Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe safest early plan in Valor Mortis is to buy a survival margin first, keep enough Endurance for complete attack-and-defense sequences, and only then specialize in melee, firearms or Transmutations. There is no developer-verified universal “best first skill.” Your strongest build depends on how consistently you can parry, dodge, exploit weak points and manage scarce ammunition.
How Valor Mortis expects you to fight
Valor Mortis links melee pressure, firearms and resource recovery into one combat loop. Blades and parries damage enemy posture; a posture break creates an opening for a heavy attack or finisher. Firearms are most valuable when aimed at exposed weak points. Weak-point hits restore nephtoglobin (also called nephto), and defeated enemies often return ammunition, allowing accurate shooting to feed the next opening.

- Use attacks and parries to break posture, then follow with a heavy attack or powerful finisher.
- Do not assume an attack can be canceled into a parry. Attack animations commit you, so start a swing only when you have room to finish it.
- On weapons that support it, a clean parry enables a counterattack. A perfect dodge briefly slows time and can create another punish window.
- A counterattack immediately after blocking restores the health lost while blocking, making a well-timed block a recovery option rather than only damage reduction.
- Firearms are limited. Aim down sights at glowing weak points, shoot explosive barrels carried by some enemies, and hit glowing red-orange nodes when they reveal blocked routes.
- Fire Transmutation sets targets alight and leaves them open to finishers.
Blocking reduces incoming damage at an Endurance cost, while dodging can evade ranged and heavy attacks. Endurance is also spent on attacking and sprinting, so a large pool helps only if you still learn the timing of each action.

What to level first
The following order combines the practical early-game guidance available from secondary progression references with the combat interactions described in the official Xbox Wire launch guide. The health-first recommendation is guidance, not an official balance ranking.

| Priority | What to improve | Why it helps early | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maximum Health | Gives you more attempts to learn parry, dodge and posture-break timing before a mistake ends the encounter. | Every new player, especially while learning bosses. |
| 2 | Maximum Endurance | Supports a complete sequence of swings, dodges, blocks and sprints instead of leaving you exhausted after one action. | Players who block, dodge frequently or use mixed weapons. |
| 3 | Melee Damage | Improves the blade-and-parry pressure that breaks posture and creates finisher opportunities. | Blade-focused builds that stay close to enemies. |
| 4 | Build-specific attributes | Lets you commit to firearms, Transmutations or another specialization after your basic survival margin is established. | Players who already know the range and resource costs of their preferred style. |
Why health comes before damage
The Valor Mortis Guide & Wiki progression advice places Maximum Health first because additional attempts are particularly valuable while you are still reading attack animations. More health does not excuse greedy swings, but it makes experimentation with parries and finishers less punishing.
Why Endurance is the second foundation
A depleted Endurance bar can prevent the dodge that would have saved you, the block that would have absorbed a hit, or the follow-up that converts a posture break into damage. The Valor Mortis DB leveling reference recommends early Maximum Stamina alongside health. Treat it as an action-economy investment, not as a substitute for learning when to stop attacking.

When to add damage
Once you can survive a mistake and complete your normal action cycle, add Melee Damage if blades are your main source of posture pressure. The same secondary guide then suggests build-dependent choices. The mechanics reference describes Might as the attribute associated with health and melee damage, Endurance as the attribute tied to maximum Endurance, regeneration and firearm damage, and Sufferance as the attribute tied to Transmutation damage and nephtoglobin tolerance. These descriptions explain the direction of a build; they are not a verified universal ranking or a promise of particular damage numbers.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpend Catalysts before a risky run
Level-ups are purchased with Catalysts at a Lantern, according to the secondary leveling reference. That guide also says unspent Catalysts are lost on death until recovered. In practice, use a Lantern when you have enough for a meaningful upgrade rather than carrying a large balance into an unfamiliar arena. Its demo-derived cost table should not be treated as the current launch economy.

Since the Devil's Fevers pandemic ravaged the city, it was abandoned, and now only horrific nightmares await there.

Choose Ambers for a deliberate trade-off
Ambers are slotted at a Lantern, and leveling William increases how many you can equip. The official launch guidance does not establish that every named Amber is available in the opening hours or provide a complete unlock order, so regard the following as examples of combat direction rather than guaranteed first pickups.
| Amber | Effect | Trade-off and ideal user |
|---|---|---|
| Marksman’s Bane | Allows bullet parries; each successful bullet parry grants a Pistol round. | Strong for players who can read ranged attacks and reliably parry them. Missed timing gives you no benefit, so it is not a substitute for learning enemy tells. |
| Volatile End | A weak-point shot causes a damaging explosion. | Rewards precise firearm use and clustered targets. It is most useful when you can expose weak points without wasting ammunition. |
| Butcher’s Carnage | Melee strikes restore health. | Offers aggressive sustain, but Ferrofluid Flasks can no longer heal. Choose it only if you accept the healing restriction and intend to stay on the offensive. |
These effects are not interchangeable upgrades. Marksman’s Bane asks you to parry bullets, Volatile End asks you to aim carefully, and Butcher’s Carnage changes your healing rules. If a boss fight is failing, change the Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory items you bring rather than assuming one Amber works everywhere.

Match the build to your combat habits
Blade-and-parry pressure
Prioritize health, Endurance and then Melee Damage. Attack only when you can finish the animation, use parries to damage posture, and reserve heavy attacks or finishers for the resulting break. Butcher’s Carnage can support this style if you are comfortable giving up Ferrofluid Flask healing.
Firearm precision
Keep a safe Endurance reserve for dodges, then use firearms on glowing weak points rather than firing into armor. Weak-point hits restore nephtoglobin and kills can replenish ammunition, so accuracy is part of the resource economy. Volatile End complements this approach; Marksman’s Bane is better when ranged parries are already reliable.

- Perfect puzzling: Puzzles slowly increase in complexity enabling seamless progression and rewarding exploration.
Transmutation control
The mechanics reference links Sufferance to Transmutation damage and nephtoglobin tolerance. Fire Transmutation can ignite enemies and expose them to finishers, but it consumes nephtoglobin. Use it to create a planned opening instead of spending the resource whenever an enemy is merely visible.
Mixed defense
Health and Endurance make the most forgiving foundation for players who alternate blocking and dodging. Remember that blocking costs Endurance and that the post-block counterattack can restore the health lost while blocking. This style is strongest when you counter promptly rather than holding block indefinitely.
Explore to find more options
The game uses metroidvania-like progression. Later abilities can open rooms and routes you already passed, and levels may contain combat arenas at different heights, shortcuts, alternate paths, optional areas, echoes, journal pages and hidden mini-bosses. Revisit earlier spaces after gaining mobility or another traversal ability, and inspect side paths for Ambers. The launch guidance warns that you are unlikely to find every Amber in a single playthrough, so do not delay a build waiting for one specific effect.

Common early mistakes and fixes
- Greedy swings: Because attacks cannot be canceled into a parry, stop attacking sooner and wait for a confirmed opening.
- Empty Endurance: Leave enough resource for one defensive action after your planned attack string.
- Wasted ammunition: Aim down sights and wait for lambent blisters or other glowing weak points; use explosive barrels when an enemy carries one.
- Ignoring recovery: After blocking, counterattack immediately when safe to reclaim the health lost during the block.
- Carrying Catalysts too long: Visit a Lantern before a difficult unexplored section so a death does not delay your next upgrade.
- Forcing one setup: Swap Transmutations, firearms and inventory items when a fight repeatedly stalls; the combat system is designed for changing plans.
Valor Mortis is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, according to the October 13, 2026 Xbox Wire launch guidance. Availability can vary by market.
