Marvel Rivals is the closest modern substitute for Overwatch 2. It keeps the character-based team combat and coordinated abilities, but moves to a third-person camera and adds destructible arenas plus superhero team-up skills. If you specifically want a first-person 5v5 objective shooter, Paladins is the better match. Team Fortress 2 is the classic class-based alternative, while Apex Legends, Valorant and FragPunk adapt hero abilities to battle-royale or tactical-round formats.
That distinction matters because “games like Overwatch 2” can mean several different things: short objective rounds, clearly defined team roles, ability-heavy heroes, fast movement, or simply a free-to-play multiplayer shooter. The guide below separates direct substitutes from adjacent games so you can choose based on the part of Overwatch you actually enjoy.

Marvel Rivals is the strongest first recommendation when you want the basic Overwatch 2 loop without returning to the same game. Steam classifies it as a free-to-play multiplayer hero shooter, and GameSpot describes it as an Overwatch-like game built around team-up abilities and a third-person perspective. It launched on December 5, 2024, according to its Steam listing.

Why it feels familiar
Matches still revolve around selecting a recognizable character, combining abilities with teammates and winning fights through coordination rather than raw aim alone. A roster built from Marvel heroes gives every pick an immediately understandable identity, much as Overwatch’s heroes do. Team composition, timing and ultimate-style ability usage remain central decisions.
What makes it different
The camera sits behind your character instead of inside the weapon view. That changes how you read cover, corners and incoming attacks: you can see more of your own model and the surrounding arena, but the aiming feel is not interchangeable with a first-person shooter. Destructible environments also make the battlefield less static. Walls, cover and routes can change as a fight develops, so a position that is safe in one engagement may disappear in the next.
Team-up abilities are the other major departure. Certain character combinations unlock coordinated moves, giving squad composition a layer beyond choosing damage, frontline or support-style functions. The system rewards players who discuss pairings before a match, but it can make the game feel less standardized than Overwatch’s more explicit role discipline.

Choose Marvel Rivals if…
- You want the nearest current hero-shooter structure and do not mind third-person combat.
- You enjoy recognizable superhero characters and abilities that interact with one another.
- You prefer arenas that can be reshaped instead of permanently fixed cover layouts.
Skip it if…
You specifically want first-person weapon handling, strict role readability or a hero roster unrelated to a major entertainment franchise. In that case, start with Paladins or Team Fortress 2.
2. Paladins: first-person 5v5 objectives with build depth
Paladins is the closest fit for players who want first-person 5v5 matches, familiar team roles and objective play. Steam calls it “the ultimate fantasy team-based shooter experience” and lists more than 50 customizable Champions. Its modes include pushing a payload and contesting rotating objectives. The named archetypes are Damage, Flank, Frontline and Support, and Champions can be customized and itemized.
Where Paladins overlaps with Overwatch
The match grammar is immediately recognizable: assemble a team, select a character with a defined combat job, fight over space and convert a won engagement into objective progress. Payload pushes create the same forward-and-back rhythm that Overwatch players know, while rotating objectives force teams to decide when to regroup and when to give up a lost position.
Because it is first person, aiming, sightlines and weapon feedback should feel more familiar to an Overwatch player than Marvel Rivals does. The four broad archetypes also provide a useful starting point when you are learning the roster.

How customization changes the decisions
Paladins adds cards and items that let you tune a Champion beyond the default kit. That gives you more control over cooldowns, survivability or situational strengths, but it also increases the number of variables to learn. Two players using the same Champion may be pursuing different builds and therefore different timing windows.
This flexibility is the principal trade-off. Overwatch’s standardized kits make it easier to predict what an opposing hero can do. Paladins asks you to read both the Champion and the build behind it. New players should learn one role and one Champion first, then experiment with cards after they understand the base abilities.
Choose Paladins if…
- You want a first-person perspective and 5v5 objective matches.
- Payloads, contested zones and defined team jobs are more important to you than a particular license or art style.
- You enjoy making between-match build choices and itemizing a character.
Expect a different presentation
Its fantasy setting and card/item systems make the game less immediately clean and standardized than Overwatch. That is not a flaw for players who like experimentation, but it can feel busy if you want every hero’s behavior to be legible at a glance.
3. Team Fortress 2: the class-based foundation
Team Fortress 2 is the right choice when you want to see the class-based ideas that helped establish modern team shooters. Steam lists nine distinct classes, each with different tactical abilities and personalities. Its objective modes include Capture the Flag, Control Point, Payload, Arena and King of the Hill. GameSpot identifies the class design and payload objective as foundational ideas later associated with hero shooters.

Every class has a clear battlefield job and a strong personality. That clarity makes team composition easy to understand even before you know every weapon. Payload maps create an obvious shared goal, while Control Point and King of the Hill emphasize timing, rotations and area denial. The result is a game where positioning and coordinated pushes matter as much as individual eliminations.
Valve’s Steam listing quotes PC Gamer calling it “The most fun you can have online.” The game is also free to play on Steam, which makes it a low-cost way to explore the genre’s roots.
How it differs from a modern hero shooter
Team Fortress 2 uses classes rather than a large roster of individually authored heroes. Weapons define much of each class’s practical identity, so the ability spectacle and cooldown management are lighter than in Overwatch 2. The visual presentation and interface are also from an older generation, and the pace can feel less polished to players accustomed to newer live-service games.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Those differences are exactly why it is useful. If you want to understand why roles such as tank, support and damage remain readable in team shooters, TF2 demonstrates the principle with unusually direct designs.
Choose Team Fortress 2 if…
- You want classic payload and control objectives with nine easy-to-distinguish classes.
- You play on a lower-spec PC and value a long-established game over modern presentation.
- You prefer weapon-defined roles and objective fundamentals to elaborate hero ability systems.
Steam also lists The Orange Box as a purchasable bundle that includes Team Fortress 2. Treat that as a storefront and regional availability detail: verify whether the bundle and the physical or boxed format you want are currently offered in your region before purchasing.
4. Apex Legends: hero abilities in a battle royale
Apex Legends is an adjacent recommendation rather than a direct Overwatch replacement. GameSpot describes its Legends roster and squad play inside a battle-royale format, while EA maintains the official live-service game site. The appeal is strongest if your favorite Overwatch traits are responsive movement, accurate gunplay and distinct character abilities.
The parts Overwatch players may enjoy
Legends have recognizable abilities that create combinations within a squad. Movement, vertical routes and fast repositioning are especially important, so players who enjoy mobility-focused heroes may find a natural transition. Gunplay is central, and a coordinated squad can use abilities to start fights, escape them or control an approach.
Why the match structure is not the same
Overwatch repeatedly returns you to short objective engagements. Apex asks you to survive on a large map, manage equipment and make decisions knowing that elimination ends the run. The squad may spend long stretches rotating or looting before a decisive fight. That creates more downtime and higher stakes than a payload or control-point match.
There is no direct substitute for an Overwatch support respawn cycle in a battle royale. Revives and recoveries exist within the battle-royale rules, but losing a fight can remove a player or the entire squad from the match. Choose Apex for the survival tension, not for identical round pacing.
Choose Apex Legends if…
- Movement, gun skill and squad positioning matter more to you than fixed objectives.
- You are comfortable with large maps, looting and elimination stakes.
- You want character abilities inside a battle royale rather than a traditional arena shooter.
5. Valorant: deliberate tactical rounds and ability utility
Valorant combines character abilities with Counter-Strike-style tactical gunplay and an in-game shop, according to GameSpot. It is best understood as a tactical hero-shooter alternative: teams attack or defend, rounds are slower and more lethal, and coordination centers on executing a plan with limited lives.

Abilities are tools, not Overwatch-style ultimates
Many abilities block sightlines, gather information, delay a push or force an opponent out of cover. They shape where a fight can happen rather than turning a character into a temporary spectacle machine. Learning when to spend utility is often more important than chaining flashy movement.
The time-to-kill changes everything
Valorant’s lethal gunplay means a mistake can end your round immediately. You cannot rely on repeated respawns to correct a bad peek, and a numerical disadvantage is difficult to recover from. Crosshair placement, sound cues, map knowledge and disciplined communication become core skills.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Choose Valorant if…
- You prefer one-life rounds and deliberate attack-versus-defense decisions.
- You enjoy using abilities to deny space or collect information.
- You want a harsher, more precise gunplay test than Overwatch provides.
6. FragPunk: tactical rounds with changing rules
FragPunk is another adjacent option. GameSpot describes it as a free-to-play, round-based shooter whose hero abilities and Shard Card system make it closer to Valorant than Overwatch. Each team votes on gameplay modifiers each round, adding volatility to the tactical format.
What the Shard Card system adds
The card vote can alter the rules from one round to the next. That means you are not only reading the opposing team and the map; you are also adapting to a temporary modifier chosen by both sides. The result is a less predictable match-to-match rhythm than a conventional attack-and-defense shooter.
Why it is still not a payload substitute
FragPunk uses attack/defense rounds and fast kills rather than continuous payload escorts or control-point fights. Players who like Overwatch’s repeated engagements may find the one-life structure abrupt. Players who want tactical gunplay with more surprise and a lighter tone may appreciate the extra layer.

Choose FragPunk if…
- You want short tactical rounds but dislike completely static rules.
- You enjoy voting on modifiers and adapting your plan between rounds.
- You are comfortable with faster eliminations and attack/defense objectives.
How to choose based on the part of Overwatch you like
You want the closest overall feel
Start with Marvel Rivals. It preserves the hero-driven team-fight concept most directly, but accept the third-person camera, destructible arenas and team-up mechanics as fundamental changes rather than cosmetic ones.

You want first-person 5v5 objective matches
Choose Paladins. Its payload and rotating-objective modes, four named role archetypes and first-person view line up most closely with the traditional Overwatch match structure. Learn the card and item systems gradually instead of trying to copy an Overwatch build one-for-one.
You want the genre’s classic roots
Choose Team Fortress 2. Its nine classes and objective variety show the foundations of role-based team combat without requiring you to learn a large modern hero roster.
You want movement and squad gunplay
Choose Apex Legends if battle royale rules are welcome. Expect large-map rotations, looting and elimination stakes instead of quick objective resets.
You want tactical precision
Choose Valorant for the most deliberate alternative. Try FragPunk instead if round-based tactics appeal to you but you also want voting-driven modifiers that can change the conditions each round.
A practical way to test a new game
- Decide which rule set you actually want. Pick arena objectives, battle royale or tactical rounds before judging a game. A battle royale will feel wrong if your requirement is constant payload combat, regardless of how good its heroes are.
- Play one role or character family first. Start with a frontline, support, damage or information-focused style that resembles what you already understand. This reduces the number of new systems you are learning simultaneously.
- Learn the win condition before the roster. In Paladins and Team Fortress 2, understand how payloads and control zones convert space into a win. In Valorant and FragPunk, learn attack and defense timing. In Apex, learn rotations and survival decisions.
- Adjust your expectations about deaths. Arena shooters usually return you to the fight; Apex can eliminate a squad for the match; Valorant and FragPunk can remove you for the entire round. The acceptable level of risk is different in each format.
- Reassess after several matches, not one loss. New ability systems, cards or modifiers can make the first few games unusually confusing. Judge whether the decision-making is enjoyable after you understand the basic loop.
Common pitfalls when moving from Overwatch 2
Assuming every hero shooter has the same roles
Role labels do not guarantee identical jobs. A Support-style character in one game may be focused on healing, while another emphasizes information, utility or damage. Read the actual abilities and objective rules rather than transferring a familiar label unchanged.
Expecting every ability to create a spectacular ultimate moment
Valorant and FragPunk use abilities primarily for information, sightline control and space denial. Their value can be subtle and may only become obvious when a team coordinates them.
Ignoring the format change
Apex, Valorant and FragPunk are not failed versions of Overwatch because they lack payload rounds. They are built around different incentives. Decide whether you want survival, one-life tactics or continuous objective fighting before comparing them.
Overlooking customization
Paladins’ cards and items can change how a Champion behaves. Check the build before assuming an opposing player has the same cooldowns or survivability profile as the default version.
Treating availability as permanent
Free-to-play status, storefront listings, regional access and live-service support can change. Confirm the current listing, supported platform and any required account before committing time or money.
