SimpliSafe is the strongest all-around DIY pick in Security.org’s 2026 comparison for straightforward installation and flexible monitoring. ADT Blu is a camera-focused alternative, Cove emphasizes lower equipment cost, abode is the clearest smart-home choice, and Ring Alarm suits Alexa users who value portability. The right choice depends on whether you need professional response, camera storage, renter-friendly mounting, or integrations—not just the starter-kit price.

How the five systems compare
Security.org’s 2026 DIY guide says it tested more than 60 systems, conducted 150 simulated break-ins, and reviewed 40 systems before recommending five. Those are the publisher’s methodology figures, not independent proof that any system prevents crime. Its ranking is useful as one source-specific assessment, not a universal verdict.

These starter prices and monitoring figures are the snapshots in Security.org’s 2026 renter comparison, not guaranteed current prices. Monitoring tiers are not necessarily equivalent, so compare what each includes—such as staffed response, cellular backup, and camera services—rather than treating the monthly figures as like-for-like quotes.

Which system fits your home?
SimpliSafe: best broad recommendation
SimpliSafe is the most balanced starting point if you want a system designed for DIY setup and the option to choose self-monitoring or professional monitoring. Its sensors use adhesive, which can avoid drilling in many installations. Check the plan details if video recording or specific monitoring features matter: access to the app does not mean all camera storage or response features are included without a subscription.
ADT Blu: consider it for the camera line
ADT Blu is a reasonable alternative when its DIY setup and camera offerings appeal to you. Compare the exact self-monitoring and professional-monitoring tiers. In the cited renter comparison, camera-inclusive professional monitoring costs more than the no-camera starting tier, so a low entry price may not represent the configuration you intend to use.
Rank #2

- Protection for entry points - Entry Sensors protect windows, doors, and cabinets and alert you when someone tries to enter. Customizable and can send Secret Alerts so you are quietly alerted if someone accesses private areas, without sounding an alarm.
- Blanket a whole room - Motion sensors detect motion within 35 feet, have a 90 degree field of view and get along great with pets under 60lbs. Perfect for full room coverage when placed in a corner.
Cove: equipment-cost option
Cove’s cited starter kit is the lowest of the five snapshots, and the system is presented as an affordability-oriented choice with customizable equipment. That advantage is about the initial hardware figure, not necessarily total cost: the comparison requires professional monitoring, and camera support is tied to a higher plan.

abode is the clearest fit for a reader who wants a security hub to participate in a wider smart home. Security.org describes support for Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Z-Wave, and Zigbee on applicable hubs or configurations. Check the exact hub and plan before assuming a particular integration is available; some abode automations do not require a subscription, but features vary. Ring Alarm: portable and Alexa-oriented
Ring Alarm is identified in the renter comparison as portable and a natural option for Alexa users. Its sensors can provide alarm functions without a subscription, but that does not make camera recording, cloud storage, or professional response free. Treat the alarm system and any Ring cameras as related but distinct parts of the decision.
What renters should check before installing
Most systems in this comparison use wireless components and DIY installation. Peel-and-stick door and window sensors, tabletop cameras, and plug-in base stations can reduce the need to drill or hardwire. Lower-impact mounting is not a guarantee that an installation complies with a lease or will leave no marks.
Rank #4
- A great fit for 1-2 bedroom homes, this kit includes one base station, one keypad, four contact sensors, one motion detector, and one range extender.
- Includes an intuitive Keypad that can arm and disarm your Alarm and Contact Sensors that detect when doors or windows open.
- Choose the Ring Alarm Kit that fits your needs and detect even more with additional Alarm Sensors and accessories (sold separately) at any time.
- Receive mobile notifications when your system is triggered and monitor all your Ring devices all through the Ring app.
- More peace of mind. Subscribe to a compatible Ring Protect Plan (sold separately) to Arm your Alarm from anywhere, keep your system online if the Wi-Fi goes down, and more. Plus, get 24/7 Professional Monitoring for emergency police, fire and medical response, and more.
- Review the lease and property rules. Check restrictions on adhesives, cameras facing shared areas, and changes to doors or windows. Ask the landlord or property manager when the rules are unclear.
- Follow the installation instructions. Adhesive strength and removal methods vary by surface and product. Test cautiously and avoid attaching equipment to surfaces the instructions exclude.
- Plan for the move. Confirm how sensors detach, whether adhesive pads need replacing, and whether the system can be reset and reinstalled at a new address.
- Check financing separately from monitoring. A month-to-month monitoring option does not make financed hardware month-to-month. The renter comparison gives ADT Blu financing with a 36-month contract as an example; review the specific agreement before signing.
For homeowners, wireless and adhesive equipment can also simplify installation. A larger property, however, usually needs more sensors and more deliberate placement; Security.org notes that setup may take longer in larger homes and that professional installation may be worthwhile even when DIY equipment is offered.

- Hardware: Start with the published package, then account for additional entry sensors, motion sensors, cameras, or a video doorbell needed for your layout.
- Alarm monitoring: Decide whether you will respond to alerts yourself or pay for a staffed service. The comparison’s starting monthly rates are plan-specific and not directly interchangeable.
- Video: Check whether live viewing, event notifications, and recorded clips are included, and whether storage is local or cloud-based.
- Commitments: Verify billing frequency, cancellation terms, equipment financing, and whether ending monitoring affects any other service.
Security.org’s no-monthly-fee comparison says the SimpliSafe, abode, and Ring systems it compared did not include free cloud or local video storage. This is a time-sensitive plan comparison, not a promise about every current package; verify storage terms with the provider before relying on footage being saved.
Self-monitoring, professional response, and cameras are different
With self-monitoring, alerts go to you and you are responsible for receiving and acting on them. Professional monitoring is a recurring service whose response process and backup features depend on the plan. Neither model should be confused with camera recording: a camera may let you view a feed without saving clips, while an alarm may detect an opening without providing video evidence.
Before choosing, decide who should receive an alarm, what happens if your phone is unavailable or the internet goes down, and whether you need cellular backup or saved video. The no-fee comparison is useful for understanding the distinction, but current capabilities and plan conditions should be confirmed for the exact system and tier.

Security Advisor and retired SWAT commander Gene Petrino told Security.org: “I’ve investigated numerous incidents where a suspicious person was seen in the backyards of homes, checking windows and doors, and fled as soon as they realized that there were security cameras capturing their every move. In one specific situation, the suspect tried to disable the camera, only realizing that another camera was capturing his activities.” This is an attributed anecdote, not a measured estimate of how often cameras deter crime.
How to choose for your situation
- Choose your response model. If you want a monitoring center involved, compare professional plans and their exact response and backup features. If you want to avoid a recurring monitoring bill, be prepared to manage alerts yourself.
- Map the property. List entry doors and accessible windows, then decide where sensors and cameras can be placed without violating lease rules or creating privacy concerns.
- Set your video requirement. Decide whether live viewing is enough or whether you need saved clips, cloud storage, or specific detections; price the needed plan rather than assuming it comes with the kit.
- Check compatibility and portability. Verify your smart-home platform and hub configuration, and, if renting, make sure equipment can be removed and moved under the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Compare total first-year cost and terms. Add the kit, necessary add-ons, monitoring, storage, and any financing commitment before settling on a winner.
