The Best James Bond Comics to Read If You Enjoy Spy Fiction

The best James Bond comic for you depends on the kind of spy fiction you want: a contemporary original mission, a faithful adaptation of an Ian Fleming novel, or a time capsule from the classic newspaper strips. Start with VARGR for a new, story-led Bond adventure; choose James Bond: Casino Royale for Fleming’s literary plot in graphic-novel form; or begin with the collected SPECTRE and Dr. No strips for historic Bond comics. Those are different reading experiences, not entries in a single objective ranking.

The guide below uses the official James Bond Library, publisher catalogs and edition listings. It does not claim personal reading results or a consensus “best” list; instead, it matches each collection to a reader’s preferred era, format and approach to espionage fiction.

Choose your Bond comics by the experience you want

Bond comics fall into three broad categories. Modern original comics create new missions in the comics medium. Fleming adaptations translate a specific novel into sequential art. Newspaper-strip collections preserve syndicated stories that originally appeared in a daily or Sunday format decades ago.

What you want to read Best entry point What you are getting Era and format
A new, contemporary spy plot VARGR A modern original Bond story collected by Dynamite Modern comic series and collected edition; exact edition availability varies
Fleming’s plot in graphic-novel form James Bond: Casino Royale Van Jensen adaptation with Dennis Calero art Graphic novel, published in 2018
A second literary adaptation James Bond: Live and Let Die Van Jensen adaptation with Kewber Baal art Graphic novel, published in 2020
Classic Bond comic-strip history James Bond: SPECTRE: Complete Comic Strip Collection or The Complete James Bond: Dr. No Archival newspaper strips with work by the original strip writers and artists Collected reprints of strips from the late 1950s and 1960s

That distinction matters when you compare editions. A modern collected comic is not interchangeable with a newspaper-strip archive, and an adaptation is not a new continuity adventure. Decide which of those three categories appeals to you before choosing a volume.

Best modern original starting point: VARGR

Why it suits readers who want a new mission

If your priority is a straightforward espionage thriller rather than a retelling of a familiar novel, begin with a collected modern original such as VARGR. Dynamite’s official catalog identifies an ongoing Bond comics line and lists collected editions, making it the clearest publisher-side starting point for readers who want stories created for comics rather than adapted from Fleming.

A modern original lets the comic use pacing, page turns and visual action without first matching the structure of a known book. That makes this route useful for someone who enjoys spy fiction but does not need the source novel beside the comic. It is also the least historical option in this guide: you are approaching Bond as a current comics character, not as a document of 1950s newspaper production.

How to buy the right edition

Publisher catalogs can contain individual issues, collected paperbacks, hardcovers and digital listings at the same time. Check that the listing you select is a collected edition of the story you want, and verify the format, page count and contents with the seller or library record. The catalog confirms the line and its collections, but it does not guarantee that every edition is in stock or offered in every country.

The modern line is still changing

On October 10, 2026, GamesRadar reported that Grant Morrison will write a new Bond comic series in partnership with IDW and Ian Fleming Publications. The report is an announcement, not evidence that issues have shipped or that a release schedule is fixed. IDW CEO Davidi Jonas described the intended approach this way: “Our goal isn’t to provide supplemental and optional stories. We strive to take radical swings which celebrate and stay true to the very qualities that make the franchise special while also reinventing it for the modern comic book landscape.” Treat that project as a future addition to the modern-original category; do not confuse an announced series with a currently available collection.

Best Fleming adaptation: James Bond: Casino Royale

What the edition is

The official James Bond Library records James Bond: Casino Royale as a graphic-novel adaptation by Van Jensen, illustrated by Dennis Calero. Simon & Schuster lists Dynamite Entertainment as publisher and gives April 24, 2018, as the publication date. This is the most direct choice for a reader who wants Fleming’s first Bond novel interpreted through modern sequential art.

Because it adapts a named novel, the central appeal is literary comparison: you can read Fleming’s plot, then see how the adaptation handles dialogue, suspense and visual transitions. The book should be approached as an adaptation rather than as an unrelated new assignment for Bond. Its value is the meeting point between a canonical spy story and a contemporary graphic-novel presentation.

Who should start here

  • Readers who want a self-contained introduction to Fleming’s Bond through comics.
  • Readers who prefer a modern graphic-novel package to a long run of newspaper strips.
  • Readers comparing how prose espionage is converted into panels, captions and visual action.

The official listing establishes the creators and 2018 publication, but it does not establish current retailer stock, a universal price or a single format in every market. Confirm whether a listing is a physical collected book or a digital edition before ordering.

Another Fleming route: James Bond: Live and Let Die

What makes it different

The official library lists James Bond: Live and Let Die as a 2020 graphic-novel adaptation credited to Van Jensen, with art by Kewber Baal. It gives you a second way to explore Fleming through comics after, or instead of, Casino Royale.

Choosing between the two adaptations is primarily a matter of which novel you want to revisit and which visual interpretation appeals to you. The available catalog information supports the adaptation status, creators and publication year; it does not support a definitive quality ranking between the books. If you are collecting Fleming adaptations, these volumes belong together conceptually, but each adapts a separate novel and can be read independently.

Adaptation expectations

An adaptation compresses or rearranges prose to fit a graphic-novel page count. Read it as an interpretation, not as a replacement for every sentence of Fleming’s text. If fidelity to the novel’s exact wording is your priority, use the original book as the primary text and the comic as a visual companion.

Best classic newspaper-strip starting points

Bond’s earliest comics history is preserved in collected newspaper strips. These books are archival reprints, so their storytelling rhythm, panel design and production context differ from a modern original graphic novel. They are the right choice when you want to see how Bond was serialized for newspaper readers and how the strip’s artists shaped his visual identity.

James Bond: SPECTRE: Complete Comic Strip Collection

The official library lists this 2015 collection with art by John McLusky and Yaroslav Horak. Its contents include Thunderball, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me. That mixture makes it a broad archival sampler: several Fleming stories appear in one volume, rendered by the artists associated with the newspaper strip.

Choose SPECTRE if you want a substantial collection organized around multiple high-profile Bond stories and are comfortable with an older serialized format. The title identifies a collection; it should not be mistaken for a modern original story about the organization alone.

The Complete James Bond: Dr. No – The Classic Comic Strip Collection 1958–60

The official library lists this 2016 collection as adapted by Anthony Hern, Henry Gammidge and Peter O’Donnell, with art by John McLusky and Yaroslav Horak. The date range in the title signals its archival scope. It is a strong first purchase for readers who want to begin at the newspaper-strip era’s foundations and follow a single named adventure in a period collection.

The Complete James Bond: Goldfinger

Listed by the official library in 2017, this collection credits Henry Gammidge and Jim Lawrence for the adaptation and John McLusky and Yaroslav Horak for the art. It is another focused archival volume rather than a survey of unrelated modern stories. Select it when Goldfinger is the Fleming plot you most want to see in strip form.

The Complete James Bond: Octopussy

Also listed in 2017, The Complete James Bond: Octopussy credits Jim Lawrence as adapter and Yaroslav Horak as artist. It offers a narrower, story-specific entry into the classic strip material and is useful for readers building a collection title by title.

The 2026 James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection

The official library lists a 2026 James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection covering the first three years of Bond newspaper strips, from July 1958 through May 1961. The listed contents include Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever, From Russia with Love, Dr. No and Goldfinger.

This is the broadest chronological starting point described in the catalog: rather than selecting one story, you get the opening three-year span and several novel adaptations in strip form. It is especially suitable for readers interested in comics history, serialization and the development of Bond’s newspaper presence.

Availability and format should be confirmed before purchase. A catalog listing does not establish stock, regional release timing, binding, price or whether a particular seller’s entry is a physical book, digital edition or another listing. If you want a specific format, verify it in the seller’s details rather than relying on the title alone.

The table shows why a single “best” answer would be misleading. The modern original is designed for a new plot, the graphic novels are adaptations, and the strip books are historical reprints. Your preferred category is a more useful decision rule than an unsupported quality hierarchy.

Reading paths that avoid buying the wrong kind of book

Path 1: You want one contemporary Bond comic

  1. Start with a collected modern original such as VARGR in the Dynamite catalog.
  2. Confirm that the listing is a complete collection, not an individual issue or a digital-only entry.
  3. If you enjoy the modern approach, follow Dynamite’s catalog for other collected Bond story lines.

Path 2: You want Fleming first, comics second

  1. Choose James Bond: Casino Royale for the 2018 adaptation by Van Jensen and Dennis Calero.
  2. Read Fleming’s novel separately if you want to compare prose structure with the graphic adaptation.
  3. Add James Bond: Live and Let Die, the 2020 adaptation by Van Jensen and Kewber Baal, for another novel-based volume.

Path 3: You want Bond comics history

  1. Begin with the 2026 Signature Comic Strip Collection if you want the first three years in chronological scope, subject to confirming its format and availability.
  2. Choose Dr. No for an early 1958–60 collection centered on one story.
  3. Add SPECTRE, Goldfinger or Octopussy for additional archival stories and creators.

Path 4: You collect by format

For a modern shelf, look for collected graphic novels from the publisher catalog. For archival material, look for complete comic-strip collections rather than individual newspaper episodes. For either category, compare hardcover, paperback and digital labels because the same title can appear in more than one form.

What the catalogs do—and do not—tell you

The official James Bond Library establishes titles, credited creators, story contents and listed years for the editions above. Dynamite’s catalog establishes publisher-side context for the modern comics line and collected editions. Penguin Random House also maintains a James Bond Omnibus page describing collected strip material. These records are useful for identifying the right book, but they are not guarantees of current stock, price or identical formats across countries.

Catalog information also cannot prove that one comic is universally better drawn, more faithful or more exciting than another. Those judgments depend on whether you value contemporary pacing, Fleming fidelity, period artwork or the experience of reading a serialized strip. Treat recommendations here as preference-based matches, not test results or a consensus ranking.

Bottom line

Pick VARGR for a new modern spy plot, Casino Royale for Fleming adapted by Van Jensen and Dennis Calero, or the classic collections—especially SPECTRE and Dr. No—for newspaper-strip history. Add Live and Let Die, Goldfinger or Octopussy when you want another adaptation or archival volume, and verify the exact edition and availability before buying.
