The best FreeBuds Neo setup depends on what you are doing. For clearer calls, wear both earbuds, keep call-noise reduction enabled in loud places, and use Awareness voice mode when you need to hear nearby speech. For stronger bass, first get a consistent ear-tip seal, then select a bass preset or make a modest low-frequency EQ adjustment. For maximum battery life, turn noise cancellation off when you do not need isolation: Huawei rates up to 10 hours of SD music with ANC off versus 6.5 hours with ANC on.

Set up FreeBuds Neo before changing sound
Start with the earbuds charged and seated securely. A loose fit can reduce perceived bass, let outside noise mask speech, and make noise control less consistent. Then configure the earbuds in the app rather than relying only on the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Open HUAWEI AI Life (or HUAWEI Audio Connect where supported).
- Select the FreeBuds Neo card. If it is missing, pair the earbuds in Bluetooth settings first, then return to the app.
- Install any firmware update shown on the earbud card. Updates can add or change sound, gesture and noise-control behavior.
- Review the card’s battery status, noise-control controls, sound-effect or custom-EQ page, and gesture assignments.
- Make one change at a time and test it with the type of call or music you actually use. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from fit, a codec, an EQ change or noise control.
AI Life’s controls are device-dependent. If a menu in this guide is not displayed, update the app and earbuds, reconnect them, and check whether your phone supports that feature.

Best FreeBuds Neo settings for clearer calls
Wear both earbuds and check the seal
Use both earbuds for important calls in noisy locations. FreeBuds Neo can support one-earbud noise-control use, but Huawei recommends both earbuds for a better noise-cancellation experience. Press each earbud gently into place and try the supplied tip sizes if your fit changes when you speak or walk.
A stable fit matters because the microphones need a consistent acoustic path to separate your voice from surrounding sound. It also prevents intermittent audio caused by an earbud shifting or losing contact.
Keep call-noise reduction enabled in loud places
When you are near traffic, fans, a train platform or a busy office, leave the available call-noise-cancellation feature enabled. Huawei describes FreeBuds Neo as using three microphones and a bone-conduction microphone to suppress ambient noise while enhancing vocal frequencies. Huawei’s product-page claim cites testing conditions of 95 dB background noise and 9 m/s wind; those conditions are not a promise that every street or venue will sound equally quiet.

Use Awareness voice mode when you need nearby speech
If you need to hear a colleague, an announcement or a cashier while wearing the earbuds, open Noise control, choose Awareness, and enable Voice mode if the option appears. Huawei describes Voice mode this way: “This feature suppresses low-frequency noises and makes human voices clearer.”

Voice mode is an awareness setting, not a replacement for call-noise cancellation. Its effect can be weaker during an active call or while music or ringtones are playing. Pause playback or lower its volume when you need to understand someone nearby.

How to get stronger bass without losing vocals
Fix the physical fit first
Bass is especially sensitive to leakage. Before changing EQ, use the tip that seals your ear canal without pressure and check that both earbuds sit at the same depth. Play a familiar bass line at a safe volume and move your jaw slightly; if the bass changes dramatically, the seal is probably inconsistent. This is a practical listening check, not a Huawei measurement.

In the FreeBuds Neo card, open Sound effect settings. Select a bass-oriented preset if your app displays one. If you prefer control, choose the custom-EQ option and make a small lift in the lowest bands.
Huawei confirms preset sound effects and custom EQ support, but it does not publish a model-specific numeric EQ recipe. The following is therefore a listening starting point, not a Huawei-tested specification:
- Raise the lowest one or two bands by a small amount, such as roughly 1–3 dB if the app uses decibel sliders.
- Leave the midrange near its default while you check whether vocals remain natural.
- If kick drums become boomy, reduce the next-lowest band slightly instead of continuing to raise the sub-bass band.
- Compare the custom setting with the default using the same song and volume. Stop increasing bass when vocals lose consonants or cymbals become masked.
Large boosts consume headroom. The earbuds or phone may reduce overall level, introduce distortion, or make the mix tiring even when the bass initially sounds impressive. A modest adjustment normally preserves more vocal detail.

Use separate profiles for music and speech
A bass-heavy setting that is enjoyable for music can make spoken podcasts and calls less intelligible. Keep the default or a flatter preset available for meetings and spoken content, and switch to the custom bass profile only for music. Gesture customization can make switching easier if your firmware exposes a suitable sound-control action, but the exact assignments depend on the app.

ANC, Awareness and Dynamic: choosing isolation versus awareness
ANC on
Use noise cancellation when steady low-frequency noise is the problem: aircraft engines, buses, air conditioners or office ventilation. It can make music and calls easier to hear at a lower volume, but Huawei’s battery figures show a clear runtime cost.
ANC off
Turn ANC off when you are in a quiet room, walking where you must hear traffic, or simply want the longest runtime. ANC off is also a useful troubleshooting step: if a pressure sensation, hiss or tonal change disappears, noise control—not the EQ—is affecting your experience.
Dynamic mode
In AI Life, the documented path for automatic selection is Noise canceling > Dynamic. Huawei says Dynamic chooses an optimal mode based on the surroundings. Availability depends on the required app modules, firmware and phone support, so the option may not appear on every setup. Because Dynamic can change modes as conditions change, it is convenient but less predictable than selecting ANC, Awareness or Off yourself.
Awareness mode
Awareness passes environmental sound through so you can remain alert. Add Voice mode when speech is the priority. Remember that Awareness is not a guarantee that every sound will be audible; keep volume moderate in places where you need to hear alarms, vehicles or announcements.

Battery settings and what the published figures mean
For maximum endurance, switch ANC off when isolation is unnecessary and avoid running the earbuds at high volume. Huawei warns that actual battery life varies with volume, audio source, environmental interference, enabled features and usage habits.

The SD figures were measured by Huawei using a HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro+, AAC, 50% volume, connection-quality priority and otherwise default settings. They are laboratory results, not a guaranteed time for every phone or listening pattern. The case totals assume the case is fully charged and the earbuds are recharged between sessions.
Practical battery decisions
- Quiet desk or home listening: use ANC off and a normal codec to approach the longest runtime.
- Flight, train or loud HVAC: ANC on may let you listen at a lower volume, but plan for the shorter rated time.
- Mixed day: use ANC only for noisy segments, then switch to Off or Awareness rather than leaving it enabled continuously.
- Battery appears much lower than expected: check volume, codec, repeated reconnections, phone interference, temperature and whether features such as ANC or Awareness have remained active.
Codec and phone compatibility settings
FreeBuds Neo supports SBC, AAC, L2HC 4.0, LDAC, CVSD, mSBC and LC3 according to Huawei’s listed formats. The best choice is the highest-quality mode your phone supports reliably, not automatically the mode with the largest number.

Huawei publishes separate SD and HD runtimes and device-dependent codec support. Treat LDAC and other HD modes as sound-quality choices, not as guaranteed battery-saving settings. If music stutters, lower the codec quality or use a more stable mode before changing EQ.

Gestures and everyday control
Huawei documents double-tap, triple-tap, swipe and press-and-hold gestures, with assignments configurable in the earbud card. Open the gesture page in AI Life or Audio Connect and set controls that match your routine. For example, keep a reliable play/pause or call-control gesture, reserve press-and-hold for noise control if offered, and avoid assigning an action you trigger accidentally when adjusting the fit.

After changing gestures, test them with both earbuds and during a call. Some actions can differ between left and right earbuds, and an assignment shown in the app may depend on firmware or phone support. If a gesture stops responding, clean and reseat the earbud, verify that the tap is detected, and check for an available firmware update.

When settings do not solve the problem
Calls still sound unclear
- Confirm both earbuds are connected and seated.
- Move away from strong wind or cover, and keep microphone openings clear.
- Disable music or ringtones while testing Awareness Voice mode.
- Try the call with ANC or call-noise reduction enabled, then compare with it disabled to identify which processing sounds clearer.
- Update firmware and the companion app. If only one phone has the problem, test another compatible phone before resetting the earbuds.
Bass is weak after an EQ change
- Return to the default sound effect and check the physical seal.
- Try another tip size and reseat both earbuds.
- Raise only the lowest EQ band slightly, then listen to vocals and kick drums.
- If the sound becomes muddy, undo the boost and use a bass preset with less midrange coloration.
Battery drains faster than the rating
Check whether ANC, Awareness, Dynamic mode, a high-volume level or an HD codec has been active throughout the session. Compare your result over several complete charges rather than one short session. Huawei’s figures are laboratory maximums, and the company specifically lists volume, source, interference, features and habits as variables.
A feature or menu is missing
Install the latest available AI Life or Audio Connect version, update the earbuds from their card, reconnect Bluetooth, and check phone and regional compatibility. L2HC 4.0, Dynamic noise control, custom EQ and gesture choices can depend on the connected device, firmware and app modules.
Bottom line
Use both FreeBuds Neo earbuds with call-noise reduction for the clearest voice pickup in loud places, and switch to Awareness > Voice mode when nearby speech matters. Build bass from a secure seal and a restrained custom-EQ adjustment rather than a large boost.
