If you want the most direct follow-up to Street Fighter, start with Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Choose the 1995 live-action Mortal Kombat for a tournament-oriented martial-arts film, or Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge for animated action and deeper Mortal Kombat lore. Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive are optional completist picks rather than essential next steps.
There is no single “best” fighting-game movie
The right choice depends on what you want after playing or watching Street Fighter. Some viewers want the same characters and a close connection to Capcom’s game. Others want a live-action tournament, a harder-edged animated film, or simply another adaptation of a well-known fighting-game roster.

The recommendations below are therefore a guided watchlist, not an objective ranking. The useful comparison points are the connection to the source game, animation versus live action, tone, how fights are presented, and how much prior knowledge helps. The available editorial roundups from Den of Geek and JustWatch support including these films, but they do not provide a shared scoring system or a measurable definition of “best.”
1. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the closest next watch
Why it belongs first
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the natural first stop because it stays within the same fictional world instead of asking you to learn a new fighting-game universe. It is the choice for someone who wants more Street Fighter characters, an animated presentation, and a film that feels adjacent to the game rather than merely inspired by the genre.

Capcom’s 2012 annual report lists an animated movie titled Street Fighter II in August 1994. The report is an official company record, although its table does not supply the film’s complete title or evaluate it. The longer title used in film listings is Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie; the annual report is best treated as confirmation of the franchise’s 1994 animated-film release rather than as a review or a detailed release-history source.
That timing follows the game’s early-1990s importance. Capcom’s official Street Fighter II: The World Warrior history says the game first appeared in arcades in 1991. That establishes the game’s historical context, not a precise release date for the movie. Keeping those facts separate avoids turning a company timeline into a claim it does not make.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if: you want the most direct franchise follow-up, recognizable Street Fighter material, and animation rather than actors in costumes.
- It works best for: viewers who already know the game’s basic premise and want a movie-length extension of that world.
- Do not expect: a neutral introduction to every fighting-game series. Its value is its Street Fighter connection, not its role as a survey of the genre.
How much game knowledge is needed?
You can watch it without memorizing arcade moves or knowing every character. Familiarity with Street Fighter II makes the adaptation relationship easier to appreciate, but it is not a technical tutorial. If your priority is a completely separate live-action experience, move to Mortal Kombat instead.
2. Mortal Kombat (1995) is the live-action tournament route
What makes it a different choice
The 1995 Mortal Kombat film changes nearly every variable that matters in this comparison: it is live action, it comes from a different game universe, and its appeal is built around a tournament-style martial-arts adventure rather than a direct continuation of Street Fighter. It is the clearest recommendation when your main request is “a fighting-game movie with real actors and a tournament framework.”

That makes it a useful companion to Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, not a replacement for it. The two films answer different viewing needs. One preserves the franchise link and animated format; the other demonstrates how a fighting-game roster can be translated into live action.
When it is the best fit
- Pick it for live action: the physical sets, costumes, performers and choreography give the fights a different texture from animation.
- Pick it for tournament structure: if you want the match-to-match progression associated with fighting-game play, this is the most obvious option in the core list.
- Pick it as a time-capsule watch: its 1995 production context is part of the experience, so approach it as a period adaptation rather than expecting current action-film conventions.
What it does not establish
Including the film does not prove that it is objectively superior to the animated recommendations, nor does it establish a universal critical or audience consensus. The film is recommended here because its format and tournament emphasis answer a particular viewer request. Warner Bros.’ promotional material for the franchise is available through its official Mortal Kombat campaign page, while the broader inclusion of the title in fighting-game movie guides comes from secondary editorial coverage.
3. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) is the modern animated alternative
Why choose it instead of the 1995 film?
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge gives you another Mortal Kombat entry without repeating the live-action approach. JustWatch describes it as a lore-focused animated adaptation centered on Scorpion. That makes it the strongest recommendation here for viewers who want animation, a contemporary action style, and more emphasis on a central character’s mythology.
It is not the closest continuation of Street Fighter; Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie holds that position. Its role in this list is to show a different way of adapting a fighting game: animated world-building and character lore rather than a 1990s live-action tournament film.

Who should watch it?
- Choose it if: you prefer animation but want a more contemporary Mortal Kombat presentation.
- Choose it for lore: Scorpion is the center of the adaptation according to JustWatch’s editorial description.
- Choose it after the 1995 film: watching both lets you compare live action and animation within the same game franchise.
How much prior knowledge helps?
Some familiarity with Mortal Kombat can make its lore references easier to follow, but the reason to select it is its focused animated approach, not a requirement to complete a game series first. If you want only Street Fighter characters, stay with the first recommendation; if you want a different roster and animated action, this is the more suitable detour.
At-a-glance comparison
| Film | Format | Best for | Connection to Street Fighter | Prior knowledge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie | Animated | The closest franchise-adjacent follow-up and more Street Fighter material | Directly connected to Street Fighter; Capcom’s 2012 report lists an animated Street Fighter II movie in August 1994 | Helpful but not essential |
| Mortal Kombat (1995) | Live action | A tournament-oriented martial-arts adaptation | Different franchise and characters | Useful for context, not required |
| Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) | Animated | Animated action and Scorpion-focused lore | Different franchise and characters | Some Mortal Kombat familiarity may help |
| Tekken | Live action | Completists exploring other fighting-game adaptations | Different franchise and characters | Not stated in the reviewed guides |
| DOA: Dead or Alive | Live action | Completists looking beyond the core recommendations | Different franchise and characters | Not stated in the reviewed guides |
The table deliberately compares format and viewing purpose rather than assigning scores. The available sources do not verify a common rating method, audience survey, performance statistic or critic-consensus number for these films.
Optional picks for fighting-game completists
Tekken
Tekken appears in broader fighting-game movie roundups as another live-action adaptation. It is worth placing on a completionist list if your goal is to see how multiple game rosters have been translated to film. The reviewed material does not establish enough detail about its plot, reception or fight design to support a stronger recommendation, so it sits outside the core three choices.

DOA: Dead or Alive
DOA: Dead or Alive serves a similar purpose. It is an optional curiosity for viewers mapping the genre’s adaptations rather than the answer to a specific Street Fighter-related need. The available editorial source supports its presence in a fighting-game movie roundup, but not a detailed plot or quality assessment. Treat it as an exploratory extra after the more clearly defined choices above.

Choose your next film in three steps
- Decide whether the franchise must remain Street Fighter. If yes, watch Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. If no, continue to the format choice.
- Choose live action or animation. Select Mortal Kombat (1995) for live action and a tournament-oriented martial-arts setup. Select Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge for animation and Scorpion-focused lore.
- Use the optional titles only if you want breadth. Add Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive when your objective is to sample the wider fighting-game adaptation field, not to find a closer Street Fighter match.
A practical viewing order
For most viewers, this order keeps the comparison clear:
- Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie — establishes the closest connection to the game you started with.
- Mortal Kombat (1995) — switches to live action and a different fighting-game universe.
- Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) — returns to animation while showing a more lore-centered Mortal Kombat approach.
- Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive — optional extras for comparison and completion.
If your only interest is live action, begin with Mortal Kombat and then sample the optional titles. If your only interest is animation, begin with the Street Fighter film and follow it with Scorpion’s Revenge.
What to compare while you watch
Adaptation fidelity
Ask how much the film appears designed to preserve the identity of its game. A direct franchise connection is the main reason to begin with the Street Fighter animated movie. The Mortal Kombat films are better viewed as separate demonstrations of adaptation choices: one emphasizes live action, while the other foregrounds animated lore around Scorpion.
Animation versus live action
Animation can stage action without the physical limitations of a live set and can keep a game-like visual language. Live action gives choreography, performers and production design a more tangible presence. Neither format is automatically better; the choice depends on whether you want stylized movement or a physical-world interpretation.
Best Value
Tone and fight presentation
The most useful question is not “Which film wins?” but “What kind of fight film do I want tonight?” The 1995 Mortal Kombat recommendation is for tournament-oriented martial arts. Scorpion’s Revenge is for animated action and lore. The Street Fighter movie is for staying with the characters and universe that prompted your search.
How much background is useful?
Existing game knowledge can make character and world references more rewarding, but none of these recommendations should be treated as requiring a complete game playthrough. Start with the title whose format and franchise match your interest; use background information as an enhancement rather than a barrier.
Availability changes by country and date
Streaming, rental and retail catalogs vary by territory and change over time. The sources used for this guide do not establish a current service, price or physical-media listing for any individual film. Before starting a movie, search the title in your country’s major rental, purchase and streaming catalogs and confirm whether the listing is for the exact film, not a similarly named game or sequel.
Do not confuse the upcoming new Street Fighter movie with a currently available recommendation. Capcom’s official promotion lists a worldwide release date of October 16, 2026, with Kitao Sakurai directing: Capcom’s 2026 Street Fighter movie announcement. As of the date of this guide, that release is still upcoming and is not a film you can watch as part of this list.
The short answer
Watch Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie when you want the closest continuation of the franchise. Choose Mortal Kombat (1995) for live-action tournament martial arts, or Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) for animated, Scorpion-centered Mortal Kombat lore. Save Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive for a later completist tour, and verify availability in your territory on the day you plan to watch.
