and Dialogue when voices are difficult to understand. Choose Direct for an unvirtualised two-channel presentation and Night when you need to reduce the gap between quiet and loud sounds. Then match Bass Extension to your room and blend any subwoofer by ear rather than applying a fixed numeric preset.
These are starting points, not universal EQ recipes. The room, TV connection, listening position, programme mix and subwoofer placement all change the result, so make one adjustment at a time.

KEF XIO profiles at a glance
The XIO manual documents five distinct listening profiles. They change the balance and processing of the soundbar; they are not five versions of the same equaliser curve.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movie | Enhanced as part of the cinematic voicing | More soundstage and virtual cinematic effects | Preserved for impact | Impactful when the mix calls for it | Films and cinematic TV |
| Music | Natural rather than spotlighted | Minimal effects for a balanced presentation | Natural musical contrast | Balanced with the rest of the mix | Most music listening |
| Direct | As recorded in the two-channel source | No virtualisation | As delivered by the source | Dependent on the source and your bass settings | Unprocessed two-channel playback |
| Dialogue | Strongest emphasis on vocal frequencies and reduced background masking | Less important than vocal focus | Speech is prioritised over cinematic contrast | Can seem lighter if bass was masking voices | News, documentaries, dramas and unclear speech |
| Night | Helps quiet speech remain audible at low listening levels | Not the main purpose | Compressed: loud sounds are reduced and quiet sounds brought closer | Less startling at night | Late-night viewing or noise-sensitive rooms |
Use Default as a useful comparison when Movie sounds over-processed. Switching between profiles on the same scene is more informative than judging from memory, because a different programme or volume can otherwise appear to be a setting change.

Best settings for movies and cinematic TV
Start with Movie
Movie is the appropriate first choice when you want the XIO to enlarge a film soundtrack. KEF describes it as enhancing the cinematic experience, dialogue, soundstage and impactful effects. It is therefore the profile to try for action films, science-fiction, live-event cinema and television dramas mixed for a broad sound field.
Let a familiar scene run for several minutes before changing anything. Listen for three separate qualities: whether dialogue stays intelligible during effects, whether sounds appear to extend beyond the bar, and whether bass arrives with the effect instead of lingering after it. If all three are convincing, leave the profile alone and make only room or subwoofer adjustments that solve a specific problem.
When Default is better
Some programmes already contain aggressive surround or height processing. If Movie makes pans, reverberation or voices sound exaggerated, compare the same scene with Default. Default can be the better choice for older television mixes, simple sitcoms or content whose original balance you prefer. The decision is about naturalness in your room, not about choosing the mode with the most audible effect.

Movie settings for different film problems
- Explosions are impressive but voices disappear: keep Movie initially, select a room-size setting that matches the room, and reduce excessive bass before abandoning the profile. Too much low-frequency energy can mask the vocal range.
- The sound field feels artificial: compare Default, then Direct if the source is two-channel and you want no virtualisation. Direct will not recreate a cinematic field; it is a deliberate reduction of processing.
- Loud scenes disturb other people: use Night. It compresses dynamics so quiet sounds remain audible while loud sounds are reduced.
- Bass sounds detached from the picture: lower subwoofer gain and check placement before increasing other processing. A subwoofer that is easy to locate by ear is usually too loud or poorly integrated.
Best settings for music
Use Music for a balanced presentation
Music is the best general starting profile for albums, radio and streamed concerts. KEF describes it as balanced and natural with minimal effects, so instruments retain their relationships instead of being pushed toward a theatrical soundstage. Start at a moderate volume and use a well-recorded track with a vocal, bass line and percussion as your reference.
Judge the profile over a complete song, not a single bass hit. A good setting keeps the lead vocal centred, lets low notes have pitch rather than just weight, and leaves cymbals or strings clear without adding a sharp edge. If you change the subwoofer, return to the same track after every small adjustment.
When Direct is the right musical choice
Direct is for listeners who want unvirtualised two-channel playback. It avoids the XIO’s virtual sound-field treatment, which can make a stereo recording feel wider but can also change its intended image. Choose Direct for carefully produced stereo music, critical listening from a central seat, or any time you prefer the recording’s original left-right perspective.

Direct is not automatically more accurate for every room. A room with strong reflections, a television mounted off-centre or a listener sitting far to one side may benefit from Music’s more forgiving presentation. Switch between Music and Direct using the same passage and keep the one that places voices and instruments most convincingly.

For music, the subwoofer should fill in the lowest register without announcing its location. Start with its gain low, then raise it gradually until you just notice the bass filling out the sound and stop there. If kick drums become a separate thump, reduce gain or move the subwoofer rather than changing to a more processed profile.
Best settings for clear speech
Choose Dialogue first
Dialogue is the XIO’s dedicated intelligibility profile. The manual says it enhances speech clarity by emphasising vocal frequencies and reducing background noise, making it suitable for programmes where understanding spoken words is essential. Try it first for news, documentaries, interviews, podcasts played through the TV and dialogue-heavy dramas.
Use a scene with both conversation and background activity. The useful test is not whether voices become louder in isolation; it is whether you can follow every word without repeatedly increasing volume or using subtitles. Keep the master volume at the level you normally watch, because a setting that works only when unusually loud has not solved the underlying problem.
If Dialogue sounds too prominent
Vocal emphasis can make a presenter or actor sound forward. If that happens, compare Movie and Default, then reduce excessive bass if low-frequency energy was covering the speech. Do not compensate by turning the entire soundbar up: that raises effects and background sound along with the voice.
Night mode for quiet households
Night is different from Dialogue. Dialogue changes the emphasis of the speech range; Night changes dynamics. It compresses the level difference so quiet words remain audible while sudden loud effects are reduced. Use Night when the problem is disturbing others or constantly reaching for the remote, rather than when voices are intrinsically masked.

How to set up the XIO in a useful order
- Connect the TV correctly. Use HDMI eARC when the television provides it. If the TV has no eARC connection, use optical. Enable the television’s eARC and CEC controls as required; manufacturers use different names and menu locations for those functions.
- Choose the content profile. Select Movie, Music, Direct, Dialogue or Night according to what you are watching or hearing. Use Default as a neutral comparison if Movie or another profile sounds processed.
- Set the room size. In the XIO’s Bass Extension control, choose the room-size option that most closely matches the listening room. Larger-room selections use a lower roll-off point, while smaller-room selections roll off higher.
- Establish a sensible volume. Play familiar material at the level you normally use. Extreme volume makes it difficult to distinguish a profile change from a loudness change.
- Integrate the subwoofer, if fitted. Begin with low subwoofer gain, then increase it slowly until the bass fills the presentation without sounding like a separate source.
- Make one fine adjustment. Change Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance, crossover controls, gain or polarity only after the profile and room size are set. Listen again before making another change.
- Save the setting by use case. Keep a movie setting, a music setting and a speech or night setting in mind rather than searching for one compromise that fits every programme.
Understanding the XIO’s bass controls
The advanced controls are easiest to use when each is treated as a different job. Changing several at once can hide the cause of a problem.
Bass Extension
Bass Extension adjusts the speaker roll-off through a room-size selection. The larger-room choices move the roll-off point lower. Select the room size that reflects the acoustic space around the soundbar, not the size of the entire open-plan floor if walls or furniture create a much smaller listening area.
Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance
This control shifts bass responsibility between the XIO and a connected subwoofer. If the bar sounds thin and the subwoofer is working hard, move the balance toward the subwoofer in small steps. If bass is localisable or boomy, shift some responsibility back to the bar or lower subwoofer gain.
High-Pass Frequency
High-Pass Frequency sends frequencies above the selected point to the soundbar. Raising the hand-off can reduce low-frequency work for the bar, but an unnecessarily high setting may make the transition audible or leave the overall sound lean. Change it only while listening to material with sustained bass and male speech.
Sub Out Low-Pass Frequency
Sub Out Low-Pass Frequency sends frequencies below the selected point to the subwoofer. The high-pass and low-pass settings should form a coherent hand-off. If you hear a hole around the transition, or a lump that follows certain notes, return to a more conservative setting and revisit placement.
Sub Gain
Sub Gain controls the subwoofer’s output level. The practical target is not maximum bass; it is bass that is noticed only when removed. Use a track with a repeating low note, raise the gain slowly from a low starting point, and stop when the lowest notes become complete without drawing attention to the subwoofer.

Sub Polarity
Sub Polarity can address cancellation when the soundbar and subwoofer are moving out of phase. If bass is unexpectedly weak at the main seat despite adequate gain, try the alternate polarity and compare at the same volume. Keep the option that produces fuller, more even bass across your normal listening position; do not select it simply because one corner of the room becomes louder.

Subwoofer placement and wireless integration
Try more than one position
KEF recommends placing a subwoofer at the front of the room or slightly to the side and trying different positions because every room behaves differently. Start near the front wall, then compare a side position while listening from the main seat. Avoid judging from the subwoofer’s location; low frequencies can seem strong beside the cabinet and weak where you actually sit.
Move the subwoofer a small distance at a time. A position that produces even bass at the sofa is more useful than one that creates a dramatic peak in a single corner. Keep ventilation clear and avoid placing the cabinet where furniture rattles against it.
Wireless pairing
The KW2 RX Receiver enables wireless pairing of a compatible KEF subwoofer. KEF Connect can identify the subwoofer model to make integration easier. Complete the wireless pairing before adjusting gain, polarity or crossover so that you are tuning the final signal path rather than a temporary connection.
Choosing an integration approach
| Approach | Room and placement considerations | Adjustment priority | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| No subwoofer | Simplest placement and no separate low-frequency source | Use Bass Extension and the selected profile conservatively | Small rooms or listeners who prefer tight, contained bass |
| Compatible subwoofer near the front | Usually easiest to align with the soundbar and screen | Low gain first, then Balance and crossover | Cinematic impact without a visibly separate bass source |
| Compatible subwoofer slightly to the side | May smooth room modes; requires listening tests | Placement, then polarity and gain | Rooms where the front position creates a peak or null |
| Wireless via KW2 RX Receiver | More placement flexibility, with a pairing step | Confirm pairing before acoustic tuning | Rooms where a cable would limit the best subwoofer location |
TV connection and settings that affect sound
Prefer HDMI eARC
HDMI eARC is KEF’s preferred connection for the XIO when available. It supports the TV-to-soundbar audio link while also allowing the television remote and other control functions to work through the appropriate CEC setup. Select the HDMI port labelled eARC or ARC according to the television’s documentation, then enable eARC and CEC in the TV menus.

Use optical when eARC is unavailable
Optical is the fallback for televisions without eARC. It is a straightforward digital connection, but the TV may expose fewer control and format options. Set the TV’s audio output to the optical connection and verify that the XIO is receiving sound before changing profiles.

CEC and eARC names vary
TV manufacturers use different names for HDMI-CEC and eARC. If the soundbar does not turn on with the TV, the remote does not control volume, or audio comes from the television speakers, check the TV’s HDMI-control and audio-output menus rather than assuming the XIO profile is at fault.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Voices are still hard to understand
- Select Dialogue and replay a speech-heavy scene.
- Reduce excessive subwoofer gain or move the subwoofer if bass is covering consonants.
- Compare Default with Movie if Dialogue sounds unnaturally forward.
- Check that the TV is outputting audio to the XIO through HDMI eARC or optical rather than its internal speakers.
Movie mode sounds too processed
Switch to Default for the same scene. If the source is two-channel and you want no virtualisation, try Direct. Keep the profile that gives the clearest placement of voices and effects from your normal seat.
Bass is weak even after increasing gain
Do not keep raising the gain. Try the other subwoofer polarity, check the High-Pass and Sub Out Low-Pass relationship, and move the subwoofer from its current position. Cancellation or a room null can make a louder setting less effective.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Lower Sub Gain, reduce the subwoofer’s share with Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance, and test a different position. A subwoofer should support the soundbar rather than call attention to its cabinet.
Night mode sounds flat
That is a consequence of its purpose: dynamic compression reduces the difference between quiet and loud passages. Use it only when keeping levels contained matters more than full cinematic contrast, and return to Movie, Music or Dialogue for normal daytime listening.
The soundbar and subwoofer do not behave consistently
Confirm the wireless pairing or cable connection first, then make sure the selected room size reflects the actual listening area. Change one control at a time and listen from the main seat; a setting that sounds impressive beside the subwoofer may be uneven across the room.
Practical starting setups
Film night in a medium-sized living room
- Connection: HDMI eARC.
- Profile: Movie.
- Bass Extension: room-size selection matching the living room.
- Subwoofer: low initial gain, then gradual increase until bass fills the scene.
- Adjustment: if dialogue is masked, reduce bass before increasing overall volume.
Two-channel music from the main listening seat
- Connection: HDMI eARC or optical, depending on the TV.
- Profile: Music for a natural, lightly processed balance; Direct if you specifically want unvirtualised stereo.
- Subwoofer: integrate conservatively and check that bass notes retain pitch.
- Adjustment: compare the same song at the same volume before choosing Music or Direct.
News or documentary viewing
- Profile: Dialogue.
- Subwoofer: reduce gain if low-frequency effects or room resonance cover words.
- Alternative: Night when the main problem is keeping loud passages from disturbing other people.
- Adjustment: judge success by understanding every sentence without repeatedly changing volume.
Late-night film
- Profile: Night.
- Connection: use the same eARC or optical connection as daytime viewing.
- Adjustment: if speech remains unclear, try Dialogue only if its vocal emphasis is acceptable; otherwise return to Night and address excessive bass.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The XIO documentation defines the intended behaviour of each profile and the function of the bass controls, but it does not provide independent numerical measurements showing how many decibels of improvement each profile delivers. Treat the profiles as listening tools with documented purposes, not as laboratory-ranked presets.
Because rooms, programme mixes and subwoofer positions differ, the most reliable method is sequential: choose the profile for the content, match the room-size setting, place the subwoofer sensibly, start gain low, and make small listening-based changes. That approach gives you a repeatable setup without pretending that one set of numbers can suit every XIO installation.
