When an Xbox Free Play Days promotion ends, the promoted paid game is no longer available to play through that event. To continue that exact experience, you’ll need to buy it; to start something else without paying for the base game, choose an ongoing free-to-play title. Xbox’s current US catalogue includes options ranging from Fortnite and Rocket League to Warframe and War Thunder, though listings and regional availability can change.
Free Play Days and free-to-play games are different
Free Play Days temporarily lets Xbox members try selected paid games during a stated event window. A free-to-play game, by contrast, is listed as free to play beyond a specific promotion. The two offers should not be confused: an expired Free Play Days game does not become permanently free because the event has ended.

For example, Xbox Wire’s October 1, 2026 announcement offered Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest through Sunday, October 4. That promotion has ended; those titles should not be treated as currently free on the basis of that event. Xbox Wire’s event announcement explains that event games could be installed from their store detail pages or found in the Free Play Days collection on console.

The following are examples listed in Xbox’s current US free-to-play catalogue. These are genre-based suggestions drawn from Xbox’s descriptions, not a hands-on ranking. Check the Xbox free-to-play catalogue and your regional store for current listings and availability.

Rocket League is a free-to-play option for readers looking for competitive, arcade-style play. Xbox lists it in the catalogue; the listing alone does not establish a comparative ranking or current player count.
Battle royale and shooter play
Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone are catalogue options for players seeking shooter experiences. Xbox’s listing does not provide comparable player-count or performance figures that would support calling one the more popular or better choice.

Co-op action and story-led play
Warframe is described by Xbox as a narrative-rich, free-to-play co-op shooter in which players command different Warframes while defending the Origin System. The First Descendant is described as a free-to-play third-person co-op action RPG shooter that supports solo play as well as co-op for up to eight players.

Military vehicles and battles
War Thunder is a free-to-play MMO focused on aviation, armored vehicles, and naval craft from World War II and the Cold War. It offers a vehicle-focused alternative to conventional shooter formats.

Other catalogue options
Xbox’s catalogue also surfaces Roblox, eFootball, Asphalt Legends, Rainbow Six Siege Free Access, Zenless Zone Zero, and other titles. The catalogue is a changing snapshot, not a guarantee that every listed game is offered in every region or will remain listed.
Want to keep playing the promoted game?
Buying the game is the route to continuing the specific experience after its Free Play Days window closes. In its October 2026 event post, Xbox Wire said players who purchased an event game could continue playing and retain Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event. The post also cautioned that discounts, percentages, and availability could vary by title and region, so check the individual store listing rather than assuming an event discount applies everywhere.

That post described one past event, not a promise about future Free Play Days offers. Event dates, included games, membership requirements, and purchase terms should be checked in each event’s current announcement.
What to know about online multiplayer and membership
In April 2021, Xbox announced that online multiplayer in supported free-to-play games would be available at no charge without Xbox Live Gold. Xbox said more than 50 free-to-play games supported online multiplayer under that change. That figure is historical, not a current catalogue total, and the announcement also noted that some free games did not support online multiplayer. For a specific game or feature, verify the current title details and Xbox membership terms before assuming multiplayer is included without a subscription.

Xbox’s catalogue provides listings and descriptions, but the reviewed material does not give current comparative player counts, a ranking method, or measured gameplay-performance figures. Its “most-played free games” heading should not be read as a dated, quantified ranking.
