There is no universal best alternative to Gemini for app connections. Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are the main options to compare—but the right choice depends on whether your exact app is supported, what the assistant can do with it, and whether the feature is available for your personal or work account. Gemini itself is also expanding: Google announced more Connected Apps in September 2026, though that does not guarantee they have rolled out to every user.
Which Gemini alternatives are worth comparing?
Start with Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, then compare them against the apps and tasks you actually need. Connector catalogs change, and a service may offer different connections depending on account type, region, device, workspace settings or plan. | Assistant or product | What its official documentation establishes | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | Connectors can retrieve data and take actions in connected services. Anthropic’s live directory showed 892 connectors on October 4, 2026; that is a dated directory snapshot, not a measure of quality or proof that every connector works for every user. | Supports custom connectors and services that support MCP; verify the setup and capabilities of the specific connector. |
| ChatGPT | Connected apps can provide external information, support deep research, sync some content, or perform supported actions, depending on the app. | Availability and authorization depend on factors including plan, region, workspace, role, model and interface. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Personal Copilot can connect to Microsoft and Google accounts. Microsoft 365 Copilot has a separate connector system; Microsoft says it offers over 100 prebuilt connectors. | Do not confuse personal Copilot account connections with workplace Microsoft 365 Copilot connectors, which have distinct setup and data architecture. |
| Gemini | Google Connected Apps span tasks such as email and calendar, media, device control and supported Android calls or messages. Google announced additional services in September 2026. | It remains a moving baseline; available apps and actions vary by Gemini surface, device, country and account type. |
Claude: connectors for retrieving information and taking actions
Anthropic’s Claude Help Center says, “Connectors let Claude access your apps and services, retrieve your data, and take actions within connected services.” Its documentation says connectors inherit each person’s permissions in the connected service and describes custom connectors, including support for services that support MCP. Examples in Anthropic’s directory include Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, Figma, HubSpot and Linear. See Claude’s connector help and the Anthropic connector directory.
The directory displayed 892 connectors when viewed on October 4, 2026. Because its contents are dynamic, treat that number as a snapshot—not evidence that Claude has better coverage, more reliable integrations, or the particular connector you need.

ChatGPT: connected apps with capabilities that vary by app
OpenAI documents connected apps that can bring information and actions into ChatGPT. Depending on the app, they may let you search and reference external information, use connected sources in deep research, sync some content, or perform supported actions. Authorization may require approval from the app provider or a workspace administrator; connecting an app does not bypass the provider’s permissions or existing workspace controls. Availability varies by plan, region, workspace, role, model and interface. Check OpenAI’s connected-app documentation for the current details.
Microsoft Copilot: distinguish personal connections from Microsoft 365
Personal Copilot
Microsoft describes connections from personal Copilot to Microsoft and Google accounts, including OneDrive, Outlook.com, Drive, Gmail, Contacts and Calendar. You authorize the account and determine what Copilot may access; existing account permissions still apply. If Copilot cannot retrieve OneDrive or Outlook information, check that you connected the Microsoft account that actually owns it. See Microsoft’s personal Copilot connection guidance.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
Workplace connectors are a different product and architecture. Microsoft distinguishes synced connectors, which index content in Microsoft Graph, from federated connectors, which fetch information from its source in real time without indexing it into Microsoft 365. Microsoft Learn says Microsoft 365 Copilot offers over 100 prebuilt connectors and that source permissions are enforced. Its documentation described federated connectors as read-only and said write actions were planned for early October 2026; that date has passed, so consult the current Microsoft Learn connector overview rather than assuming whether the rollout is complete. Workplace administrators may control access.

How to choose the right connector
Before choosing an assistant, check the exact account, app and task. A connection that can find and summarize information may not be able to create, edit or send anything.
- Check app coverage. Look for the exact app in the service’s current directory or settings, using the account, device and country where you intend to use it.
- Confirm the supported action. Determine whether the connector can search or read, or also draft, create, update, send or manage content. Read its documentation and authorization prompts.
- Check eligibility. Establish whether the feature requires a particular plan, consumer account, work account, workspace role or administrator approval.
- Understand permissions and data handling. Find out what account authorization is requested, whether the connector respects source permissions, and whether content is synced into an index or fetched live.
- Test the intended workflow. Try the specific task with the account you plan to use, and note any setup, custom MCP configuration or reauthentication required.
When a workflow automation service makes more sense
If the app you need is missing from an assistant’s directory—or the task must run as a repeatable sequence across several tools—a workflow automation service may be a better category to investigate. For instance, n8n documents AI integrations. That establishes its relevance as an option, not that it is best for a particular workflow. Compare the apps you need, setup effort and usage limits; current pricing and a fair product ranking are not established here.
