The Best HDR Monitors in 2026: What to Buy and How to Choose

RTINGS’ current top HDR-monitor pick is the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3, a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED it describes as delivering deep blacks, bright highlights, accurate HDR, and vivid color. That is a third-party recommendation, not an independent test by Freedom251. HDR performance varies by model and use: compare contrast, local dimming, tone mapping, color, and room conditions rather than choosing by the HDR label alone.

Best HDR monitor overall: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3

RTINGS names the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 its best HDR monitor in its current roundup. The 32-inch 4K QD-OLED combines OLED-level black performance with bright highlights; RTINGS also cites accurate HDR and vivid colors as strengths. See RTINGS’ live HDR-monitor recommendations for its current ranking and test details.

This pick suits someone seeking a large, high-resolution gaming display with strong HDR image quality. It is not automatically the right choice for every desk or room: screen size, reflections, budget, and the type of work or games you use all matter. The roundup is oriented to the United States, and current local pricing and stock are not established here.

How the leading alternatives differ

Monitor Why consider it Trade-off or qualification
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 RTINGS’ current overall pick; 32-inch 4K QD-OLED, with deep blacks, bright highlights, accurate HDR, and vivid color. Its size and current local price or availability may not suit every buyer; check the live guide and regional listings.
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM Smaller alternative that RTINGS says performs similarly overall. RTINGS says it is less bright than the larger ASUS pick.
Samsung Odyssey OLED G80SH S32HG802S High-end OLED alternative with a matte coating that handles reflections better; RTINGS says it competes with the ASUS pick and uses the same panel. RTINGS says the ASUS produces clearer images.
LG 27GX700A-B and Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx Both appear in RTINGS’ July 2026 update notes as replacements in its recommendations. The notes alone do not establish their current ranking or detailed test results; check the live guide before treating either as a recommendation.

The PG32UCDM Gen3 is the clearest starting point for an overall pick, while the 27-inch ASUS addresses a smaller-desk preference and the Samsung’s matte finish is relevant in a room with reflections. These are distinctions reported by RTINGS, not results from a Freedom251 side-by-side test. Rankings, availability, and prices can change.

What separates convincing HDR from an HDR label

HDR is a signal and format capability as well as a display-performance question. A monitor can accept HDR content yet fail to make highlights, dark areas, and color look meaningfully better. Evaluate the whole image rather than relying on a single brightness figure.

Black level, contrast, and local dimming

Deep blacks create room for bright details to stand out. OLED pixels can emit light individually, whereas LCD monitors rely on a backlight and may use local dimming to darken parts of the screen. Local dimming quality matters: RTINGS notes that ineffective dimming can mute small highlights even when a display is bright. A nominal peak-brightness value cannot tell you how well a monitor controls light around a star, subtitle, or other small bright object.

Brightness over time and across the screen

Check both highlight brightness and sustained full-screen output. A brief bright patch and a screen held bright for a longer period are different tests. VESA’s DisplayHDR criteria publish separate center-patch, full-screen flash, and long-duration measurements; a tier label should not be read as a general-purpose sustained-brightness guarantee.

Tone mapping and PQ EOTF tracking

HDR mastering assigns intended brightness levels to image content. A monitor’s tone mapping determines how it fits those levels to its own capabilities, and PQ EOTF tracking shows whether the display follows the expected brightness curve. A screen that tracks too bright or too dark can depart from the creator’s intended image. Processing can make two monitors using the same panel behave differently.

Color gamut and color volume

Gamut describes the colors a display can produce at a given luminance; color volume considers color reproduction across luminance levels. A monitor may cover a wide range of colors at one brightness yet lose saturation as highlights get brighter. Limited color volume can make HDR colors look muted, so look for evaluations of color performance across brightness, not gamut coverage alone.

What VESA DisplayHDR certification tells you

A specific VESA DisplayHDR certification is more informative than an unqualified “HDR” claim, but check both the tier and the specification version. VESA cautions that a claim of HDR support without a DisplayHDR performance specification—or a pseudo-specification such as “HDR-400”—may not meet its certification requirements. Its certified-product list lets you check whether a particular model is certified.

VESA’s site identifies CTS 1.2 as the current DisplayHDR criteria set and dates its release to May 7, 2024. The revision tightened luminance, gamut, and bit-depth requirements and added tests for color accuracy, contrast ratio, black levels, and subtitle flicker. VESA also has separate DisplayHDR True Black tiers optimized for emissive displays such as OLED. LCD-oriented and True Black tiers use different criteria and test conditions, so comparing only the tier number across those families can mislead.

These are VESA’s tier-summary peak minimums and CTS 1.2 long-duration full-screen minimums, not interchangeable measurements: the certification also specifies separate center-patch and full-screen-flash tests. Check the detailed criteria and the model’s stated certification rather than assuming that the number after “HDR” describes every viewing condition. See VESA’s CTS 1.2 performance criteria.

VESA’s transition period for certification under the earlier DisplayHDR 1.1 specification ended in May 2025 for monitors and May 2026 for laptops. A previously certified product may still be on sale, so verify the version listed for the exact model rather than assuming every product currently sold uses CTS 1.2.

Choose by screen size, resolution, room, and use

  • For a 32-inch 4K gaming setup: Start with the PG32UCDM Gen3 if its size and local price work for you; it is RTINGS’ current overall pick.
  • For a smaller desk: Consider the 27-inch PG27UCDM. RTINGS reports similar overall performance but lower brightness than the larger ASUS.
  • For a room with reflections: The Samsung’s matte coating is a relevant advantage according to RTINGS, while its comparison notes favor the ASUS for image clarity.
  • For a bright room: Prioritize reflection handling and sustained brightness in addition to peak highlights. A bright highlight rating alone does not establish how well a monitor will handle ambient light.
  • For dark-room gaming or HDR films: Black level, contrast, local-dimming behavior, and tone mapping are central; a high tier number alone cannot predict the result.
  • For color-sensitive creative work: Look for color accuracy and performance across luminance levels, and verify that the display and your software support the HDR workflow you need.

The best fit also depends on resolution and refresh-rate requirements, desk space, and budget. The available recommendation details do not establish comparable measured values for every candidate on peak and sustained brightness, PQ tracking, color volume, or price, so avoid ranking those models on unreported measurements.

Check Windows and the connection before buying

Microsoft says an external display for HDR video should support HDR10 and connect through DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, or Thunderbolt. Its guidance recommends certified displays, particularly the latest DisplayHDR 1.2 certification and DisplayHDR 500 or higher. These are compatibility recommendations, not a guarantee that every cable, graphics device, app, or streaming service will deliver HDR correctly. Consult Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guidance for supported hardware and setup details.

  1. Confirm the signal path: Check that the monitor supports HDR10 and that the specific port, cable, graphics hardware, and connection mode you intend to use support the required HDR signal.
  2. Check Windows display settings: Open Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable external display, and review the HDR controls available for that device. Exact options can vary with connected hardware and Windows version.
  3. Verify the content service: Protected HDR playback can depend on hardware DRM and codec support. Microsoft’s current guidance names HEVC for Netflix HDR and VP9 for YouTube HDR; service requirements can change, so confirm them with the provider.

If HDR is missing or playback looks wrong, first check that Windows is addressing the intended display, then verify the port and cable path, the display’s HDR mode, and the app’s or service’s requirements. A monitor’s certification cannot compensate for an incompatible source or playback chain.
