The Best Interior Design Software for Planning a Home Remodel

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best interior design software depends on what you need to do first. Choose Planner 5D or HomeByMe for approachable 2D floor plans, furniture layouts and 3D visualization; choose RoomSketcher when you already have a blueprint, sketch or supported scan; choose SketchUp when you want a flexible 3D model with a separate 2D presentation workflow; and consider Chief Architect when your project needs more technical residential-design features such as dimensions, elevations and generated building elements.

These tools are for exploring and communicating a remodel. They are not automatically permit-ready or construction-ready document systems. Your model is only as reliable as the measurements you enter, and structural work, permits and build instructions still require qualified local professionals and approval from the relevant authority.

Quick answer: which remodel-planning tool fits your project?

Start by identifying your input and your desired output. If you are starting with an empty room and want to try furniture, finishes and layouts, a 2D-to-3D visual planner is usually the shortest path. If you have an existing plan, use software that can import or digitize it so you do not redraw the house inaccurately. If you need elevations, detailed dimensions or automatically generated building components, expect a more involved residential-design workflow rather than a simple decorating app.

Choose software from the information you already have

Starting with measurements and a blank plan

If you have room dimensions but no usable drawing, Planner 5D and HomeByMe describe workflows that let you create a plan and then furnish it. Their 2D views help you check wall positions, doors and circulation before you spend time on a 3D scene. This is useful for an early kitchen, living-room or bedroom layout when the main question is “Will everything fit?”

Starting with a blueprint, sketch or scan

RoomSketcher specifically describes starting from a blueprint, sketch, supported scan or a plan drawn from scratch. That makes it a practical candidate when an estate plan, builder drawing or your own paper sketch is the project’s starting point. Treat the imported or digitized drawing as a working model: verify critical dimensions on site before ordering cabinets, moving walls or placing plumbing and electrical work.

Starting with a design you need to explain to others

SketchUp describes a 3D modeling workflow paired with LayOut for 2D presentations and construction drawings. It can suit a homeowner who is willing to learn a broader modeling tool and needs to communicate a custom idea to a designer or contractor. The available description does not establish that it is easy for beginners, nor does it establish exact current prices or hardware requirements.

Starting with technical residential documentation

Chief Architect lists features such as automatic and manual dimensions, floor and space planning, elevations, automatically generated building elements and material lists. Those features are aimed at a deeper residential-design process than simple mood-board visualization. They may be appropriate when you are coordinating many rooms or need more formal drawings, but confirm that the edition you select and the documents it produces meet your local professional and permitting needs.

Planner 5D: approachable visual planning across devices

Planner 5D describes a straightforward loop: create a floor plan, furnish rooms, and switch between 2D and 3D views. That combination is useful when you need to test several arrangements quickly, compare furniture footprints or see how finishes might read in a room rather than merely sketching a top-down diagram.

When it is a good fit

  • You want to explore layouts without committing to a technical CAD-style workflow.
  • You work from more than one device; the vendor lists iOS, Android, Windows and macOS versions and says projects sync across devices.
  • You need both a measured-looking plan and a visual scene for discussing ideas with household members or a designer.

Important boundary

Planner 5D explicitly warns that the app does not replace professional measurements or construction documents. Device, app-version and plan differences can affect feature availability, so check the current version for your platform before relying on a particular export or catalog item.

HomeByMe: measured plans with a defined free starting point

HomeByMe’s feature description covers importing or creating a measured 2D plan and then viewing the interior in 3D. This makes it useful when you want the discipline of a floor plan but still need rendered views to judge furniture, finishes and sight lines.

Free-tier limits to check

The official offers page lists a free Starter tier with up to two projects and five full-HD images. Those are vendor-listed product limits, not industry standards, and plan names, prices and allowances are volatile. Verify the live offer before you begin a remodel that will require more rooms or more rendered images.

When it is a good fit

  • You want to create or import a measured plan before decorating.
  • You need a small number of polished images to compare options or show a contractor the intended look.
  • You are comfortable moving to a paid tier if the project exceeds two projects or five full-HD images.

RoomSketcher: a strong candidate when you already have source material

RoomSketcher describes several ways to begin: a blueprint, a sketch, a supported scan or a plan drawn from scratch. That flexibility matters because many remodels begin with an old estate-agent plan, a builder PDF or a hand-measured drawing rather than an empty digital canvas.

A reliable way to use an existing plan

  1. Collect the clearest plan or scan you have, and mark the date and source of every measurement.
  2. Import or digitize it in RoomSketcher, then check one or more known dimensions against the actual room.
  3. Add doors, windows and fixed elements before placing furniture.
  4. Duplicate the plan for each serious option instead of overwriting the original.
  5. Walk through the layouts in 2D and, where available, use the visual view to inspect clearances and sight lines.

The service describes a free tier with limited projects and features. It does not establish that its output is a permit set or a substitute for professional construction documents, so do not infer that from the plan-import workflow.

SketchUp: flexible 3D modeling with a 2D presentation stage

SketchUp’s official description centers on 3D modeling and LayOut for 2D presentations and construction drawings. This separation can be valuable when a remodel has unusual geometry, built-ins or custom millwork that is difficult to express with only pre-made room templates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect from the workflow

  • Build the room and its components as a 3D model.
  • Use the model library where an existing component saves time.
  • Prepare 2D views or sheets in LayOut for presenting the design.
  • Keep a dimensioned, verified record of the real building separate from decorative options.

The cited product information lists Windows and Mac availability but does not provide an independent beginner-usability test, current exact pricing or a hardware specification. Assess those items for your computer before choosing it for a time-sensitive project.

Chief Architect: deeper residential-design features

Chief Architect describes software for builders, remodelers, architects and interior designers. Its feature list includes floor and space planning, automatic and manual dimensions, elevations, automatically generated building elements and material lists.

When the extra depth is justified

Choose this direction when the remodel involves many coordinated rooms, repeated dimensional decisions, elevations or a materials schedule that would be cumbersome to maintain manually. A more technical feature set can reduce duplicated drafting, but it also requires more time to learn and more care in setting up the model correctly.

Check the documentation boundary

Confirm the current product edition, the export formats you need and whether your local building department or contractor accepts the resulting documents. A feature that generates a wall, roof or material list does not by itself make a drawing an approved permit set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2D plans and 3D views answer different questions

Use the 2D plan to answer measurable questions: does a door swing into a cabinet, is there a usable walkway, can an appliance be opened, and do fixtures fit without blocking one another? Use the 3D view to answer communication and visual questions: how will a sight line feel, do finishes work together, and does the proposed furniture make the room look crowded?

Planner 5D and HomeByMe explicitly describe both 2D and 3D workflows. RoomSketcher describes moving from a source plan into layout testing and remodel planning. SketchUp describes a model-to-LayOut process. Chief Architect describes dimensions and elevations in addition to planning. Do not treat a rendered image as proof that a structural detail, code requirement or installation sequence is correct.

A practical remodel-planning workflow

1. Measure before you decorate

Record wall lengths, ceiling height, door and window sizes, sill heights, fixed radiators, columns, stairs and service locations. Note which dimensions are confirmed and which are estimates. An optional laser distance measurer can speed collection, but it does not remove the need to check critical measurements on site.

2. Build the existing-condition model

Reproduce the home as it exists before drawing the desired remodel. Include openings and immovable elements first. If you start from a blueprint, sketch or scan, compare at least one known dimension with the physical room and correct the scale before placing furniture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Save an untouched baseline

Make a copy named for the existing condition. Create separate versions for each layout, wall change or finish scheme. This prevents an attractive option from replacing the information you need to return to when a measurement is challenged.

4. Test circulation and clearances

Place cabinets, appliances, beds, sofas and tables at their actual or specified sizes. Inspect door swings, drawer openings, walkways and approaches to windows and controls in the 2D view. Use 3D views to identify visual conflicts that are hard to see from above.

5. Add finishes and furniture after the plan works

Decorative catalogs are most useful after the room geometry is credible. Record the product name, dimensions and finish outside the visual model so a catalog change does not silently alter the physical assumptions.

6. Produce the handoff material

Export or print the views your designer or contractor can read: a dimensioned plan, relevant elevations, room-by-room finish notes and clearly labeled alternatives. Label every sheet with the date and revision. Ask the professional responsible for the work what file format and level of detail they require.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Validate before construction decisions

Have a qualified local professional verify structural, electrical, plumbing, fire-safety and accessibility implications. Check permit requirements with the authority having jurisdiction. Visualization software cannot certify an existing wall, calculate a beam or authorize construction.

Free plans, paid tiers and the cost decision

Free access is useful for learning a tool and testing a small idea, but compare what the free tier actually permits. HomeByMe’s listed Starter offer allows up to two projects and five full-HD images. RoomSketcher describes limited projects and features on its free tier. Planner 5D and other products may vary by device, app version and plan. Exact cross-tool pricing is not established here, and all current offers should be checked on the vendor’s live page before purchase.

For a one-room refresh, a limited free plan may be enough. For a whole-home remodel, the important questions are whether you can keep multiple options, export the views your contractor needs and retain access to the project after the design stage. A low headline price is not useful if you cannot save the revisions or images that document your decisions.

Common mistakes and how to recover

The model looks good but furniture does not fit

Check scale and verify one known wall length. Re-enter doors, windows and built-ins before adjusting the furniture. Do not “make it work” by shrinking objects below their real dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An imported plan is offset or distorted

Use a known reference dimension to rescale it, then compare a second dimension in another part of the room. If the two checks disagree, treat the source drawing as approximate and measure the space again.

A rendered image is mistaken for a construction drawing

Keep visual options separate from dimensioned documentation. Mark the model as preliminary and obtain professional drawings for structural or permitted work.

The chosen app cannot produce the needed output

Identify the required deliverable before investing time: a shareable image, a dimensioned plan, an elevation, a materials list or an editable file. If the tool does not describe that output, choose a workflow that does or involve a designer who can produce it.

Decision guide

  • Pick Planner 5D if accessible cross-device 2D/3D exploration is your priority.
  • Pick HomeByMe if you want a measured-plan-to-3D workflow and your project fits the listed Starter allowance of two projects and five full-HD images.
  • Pick RoomSketcher if your remodel begins with a blueprint, sketch or supported scan.
  • Pick SketchUp if you want flexible 3D modeling and are prepared to learn a broader tool with a LayOut presentation stage.
  • Pick Chief Architect if you need deeper residential planning, dimensions, elevations and generated building elements and can support a more technical workflow.

No single product is best for every homeowner. Match the software to your starting material, the decisions you need to test and the documents a qualified professional must ultimately verify.
