The right instant camera depends on what you want to do with each picture. Choose an analog camera if you want every shot to become a physical print; choose a hybrid camera if you want to review images before spending film, or print photos from your phone. Then pick a format: Instax Mini for compact keepsakes, Instax SQUARE for a square frame, Instax WIDE for larger prints, or Polaroid for its full-size film format.
Start with the kind of instant-photo workflow you want
Instant cameras are not all the same kind of device. The key distinction is whether the camera exposes film at the moment you take a picture or lets you choose a digital image to print afterward.

Analog cameras: every shot uses film
An analog instant camera exposes film when you press the shutter. That gives each picture the one-off character of an instant print, but it also means a misfire or unwanted frame consumes film. Consider this route if the physical process and the anticipation of a print matter more than reviewing every image first.
Hybrid cameras: choose what to print
A hybrid camera captures digitally and lets you select images before printing them on instant film. Some models also print pictures sent from a phone. This can be useful at an event where you want to avoid printing every test shot, though the actual savings depend on how many pictures you take and print.

Phone printers: keep your phone as the camera
A dedicated smartphone printer is the simplest fit if you already like taking pictures with your phone and mainly want physical copies. Fujifilm’s catalog lists printers for Mini, SQUARE, and WIDE formats. Check the printer’s format before buying film; Instax formats are not interchangeable with Polaroid film.
Choose a print format before choosing a model
Instax’s current catalog groups cameras and printers around Mini, SQUARE, and WIDE film. Polaroid uses its own full-size film. The brands’ films are not cross-compatible, so the format choice determines which camera and refills you can use.

Hybrid picks: print selectively or bring in phone photos
Instax Mini Evo: hybrid camera and Mini printer
The Mini Evo is a hybrid camera that uses Instax Mini film and can print pictures sent from a smartphone. Fujifilm also describes a feature for saving printed images to a phone. Choose it if you want a compact camera-and-printer combination and the option to print selected phone pictures. The phone-printing and saved-image functions are documented by Fujifilm; its hybrid classification and image-area specification are reported by Digital Camera World.
Instax WIDE Evo: a hybrid workflow on WIDE film
The WIDE Evo combines a hybrid camera with smartphone-photo printing. Fujifilm describes it as its first WIDE-format hybrid camera and smartphone printer and lists a wide-angle mode. Its WIDE film format measures 86 × 108 mm, which Fujifilm describes as twice as wide as Mini film. It suits people who value the broader format and want to choose images before printing; the larger format is not evidence by itself of better image quality. Analog picks: Instax simplicity or Polaroid full-size film
Polaroid Now Generation 3: analog and full-size
The Now Generation 3 is an analog instant camera designed for Polaroid film. Polaroid lists two-lens autofocus, a self-timer, and double-exposure modes. It is a reasonable shortlist choice if you want an analog workflow and Polaroid’s full-size format. Those listed features are not the same as the app-connected modes described for the separate Now+ model; check the exact generation and model before buying for a particular control. Analog Instax: choose by format and local availability
Fujifilm’s catalog lists analog options including Mini 13, Mini 99, SQUARE SQ40, and WIDE 400, alongside hybrid cameras and dedicated printers. Use the format first to narrow the choice, then compare the individual camera’s controls and size. A listing in the catalog does not guarantee that a model is currently stocked in your country; verify regional availability and the exact model name with local retailers. What to check before you buy
- Format and compatibility: Match the camera or printer to its film format. Confirm the refill type for the exact model; Polaroid and Instax film cannot be swapped between systems.
- Whether you want every shot printed: Analog cameras use film at capture. Hybrid models let you select images before printing, which may help limit unwanted prints at gatherings.
- Phone-photo printing: If you want to print existing phone pictures, confirm that the specific camera supports smartphone printing or choose a dedicated printer in the format you prefer.
- Controls: Look for the feature you will actually use, such as a self-timer or double exposure. App-connected modes are model-specific: Polaroid describes them for Now+, while the Now Generation 3 page lists its own features.
- Ongoing film cost: Film is a recurring expense. Prices vary by market and pack, and the available product pages do not establish a consistent, current cost-per-print comparison across these options. Check local film prices as well as the camera price.
Which instant camera or printer should you get?
Choose the Instax Mini Evo if you want a hybrid camera, Mini prints, and a way to print selected smartphone images. Choose the WIDE Evo if a larger, wider Instax format matters and you want the same select-before-print workflow. Choose the Polaroid Now Generation 3 if you prefer an analog camera built for Polaroid film. If you already take pictures on your phone, a dedicated Instax printer may be a better match than buying a camera. For analog Instax, shortlist Mini 13, Mini 99, SQUARE SQ40, or WIDE 400 by format, then confirm local stock and film availability.
