1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo single portable Bluetooth speaker wins everywhere, and the major reviewers disagree on the top spot. As of early October 2026, SoundGuys names the JBL Charge 6 its overall pick, while WIRED calls the JBL Flip 7 its top pick for most use cases. The difference is mostly size: Charge 6 is the larger, louder-leaning choice, and Flip 7 is the easier one to carry. This guide pulls together what those outlets and others say, so you can choose by how you listen.
One note on method: this is a roundup of published expert reviews, attributed to each outlet, not a set of our own lab tests. It covers portable, battery-powered speakers only. TechRadar likewise excludes stationary, Wi-Fi-focused wireless speakers from its portable picks.

Quick picks by need
| Your need | Model | Why reviewers point to it |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall (SoundGuys) | JBL Charge 6 | SoundGuys’ overall pick; it describes IP68 protection, an EQ in the app, USB-C, phone charging and Auracast. What Hi-Fi? also lists it in its current comparison. |
| Best for most uses (WIRED) | JBL Flip 7 | WIRED’s top pick; lists IP68, up to 14 hours of battery (16 in boost mode), Auracast, stereo pairing and USB-C. |
| Pocket or backpack carry | JBL Go 5 | What Hi-Fi? lists 8 hours (10 with Playtime Boost), IP68 and a weight of 230 g. TechRadar included it among its 2026 tested picks and calls it tiny. |
| Budget compact | Tribit Stormbox Micro 3 | TechRadar’s July 2026 roundup reports a 24-hour claimed battery life and IP68, with comments on its compact sound. |
| Outdoor-oriented alternative | Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) | SoundGuys’ Bose pick; it notes IP67 and a strap attachment. Our evidence on this model is thinner than for the JBL models. |
Why the experts disagree on the winner
SoundGuys (March 2026 guide) puts the Charge 6 first. WIRED (updated September 2026) prefers the Flip 7 for most use cases. Neither is wrong; they are weighing size, portability and sound differently. RTINGS explains the underlying trade-off: larger speakers are heavier but tend to get louder and produce deeper bass, while smaller ones fit more easily in a backpack or pocket.
A practical rule: if the speaker will mostly sit on a patio, a picnic blanket or a shelf, lean toward the larger Charge 6 class. If it will travel daily in a bag, the Flip 7 class or a smaller Go 5-style speaker is the sensible starting point.

Best Bluetooth speaker for most people
JBL Charge 6: the larger all-rounder
SoundGuys picks it overall and highlights IP68 dust and water protection, USB-C, app EQ, Auracast and the ability to charge a phone. If you want one speaker for the backyard, the beach and a hotel room, this is the model to shortlist first.
JBL Flip 7: the easier everyday carry
WIRED recommends it for most use cases. Its listed features include IP68, Auracast, stereo pairing with a second speaker and USB-C charging. Its battery is rated at up to 14 hours, or 16 in boost mode, according to WIRED’s specification listing.

Best for outdoors and travel
WIRED advises checking IP ratings and battery life for outdoor use, and SoundGuys says an official IP rating is useful near water. The IP68 listed for Charge 6, Flip 7, Go 5 and Stormbox Micro 3 is a rating for dust and water protection. It is not a promise that the speaker survives drops, heat or salt exposure, so check each manufacturer’s own rating details. The Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is rated IP67 by SoundGuys and includes a strap attachment, which is handy for hanging it from a bag or tent.

The 230 g Go 5 (What Hi-Fi? listing) is the most packable option here, with the trade-off of a shorter battery rating.

- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
Best sound quality
Sound quality tracks size more than any other factor. The reviewers we consulted favor larger speakers for volume and bass, and some models offer an app EQ so you can adjust tone. The smaller options, including the Go 5 and the Tribit Stormbox Micro 3, are praised for how much they deliver for their size, but they are not substitutes for a larger speaker when you need to fill a big space.
Battery life: read the numbers carefully
Manufacturer ratings, reviewer tests and boost modes are not interchangeable. The Charge 6 shows why:
Rank #4

- What Hi-Fi? (2026 comparison) lists 20 hours, or 28 with Playtime Boost.
- SoundGuys (March 2026) says battery life rises to 24 hours, up from 20 on the predecessor.
The material we reviewed does not show that these two figures came from the same test conditions, so do not average them or treat either as a guaranteed runtime. Volume, bass-heavy music, temperature and features such as phone charging all change real-world endurance. The other quoted figures are similarly source-specific: 14 hours (16 in boost mode) for the Flip 7 from WIRED, 8 hours (10 with Playtime Boost) for the Go 5 from What Hi-Fi?, and a 24-hour claim for the Stormbox Micro 3 as reported by TechRadar.
Features worth paying for
- App EQ: useful if the default tuning is too bassy or thin for your music.
- USB-C charging: convenient for sharing cables with phones and laptops.
- Stereo or multi-speaker linking: the Flip 7 supports stereo pairing; Auracast on the Charge 6 and Flip 7 is for broadcasting to compatible speakers. Check compatibility before buying a second speaker.
- Phone charging: SoundGuys mentions it on the Charge 6. It is a bigger-speaker feature, and it drains the speaker’s own battery.
Confirm any feature on the exact model and region you are buying, because reviewers and retailers sometimes cover revised versions.
How to choose
- Decide where it will live. Mostly stationary and outdoors points to the larger Charge 6; mostly in a bag points to the Flip 7 or Go 5.
- Check water and dust protection. For beach, pool or camping use, look for an official IP rating.
- Set a realistic battery need. Compare rated hours, and assume real use will differ.
- Pick the features you will actually use. App EQ, USB-C and pairing matter only if they fit your setup.
- Check live prices in your region. Prices quoted at launch in reviews, such as for the Stormbox Micro 3 in TechRadar’s July 2026 roundup, are not current offers.

- RTINGS: says its portable recommendations start from tested products and that it has tested over 200 speakers.
- TechRadar (July 2026): says its picks were based on in-depth testing, price and fit for people’s lives.
