These are practical choices rather than laboratory claims about sound quality or battery savings. Fairphone publishes the runtime figures and connection features, but not controlled results for every combination of volume, codec, firmware version, or multipoint state.

How Fairbuds 2 Bluetooth connections work
Bluetooth 6.0 and ordinary pairing
Fairbuds 2 uses Bluetooth 6.0 and supports standard Bluetooth operation. It can therefore be paired from the normal Bluetooth settings on an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, tablet, or computer. You do not need the Fairbuds app merely to establish a connection or play audio.
On a compatible Android phone, Google Fast Pair can offer the quickest initial setup. When the Fast Pair prompt appears, accept it and follow the on-screen instructions. If no prompt appears, use manual pairing instead.
Dual multipoint: when to leave it on
Fairphone says Fairbuds 2 can save up to six devices and keep two devices active at the same time. That is useful for a common phone-and-laptop arrangement: music can come from the phone, while a meeting or notification on the computer can take priority without requiring a complete re-pair.
Leave dual multipoint enabled if you switch between two active sources throughout the day. If you use only one source, avoiding multipoint is a reasonable simplicity choice because it reduces the number of connection relationships you have to manage. Fairphone does not publish a controlled battery-saving figure for disabling multipoint, so do not treat it as a measured runtime upgrade.
Pairing procedure
- Charge the earbuds and case enough to complete setup without interruption.
- Place the earbuds in pairing mode according to the supplied Fairbuds 2 quick-start guide.
- On Android, accept Google Fast Pair if it appears. Otherwise open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the Fairbuds entry.
- On iOS, open Settings, select Bluetooth, and choose the Fairbuds entry when it appears.
- Repeat the standard Bluetooth procedure on a second device only if you need multipoint or additional saved devices.
- After the first connection, test audio from each source before relying on automatic switching for calls or meetings.
The exact button sequence for entering pairing mode should be taken from the Fairbuds 2 quick-start guide rather than guessed from another Fairbuds model. Hardware controls and firmware behavior can differ between generations.
Managing six saved devices and two active connections
Saving several devices is convenient, but it can also make it harder to tell which source currently owns the connection. Keep the devices you actually use—such as a phone, work laptop, tablet, or personal computer—paired, and remove obsolete entries from their Bluetooth menus when they are no longer needed.

For a two-device workflow, connect the earbuds to both sources, then start playback on the source you want. If switching behaves unexpectedly, pause audio on the first device before starting it on the second. Some operating systems hold an audio session open even when no sound is audible, so closing a media app or disconnecting that source can make the handoff predictable.

Fixing a Fairbuds 2 pairing or multipoint problem
Most connection failures are stale Bluetooth records or a second device retaining the earbuds. Use this recovery sequence before resetting unrelated phone settings.
- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices that may still be connected to Fairbuds 2, or explicitly disconnect the earbuds from those devices.
- Open the phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings and choose the Fairbuds entry’s Forget, Remove, or Unpair command.
- Put the earbuds back into pairing mode using the Fairbuds 2 quick-start instructions.
- Pair again from the device’s Bluetooth menu, or accept Google Fast Pair on a compatible Android phone.
- Once the first device is stable, add the second device and test multipoint switching.
Fairphone documents this forget-and-pair-again approach for the Fairbuds family. If the earbuds never appear after the old record is removed, consult the Fairbuds 2 quick-start guide for the model-specific button sequence and reset instructions. Do not assume a sequence published for a different generation is interchangeable.
When to avoid multipoint temporarily
Disable or bypass dual multipoint while diagnosing a connection that repeatedly drops, refuses to switch, or connects to the wrong source. A single-device test separates a basic Bluetooth problem from a multi-device handoff problem. Re-enable multipoint after the one-device connection remains stable.
Choosing and adjusting the Fairbuds 2 EQ
Start with one of the four presets
The Fairbuds app for iOS and Android includes four prepared equalizer presets. A preset is the fastest way to change the overall character of the earbuds while keeping the result repeatable across listening sessions. Start there before moving every control manually.

Presets are especially useful when several people use the same earbuds, when you move between music and speech, or when you want a known baseline after troubleshooting. Choose the preset that sounds closest to your normal material, then make a small change only if a specific problem remains.

Use the five-band custom EQ for a specific preference
The app also provides a five-band adjustable equalizer. Custom EQ makes sense when you consistently want more low-end weight, clearer vocals, or a different treble balance than the presets provide. Fairphone confirms the five-band control, but the published information does not state the bands’ center frequencies or provide recommended numeric curves. Any exact frequency values or “best” slider positions found elsewhere should therefore be treated as someone else’s preference, not an official Fairbuds 2 specification.
Make one change at a time and listen to familiar tracks or speech. Large boosts can make a desired range louder while masking another range, and extreme cuts can make the result sound thin. If a change helps only one recording, return to the preset rather than building an increasingly complicated profile around that recording.
Practical EQ workflow
- Install or open the Fairbuds app on iOS or Android.
- Select a prepared preset and listen to several familiar tracks, a spoken podcast, and a phone call if calls are part of your normal use.
- If the preset is close but not quite right, open the five-band custom EQ.
- Adjust the smallest number of bands needed for the problem you can describe—for example, bass weight, vocal presence, or treble brightness.
- Save the profile with a clear name if the app offers profile saving, and keep only a few intentional profiles.
- Compare the custom profile with the original preset at the same listening level before deciding which one to keep.
Do not use EQ to compensate for a poor Bluetooth connection, a blocked earbud grille, or an incorrectly seated earbud. Those issues can change perceived balance and lead you to create an exaggerated profile that sounds wrong after the underlying problem is fixed.
ANC, ambient sound, or ANC off?
ANC off: the runtime-first choice
Use ANC off when you are in a quiet room, working at home, or trying to get the longest published playback time from each charge. Fairphone rates Fairbuds 2 at up to 8 hours with ANC off. “Up to” is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every listener or every volume and firmware combination.
ANC on: isolation in loud places
ANC is the better choice on trains, aircraft, buses, and noisy open-plan offices when reducing background noise matters more than maximum runtime. Fairphone’s published rating is up to 6 hours with ANC on, so the stated trade-off is up to two fewer hours per earbud charge than the ANC-off figure.
Because ANC changes the listening environment, it can let you hear music or speech clearly without trying to overpower background noise. Keep the volume comfortable; the runtime specification does not establish a safe or optimal volume setting.

Ambient sound: awareness without a published runtime figure
Ambient sound is the awareness mode for walking, waiting for announcements, speaking with colleagues, or monitoring nearby activity. Fairphone does not provide a separate battery-life figure for ambient mode in the published material used here, so do not assign it the ANC-on or ANC-off runtime.

The figures are Fairphone ratings and an advertised quick-charge result. The available specifications do not give controlled results by codec, volume, firmware, or multipoint state, so shorter real-world runtime does not by itself identify a fault.
Use the case as the default parking place
Put the earbuds in their charging case whenever you are finished listening. The case is what enables the published up-to-40-hour total, and it prevents the earbuds from remaining active in a pocket or bag. Check that both earbuds are seated correctly so charging contacts engage.
Let the 15-minute auto-off protect against idle drain
Fairbuds 2 automatically powers off after 15 minutes. This safeguard reduces accidental drain when the earbuds are left running without useful playback. It is not a substitute for the case: use the case for storage and charging, and regard auto-off as protection against forgetfulness.
Choosing between ANC and battery life
When a long day away from a charger is the priority, select ANC off and carry the charged case. When you are in sustained noise, ANC can be the more efficient listening decision even though its rated runtime is lower, because isolation may make speech or music intelligible at a comfortable level. The choice is about your environment, not a claim that ANC always saves or wastes a fixed amount of energy.

Four useful everyday profiles
Phone and laptop during a workday
Pair both devices, keep dual multipoint enabled, and use a familiar EQ preset. Select ANC in a noisy office or ambient sound when you need to hear colleagues. When connection handoffs become confusing, pause media on the inactive device and verify that the intended source is the one currently playing.
Commuting by train or bus
Use ANC on for the journey, accepting the published up-to-6-hour ANC-on rating. Keep the case charged so a short stop can restore playback; Fairphone advertises about 2 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge.
Walking and waiting for announcements
Use ambient sound and keep the volume at a level that does not mask nearby speech. If you need to concentrate on a podcast in a quiet place, ANC off may provide the longest rated runtime, but switch back to ambient sound before entering a situation where awareness matters.
Quiet-room listening
Start with ANC off, choose one of the four presets, and use the five-band custom EQ only if the preset fails to match your preference. This profile avoids spending battery on noise cancellation you do not need.
What the published specifications do not establish
Fairphone confirms the Bluetooth version, multipoint capacity, app platforms, EQ controls, presets, noise-control runtime ratings, case total, quick-charge claim, and 15-minute auto-off. It does not publish exact EQ band centers, official numeric EQ curves, a separate ambient-mode battery rating, or controlled battery tests split by codec, volume, firmware, and multipoint state.
That distinction matters when diagnosing your own results. Battery life below the “up to” figure can reflect listening volume, radio conditions, the selected noise mode, software version, temperature, or the number of active connections. Use the published numbers to choose a mode and plan charging, not as a promise that every session will reach the maximum.
A simple decision tree for the best setting
- If you use Android and see Google Fast Pair, accept it; otherwise pair through the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- If you regularly switch between a phone and a computer, keep dual multipoint enabled. If not, use a single source while troubleshooting or when simplicity is more important than instant switching.
- Choose one of the four app presets first. Move to the five-band custom EQ only for a repeatable bass, vocal, or treble preference.
- Set ANC off in quiet places or when the longest rated runtime matters.
- Set ANC on in sustained noise when isolation is worth the up-to-6-hour rating.
- Set ambient sound when you need environmental awareness; Fairphone does not state a separate runtime for this mode.
- Return the earbuds to the case after use, and use the advertised 10-minute quick charge when you need roughly two hours of additional playback.
For most owners, this produces a stable setup without chasing undocumented EQ numbers or assuming an unverified battery gain from multipoint changes. The app adds control, but Fairbuds 2 remains usable as standard Bluetooth earbuds when you prefer a simpler setup.
