For 1440p, start with DLSS Quality; for 4K, start with Quality and move to Balanced when frame rate needs more headroom. Use Performance at 1440p only when the first two modes are insufficient, and reserve Ultra Performance for exceptionally demanding 4K ray tracing or path tracing. Enable Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation only after establishing a stable rendered base frame, and enable NVIDIA Reflex whenever the game offers it with frame generation.

DLSS 5 is a local generative rendering stage for GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards. The best preset still depends on the game’s engine, ray-tracing workload, target refresh rate and your tolerance for fine-detail artifacts, so treat the recommendations below as starting points and validate them in a motion-heavy scene.

What DLSS 5 does and which GPUs can run it

NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a real-time generative rendering stage. Its one-step pixel-space diffusion model is conditioned on the current rendered frame, engine motion vectors, carried temporal state and artistic-direction values. The process is causal and deterministic, and it is trained for frame-to-frame stability rather than producing unrelated images. NVIDIA says it can render in real time at up to 4K.

The stage runs locally inside an existing game pipeline, not as a cloud service. NVIDIA’s September 1, 2026 DLSS 5 project description specifies GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. That requirement applies to DLSS 5 itself; an RTX 20-, 30- or 40-series card should not be described as having DLSS 5 support merely because a game offers an older DLSS feature.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

GPU model, VRAM, driver, game integration and the selected ray-tracing effects still determine practical performance. Two RTX 50 Series cards will not deliver identical frame rates, and a title may expose only some DLSS features until its developer adds the relevant integration.

What the DLSS modes mean

DLSS modes trade the number of conventionally rendered pixels for reconstruction work. A mode that renders fewer source pixels can leave more GPU time for ray tracing and can raise the rendered base frame rate, but it gives the reconstruction stage less information. The visible result depends on the game, motion, foliage, particles, transparencies and HUD design.

Mode Image and performance behavior Best use Watch for
Quality Highest internal-resolution option in the usual DLSS group; prioritizes fine detail and stability while still reducing the rendering load. Default starting point at 1440p and 4K when the GPU has headroom. Can still be insufficient for heavy path tracing or a high-refresh target.
Balanced Reduces the rendered workload further than Quality, giving more frame-rate headroom with a greater reconstruction burden. When Quality misses the desired base frame rate, especially at 4K. Inspect distant text, foliage, thin geometry and moving effects for shimmer or softness.
Performance Uses substantially fewer source pixels than Quality or Balanced, prioritizing GPU throughput. Demanding 1440p games after the first two modes fail, or heavy 4K ray tracing when Balanced is not enough. Fine detail and thin objects are more likely to show reconstruction artifacts.
Ultra Performance Most aggressive reduction in conventionally rendered pixels; historically difficult at lower output resolutions. Contingency setting for very demanding 4K workloads. NVIDIA now identifies the newer Model L as optimized for 4K Ultra Performance. At 1440p, the limited source image can make text, foliage and geometry defects obvious.

NVIDIA’s January 2026 guidance says the newer transformer model’s gains are most visible in Performance and Ultra Performance, where fewer rendered pixels are available. That does not make Ultra Performance a universal best choice: use it only when the extra headroom is worth the image-quality trade-off.

Best DLSS 5 settings for 1440p

Start with Quality

Select DLSS Quality at 2560×1440 when image clarity is the priority. It is the safest first setting for desktop text, distant geometry, foliage and games with frequent camera movement. Let the game run through a representative scene before changing anything; a quiet corridor can look perfect while a busy outdoor scene reveals ghosting or shimmer.

Move to Balanced when the GPU is the limit

Choose DLSS Balanced if Quality cannot sustain the frame rate your display and game require. This is the normal second step for a GPU-limited title. Compare the same camera path or combat encounter at both modes, concentrating on moving foliage, fences, wires, hair, particles and small subtitles. Keep Balanced when the additional performance is visible but the reconstruction remains stable.

Use Performance only as a rescue setting

DLSS Performance can be usable at 1440p, but it should not be the default. Select it when Quality and Balanced both miss the target, particularly in a ray-traced game where the effects consume most of the GPU budget. Check fine text, foliage and thin geometry at native monitor distance and while moving. If these elements flicker, break apart or become persistently soft, return to Balanced and reduce a separate graphics option instead.

When DLAA is the better choice

DLAA keeps the game at native output resolution and applies anti-aliasing rather than reducing the rendered resolution. It therefore needs substantial GPU headroom. Use it at 1440p only when native-resolution performance is already comfortably high and you prefer maximum detail over additional frame-rate capacity.

Ray Reconstruction at 1440p

Enable Ray Reconstruction when a supported ray-traced game exposes it and the ray-traced image benefits from improved denoising. It addresses the quality of ray-traced effects; it is not a replacement for choosing the appropriate DLSS resolution mode. If enabling it lowers the base frame rate too far, compare the scene with it off before deciding.

Best DLSS 5 settings for 4K

Quality is the default starting range

At 3840×2160, begin with DLSS Quality when the GPU can sustain the desired rendered frame rate. The larger output image gives reconstruction more pixels to work with, and Quality generally offers the most reliable fine-detail result among the performance modes.

Balanced for a practical 4K target

Switch to DLSS Balanced when Quality cannot maintain your target. Balanced is the usual compromise for high-refresh 4K, demanding engines or moderate ray tracing. Compare base frame rate and image stability rather than judging the generated counter alone.

Performance for heavy ray tracing

Use DLSS Performance when demanding ray tracing or path tracing makes Balanced insufficient. NVIDIA’s newer model is intended to improve the modes that have fewer source pixels, so Performance can be a reasonable 4K choice in a visually complex title. Validate reflections, distant signage, foliage and particles during movement.

Ultra Performance only when necessary

DLSS Ultra Performance should be a contingency setting for 4K, not the automatic preset. NVIDIA now considers it viable with the newer transformer model and identifies Model L as optimized for 4K Ultra Performance. Choose it when the game’s workload or your display target leaves no practical alternative, then inspect the image at normal viewing distance. If the loss of fine detail is distracting, reduce individual ray-tracing options or accept a lower refresh target before abandoning Balanced.

Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation and latency

Establish a real base frame first

DLSS Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames from conventionally rendered frames. The smoother output is most convincing when the underlying rendered frame rate is already stable. Generated frames do not replace game simulation, input sampling or the responsiveness of the base render. A high generated-FPS counter cannot fix a stuttering or very low rendered frame rate.

Choose a multiplier for the display

NVIDIA documents Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware at up to five generated frames per rendered frame. Its support guidance gives fixed examples: select 3X when targeting up to 180 FPS and 4X for 240 FPS or more. The exact usable setting depends on the game’s base rate and your monitor’s refresh behavior.

DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation can vary the multiplier to match a display refresh target. Supported RTX 50 Series systems can also expose 6X, which generates five additional frames per traditionally rendered frame. NVIDIA reports up to 35% higher 4K frame rates in path-traced titles when moving from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation; that is a published figure for the cited titles and configuration, not a universal result for every game.

Turn on Reflex with frame generation

Enable NVIDIA Reflex whenever the game exposes it alongside frame generation. Reflex is intended to reduce the latency associated with the rendering queue, helping the generated presentation feel more responsive. Test aiming, camera turns and rapid input in the actual game rather than relying solely on a frame counter.

For a variable-refresh display, use the game, driver and monitor’s normal synchronization strategy and consider an output cap that keeps the frame rate inside the display’s refresh range. Avoid selecting a multiplier that routinely pushes output beyond the panel’s refresh limit if that causes uneven pacing or unnecessary latency.

Model presets in the NVIDIA App

The current NVIDIA App guidance describes a Recommended model-preset setting. It maps Model M to DLSS Performance, Model L to DLSS Ultra Performance and Model K to the remaining modes. Models M and L can run on other modes, but NVIDIA says their strongest quality and performance benefits are in Performance and Ultra Performance.

Model NVIDIA App Recommended mapping Where it is most useful Compatibility note
Model K Remaining DLSS modes Quality, Balanced and other modes where conservative overhead is preferred. Often the safer choice on older RTX generations.
Model M DLSS Performance Performance mode, where the newer model has more opportunity to improve reconstruction from fewer pixels. Can be selected on other modes, but the benefit may be smaller.
Model L DLSS Ultra Performance 4K Ultra Performance, the mode NVIDIA specifically identifies for this model. Can be selected elsewhere; verify the game’s visual result.

GeForce RTX 20- and 30-series cards lack native FP8 support, so NVIDIA warns that Models M and L impose a heavier performance impact on those GPUs. Those users may prefer Model K. DLSS 5 itself remains documented for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, so do not treat an App model override as proof that an older card supports the complete DLSS 5 pipeline.

How to apply an override

  1. Open the current NVIDIA App and select the game profile.
  2. Find the DLSS model or model-preset control. NVIDIA’s older support wording called this DLSS Override – Model Presets; current labels may differ.
  3. Choose the current recommended or latest model option, or select a specific model when you have a reason to override it.
  4. Apply the change after exiting the game if the App requests that sequence.
  5. Launch the game and verify the active model in the NVIDIA overlay or the game’s diagnostic information before comparing image quality.

Because App labels can change, use the label shown by your installed version rather than copying an older menu path verbatim.

A repeatable tuning procedure

  1. Confirm eligibility. Check that the system uses a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU for DLSS 5, current drivers and a game build that exposes the feature.
  2. Set the output resolution. Choose 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 in the game and select the monitor’s intended refresh mode.
  3. Start with the conservative mode. Use Quality at either resolution. Leave frame generation off for this first pass so you can measure the conventionally rendered frame rate.
  4. Choose a test scene. Use an outdoor area, combat encounter or camera route containing foliage, thin geometry, reflections, particles and text. Repeat the same route after each change.
  5. Measure the base frame rate and pacing. Record the rendered result, not only the generated-FPS figure. Note stutter, input delay and spikes.
  6. Step down one mode at a time. Move from Quality to Balanced, then Performance, and finally Ultra Performance only where the resolution and workload justify it. Stop at the first mode that meets the target without unacceptable artifacts.
  7. Configure ray tracing separately. Add Ray Reconstruction in a supported ray-traced title and retest; do not assume it has the same cost or benefit in every engine.
  8. Add Frame Generation. Enable Reflex at the same time, select a multiplier appropriate to the display refresh target and retest motion and controls.
  9. Apply an output cap if useful. Keep generated output aligned with the monitor’s synchronization range and watch for uneven pacing.
  10. Lock the setting only after a long session. Check a second demanding area or level, since a single scene cannot expose every ghosting, shimmer or UI problem.

Foliage, wires or text shimmer

Use a higher DLSS mode, disable an unnecessarily aggressive model override, or reduce a separate effect that creates unstable detail. Compare a stationary view and a slow camera pan; persistent shimmer in both points to reconstruction or game integration rather than ordinary motion blur.

Frame-generation output feels delayed

Check that Reflex is enabled, then examine the rendered base frame rate and frame pacing. Lower the Multi Frame Generation multiplier or use a less demanding graphics preset if the base render is unstable. A higher displayed FPS number does not guarantee lower input latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultra Performance gains little

Check whether the workload is CPU-limited, whether the selected model is adding too much overhead, and whether another setting is limiting the frame rate. Ultra Performance mainly helps when the GPU’s conventionally rendered pixel workload is the bottleneck.

The game has no DLSS 5 option

DLSS support is title-specific. Confirm the game version, driver and GPU, then check the developer’s in-game documentation. An RTX 50 Series card does not make every older or unsupported game expose DLSS 5 automatically.

The NVIDIA App override seems unchanged

Exit the game before applying the override if requested, relaunch it, and verify the active model in the overlay. If the game’s integration does not expose the relevant model, the App setting may have no visible effect.

Hardware and display expectations

Requirement or goal Practical implication
DLSS 5 GPU GeForce RTX 50 Series is the documented hardware family for DLSS 5.
1440p image quality Quality is the safest start; Balanced is the normal performance compromise; Performance is situational.
4K image quality Quality or Balanced covers the normal starting range; Performance targets heavier ray tracing; Ultra Performance is an emergency option.
High-refresh monitor Choose the Frame Generation multiplier around the panel’s refresh target and test pacing with Reflex enabled.
Ray-traced or path-traced game Ray Reconstruction can improve denoising in supported titles, while the DLSS mode determines the rendered-pixel trade-off.
Native-resolution priority DLAA preserves native output resolution but requires enough GPU headroom to run the game without upscaling.

What the official figures do—and do not—tell you

NVIDIA’s published material provides a ceiling of up to 4K real-time output for DLSS 5, up to five generated frames per rendered frame for Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50 Series hardware, and the cited up-to-35% 4K path-tracing increase when moving from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA also says the second-generation transformer uses five times the compute of the original transformer model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures describe capabilities or specific published comparisons, not a universal benchmark table. NVIDIA’s official pages do not provide one independent 1440p-and-4K table covering every game, GPU and preset. Exact image quality and frame rate therefore remain dependent on the title’s integration, driver, scene and hardware. Test your own motion-heavy scene before making a preset permanent.

Recommended presets at a glance

Scenario DLSS mode Frame Generation Additional guidance
1440p, clarity-first Quality Off initially; add only after base performance is stable. Use DLAA instead if native performance is already ample.
1440p, GPU-limited Balanced Optional, with Reflex. Move to Performance only after checking fine detail.
1440p, very demanding ray tracing Performance if Balanced fails Use a display-appropriate multiplier with Reflex. Inspect foliage, thin geometry and text in motion.
4K, balanced quality Quality Optional after measuring the base frame. Best first choice when the GPU has headroom.
4K, high-refresh target Balanced Choose 3X or 4X around the documented refresh examples. Keep output aligned with the monitor’s synchronization strategy.
4K, heavy ray tracing or path tracing Performance Reflex recommended with frame generation. Use Ultra Performance only if Performance and graphics reductions are insufficient.
4K, extreme workload Ultra Performance Consider Dynamic Multi Frame Generation or 6X where supported. Model L is NVIDIA’s recommended optimization target for this mode; verify image quality carefully.

The practical rule is simple: select the highest DLSS mode that meets your rendered-frame target without visible reconstruction defects, then add frame generation as a smoothness feature rather than using it to disguise an unstable base render.
