Their catalogues change, so search for the exact series and episode before settling in. Check whether a title is free or paid, whether you’re watching live or on demand, and whether your viewing requires a TV Licence.
Where to look for free British comedy
No single service is established as having the largest or most complete British comedy catalogue. Broadcaster players are the most reliable starting points; Freeview’s directory can help you find them, though app and device availability varies.

BBC iPlayer
Check iPlayer for BBC comedies and box sets, but search for the specific title: the available sources do not establish a live, complete list of its comedy catalogue. A TV Licence is required to use BBC iPlayer, including for on-demand programmes. GOV.UK’s TV Licence guidance explains the rules.
ITVX
ITV describes ITVX as a free, advertising-supported service with comedy among its genres. The distinction to watch is the tier: ITV lists BritBox UK as part of ITVX Premium, so a BritBox title there is not necessarily available on the free tier. Channel 4 streaming and U
Channel 4 announced on 6 January 2026 that UKTV’s U service was available within Channel 4 streaming. The announcement named The Office, Red Dwarf, QI XL, Would I Lie to You?, Birds of a Feather and Not Going Out among its comedy examples. These are examples from a dated announcement, not a guarantee that every episode or season remains available now. Search the title in Channel 4 streaming.
Channel 5 streaming
Freeview’s directory lists the Channel 5 family’s on-demand app. The current-facing name is Channel 5’s streaming service; Ofcom says the service called My5 in its 2024 tracker was rebranded in March 2025. The sources reviewed do not establish a current comedy catalogue, so verify individual titles in the app rather than assuming a particular sitcom is there.
Use Freeview or Freely to find and watch services
Freeview
Freeview’s directory points viewers to broadcaster players including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Freeview Play also promotes comedy box sets. Coverage, compatible devices and player availability can vary by location and equipment, so confirm your setup before relying on a particular app.

Freely is a free, broadband-delivered route to live and on-demand television from participating broadcasters on compatible TVs. ITV’s launch announcement of 30 April 2024 described participation from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, with STV and S4C also expected to bring content, and named hardware partners. It is an optional access route, not a requirement for using the broadcaster apps or a separate guarantee that a particular comedy is available. ITV’s Freely launch announcement has the dated details.
Check these details before pressing play
- Search the exact title. Confirm the series, episode and seasons you want are listed now; rights and episode availability change.
- Confirm the tier. A service may offer free, ad-supported viewing as well as paid content. On ITVX, BritBox UK is part of Premium, not a promise of free access.
- Check live versus on demand. The TV Licence rule changes with the activity. GOV.UK says you need a licence to watch live TV on any service and to use BBC iPlayer. Its guidance says on-demand viewing through services such as All 4 does not require one.
- Account for adverts, login and device support. Free services may include adverts, and some apps or features may depend on a compatible television, streaming device or account.
- Use current service names and listings. In particular, look for Channel 5’s streaming service rather than relying on older My5 references.
What audience figures can—and cannot—tell you
Ofcom’s 2025 report, drawing on its 2024 Public Service Media Tracker, found that 79% of BBC iPlayer viewers surveyed were satisfied with the service; the figures were 72% for Channel 4 or Channel 4+ streaming viewers, 67% for ITVX or ITVX Premium viewers, and 66% for My5 viewers. Ofcom notes the My5 rebrand in March 2025. These are broad service-satisfaction results, not ratings of comedy libraries or evidence that one platform has better sitcoms.
In the same report, 60% of broadcaster video-on-demand viewers cited catching up on missed programmes as a reason for use, 50% cited watching when they wanted, and 41% cited specific programmes or box sets. Those survey reasons help explain why on-demand players are useful, but they do not establish the size or quality of any service’s British comedy selection. Be cautious with free, ad-supported TV channels
Free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) services such as Pluto TV may carry themed channels or older programmes, but a past listing is not a current catalogue guarantee. Ofcom recorded services including Pluto TV in its 2023 report and described an ITVX Classic Comedy channel at launch; that evidence does not verify whether the channel is still available today. Check a FAST service’s current listings for the specific programme rather than treating it as a dependable source of British comedy.
