The Best Kart Racing Games to Play if You Like Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

The right follow-up to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds depends on which part you enjoy most. Its defining feature is the Travel Ring: after the first lap, racers enter another world for a transformed second lap, then return to the original course for a final lap with changed shortcuts, hazards, Rings, items and sometimes Frenzy gates. If that mid-race transformation is your priority, treat it as the benchmark. If you care more about vehicle tuning, chaotic items, couch multiplayer or ranked online competition, use those as separate filters rather than assuming another kart racer is automatically a match.

No reliable evidence supports a universal ranking of every rival game. The practical approach is to start with the candidates below, verify their current features on the publisher or platform store page, and choose the one that matches your preferred race structure, player count and hardware.

Why CrossWorlds is a distinctive reference point

Travel Rings change the course during a race

SEGA describes Travel Rings as portals into CrossWorlds. A standard event runs for three laps: the opening lap takes place on the original track, a Travel Ring sends the field to a different world for lap two, and lap three returns to the starting course. The route is not simply reused. Shortcuts, obstacles, Ring placements, item locations and possible Frenzy gates can change when the racers return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That structure is more specific than a game merely having branching roads or several track themes. A close substitute should create meaningful decisions during the same event: learn the first layout, adapt to a transformed middle lap, then remember how the final version differs from lap one. When comparing another game, ask whether routes actually change while you race or whether the variety comes only from selecting a different track between races.

#1 Best Overall
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Amazon Exclusive Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • READY, SET, WARP! Race across 24 tracks and warp to 15 CrossWorlds with Travel Rings, a unique gameplay mechanic that transports the iconic characters from the Sonic and SEGA universes into new dimensions. Use unpredictability to your advantage as you change the landscape of each race!
  • RACE WITH THE BEST! Choose from 23 iconic Sonic characters, the largest roster of any Sonic racing game!
  • MAKE IT YOURS: Mix and match between 45 unique original vehicles and 70 different gadgets to trick out your ride, level up your kart, and create the ultimate machine to match your racing style.
  • GAIN THE ADVANTAGE WITH POWERFUL ITEMS! Dominate your opponents with 23 different items including returning favorites and all-new items like the Monster Truck!
  • MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY: Gather with friends and play local split-screen in Grand Prix and the new party mode Race Park, compete against a community of players from around the world with up to 12 players online in World Match, or test your driving skills in Time Trials.

SEGA called Travel Rings “the largest feature in the game” in its February 13, 2025 announcement. That wording explains why a large track count alone is not enough for a direct comparison. The useful question is not “How many tracks are there?” but “How much does one race ask me to relearn?”

A large tuning and item system

Nintendo UK’s product listing gives CrossWorlds’ headline figures as 24 tracks, 15 CrossWorlds, 23 Sonic characters, 45 vehicles, 70 gadgets and 23 items. These are publisher-provided product figures, not an independent measurement of how much variety each item or gadget creates in play.

The 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets matter because customization is not a cosmetic footnote in the game’s appeal. A comparison should look for the number of builds, whether parts alter acceleration, handling, speed or defensive ability, and whether a setup is useful only on one track type or remains viable across changing routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not read those numbers as a promise that every option is equally meaningful. A catalogue can be broad while a small group of builds dominates. Conversely, a rival with fewer parts may offer clearer trade-offs. Try to establish whether changing a component produces a noticeable difference in steering, recovery, top speed or protection, and whether the game gives you a practice or time-trial environment in which to test it.

Solo, local and online options

The listed modes are Grand Prix, Race Park, World Match and Time Trials. The Nintendo UK listing describes single-system play for one to four players, local wireless for two to eight, and online World Match for up to 12 players. SEGA’s own site also lists online play for up to 12 and Nintendo Switch local communication for up to eight. Exact support can vary by platform, so check the mode description for the version you intend to buy.

This range makes CrossWorlds a useful baseline for party-focused comparisons. A game that looks similar but lacks split-screen, local wireless or a lobby size suitable for your group may be a poor replacement even if its tracks are excellent. Also distinguish a private room from a public matchmaking queue: a 12-player headline does not by itself confirm friend invites, team races or the ability to reserve every slot for people you know.

What the independent review adds

PC Gamer reviewer Mollie Taylor wrote, “I absolutely loved CrossWorlds’ tracks,” specifically praising off-road routes, verticality and less obvious shortcuts. The review also reports online errors that interrupted races and criticizes item balance, including an incentive to hold powerful items instead of using them immediately. Those are that reviewer’s observations at review time, not proof that every player currently encounters the same problems. Check current platform and service conditions before treating online reliability or balance as settled.

How to define “similar” before choosing another game

1. Decide whether route transformation is essential

For some players, the Travel Ring sequence is the whole reason to seek a similar game. Put games into three practical groups:

  • Transforming-course match: the track itself changes during one race, with new geometry or hazards.
  • Branching-course match: races offer alternate paths, but the world does not necessarily transform between laps.
  • Theme-and-track match: variety comes mainly from choosing different courses before the race.

Only the first group directly reproduces CrossWorlds’ signature rhythm. If a candidate belongs to the second or third group, it may still be enjoyable, but it should not be sold as an equivalent to Travel Rings.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Standard Edition - Nintendo Switch

Ask a more detailed follow-up: does the alternate route affect every racer, or is it an optional shortcut; does it appear on a predictable lap, or react to race conditions; and do hazards and item placements change along with the scenery? Those distinctions determine whether you are getting a genuine mid-race reset or simply a scenic detour.

2. Separate tuning depth from cosmetic choice

Ask four questions about every candidate:

  • How many vehicles or chassis are available?
  • Are parts or abilities unlocked, purchased, drafted or fixed to a character?
  • Do changes affect measurable handling, speed, acceleration or defense?
  • Can a build be adapted quickly when a track changes?

CrossWorlds lists 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets, so a game with fewer selectable pieces may still suit you if each choice has a clearer strategic effect. Conversely, a long inventory is not automatically deep if most options feel interchangeable.

Record whether the game separates character choice from vehicle choice. That matters when a group wants to play the same favourite character with different driving styles. Also check whether parts are available immediately, gated behind progression or tied to a particular edition. A locked catalogue can make a supposedly flexible racer feel narrow during the first sessions.

3. Identify your tolerance for item chaos

CrossWorlds lists 23 items, and the reviewer’s criticism highlights an important distinction: quantity is not the same as good balance. Competitive players should check whether strong items can be stored indefinitely, whether trailing racers receive meaningful help, and whether defensive options protect a leader too reliably. Party players may prefer volatility and surprise, even when the same mechanics frustrate serious time-trial or ranked racers.

Look for adjustable item rules, separate competitive and casual playlists, or a no-items option if those are documented for the game you are considering. Do not assume such toggles exist. In a comparison, note how often items interrupt driving, whether a miss still has a tactical use, and whether the final lap becomes a queue of unavoidable attacks. These practical details matter more than an impressive item-count headline.

4. Match the multiplayer format to your group

Use this checklist before buying:

  • Couch play: confirm split-screen player count on one system.
  • Local wireless: check whether each player needs a separate copy and which hardware generations are supported.
  • Online parties: look for private rooms, friend invites and team options rather than assuming a public race lobby supports them.
  • Competitive online: verify rankings, matchmaking rules, connection requirements and whether the mode remains populated in your region.

CrossWorlds’ published ceiling is 12 online players, four on one system and eight through Nintendo Switch local communication. Those numbers are useful comparison points, but they do not guarantee identical support on every platform.

Before choosing a party game, count the hardware as well as the people. Four players on one console is a different proposition from eight players using local communication, because the latter may require multiple systems, copies and displays. Confirm those requirements in the platform listing instead of relying on a trailer or a retailer’s abbreviated bullet points.

5. Filter by hardware and physical availability first

SEGA lists physical and digital formats for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. It lists digital-only formats for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games. Store listings and physical editions are regional, so confirm your country’s storefront and whether a disc or cartridge exists before relying on a retailer listing.

If you are searching for a boxed copy, a phrase such as “Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Nintendo Switch game” can identify the relevant product, but it does not prove that a listing is in stock, legitimate or sold in your country. Check the publisher’s regional page and the platform store, then compare the edition name, included content and age rating. A physical standard edition is listed in selected Asian markets, so availability elsewhere should not be assumed.

Games to put on your shortlist

The following names are sensible starting points for a CrossWorlds fan, but the verified feature pages in hand do not establish a current, feature-by-feature comparison for them. Treat each as a candidate to investigate, not as a proven winner. Open the publisher’s current page for your platform and apply the checklist above.

Mario Kart World

Start here if you want to compare CrossWorlds with another major console kart-racing release. Verify whether its current course structure, player counts, local modes and online rules match what your group needs. Pay particular attention to whether any route changes happen during a race, because a broad track roster alone does not reproduce Travel Rings.

For a fair test, play several consecutive races rather than one showcase course. Note whether the game asks you to memorise changing geometry, whether shortcuts reward risk, and whether its handling model feels more technical or more forgiving than CrossWorlds. Those observations answer the “which should I get?” question better than a generic franchise reputation.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled

Put this on the list if technical driving, shortcuts and time-trial practice are more important to you than a transforming-world gimmick. Confirm the presently supported platforms, online functionality and local player options for your hardware. Do not assume that a remembered feature from an earlier release or update is still available in the edition you can buy.

Use the same test for tuning and items: can you change your setup, and do items reward precise driving or mainly overturn a race? If your favourite CrossWorlds moments come from finding an off-road line or mastering vertical sections, compare the learning curve and shortcut clarity directly instead of counting characters.

Disney Speedstorm

Consider this candidate if character-driven presentation and recurring online events appeal to you. Before purchasing, check the live product page for the current progression model, available modes, platform support and any required online service. Compare its customization and item systems with CrossWorlds’ 45 vehicles, 70 gadgets and 23 items rather than judging by character count alone.

Progression and monetization deserve their own check. Determine what is included in the base download or edition, which content is earned, and whether an event schedule affects access to modes or characters. A game can be a good free or low-cost trial while still being a poor fit if you want a fixed, immediately complete local party package.

How to evaluate any other kart racer

For a title not listed above, record the answers in a simple comparison sheet:

Axis CrossWorlds reference What to verify in the other game
Course design Travel Ring sends racers to a transformed world for lap two; lap three returns with altered routes and hazards. Does the track change during a race, branch, or merely offer separate courses?
Customization 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets listed by Nintendo UK. Number of meaningful builds; handling, speed, acceleration and defense effects.
Items 23 items listed; balance concerns were raised in one PC Gamer review. Item count, comeback strength, storage rules and competitive balance.
Local play One to four players on one system; two to eight by local wireless, according to Nintendo UK. Split-screen limit, local-wireless support and hardware requirements.
Online play World Match supports up to 12 players in the Nintendo UK listing; SEGA also lists up to 12. Maximum lobby size, private rooms, rankings, matchmaking and current service health.
Platforms Switch and Switch 2 physical/digital; PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games digital listings. Exact edition, region, cross-play and physical availability.
Purchase model Base game, original Season Pass and Season Pass Two are sold in different combinations. What the standard, deluxe and pass bundles include, plus delivery dates for promised content.

Where a rival’s value is not documented on the publisher page you can access, mark it “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an old review or a retailer’s marketing copy. Feature lists also change, so write down the date you checked and revisit the page if you are buying after a major update.

Choose by the kind of player you are

If you want constant discovery

Make transforming or branching routes your first filter. CrossWorlds rewards learning a course, then reacting when the Travel Ring changes it. A game with visually different tracks but no in-race route change may feel less surprising even if it has a larger total track list.

If you tune vehicles more than you collect characters

Prioritize systems that expose real trade-offs. CrossWorlds’ 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets provide a substantial starting point, but the key question is whether you can build for acceleration, top speed, handling or defense and feel the consequence immediately. Look for a practice or time-trial mode that lets you test a setup without item interference.

If you mainly play with friends in the same room

Check the one-system limit first, then local wireless. CrossWorlds’ published figures support up to four on one system and up to eight through Nintendo Switch local communication. A candidate with a lower split-screen limit may still work if your group uses multiple consoles, but that changes the cost and setup.

Ask whether local play includes the full course and item selection. Some games reserve certain events for solo or online modes; if the product page is unclear, look for a mode-by-mode manual or support entry. This is especially important when buying a physical copy as a shared party purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ranked or serious online racing is the priority

Do not infer competitive quality from a 12-player lobby alone. Confirm whether rankings, matchmaking and private-room rules fit your goals, and read recent platform reports for connection problems. The PC Gamer review’s interrupted races and item-balance complaints are reminders to check current conditions rather than relying on launch impressions.

Separate a connection problem from a design disagreement. A stable service can still have item rules you dislike, while a well-balanced ruleset can feel unfair if races are interrupted. Check both the current service status and recent player reports, and make sure your intended platform uses the same online build and feature set as the reviews you read.

Buying CrossWorlds and checking the extra content

SEGA’s purchase guide distinguishes the original Season Pass from Season Pass Two. The base-game-plus-Season-Pass-Two bundle does not include the original pass. The Digital Deluxe bundle includes the original pass but not Season Pass Two. SEGA says Season Pass Two content is scheduled in six drops through the end of March 2028.

That is an easy place to overpay. Do not assume that the newest-sounding bundle contains every earlier add-on, and do not compare a deluxe price with a standard-edition price without listing the included passes. If you only want the base racing experience, calculate the cost of the standard game. If you want every announced drop, check whether buying both passes separately is cheaper in your region; no universal price should be assumed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because bundle contents and schedules can change, read the live purchase guide for your region immediately before checkout. Also confirm whether you are buying the Switch, Switch 2, console-download or PC edition; physical availability is not universal, and a store page may describe a different package from the one sold in another country.

A quick decision process

  1. Pick your non-negotiable: transforming routes, deep tuning, couch play or competitive online.
  2. Filter by platform: remove games unavailable on your console or PC, then check physical versus digital format if that matters.
  3. Verify the exact mode: read the publisher listing for player limits, local wireless, private rooms and rankings.
  4. Check current service notes: online features and connection quality can change after launch.
  5. Price the complete package: compare the base edition, required copies for local play and any passes or paid drops you actually want.
  6. Compare the trade-off: decide whether you want a direct mechanical match to Travel Rings or a different kart racer that excels in another area.

That process produces a more honest answer than declaring one universal “best” game. CrossWorlds combines a rare mid-race course transformation with broad customization and large multiplayer options; another title may beat it for a particular preference without matching all three.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest thing to Travel Rings in another kart racer?

Look for a game where the course geometry, hazards or routes change during the same race. Branching shortcuts or a large selection of separate tracks can be fun, but they are not a direct equivalent to CrossWorlds’ first-lap, transformed-second-lap and altered-final-lap structure.

How many players does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds support?

Nintendo UK’s listing gives one to four players on a single system, two to eight through local wireless and up to 12 in online World Match. SEGA also lists online play for up to 12 and Nintendo Switch local communication for up to eight. Confirm the exact figures for your platform and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does CrossWorlds have substantial customization?

Its Nintendo UK product listing names 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets. Those are headline inventory figures, so test how strongly parts change handling, speed, acceleration or defense rather than assuming every option is equally strategic.

Is CrossWorlds suitable for competitive online racing?

It offers online races for up to 12 players, but PC Gamer reviewer Mollie Taylor reported interrupted online races and criticized item balance at review time. Check current service conditions, rankings, matchmaking and recent platform reports before treating it as a dependable competitive choice.

Which CrossWorlds bundle includes every Season Pass?

None of the combinations described by SEGA does so automatically. The base-game-plus-Season-Pass-Two bundle excludes the original pass, while Digital Deluxe includes the original pass but not Season Pass Two. Check the regional purchase guide and price both passes if you want all announced content.

Is there a physical Nintendo Switch edition?

SEGA lists physical and digital formats for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with a physical standard edition identified in selected Asian markets. Availability is regional, so verify the local store or retailer rather than assuming a cartridge is sold everywhere.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose a rival with more tracks or more characters?

Neither number answers the key compatibility question. If you love CrossWorlds for Travel Rings, prioritize in-race transformation and route experimentation. If you prefer tuning, compare meaningful vehicle and part effects; if you play socially, compare local and online player limits first.

What should I check before buying a different kart racer?

Confirm the exact platform and edition, physical or digital format, split-screen and local-wireless limits, private-room and ranking support, item rules, customization depth, current online service condition and the full cost of passes or required copies.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose your next kart racer by the feature you actually miss. CrossWorlds’ Travel Rings set a demanding standard for mid-race route changes, while its 45 vehicles, 70 gadgets, 23 items and up-to-12-player online mode define separate comparison points. Verify current platform, mode and bundle details before buying, and treat every rival as a preference-based alternative rather than an automatic upgrade.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
