Your iPhone holds passwords, payment cards, private messages, photos, location history, health data, and access to your Apple Account. Apple builds strong privacy and security tools into iOS, but many of the most useful protections still depend on which settings you enable, review, or tighten.
This 2025 guide focuses on practical iPhone settings that can reduce tracking, limit unnecessary app access, protect your accounts, and make your personal data harder to misuse. You’ll see the key places to check in Settings, including sign-in protection, app permissions, location sharing, Safari privacy, Mail protection, sensitive content controls, Safety Check, Lockdown Mode, and Stolen Device Protection.

Lock Down Your iPhone Sign-In and Apple Account
Your passcode and Apple Account are the front door to everything on your iPhone: iCloud photos, backups, saved passwords, payment cards, Find My, Messages, and device recovery. Start in Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and make sure you are not using a short, easy-to-guess code such as a birthday, repeated digits, or a simple pattern. Tap Change Passcode, then Passcode Options, and choose Custom Alphanumeric Code for the strongest protection, or at minimum use a longer custom numeric code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep Face ID or Touch ID enabled for convenience, but treat the passcode as the real security layer. Review what is available when the phone is locked under Allow Access When Locked. For tighter privacy, consider turning off access to Control Center, Wallet, Return Missed Calls, USB Accessories, and any lock screen features you do not use. Leaving USB Accessories off helps prevent wired access when the iPhone has been locked for more than an hour.

Next, secure your Apple Account from Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security. Confirm that Two-Factor Authentication is enabled, your trusted phone numbers are current, and your account email addresses are ones you still control. Remove old numbers, abandoned email addresses, and unknown devices from Settings > [your name] by scrolling through the device list, tapping anything unfamiliar, and choosing Remove from Account where appropriate.
Account protections worth enabling
- Account Recovery Contact: Go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery and add a trusted person who can help you regain access if you are locked out.
- Recovery Key: In the same recovery area, advanced users can enable a Recovery Key. Store it offline in a secure place, because losing it can make account recovery much harder.
- Security Keys: For higher-risk accounts, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Security Keys to add hardware security keys for Apple Account sign-ins.
- Legacy Contact: Under Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Legacy Contact, choose someone who can access selected account data after your death.
If you use iCloud, review Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection. When enabled, end-to-end encryption expands to more iCloud categories, including device backups, Photos, s, and iCloud Drive. Before turning it on, set up account recovery carefully, since Apple will not be able to recover the protected data for you if you lose access.
Finally, check your saved passwords in Settings > Passwords. Use Security Recommendations to find reused, weak, or compromised passwords, and replace them with strong unique ones. Where available, switch accounts to passkeys, which reduce the risk of phishing because they are tied to your device and biometric or passcode verification rather than a password you can accidentally give away.
Limit App Tracking, Permissions, and Data Access
Apps can collect more than you may realize: advertising identifiers, Bluetooth access, microphone input, camera access, contacts, photos, local network visibility, motion data, and background activity. In 2025, one of the most effective iPhone privacy checks is still a careful review of what each app is allowed to see. Start in Settings > Privacy & Security, then work through the major categories rather than assuming old permissions still make sense.
Turn off cross-app tracking requests
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable Allow Apps to Request to Track. This blocks apps from asking to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites using Apple’s App Tracking Transparency system. If the switch is already off, review the app list on the same screen and make sure no apps have been granted tracking permission in the past.
Review sensitive permissions app by app
Open Settings > Privacy & Security and check categories such as Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Photos, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, Local Network, Motion & Fitness, and Media & Apple Music. Remove access for anything that does not match the app’s purpose. A flashlight app does not need contacts. A shopping app usually does not need Bluetooth. A game rarely needs microphone access.
- Camera and Microphone: Allow only apps you actively use for calls, scanning, recording, or content creation.
- Photos: Prefer Limited Access instead of full library access when an app only needs selected images.
- Contacts: Avoid granting full access unless the app genuinely needs to find or manage people you know.
- Bluetooth: Keep it for headphones, wearables, car apps, and smart-home accessories; deny it for apps that use it only for proximity tracking.
- Local Network: Allow it for printers, media servers, smart TVs, and home devices; deny it for unrelated apps.
For photos, visit Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos, tap each app, and choose None, Limited Access, or Full Access. Limited access is especially useful for social media, marketplace, dating, and document apps because you can share only the images you select. If you previously gave an app full access, switch it to limited and update the selected items when needed.

Check background activity and data use
Privacy is not only about permissions; it is also about when apps can run and transmit data. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable it for apps that do not need live updates. Messaging, navigation, weather, and password manager apps may benefit from background refresh, but many retail, news, games, and social apps work fine without it. You can also set Background App Refresh to Wi-Fi only, which reduces mobile data use and limits constant background activity while away from trusted networks.
Next, open Settings > Cellular and scroll through the app list. Turn off cellular data for apps that should only work on Wi-Fi, such as cloud backup tools, video apps, or rarely used services. This does not block the app entirely, but it reduces always-available data access when you are out of the house. While you are there, review unusual high data usage; it can reveal apps that sync, preload, track, or upload more often than expected.
Use App Privacy Report to spot overreach
Apple’s App Privacy Report shows how apps use permissions and contact domains in the background. Enable or review it at Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. After a few days, check which apps accessed your location, photos, camera, microphone, contacts, or network domains. If an app repeatedly accesses sensitive data without a clear purpose, remove its permission, adjust its in-app privacy settings, or delete it entirely.
Strengthen Location Privacy Settings
Your iPhone’s location controls are more granular than many people realize, and reviewing them can significantly reduce background tracking. Start at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. If you rarely use location-based features, you can turn Location Services off entirely, but most people will get better results by leaving it on and tightening app-by-app access.
Open each app in the Location Services list and change access to the least permissive option that still lets the app work. For weather, maps, ride-hailing, delivery, banking, travel, and fitness apps, While Using the App is usually enough. Avoid Always unless the app genuinely needs background location, such as a trusted family safety app, vehicle tracker, or automation that depends on geofencing. For apps that only need an approximate area, turn off Precise Location; this is often appropriate for weather, local news, shopping, streaming, and social apps.
Location settings worth checking
- Ask Next Time Or When I Share: Use this for apps you do not fully trust or only use occasionally. iOS will prompt you before granting access again.
- Precise Location: Disable it when an app only needs your general city or neighborhood instead of your exact position.
- Location alerts: If iOS warns that an app has used your location in the background, review whether that access is still justified.
- Find My: Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My and review who can see your location under Share My Location.
Next, scroll to the bottom of Location Services and open System Services. Apple separates system-level location features from app permissions, and several of these can be disabled without affecting core phone use. Many users can turn off Location-Based Apple Ads, Location-Based Suggestions, and iPhone Analytics. If you do not use HomeKit automations, location-based shortcuts, or region-specific alerts, review those toggles as well before leaving them enabled.
Still under System Services, open Significant Locations. This feature stores places you frequently visit, such as home, work, and routine stops, to support personalized services. It is end-to-end encrypted, but it is still sensitive location history. If you do not want your iPhone maintaining this pattern data, turn Significant Locations off and clear existing history. You may need Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to view or change this setting.

Finally, review sharing outside the Location Services menu. In Find My, remove old contacts who no longer need access to your live location. In Messages, open conversations where you may have shared location and check whether sharing is still active. If you use Family Sharing, go to Settings > Family > Location Sharing and confirm that only the right family members can see where your device is. Location privacy is not a one-time switch; it is a permission set worth auditing after installing new apps, changing jobs, ending relationships, or traveling with a higher privacy risk.

Harden Safari, Mail, and Network Privacy
Your web browser, email app, and network connections can reveal a lot about you: the sites you visit, your approximate location, your device identifiers, and whether you opened a marketing email. On iPhone, Apple groups many of the strongest protections under Safari, Mail, iCloud, Wi-Fi, and VPN settings. Review these areas together, because browser privacy is much stronger when your network settings are not leaking extra data.
Turn on Safari privacy protections
Go to Settings > Apps > Safari and review the privacy options. Keep Prevent Cross-Site Tracking enabled to reduce advertiser tracking across websites. Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning so Safari can warn you before you visit known phishing or scam pages. Under Advanced, review website data periodically via Website Data and remove data from sites you no longer use.
If you use iCloud+, enable Private Relay by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay. Private Relay helps hide your IP address and browsing activity in Safari from network providers and websites. You can choose Maintain General Location for local results or Use Country and Time Zone for broader location masking. Some work, school, or carrier networks may block or limit Private Relay, so check this setting again after changing networks.
Reduce tracking in Mail
Marketing emails often contain invisible tracking pixels that can report when you opened a message and sometimes infer your location from your IP address. To limit this, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Privacy Protection and enable Protect Mail Activity. This routes remote email content through Apple’s privacy service and hides your IP address from senders. If you prefer more manual control, disable automatic remote content loading and only load images for senders you trust.
- Use Hide My Email: If you have iCloud+, create unique relay addresses for newsletters, shopping sites, and apps from Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Hide My Email.
- Separate risky sign-ups: Use disposable or relay addresses for sites that do not need your primary email.
- Check forwarding: Remove old Hide My Email aliases you no longer recognize or use.
Secure Wi-Fi, DNS, and network behavior
Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the info button next to your current network, and confirm that Private Wi-Fi Address is enabled. This gives your iPhone a different network address on each Wi-Fi network, making it harder for shops, airports, hotels, and other networks to recognize your device over time. Also review Limit IP Address Tracking where available, especially on networks you do not control.
Be selective with public Wi-Fi. If a network asks you to install a profile, certificate, or “security app” just to browse, avoid it unless it is from your employer, school, or a provider you fully trust. Installed profiles can change network routing, certificates, DNS, or device management behavior. Check for unknown profiles at Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and remove anything you do not recognize.

Protect Messages, Photos, Contacts, and Sensitive Content
Your iPhone holds more than passwords and payment cards: message threads, private photos, contact lists, health-related screenshots, and one-time codes can reveal a lot about you. Start by tightening what appears on the Lock Screen. Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. Then review sensitive apps such as Messages, Mail, WhatsApp, Signal, banking apps, and delivery apps under Settings > Notifications. For each app, you can turn off Lock Screen, Notification Center, or Banners so private content is not visible to someone holding your phone.
For Messages, use the built-in filters and sharing controls. Open Settings > Apps > Messages and enable Filter Unknown Senders if you want texts from unknown numbers separated from your main inbox. Under Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You, disable automatic sharing for apps where you do not want links, photos, music, or articles from chats to surface. If you use iMessage heavily, also review Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages in iCloud. Syncing messages through iCloud is convenient across devices, but you should remove old devices from your Apple Account if they no longer belong to you.

Photos deserves a careful pass because many apps ask for broad library access when they only need one image. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos and change apps from Full Access to Limited Access where possible. When limited access is enabled, you choose exactly which images and videos an app can see. In the Photos app, use the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums for cleanup, and make sure biometric protection is active by checking Settings > Apps > Photos > Use Face ID if available on your iOS version. For extra privacy before sharing images, open a photo, tap Share, tap Options, and turn off Location to strip embedded location data from that share.
Contacts access should be treated as sensitive because your address book exposes other people, not just you. Visit Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts and remove access for apps that do not need your full contact list. On recent iOS versions, some apps may support limited contact sharing, letting you grant access to selected contacts instead of the entire address book. Do the same review for Calendars, Reminders, Bluetooth, Local Network, Microphone, and Camera, especially for social, shopping, and utility apps installed long ago.
Use built-in protections for private content
- Lock or hide apps: On supported iOS versions, touch and hold an app icon, choose Require Face ID, then select whether to lock or hide it. Hidden apps move to the Hidden folder in App Library and require authentication.
- Review Sensitive Content Warning: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Sensitive Content Warning and enable it to blur detected nude images and videos before you view them in supported Apple apps and system experiences.
- Check app privacy reports: Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report to see which apps accessed contacts, photos, camera, microphone, location, and network domains over time.
- Clean up shared albums: In Photos, review Albums > Shared Albums and remove people or turn off shared albums you no longer use.
Finally, reduce accidental exposure through search and suggestions. Go to Settings > Siri & Search, select sensitive apps, and disable options such as Show App in Search, Show Content in Search, and Show Suggestions from App. This keeps private messages, documents, photos, and app activity from appearing in Spotlight, Siri Suggestions, and other system surfaces when someone else is looking at your screen.

iOS includes several high-impact protections designed for situations where ordinary privacy settings are not enough. Safety Check helps you quickly review what you are sharing with people and apps, Lockdown Mode sharply reduces attack surfaces for users at elevated risk, and Stolen Device Protection makes it harder for a thief to take over your Apple Account after stealing an unlocked iPhone. These settings are worth reviewing even if you never expect to need them.

If you are in a personal safety situation and need to cut off access immediately, Safety Check also includes Emergency Reset. This stops sharing with people and apps, lets you change your Apple Account password, and helps review emergency contacts. Apple includes a Quick Exit button in Safety Check so you can leave the screen quickly. For routine maintenance, use Manage Sharing & Access instead of Emergency Reset so you can make careful, targeted changes.

Enable Stolen Device Protection
Stolen Device Protection is one of the most useful security features to enable on modern iPhones. It adds extra barriers when your iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection, then turn it on. On supported iOS versions, choose Always for Require Security Delay if you want stronger protection even when you are at a familiar place.
With this feature enabled, sensitive actions such as viewing saved passwords, changing your Apple Account password, disabling Find My, changing Face ID, or resetting the device may require Face ID or Touch ID, and some changes require a one-hour security delay. This protects you against a common theft pattern: someone watches you enter your passcode, steals the phone, then tries to lock you out of your account before you can react.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Lockdown Mode only when the risk level calls for it
Lockdown Mode is built for people who may be targeted by sophisticated spyware or state-sponsored attacks, including journalists, activists, government workers, executives, and others handling sensitive information. To enable it, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, then follow the prompts and restart your iPhone.
- Messages: many attachment types are blocked, and some link previews are disabled.
- Web browsing: certain complex web technologies may be restricted unless you exclude trusted sites.
- FaceTime: calls from people you have not previously contacted may be blocked.
- Shared albums and invitations: some Apple services limit incoming requests and sharing features.
- Connections: wired connections to accessories or computers may be restricted when the iPhone is locked.
Most users do not need Lockdown Mode every day because it can make apps, websites, and communication features less convenient. If your risk changes, you can turn it off from the same menu. For everyone else, enabling Stolen Device Protection and periodically running Safety Check provides strong, practical protection without disrupting normal iPhone use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the first iPhone security settings I should change in 2025?
Start with Face ID or Touch ID, a strong six-digit or alphanumeric passcode, and two-factor authentication for your Apple Account. Then turn on Stolen Device Protection under Settings > Face ID & Passcode, review app permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security, and enable Find My iPhone in Settings > your name > Find My. These changes protect your device, Apple account, and personal data even if your iPhone is lost or stolen.
Should I allow apps to track me on my iPhone?
Most users should leave app tracking turned off unless they have a specific reason to allow it. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable “Allow Apps to Request to Track” to stop apps from asking to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites. This does not block all advertising, but it reduces cross-app profiling and limits access to your device’s advertising identifier.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I stop apps from using my precise location?
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, choose an app, and turn off “Precise Location” if the app only needs your general area. For many apps, “While Using the App” is safer than “Always,” and some apps can be set to “Never.” Navigation, ride-sharing, and delivery apps may need precise location while in use, but weather, shopping, and social apps often do not.
What Safari privacy settings should I enable on iPhone?
In Settings > Safari, make sure “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking” is enabled and consider using “Hide IP Address” if available with your iCloud+ plan or Safari privacy settings. You can also set Safari to block pop-ups, warn about fraudulent websites, and clear history and website data when needed. For stronger privacy, review Safari extensions carefully and avoid installing content blockers or VPN apps from developers you do not trust.
When should I use Safety Check or Lockdown Mode on my iPhone?
Use Safety Check if you need to quickly review or stop sharing your location, photos, calendars, or account access with people and apps; it is available in Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Lockdown Mode is for users at elevated risk of targeted attacks, such as journalists, activists, executives, or people facing spyware threats. It can be enabled in Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, but it restricts some iPhone features to reduce attack surfaces.
Bottom Line
Your iPhone already has strong privacy and security tools built in, but they only work well if you review them regularly. Start with the biggest wins: enable Stolen Device Protection, use strong passcodes and two-factor authentication, limit app tracking and location access, and run a Safety Check if you’re concerned about unwanted sharing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet aside 10 minutes to walk through these settings after every major iOS update or when installing new apps. A few small changes can significantly reduce tracking, protect your Apple Account, and keep your personal data harder to access if your device is lost, stolen, or shared.
