The Best cURL and Wget Alternatives in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best cURL or Wget alternative depends on what you are trying to do. For readable REST and JSON API calls, start with HTTPie. For segmented, multi-source downloads across several protocols, choose aria2. For Windows-native scripts, use PowerShell’s Invoke-WebRequest. Keep Wget or Wget2 for unattended or recursive retrieval, and keep cURL when portability, broad protocol support, and precise control matter most.

There is no evidence-backed “fastest” winner: the available documentation describes capabilities, not a common benchmark. This guide compares the tools by job, shows practical commands, and explains an important Windows trap: in Windows PowerShell 5.1, curl and wget are aliases for Invoke-WebRequest, not necessarily the programs their names suggest.

Choose by job, not by a universal ranking

cURL and Wget overlap, but they are not interchangeable in every workflow. cURL is a flexible transfer tool with broad protocol support and precise options. Wget and Wget2 are natural choices for unattended retrieval; Wget’s recursive retrieval is especially relevant when you need to fetch a site or linked material rather than make one API request. Alternatives make sense when they better match your interface, transfer pattern, or scripting environment.

Tool Best fit Why choose it Important qualification
HTTPie Interactive REST and JSON API requests Its CLI is designed as a command-line HTTP client; readable request syntax is useful when inspecting APIs. Its download mode saves response bodies and shows progress. Choose it for API ergonomics, not as a claim of faster general-purpose downloads.
aria2 Segmented, multi-source, or protocol-diverse downloads The official manual documents HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink, and says it can use multiple sources to use available bandwidth. Its multi-source capabilities do not establish that it is universally faster; results depend on the source and connection.
PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest Windows scripts that benefit from PowerShell and its objects It is built into PowerShell and Microsoft documents HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and FILE requests. Syntax and behavior differ between Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7+; check which shell is running.
Wget or Wget2 Unattended or recursive retrieval They remain relevant download tools. The curl project’s comparison table places them alongside cURL and other utilities across transfer features. Check the installed version and its supported options on your platform.
cURL Portable scripts and low-level transfer control It offers broad protocol support and detailed flags across many environments. Its compact, option-rich interface may be less approachable for exploratory API work.

The curl project’s comparison table also considers tools such as fetch, lftp, HTTrack, and xh across protocol and transfer features. That breadth is useful when evaluating a narrower task, but the table is not a universal performance test.

For APIs: HTTPie is the friendliest first alternative

HTTPie is a good first choice when you are exploring an HTTP API, sending JSON, or want a request to be easy to read in a terminal. HTTPie describes its CLI as a command-line HTTP client. Its Desktop application is a cross-platform API testing client and can import cURL commands, which helps if you already have a request in cURL form and want to inspect or edit it in a graphical interface.

Make a readable JSON request

For example, an HTTPie request to a JSON API can look like this:

http POST https://api.example.com/items name=sample active:=true

Here, name=sample is sent as a string field and active:=true as a JSON boolean. Replace the example host and fields with the API’s actual endpoint and schema. For a GET request with a query parameter, HTTPie’s syntax is similarly concise:

http GET https://api.example.com/items status==open

Use the API’s documentation for its authentication mechanism, required headers, and accepted fields; no client can infer those requirements from the URL alone.

Save a response body

HTTPie documents --download (or -d) mode for saving a response body with a progress bar:

This is convenient for a single download you want to monitor. If you are retrieving many sources, resuming interrupted transfers, or need a particular protocol, compare HTTPie with aria2, Wget, or cURL rather than assuming the API-focused client is the best fit.

For large or multi-source transfers: use aria2 when its features fit

aria2 is the clearest alternative when the job calls for multiple sources, segmented downloads, or protocols beyond HTTP. Its official manual lists HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink support. It says aria2 can fetch a file from multiple sources or protocols and tries to use available bandwidth.

Start a download

aria2c https://example.com/large-file.zip

Request multiple connections

For an HTTP or HTTPS server that permits parallel range requests, a common aria2 pattern is to request several connections and segments:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
aria2c -x 8 -s 8 https://example.com/large-file.zip

-x sets the maximum connections to one server and -s sets the number of segments. These are requested limits, not a promise that the server will supply that many useful streams. Server restrictions, source quality, network capacity, and the actual file all affect results. Do not treat these options as a universal speed setting or a substitute for a controlled benchmark.

Choose aria2 when its documented transfer modes solve a real requirement. For ordinary API calls, HTTPie may be simpler; for a script that needs precise HTTP behavior and broad portability, cURL may still be a better fit.

On Windows: distinguish PowerShell from the cURL executable

Microsoft documents Invoke-WebRequest for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and FILE requests. In Windows PowerShell 5.1, the names curl and wget are aliases for that cmdlet. If you intend to call the actual cURL binary, write curl.exe explicitly. PowerShell 7+ is a separate edition; do not assume every detail or default from 5.1 applies to it.

Download a file with PowerShell

Invoke-WebRequest -Uri 'https://example.com/archive.zip' -OutFile 'archive.zip'

-OutFile writes the response to a file instead of leaving the response content in the command output. That makes it a straightforward choice for a Windows script whose next step is to work with the saved file.

Send a request with the actual cURL binary

curl.exe -L 'https://example.com/archive.zip' -o 'archive.zip'

Using curl.exe removes ambiguity when the PowerShell alias would otherwise take precedence. The -L option tells cURL to follow redirects; omit it if your workflow should handle redirects differently.

Account for the Windows PowerShell 5.1 parsing warning

Microsoft documents a warning introduced after December 9, 2025: in Windows PowerShell 5.1, parsing a web page can involve script execution unless you use -UseBasicParsing. For a 5.1 script that does not need that page-parsing behavior, use:

Invoke-WebRequest -Uri 'https://example.com/' -UseBasicParsing

This caveat is specifically about Windows PowerShell 5.1 and its page parsing. Check Microsoft’s Invoke-WebRequest documentation for the edition you run rather than carrying the 5.1 advice over to PowerShell 7+ without checking.

When Wget or Wget2 remains the right tool

Replacing Wget is not automatically an improvement. If your workflow depends on unattended retrieval or recursive fetching, Wget and Wget2 belong on the shortlist. The curl project’s comparison table includes both alongside cURL, aria2, HTTPie, and other open-source tools, including comparisons of resume, protocol, and transfer features.

Before switching, identify the Wget behavior your script actually uses: for example, whether it retrieves a single URL or recursively follows links, and whether it needs to resume work. Then verify that the proposed replacement supports that behavior in the installed version. A command that downloads one file is not proof that it preserves a recursive site-retrieval workflow.

How to compare alternatives without choosing on hype

Use the requirements of your own task as the test. A comparison should account for the following, not just command length or a “fastest” label:

  • Protocols: does the tool support the protocols your sources require? aria2’s manual explicitly lists HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink.
  • Retrieval pattern: do you need one object, recursive retrieval, multiple sources, or an API request?
  • Resume and bandwidth controls: check the relevant tool’s documentation and the server’s behavior before relying on them.
  • API ergonomics and output: HTTPie is oriented toward readable HTTP requests; consider whether your script needs a saved file, displayed response, or structured processing.
  • Shell and portability: consider whether the script must run in PowerShell, a Unix-like shell, or several environments. On Windows PowerShell 5.1, qualify curl.exe if you mean the cURL executable.
  • GUI or team testing: HTTPie Desktop may suit API testing in a graphical client and supports importing cURL commands.
  • Measured performance: benchmark your real sources and network if speed is decisive. Feature documentation alone cannot identify the fastest tool.

Daniel Stenberg’s 2025 cURL user survey reported Wget at roughly 73%, aria2c at 12.8%, and HTTPie at 8.1% among responses about favorite download utilities. These are survey responses, not market-share estimates or proof of transfer speed. The 2024 survey analysis reported Wget at 75.4%, aria2c at 11.9%, and HTTPie at 9.6%; that is a separate year’s survey context, not a directly comparable performance test.

Troubleshooting common choice and command problems

Typing curl in Windows PowerShell runs the wrong program

In Windows PowerShell 5.1, curl is an alias for Invoke-WebRequest. If you need cURL’s command-line options, run curl.exe. If you intended to use PowerShell, use the cmdlet and its parameter names instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PowerShell command behaves differently on another machine

Check whether the script runs in Windows PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7+. The alias and the documented post-December 9, 2025 parsing warning specifically concern Windows PowerShell 5.1. Use the edition’s Microsoft documentation when reviewing behavior.

An aria2 transfer does not use all requested connections

-x and -s request connection and segment limits; they do not force a server to accept parallel range requests or guarantee extra throughput. Check the source’s support and compare results against a single-connection download on the same file and connection.

A download command prints content instead of saving it

Use a file-output option appropriate to the client: HTTPie documents --download or -d; PowerShell uses -OutFile; cURL uses -o. Verify the output path is writable and that you are running the intended command rather than a shell alias.

A tool does not handle the workflow you used Wget for

Check whether the original task was recursive retrieval rather than a single download. A replacement selected for API readability or parallel transfers may not preserve a recursive workflow; verify the needed behavior in the replacement’s documentation before migrating scripts.

For website screenshots, use a purpose-built screenshot API

cURL, Wget, HTTPie, and aria2 transfer data; they do not by themselves render a web page in a browser and capture it as an image or PDF. If the actual task is taking website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, removes supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots rather than bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, or cache hits.

Or skip the browser setup

Use this one-call cURL example to save a WebP capture. The API also supports PNG, JPEG, or PDF output; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Frequently Asked Questions

Are the 2025 cURL survey percentages market share?

No. They describe respondents’ favorite download utilities in Daniel Stenberg’s 2025 cURL user survey, not market share.

Is aria2 proven to be faster than cURL or Wget?

No common benchmark is established here. aria2 documents multi-source transfers and bandwidth utilization, but that capability alone does not prove it is faster for a particular download.
