For the clearest footsteps in Dying Light, first route the game to the device you are actually wearing or listening through. Then match the game’s output mode to that hardware: use stereo output for ordinary two-channel headphones, and use surround only when your headset and platform genuinely support surround processing. On PS5, test Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) after the in-game output is correct. Lower music and other competing sounds before raising overall volume, and treat EQ as optional experimentation rather than a proven Dying Light preset.

The correct setup in one minute

Directional audio depends on a chain of devices and settings, not one magic volume slider. Use this order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Confirm the physical output. Select the headset, headphones, TV, or receiver you are actually using. Techland Support says missing sound is often caused by Dying Light sending video audio to a different or unplugged output.
  2. Match the channel mode. Ordinary two-channel headphones should use the game’s stereo-headphone or equivalent stereo output. A surround-capable headset should use its supported surround mode.
  3. Avoid unsupported processing. Do not select surround simply because a product is marketed as a gaming headset. The hardware and platform must support the processing for localization to work as intended.
  4. On PS5, test 3D audio. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) after correcting the in-game output.
  5. Clear the mix. Reduce music, dialogue, or other effects controls when your version exposes them. The goal is more contrast around footsteps, not simply a louder master volume.

There is no official, universal Dying Light footstep slider or published Dying Light-specific EQ curve. If you change EQ, consider the result a personal experiment and keep a way to return to a neutral profile.

Why footsteps disappear or seem to come from the wrong direction

The game is using the wrong output

A game can be audible while still sending some audio to the wrong endpoint. For example, a headset may be connected but the game may remain assigned to TV speakers, a disconnected USB device, or another output exposed by the operating system or console. You may hear a faint or partial signal, while directional information is missing or inconsistent.

Techland’s support guidance identifies a different or unplugged audio output as a common cause of missing sound in Dying Light. Make output routing your first check before changing volume, difficulty, or EQ. Verify the device selected in the game and the device selected in the platform or system audio controls. If you switch from a TV to a headset, re-check the selection rather than assuming the game followed automatically.

The channel mode does not match the headphones

Standard headphones have two physical channels: left and right. They still can present convincing three-dimensional cues through binaural processing, but the game must send an appropriate stereo signal. Official headphone guidance warns that localization becomes inaccurate when the selected game mode does not match stereo headphones.

A surround mode is not a universal upgrade. If the game is producing multichannel output while your actual path is only two-channel, a conversion layer may collapse or reinterpret the cues. Sounds can become wider but less precise, with a Volatile or Biter seeming to move around rather than approach from a stable side.

Too many spatial processors are active

Spatial processing can occur in the game, the console or computer, the headset software, and sometimes the television or receiver. Each layer may apply its own virtual room, HRTF, downmix, or channel expansion. More processing does not automatically mean better positioning.

For a clean baseline, use one intentional spatial path. With ordinary stereo headphones, start with the game’s stereo output and no additional surround virtualization. With a genuinely surround-capable device, use the matching game mode and the device’s supported processing, then compare it with a simpler configuration. On PS5, treat the console’s 3D headphone setting as a separate option to test rather than stacking every available effect indiscriminately.

The mix is masking the cue

Footsteps occupy a narrow part of the overall mix. Loud music, dialogue, combat effects, wind, or explosions can cover them even when the output is correctly routed. If your Dying Light version provides separate controls, reduce the competing categories first. A lower music level often reveals more useful information than raising the master volume, because it preserves headroom for sudden impacts.

Step-by-step setup for headphones

Step 1: Identify what you are actually listening through

Write down the complete path from the game to your ears. It might be a console connected directly to a wired headset, a USB headset, a controller headphone jack, a TV feeding headphones, or a receiver feeding speakers. This matters because each path may expose different channel and spatial options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For headphones, determine whether the device is ordinary two-channel stereo or has a real surround/3D mode supported by its hardware and platform.
  • For a TV or soundbar, note whether it is receiving stereo or multichannel audio and whether it applies its own virtual surround mode.
  • If you recently changed devices, restart the game after selecting the new output so the game has a chance to reopen its audio session.

Step 2: Correct the output assignment

Open Dying Light’s audio controls and select the output device that is connected and in use. If the platform or operating system also has an audio-output panel, make the same device the active endpoint there. Techland specifically recommends switching to the headset or other working device when the game has selected a different or unplugged output.

Test a menu sound or a short movement sequence immediately after changing the output. If the signal is silent, intermittent, or coming from the wrong physical device, stop and fix routing before touching spatial settings.

Step 3: Choose stereo for ordinary headphones

For standard two-channel headphones, choose the game’s stereo-headphone option or its equivalent stereo output. This is the correct baseline for left-right localization. It also gives you a reference point for judging any console or headset processing you add later.

Do not choose a multichannel setting just because your headphones are sold as “gaming” headphones. The relevant question is whether the device and platform support the selected surround path, not how the product is described on its packaging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Use surround only with matching hardware

If your headset genuinely supports surround or 3D processing, select the corresponding supported surround mode in Dying Light and enable the device feature that receives that signal. The mode must match the channel capability exposed by the physical device and platform.

Compare the result with the stereo baseline using the same volume and the same scene. Keep the mode that gives you a stable front, side, and rear image. A wider presentation is not useful if a sound’s direction shifts when you turn your character or if rear cues become vague.

Step 5: Test PS5 3D Audio for Headphones

On PS5, after the in-game output is correct, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Sony describes this feature as making it possible to hear approaching footsteps from the exact direction of an enemy. Enable it, run the same repeatable test, and compare it with the feature disabled.

Use the setting that gives you the most consistent direction at a comfortable level. If you use another virtual-surround feature in the headset at the same time, test both combinations rather than assuming they complement one another. Two spatial algorithms can obscure the original cue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Reduce competing categories

Use the separate music, dialogue, and effects controls exposed by your edition of Dying Light. Lower music first if it dominates exploration, then reduce dialogue or nonessential effects when they cover movement sounds. Keep the cue-producing effects category high enough to hear combat reactions, but do not compensate for poor routing by pushing every slider to maximum.

Menu names and available sliders can differ between Dying Light releases and platforms. If your version has no separate footstep control, that is normal; the cited official guidance does not document a universal Dying Light footstep-volume slider.

Step 7: Set a safe listening level

Raise volume only until quiet footsteps are audible in a calm scene. Sudden explosions and screams should remain tolerable without reaching for the volume control. If impacts are painful, lower the master level and reduce masking categories rather than increasing volume further. Safe, sustainable listening is more valuable than a temporarily louder cue.

Choosing between TV speakers, stereo headphones, and surround headsets

Setup Best starting game mode Spatial-processing approach Main strengths Main limitations
TV speakers Stereo, unless the TV and connected system explicitly support multichannel output Keep the TV’s virtual surround off for the baseline; test it separately if available Comfortable, no headset isolation, easy for shared play Room reflections and speaker spacing can blur quiet or rear cues
Ordinary two-channel headphones Stereo-headphone or equivalent stereo output Start with one stereo path; add platform processing only as a controlled test Direct, isolated signal and usually clearer left-right detail Incorrect surround selection can make localization inaccurate
Surround-capable headset The matching supported surround mode Match the game mode to the headset and platform; avoid unplanned duplicate processing Can provide a stronger front/back impression when correctly configured Results vary by hardware, profile, fit, and processing layers
PS5 headphones with 3D Audio tested Correct in-game mode for the physical device Compare PS5 Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) on and off PS5 exposes a documented directional-audio option for headphone users It is a platform feature to test, not proof that every headset profile will sound better

Isolation and comfort also affect practical performance. A headset that becomes uncomfortable after 20 minutes will make you play at a poor level or remove it entirely. Choose the configuration you can use consistently, then optimize its routing and mode.

How to tell whether the setting is working

Use a repeatable movement test

  1. Choose a quiet area with predictable enemy activity rather than a major combat set piece.
  2. Stand still and listen for an enemy approaching from one side. Keep the volume unchanged.
  3. Turn your character slowly toward the sound. A useful setup should make the apparent direction move smoothly rather than jump between front and rear.
  4. Repeat with the enemy on the opposite side. This checks whether left and right are reversed or uneven.
  5. Run the same test after changing only one setting, such as stereo versus surround or PS5 3D Audio on versus off.

Do not judge a mode from one explosion or one scripted scene. Weather, combat noise, enemy animations, room acoustics, and the game’s mix can all alter what you hear. The useful result is the setting that stays predictable across several ordinary encounters.

Check front and rear discrimination

Many players can identify left and right but struggle to distinguish a sound directly behind them. Face a wall or another fixed landmark, let a nearby enemy move around you, and note whether the cue remains anchored to the correct side as you rotate. If the sound appears to orbit unpredictably, return to the stereo baseline and verify that only one spatial processor is active.

Check low-volume detail

Set a comfortable volume, then listen during exploration rather than turning the game up for the test. If quiet footsteps vanish until impacts become painfully loud, the problem is likely masking or an unsuitable mix rather than insufficient maximum volume. Lower music and unnecessary categories, verify routing, and retest.

What to do when you still cannot locate a Volatile or Biter

You hear nothing at all

  • Confirm that Dying Light is assigned to the connected output, not an unplugged or unused device.
  • Check the platform or system output as well as the in-game selection.
  • Test the same headphones with another application to rule out a cable, mute, or hardware problem.
  • Restart the game after changing the endpoint if the new device is not detected.

You hear footsteps but cannot place them

  • Use stereo output if the headphones are ordinary two-channel models.
  • If the headset supports surround, verify that the game mode and device mode describe the same channel capability.
  • Disable extra virtual-surround layers temporarily and compare against the stereo baseline.
  • On PS5, test 3D Audio (Headphones) separately rather than enabling every spatial feature at once.

Explosions are too painful before footsteps are clear

  • Lower the master volume to a sustainable level.
  • Reduce music, dialogue, or other competing categories exposed by your version.
  • Keep the effects category at a moderate level and retest in a quiet area.
  • Do not rely on a guessed EQ boost. No cited official source publishes a universal Dying Light footstep EQ preset.

The direction changes between play sessions

Check whether the platform, headset profile, TV mode, or game output reverted after reconnecting hardware. A headset can expose different modes depending on whether it is connected directly to the console, through a controller, or through a television. Re-establish the same output path and spatial mode before comparing performance.

Difficulty and game-version changes affect enemy hearing

Audio localization and enemy detection are separate systems. Even a correctly configured headset cannot make an enemy react outside the rules used by the current difficulty and game build.

Techland’s Nightmare Mode update states that the range at which Biters hear the player’s footsteps was reduced. That means Biter hearing behavior can differ by difficulty and by game version. If an enemy does not detect you at the distance you expected, do not assume the headset is malfunctioning; the detection range may have changed. Conversely, hearing a cue does not guarantee that the enemy has detected you, because the audible mix and the AI hearing threshold are different mechanics.

When comparing two sessions, record the difficulty, game version, output device, and spatial mode. Otherwise, a change in enemy behavior may be mistaken for an audio-setting improvement.

EQ: useful experiment, not a universal answer

An equalizer can change the balance between low, middle, and high frequencies, but the available controls differ by headset, platform, and software. Because no cited official source provides a Dying Light-specific footstep curve, there is no evidence-based set of frequency values that can be called the best setting for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you experiment, change one band at a time and keep adjustments small. Compare the altered profile with a flat or neutral profile in the same scene. Stop if the change makes explosions, alarms, or voices harsh, or if it makes direction less stable. Save the original profile so you can undo the experiment quickly.

EQ cannot repair an incorrectly selected output or a channel mismatch. Fix routing and mode first; only then decide whether tonal balance is worth adjusting for your ears and room.

A practical decision tree

  • No audio: inspect the selected output in Dying Light and the platform or system. Look for a different or unplugged device.
  • Audio from the wrong physical device: select the headset, TV, or receiver you are actually using, then restart the game if necessary.
  • Footsteps audible but direction unreliable on ordinary headphones: select stereo output and remove unnecessary surround processing.
  • Footsteps unclear on a surround-capable headset: confirm that the game, headset, and platform all support and use the same surround path.
  • PS5 user unsure which mode is clearer: compare PS5 3D Audio (Headphones) on and off after correcting the in-game output.
  • Quiet cues masked by loud action: lower music, dialogue, and other competing controls before raising the master volume.
  • Enemy behavior differs from expectations: check difficulty and game version, especially when comparing Nightmare Mode with other settings.

Recommended baseline profiles

Two-channel headphones

Select the correct headset output, use stereo-headphone output in Dying Light, keep extra surround layers off initially, and lower music until exploration sounds are easy to distinguish. This is the most reliable starting point for ordinary headphones.

Surround-capable headset

Select the actual headset, choose the matching supported surround mode, and test with the headset’s spatial feature enabled. Compare it with the stereo baseline and retain the mode that gives stable front, side, and rear placement rather than the one that merely sounds widest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS5 headphone setup

Correct the in-game output first. Then test Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) with a repeatable movement sequence. Keep the option that improves directional consistency without forcing an uncomfortable listening level.

TV-speaker setup

Start with stereo unless the entire television and connected audio system explicitly support multichannel output. Keep virtual surround off for the first test, then compare it separately if the TV provides the option. Room reflections and speaker placement can limit precision even when the game is configured correctly.

Final checklist before playing

  • The selected output is the device connected to your ears or room speakers.
  • The game’s channel mode matches the physical device.
  • Only intentional spatial-processing layers are active.
  • PS5 3D Audio has been tested separately when applicable.
  • Music and other masking categories are low enough for footsteps to stand out.
  • Overall volume is comfortable during explosions and alarms.
  • You have considered difficulty and game-version differences before judging enemy hearing.
