The best starting point for Ace Combat 8: WINGS OF THEVE on PC is the official tier closest to your hardware: 1080p with upscaling at 60 fps on Medium for a recommended-class system, or 4K with upscaling at 60 fps on High only if your PC matches the publisher’s higher tier. Treat those figures as targets rather than guarantees. For controls, a gamepad is the simplest choice; a supported flight stick or HOTAS is an alternative for players who prefer physical flight controls. The available evidence does not establish one universally superior graphics preset or control device.
This guide translates the published PC specifications, tested controller list and independent review experience into a practical setup process. It also explains what to change when performance drops, how to choose between the two flight models, and which claims are confirmed versus merely plausible.

Quick answer: the settings to try first
Match your resolution, preset and frame-rate goal to the hardware tier your PC most closely resembles. The table below combines Steam’s minimum and recommended specifications with Bandai Namco’s higher-tier target. The frame rates are publisher estimates, not guaranteed results on every system.

| Minimum tier | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X; 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8 GB) | 1920×1080 with upscaling | Low, 30 fps estimate; Steam warns that demanding scenes can reduce frame rate. Steam requirements |
| Recommended tier | Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X; 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6800 (16 GB) | 1920×1080 with upscaling | Medium, 60 fps estimate; demanding scenes may still dip. Steam requirements |
| Higher publisher tier | Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 5 7600X; 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 (16 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (24 GB) | 3840×2160 with upscaling, or 3840×1600 for UWQHD+ | High at 60 fps. These are Bandai Namco targets, not an independent guarantee. Official PC specifications |
If your system falls between tiers, start with the lower tier’s resolution and frame-rate goal, then raise image quality one step at a time. A stable, responsive 60 fps is generally a better target than a higher preset that produces repeated drops during large battles.

What the published requirements actually mean
Minimum does not mean 60 fps
Steam’s minimum configuration is designed around 1080p output with upscaling at 30 fps on Low. It specifies Windows 11, 16 GB of memory, an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, and either an RTX 2060 with 6 GB of video memory or an RX 6600 XT with 8 GB. The page also requires an SSD, a graphics card with hardware ray-tracing support, and DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or newer. The stated 30 fps is an estimate, and Steam explicitly cautions that frame rate can fall in graphics-intensive scenes. See the complete Steam specification.
That means a computer that merely meets the minimum should not be configured like a 60-fps machine. Use Low first, keep the 1080p output and upscaling combination, and judge demanding missions rather than only quiet menus or early tutorial sections.
Recommended is a 1080p/60 Medium target
The recommended Steam tier raises the processor to an Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, doubles memory to 32 GB, and lists an RTX 3070 with 8 GB or an RX 6800 with 16 GB. Its target is 1920×1080 with upscaling at 60 fps on Medium, with the same SSD, hardware ray-tracing and DirectX 12 requirements as the minimum tier. Steam still warns that graphics-heavy scenes may lower the frame rate. Steam’s recommended tier.
This is the most useful default for many PC players: select Medium, retain upscaling, and use 1080p output unless your monitor requires a different native mode. Do not assume that a card faster than the listed GPU automatically makes 4K High sensible; CPU headroom, cooling, driver state and the game’s most complex scenes all affect the result.
The higher tier is specifically for 4K or 3840×1600
Bandai Namco’s official PC page lists an Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, 32 GB RAM, and an RTX 4080 with 16 GB or RX 7900 XTX with 24 GB for its higher tier. The target is 3840×2160 with upscaling at 60 fps on High. The same page also states support for 3840×1600 with upscaling at 60 fps on High, a resolution commonly used by UWQHD+ displays. Read the official tier and display targets.
Because these are publisher targets rather than controlled benchmark results, use them as a ceiling for your initial configuration. If your 4K system cannot hold a comfortable frame rate in the busiest missions, lower the preset or resolution target before abandoning responsiveness.

A practical graphics setup process
The sources do not publish a controlled test of each individual graphics option, so no shadow, cloud, anti-aliasing or upscaling mode can be identified as universally optimal. Instead, use a repeatable adjustment order that protects frame rate while preserving as much image quality as your hardware allows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the platform prerequisites. Install the game on an SSD, use Windows 11 as specified by Steam, and make sure the GPU supports hardware ray tracing, DirectX 12 and Shader Model 6.6 or newer. These are listed requirements, not optional enhancements. Verify them on Steam.
- Choose the closest published tier. Compare your CPU, GPU and RAM with the minimum, recommended and higher-tier table. If one component is substantially below a tier, begin with the lower tier rather than letting the strongest component dictate the preset.
- Set the display resolution and upscaling combination. Start at 1920×1080 with upscaling for the minimum or recommended target. Use 3840×2160 or 3840×1600 with upscaling only when your hardware is close to the higher publisher tier. The published figures describe these combinations together; they are not promises that native rendering at the same resolution will perform identically.
- Select the matching preset. Use Low for the minimum 30-fps target, Medium for the recommended 1080p/60 target, and High for the higher 4K or 3840×1600/60 target. Apply the setting and play a demanding mission segment instead of judging performance from a static scene.
- Check for dips, not just an average. Large battles, dense effects and rapid camera movement are the situations in which a nominally acceptable setup may feel uneven. Steam’s own requirement text warns about graphics-intensive scenes, and a TechRadar review likewise reported dips during particularly hectic moments.
- Make one change at a time. If the game is not smooth, reduce the preset first. If that is not enough, lower the resolution target while retaining upscaling. Changing several options simultaneously makes it difficult to know which adjustment helped.
- Stop when control response is consistent. A lower preset that keeps aiming and flight input predictable is preferable to a visually richer setting that repeatedly stutters. The official material does not provide a frame-time threshold or a guaranteed minimum, so use your display and personal tolerance as the final test.
Graphics choices by PC scenario
Your computer is close to the minimum tier
Use Low at 1920×1080 with upscaling and expect a 30-fps-class experience. Keep background applications to a minimum, because the listed 16 GB of system memory leaves less headroom than the recommended 32 GB tier. If demanding scenes still fall below your acceptable level, lowering the resolution target is the evidence-supported next move; there is no published settings test that identifies a particular individual effect as the guaranteed bottleneck.
Your computer is close to the recommended tier
Begin at Medium, 1920×1080 with upscaling, targeting 60 fps. This is the clearest official starting point for a mainstream gaming PC. If the game remains smooth through hectic missions and you prefer sharper detail, test a higher output resolution or preset separately. Do not describe that combination as an official 4K recommendation unless your hardware is closer to the higher tier.
You have an RTX 4070-class system
One TechRadar reviewer used an RTX 4070 PC at High settings and reported generally solid 60-fps performance, with dips in particularly hectic moments. That is one reviewer’s result on one system, not a controlled benchmark and not a guarantee for every RTX 4070 configuration. Read the TechRadar review.
Use that report as a reason to test High rather than as proof that every RTX 4070 can sustain 4K. Start with the resolution your display and system can support comfortably, then check busy missions. If dips are distracting, step down to Medium or reduce the resolution target before changing controls.
Your computer matches the higher publisher tier
An RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX paired with the listed modern CPU and 32 GB of RAM is the appropriate starting point for 3840×2160 or 3840×1600 with upscaling at High and a 60-fps target. Even here, the target is not a laboratory guarantee. Leave room to reduce the preset if your particular system, driver version or scene produces repeated drops.

HDR and display configuration
Steam lists HDR availability for the game. HDR is therefore worth trying when your monitor or television supports it and HDR is enabled correctly in the operating system, but the available specifications provide no calibration measurements, recommended peak-brightness value or game-specific HDR slider setting. Steam lists HDR as a feature.
Enable HDR only when the desktop and display are already configured for it, then compare the image in a representative mission. If highlights look clipped, shadows are washed out or the result is less legible than SDR, disable it rather than compensating with an invented numerical value. No published test establishes that HDR changes frame-rate targets.
Choosing a control method
There is no evidence for one best control scheme for every pilot. A gamepad is the straightforward starting point, while a flight stick or HOTAS can provide the physical feel some players want. Choose according to comfort, desk space and the exact device’s verified support—not on the assumption that more hardware automatically means better performance.

TechRadar’s reviewer used a standard Xbox Wireless Controller throughout the review and reported that it worked throughout the experience. TechRadar’s controller experience. A gamepad is a sensible first choice because it avoids mounting hardware, extra drivers and a learning curve associated with a full flight setup.
Bandai Namco’s Japanese product page lists the PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller, Xbox Wireless Controller and Steam Controller among devices tested for the Steam version. Tested-device status is evidence for those listed combinations, not a guarantee that every revision, wireless adapter or third-party configuration will behave identically. See the official tested-controller list.
Flight stick or HOTAS: an optional preference
The same official list includes the ACE COMBAT 8 flight stick for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, plus T.Flight HOTAS NEO ACE COMBAT 8 editions for PlayStation 5/PC and Xbox Series X|S/PC. Confirm the exact platform edition and connection method before purchasing: a device name that includes console support does not by itself prove that every variant works on Steam. Check the publisher’s listed devices.

A stick or HOTAS may feel more natural to players who want a dedicated throttle, trigger and axis controls. It is not required, and the supplied sources do not establish that it is more accurate, faster or universally superior to a gamepad.
Selecting the flight model
TechRadar describes two flight models: one allows more granular aircraft control, while the other simplifies handling. The review does not provide exact menu labels or a complete keybind table, so avoid relying on an assumed option name or copying a control map that the game may not use.
Choose the simpler model when
- You are new to the series or to flight-action games.
- You want to concentrate on missions, positioning and weapons rather than fine aircraft behavior.
- You are sharing the game with players who prefer a shorter learning curve.
Choose the more granular model when
- You want finer control over aircraft movement and are willing to practice.
- You are using a physical stick or HOTAS and want its axes to matter more directly.
- You enjoy learning how small input changes affect turns, aim and positioning.
Try the model that matches your immediate goal, then switch if the aircraft feels either too automatic or unnecessarily demanding. The sources establish the difference in handling philosophy, not a ranking of the two modes.
A reliable controller setup checklist
- Connect the controller before launching the game. This gives Steam and Windows the best opportunity to identify the device consistently.
- Use a device listed by the publisher when possible. The official tested list includes DualSense, Xbox Wireless Controller, Steam Controller and the named flight-stick/HOTAS editions. Refer to the list before buying or troubleshooting.
- Start with the simpler flight model if you are unsure. Move to the granular model after you understand the aircraft’s response.
- Test every essential input in a safe mission or practice context. Confirm pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, weapon selection and camera behavior before committing to a difficult sortie. The published sources do not provide a universal binding table, so use the game’s own displayed assignments rather than an invented map.
- Check the exact PC edition of a stick or HOTAS. A console-and-PC product family can contain different connectors or firmware. Verify that your particular model is the Windows PC version named or supported by the manufacturer and publisher.
- Keep a gamepad available during initial setup. If a stick is not recognized, a tested controller gives you a way to reach settings and finish troubleshooting without assuming the flight hardware is defective.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Frame rate is below the target everywhere
- Confirm that your hardware actually matches the tier you selected, including CPU and RAM, not just GPU model.
- Move from High to Medium or from Medium to Low.
- Reduce the resolution target while keeping upscaling enabled.
- Make sure the game is installed on an SSD and that the system meets the required DirectX 12, Shader Model 6.6 and hardware-ray-tracing specifications.
These changes follow the published tiers. The sources do not identify a single effect setting that can be removed while preserving all other quality settings.
Performance is fine until major battles
This pattern is consistent with the caveat in Steam’s requirements and with TechRadar’s report of dips during hectic moments. Test your chosen tier in those scenes, then lower the preset or resolution target one step. Do not treat a quiet mission segment as proof that the configuration will remain at its nominal frame rate everywhere.

Upscaling is part of every published performance target, so softness is a trade-off built into the official 30-fps, 60-fps and 4K/60 combinations. If performance headroom exists, test a higher output resolution or preset. If it does not, retain the stable target rather than disabling upscaling without evidence that your system can render the same workload natively.

HDR looks worse than SDR
Check that HDR is enabled both in the operating system and on the display. Because no source supplies calibration values, compare the two modes using the same mission and choose the one with clearer clouds, cockpit detail and contrast. Disable HDR if the image is clipped or washed out.
The flight stick or HOTAS is not detected
- Confirm that the exact device edition is the Windows PC model listed by the publisher.
- Reconnect the device before launching the game and check whether Windows sees it.
- Use a listed gamepad temporarily to determine whether the issue is device recognition rather than the game’s general input system.
- Do not assume that a similarly named console-only model has identical PC support.
The official controller list establishes tested devices, but it does not promise compatibility for every flight peripheral or configuration.
Decision guide: which starting point fits you?
| Your priority | Graphics starting point | Control starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play on a minimum-tier PC | 1080p with upscaling, Low, 30-fps-class target | Gamepad | It keeps the workload and physical setup modest while you verify baseline performance. |
| Stable 60 fps at 1080p | 1080p with upscaling, Medium | Gamepad or listed stick | This is Steam’s recommended target and leaves a clear path for later adjustments. |
| Maximum detail on a high-end display | 3840×2160 or 3840×1600 with upscaling, High, 60-fps target | Whichever listed device feels comfortable | Bandai Namco’s higher tier is aimed at these output resolutions, but scene-specific dips remain possible. |
| Learning the game quickly | Use the tier that holds a consistent frame rate | Gamepad with the simpler flight model | Fewer physical controls and simpler handling reduce setup time. |
| Practicing detailed aircraft control | Use the tier that leaves consistent input response | Supported flight stick or HOTAS with the granular model | This emphasizes physical axes and finer handling, without claiming a universal competitive advantage. |
What “best” means for this game
The strongest evidence points to a balanced rule: choose the highest preset and resolution combination that remains smooth in the most demanding scenes you actually play. Steam’s minimum and recommended figures define 1080p targets at 30 and 60 fps, while Bandai Namco’s higher tier defines 4K or 3840×1600 at 60 fps on High. None of those pages supplies an independent benchmark proving that one individual graphics slider is optimal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor controls, “best” is personal but not arbitrary. A tested Xbox Wireless Controller or another listed gamepad is the low-friction option. A listed flight stick or HOTAS is worthwhile when you specifically want dedicated physical flight controls and are prepared to verify the exact PC model. The simpler flight model favors accessibility; the granular model favors players who want more aircraft-control detail.
Start with the closest published tier, test a demanding mission, and change one variable at a time. That approach gives you a defensible configuration without presenting a publisher estimate or one reviewer’s experience as a universal promise.
